Nice arm

Joe is just a good ol boy. I like all of his content tbh
Rickson had more athleticism and explosiveness than Royce. Rickson would’ve been “top gaming” a lot more, and he had some legit ground and pound. Royces “bottom game” probably got so good from a lifetime of rickson manhandling him.
By the looks of them, I would bet all their bottom games are on point... )))

Never heard Big John talk before - very impressive speaker.
Look up “Weighing In”, does a podcast
I concur.
Big John is extremely knowledgeable and articulate. You're basically looking at the man who created the rules for MMA.
Check out the whole podcast it's a good one
Check it out “weighing in “ probably one of the best podcast / show when it comes MMA .
McCarthy is really a no-nonsense kind of guy. True student of fighting and MMA. Doesn't let all that dogmatic fanfare bullsh*t of early 90s cloud his judgement.
Well he was a cop for around 20 years
Rickson was too much of a gangster for his brothers lol
And rorion the businessman
sometimes a “free spirit” is hard to oversee, advice, & direct/tame. Much less control.
Rickson would have legend status in US had he fought in the UFC because he was lot stronger and just a better all round fighter than Royce. Rickson's fights against Ken, Tank, Severn, and even Don Frye would have been epic. Ahh what could have been.
God damn, prime Don Frye vs Rickson would have been amazing to watch
Rickson ducked the UFC and Pride the competition in his movie choke was pathetic
I think it was also about saving face. I mean, Rickson was the champion of the family, the top guy, so had he been defeated that might have put the Gracies in a bad light. I know they are legends, innovators and all around legit badasses, but they cared too much for their reput too.
@James Walker So 2 of them which Royce beat with a BJJ can beat Rickson in the early days? When it's well known that Rickson was the best in his family at the time? And Royce said Rickson was better than him? Ok...
Come on Rickson made it simple, rabbit punches then take down, game over, it ruined the magic of fancy martial arts overnight. No one wanted to be a ninja after that.
If Rickson fought in UFC 1, there would be no Gracie vs Shamrock trilogy
Wonder how he would do against someone like Matt Hughes that would have been a great fight
If Karelin had competed there would be No BJJ as we know it today
There shouldn't have been anyway.
Prob not, but I have to agree he would have most likely ragdolled Royce lol.
Yeah Bee a young(ish) Karelian, yes. He would have changed the sport faster than Couture and the early RAW guys. As Karelian aged he wasn’t quite the same guy.
Rickson still looked like a bad ass with the gi on. It was still visually more impressive with Royce winning. It sold me.
Yea Royce's look influenced how I felt about it a lot too. The fact that he was basically a normal looking skinny guy who could dominate way bigger guys had a huge huge impact on me. Honestly, watching him do that was a defining moment in my life, and probably for many others. Idk if Rickson would have had the same effect, because he wasn't lanky, boney, so average looking.
Just look at their faces not even anything else an Rickson clearly has the eyes of a warrior very strong facial structure too
He had to wear a gi, he had a silly body, nothing like movie star pecs or abs.
The best Gracie was supposed to be Rolles, but he died in a hang gliding accident in 1982 at 30. He would have been over 40 by the time of UFC 1, and Whorion never liked the guy anyway because he used to tap him regularly...lol
@@pulsarlights2825 I should had even after the first UF1 it took at least ten more years until MMA gyms started to open in big cities. Things take time, also evey movie has MMA in now. They use to just have one or two fancy kicks back in the day.
This is such a mind opener. I have always believed that Rumor about why Rickson never fought in the UFC to be true. Thanks John McCarthy!

Rorion also sued to stop his family members from using the “Gracie” name.
True. He sued his cousin Carley Gracie.
Yup sued his cousins, or disconnected/took funding away from their schools. Machado is an example

@@ALLSTARDECOURO2 from the mouth of jean Jacque
Imagine someone legally stopping you from using your own lastname.
Rorion made Rickson sign a non compete agreement that was written in English, which rickson couldnt read at the time, that he legally couldn’t compete in the United States. Which is why Rickson competed in Japan his entire career. It’s been said before in older family interviews.
I respect Rorion for founding the UFC because if it wasn’t for that I would probably have never known about jiu jitsu. With that said he seemed like a real scummy person with stories I’ve heard from other Gracie’s about what he did to his own family members for money.
Really? Were the Gracie’s Brazilian Jews by any chance? I just want to state I by no means meant the aforementioned as a definitive and accurate statement, it was made in a pseudo comedic form of parody and thus does not in any way accurately reflect my own personal views or opinions. Herein see referendum v.2 etc…. (yeesh)
So basically, he screwed his own brother?! That’s horrible 😞
@@SpiceBoy7UK23 that’s why there’s a lot of controversy in the Gracie family. They’re all against each other over copyright and money problems.
If that's true, it's very deceitful and treacherous.
I heard it was Royce because he was smaller. The first UFC was more a marketing ploy for how effective Gracie jiu jitsu was. Royce goes out and submits everyone and everyone is like wow this Gracie jiu jitsu is awesome
They speak on that at the end of the video. I was told the same thing.
In Art Davies book “Is this legal” he said that Rorion picked Royce to fight UFC 1 because Rickson was not giving the money he earned from teaching private’s to Rorion and putting it towards the Torrance academy. He also mentions something about Rickson using the money to get his wife a massage or something like that. A very similar story that Royce was chosen basically as a punishment towards Rickson. It could have blown up in Rorions face, but it didn’t. I’ve been training BJJ since I saw Royce win in UFC 2. I was impressed with what I saw and decided I wanted to learn that.
Big D Ron. Are you a time traveller from the 90’s because your statement makes no sense. Watch the first three UFC’s and tell us what the superior art was then champ.
@Big D Ron : BJJ saved my brother-in-law's life in an altercation resulting from a traffic stop. Got the whole thing on his dash cam.
Big D Ron just a heads up. BJJ won’t stand a chance in standup because it’s almost entirely a ground based martial art. It’s like saying that Lennox Lewis wouldn’t stand a chance in a ground fight.
@Big D Ron most people don't know BJJ so 9 times out of 10 you'll win. Unless your competing in mma your fine but yea it's always good to not stick to one style
BJJ is very effective and very impressive martial arts/sports but in a street fight a size 12 steel toe boots could easily turn black belt into a white belt.
The question you should really be asking is , why didn't they bring over Sakuraba to defeat the family
Because Royce first retirement was in 1995 a year before Sakuraba made his pro debut.
Good explanation. I always assumed it was because Rickson feared Art Jimmerson. ;-)
That too
Ufc 1 2 and 3 were the best. Sumo wrestlers vs karate experts, gracie vs shamrock. Was interesting
Dude, Joe is amazingly good with the impressions!
Check out the Rickson interview with Jocko to get his side, it's a great story
Why is everyone typing Royce and Rickson but they are saying Hoyce and Hickson so clearly. I've never heard Rs sound like Hs in any language
It's just how it's pronounced in Brazilian Portugese (and maybe original Portugese?) when a word starts with an R. It's why Royce sounds like Hoyce, but Gracie doesn't sound like Ghacie.
With physical appearance being the basis with the greatest prejudice in the minds of North Americans for presuming fight dominance between two opponents, Rickson looked more powerful, more athletic and just appeared to be the scrapy type compared to Royce. Whether or not it played a roll or influenced the choice of Royce to represent in the UFC over Rickson, the impact it made toward popularizing BJJ was monumental. I will always consider Royce to have been the one to open the eyes to the effectiveness and size mitigating value of BJJ.
In LA there is a long standing rumor that the Gracies prevented Gokor Civichyan from competing in ufc 1. The gracies apparently put a million dollar bet hoping Gokor could not come up with the money but some armenian mafioso put the money up and called there bluff in turn the gracies prevented Gokor from being a participant. You should interview Gokor or Royce to get to the bottom of this.
I wouldn't doubt it.
Probably would have leg locked them.
they worked very hard to keep Russian wrestlers and chutebox guys out of the UFC
Not sure about that one because when I was on Facebook a couple years ago I was friends with Art Davie and I asked him why Gokor wasn't in the UFC and he said he didn't know every detail but he was in fact offered the chance to be in the UFC and I guess he was busy teaching and had things going on but Art did tell me that Gokor turned down the opportunity. 🤷♂️ imagine that though Gokor vs Royce in the finals of UFC 1!? Would've been awesome to see.
@@complexblackness not easily he wouldn't have. Ken was going for a leglock when Royce caught him with the RNC. I think it would've been a great fight though no matter what the outcome.

Imagine a parallel universe where Rickson competed...

Rickson would have looked smaller in a gi than Royce. He's not a big guy at all. So Rorian's reason for not choosing him doesn't make much sense. It was definitely related to Gracie family politics.
sure, but it's a fact Rickson was more jacked and muscular than Royce
I think it had something to do with reputation too: Rickson was the holy cow so they might have been uncomfortable to expose him to potential defeat, thus they gave the opportunity to Royce.
@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266 You're forgetting that no one knew the Gracies (outside Brazil) so it wouldn't have mattered if Rickson had lost though I doubt that anyone in the world could have beaten him except maybe Marco Ruas
@@siasti Even if nobody knew them outside of Brazil, they did care about their reputation. They backed off a challenge by Benny Urquidez prior to those events already. They have a history of protecting their image fyi.

@Nate Dogg i believe his son had just passed man.
Nate Dogg 😂😂alright bro if u say so
Nate Dogg he didn’t duck Sakaraba. They actually signed to fight, but cancelled because of Rockson. That’s hardly “ducking” Sak. By 2002/03 Rickson was already in his mid-40’s. The real fight that never got made was Rickson VS Bas Rutten or Frank Shamrock.
@@BadgerBJJ The fight happened in 2000 not 2002. Rickson was also undefeated and still competing in his 40's. His last fight was in May 26, 2000 at the age of 42. Sakuraba beat Royce on May 1, 2000. Rickson still took 1 more fight in the same month against Funaki who was 31 and at that point, beat up and past his prime. Funaki went on to lose 3 fights in a row including one to Sakuraba after Rickson. During that same year, Sakuraba went on to defeat other Gracies and Rickson did nothing about it. He didn't have another professional fight from May 2000 onward. Sakuraba beat Royce under Gracie Rules. Rickson tried to have the rules changed prior to the fight against Funaki as well. In the end, headbutts and elbows here banned. They will always have their place in MMA but this is a pattern that can be seen anywhere the Gracies are present.
Joe Rogan’s Brazilian accent is on point
Royce Gracie vs Gokor Chivichyan is my dream fight that never happened
I was hoping for a judo's Gene lebell vs. Gracie back then
@@mattmatthews4274 gene was already getting old at that point but I think he could've done some serious damage to anyone. Gokor is Gene's student also
Rickson versus Bas in their primes was thecfifht evryone really wanted to see. The whole Gracie family/Sakuraba deal was just a continuance of a very old grudge between Japan and South America over Jiu-jitsu.
As much as I love Bas, he would’ve got embarrassed by Rickson back then. Ken Shamrock tapped out Bas twice in the day, if I remember correctly. Imagine what Rickson would’ve done? Bas evolved with the times though after and got real good in the grappling.
I agree. I love Bas as well but I don't think he would have had a chance against Rickson.
@@CW-ke8rk Exactly, and since Royce made Ken tap, imagine the scenario with Rickson? 😳 Ken would've been completely Destroyed by Rickson.
The primed at different times. Rickson's prime was in late 80s, Bas primed in mid 90s. There's almost a decade gap between them.
But let's be honest, if we magically had a late 80s Rickson vs a mid 90s Bas, Bas would smash Rickson easy. Rickson had no striking, coupled with awkward Gracie stance and poor wrestling skills. That's just a recipe for disaster against Bas Rutten. He'd be liver shot to death. LMAO
The takeaway here is that Rorion is the Brazilian version of Billy Mays.
If only there were grapplers (e.g. wrestling) in the early UFC, MMA history would be different -- it was meant to highlight BJJ.

Joe ‘ Two Rumours’ Rogan
I did 2 years of martial arts when the UFC first started and REALLY enjoyed the early UFC tournaments and have rarely watched it since. The weight classes, more rules, etc., made it much less fun to watch.
Yeah but if they didn't add rules it wouldn't have become the huge sport it is today. And we wouldn't get nearly as many entertaining fights. It would just be the heavyweights dominating once they figured out BJJ. Even back then Dan Severn would have mauled Royce if he even had a little training in BJJ. Even without it he dominated the whole fight until he got caught in a triangle choke which he probably didn't even know existed lol
@@MitchJohnson0110 I don't consider it entertaining anymore. Fighters aren't aggressive enough. I watched one entire card last year where the only good fight was the one female match. The male matches always had one guy whose heart wasn't in it or a guy who didn't have comparable skill.
@@SenorJuan2023 You haven't been watching much then because last year alone had some absolute banger , high action, fights that i would much rather watch than 90% of the older fights which were usually two out of shape dudes throwing middle school punches or laying on top of each other. Why do their names flop back and forth? Hickson / Rickson... Royce / Hoyce???
because brazilians pronounce R as a "h sound"... they dont roll the tonge...
It’s not going back and forth, they pronounced the names the same way the whole time, the difference is just In spelling and pronunciation, the spelling is Rickson, the pronunciation is Hickson because of how Brazilian Portuguese is pronounced
Juan Silva FINALLY. A fucking answer to this madness. Been fucking me up 😂
Spelled with an R, pronounced like an H
Royce was the smallest in the family, to prove their point at the time, they put the little guy in, and won
And they only put him against strikers that had no experience. The times he got out in there with wrestlers he got dominated. Rickson would of gotten exposed by Sakuraba.
Rickson Gracie would have destroyed Kazushi Sakuraba.
He would also destroy fedor and jon jones
Hickson, hoyce and horion lmao 🤣
So if they couldn’t use Rickson for that reason then why use Royce? There were a lot more Gracies at that time better than Royce.
I believe what Rorion and Helio said, use the smaller less skilled Royce Gracie to really prove the effectiveness of GJJ.
Because royce stayed at torrance academy and didmt break away like rickson.
Because this is all just the mythology of Rickson and Gracie JJ that's existed since UFC 1 (at least in north America)

Mike Richardson No rules. Gotta use what you can use to maintain distance control when a big ole boy trynna smash your face in. I don’t think it’s dirty at all. Royce is just perfect man to rep jujutsu. If rickson rep jujutsu it not gonna works. People gonna said nonsense like rickson win cause of physical strength not skills or techniques. So royce is just perfect. He dont look athletic. Just pure skills and techniques.
Joyce would have lost to Dan Severn in their fight had Dan been willing to maul him with strikes. If its True Rickson was more dominate top fighter that would have been an interesting fight as Severn was a a wrestler with no bottom game then.

Rickson was the bull in the woods. It should have been him. Love Royce, but.....

Early UFC would have been far more impressive if a higher level of talent was allowed in all the way around.
they wanted to prove a weaker guy could beat everyone with BJJ
Rickson # 1
I asked my teacher Master Francisco Mansur once about who the best fighter he ever saw was, he said, very quickly, Rickson
Rickson was on a different level. If Royce dominated the early UFC, Rickson would have annihilated the UFC. Rorion and his big head should have just shown what the greatest BJJ practitioner (Rickson) could have done back in 1993
Right on and then there's Rolls Gracie, who Rickson credits why he became so good. RIP Rolls.
yeah but he didnt... he fought twice in pride, but never tried enough to get a title, he may have been the greatest, but he has no titles to prove it in mma, therefore, shoulda coulda woulda... but didnt.
Could’ve , should’ve, would’ve…
History will always have Royce as the game changer for martial arts who introduced and popularised the ground game and it’s effectiveness and efficiency to win a match.
Rickson may have been goku and Bruce Lee together, but it didn’t happen.
absofuckinglutely
I heard the Joe Rogan version.
Lets face the facts, The Roice Challenge was already a thing and winning everything...
I would be happy to see Rixon or Jixon or Rolls , whom ever , trying to wrestle Karelin.
I have no doubt that prime Rickson could take prime Aleksander Karelin, should both not cross train any more than they already did. Of course, it's be under BJJ rules.
Karelin would start strong but w/no GNP training and no sub defense, he'd walk into a submission. Like how inexperienced Brock Lesnar gave his leg to Frank Mir.
Idk too much about Karelin (only the famous stuff.) He competed at 6'3", 285 lbs. His signature move is "The Karelin Lift." The Karelin Lift is basically a dead lift (opponent is belly down, limp - dead weight, to avoid being pinned.)
Rickson could care less how many times Karelin brute forces him up and down. Idc how strong Karelin is - there is no perfect athlete and Karelin would gas trying to chain nonstop sprinting moves on an opponent who gives no shits about the clock.
Even Fedor, who respects Karelin a great deal (as all Russians do) said it would be unfair to compare Fedor vs Karelin, due to the rules differences between Greco-Roman and MMA.

Rickson depends on hype. He won some fights but hyped his records without any proof of anything. Training matches don't count. Royce did good till others realized you had to grapple. Then we saw how his skill matched up against MMA fighters. So they created super fights. Then it showed how he wasn't going to win any longer. So he left. Just like in Pride and Sakuraba. One Gracie after another vs someone who understood Grappling. Watch the video's. Gracie wouldn't even fight at one point till the gracies got their way. And Royce still lost.
Why does nobody talk about Relson ?
John Mccarthy looked like such a doosh back in the day I'm glad he grew out of that phase
Here's a good drinking game: the first name, is it a Gracie, or a Targaryen?
he looks like ben affleck
Much respect for Rickson, probably is/was better than Royce, but I can’t say for sure that he would’ve done as well as Royce in the UFC at that time.
Rickson recently did the Jocko podcast. Excellent interview and gives his side of this
Damn I thought it was a size thing this whole time but if Big John says it’s BS then that it is. 🤔
McCarthy is wrong about Rickson's physical attributes. Nobody worked harder in the family at strength, stamina as well as technique. Sure he was only ten pounds heavier but it was 10 pounds of muscle that doesn't get tired, like ever. It's one attribute Rigan Machado talked about, Rickson gets stronger as the fight goes on. Rickson also did wicked neck exercises using a strong rubber band wrapped around his head secured to a wall or door. That's why he could take a punch. The neck absorbs the shock. Funaki broke his orbital bone in his face in the opening exchange and it didn't even slow him down. His front knee kicks were very strong too. Damaging. Not just for diversion.
He took a punch from funaki, a man with no striking ability and no neck strengthening helps punch resistance.Rickson has never been hit with any good head punches in any fight.
Karelin would have smashed them all.
Karelin never trained mma
"truth" ... none of that whole circus Gracie Jiu Jitsu infomercial bullcrap show was real
Sakuraba smashed them all until he couldnt tho 🤷♂️
