Is that true? Where are the videos? Is there an archive? I'm even skeptical of that 887-2 record. Did Karelin keep a journal? He wrestled in Sweden, localy in Novi, and on low profile tours so who was keeping track of the amount of matches? I believe that he went undefeated over that 13 year period but there is more to it. Even a level college wrestler could go 1000-0 if he only faced low level competition. His top competition record was closer to 200-0 if you add up his worlds, olympics, euros, and national events which he himself said were the tournaments he trained to peak for. That's probably the more significant number whatever it is. The account I've seen of the 1987 loss is that nothing happened in the match and the ref raised Karelin's opponent arm because of seniority and being the team captain. It was a stalemate.
I believe there were days when people kept unofficial vale tudo records outside of sanctions. They competed in a true amateur sense in their gyms, but treated it like a real sport. This is why Helio called out Rickson, saying that by there rules, Helio had a million fights.
this is still true today. I trained mma years ago and there were what people call "gym fights". they don't count for anything other than pride. but they happened.
if you look at ricksons record, he was active till the year 2000. most of his "biggest wins" came in the mid ninetees when he won the valt tudo japan tournaments, beating low level or completely unkown opponents. the problem with this is that at this time, you already had guys like frank and ken schamrock, semmy schilt, tank abbott, don frye, bas rutten, mark coleman, dan severn and a TON of others competing at the same time. and rickson refused to those guys. all he did was talk. that makes him the charlie zelenoff of mma!!
I'm not gonna put him to zelenoff level, but his official record is not very impressive. He does have some Notable names including masakatsu funaki and Yuki nakai who have been blinded by gordeau. Most of his opponents are unknown names and some Japanese pro wrestlers like nobuhiko takada.
I witnessed charlie own Mayweather sr. Hes a bad dude. He needs to fight fury for the big bux. He deserves it. Relatively in unknows bad ass. Kim k. Was out to make him look bad because he broke up with her. That's all. Charlie is damn good.. im pretty sure
Rickson Gracie claiming to be undefeated is an insult to the greats like good ol’ Uncle Chael. How dare he try to fake it into the ranks of true undefeated champions like Chael.
A record like this isn't completely unheard of. Remember Lomachenko was 396-1 as an amateur boxer, and he avenged his 1 loss twice. So I kinda believe Rickson.
Pat b yeah but top pro boxing matches are different to amateurs. You are beating nobodies and low skilled fighters. Top ranked pro fights you are fighting against very highly skilled opponents.

I totally get why anyone would not believe that, but only people that either trained with him or saw him training PERSONALLY can understand that the statement is true. I’ve witnessed with my own eyes Rickson beating more than 10 BJJ BLACK BELTS ( all ready to compete, in top shape to compete at the Pan American Tournament in LA, 1996) immediately after that he continue to train with all Brown belts, then purple belts, the whole thing lasted about 60 to 90 min. He wrestled with at least 20 people in a row, submitting every single one. All the athletes came from different gyms to visit Rickson and do their final training before competition. After the 10th match or so, all Rickson needed was a few yoga deep stomach breaths to continue, like between 30 to 60 sec rest only between every match, it was incredible to see some of the biggest name in BJJ at the time getting tapped out effortlessly by Rickson.
I mean if Rickson is gonna include all of those different things into his record, I feel like he also has to include the actual sanctioned match against Ron Tripp, which he lost.
Fighters with the most wins in MMA history: Travis Fulton (257) Dan Severn (101) Jeremy Horn (91) Travis Wiuff (77) Luis Santos (65) Tony Lopez (64) Ikuhisa Minowa (64) Yuki Kondo (61) Jeff Monson (60) Alexey Oleynik (60)

You shouldn't believe it, because we have one of his losses on record. He lost to Ron Tripp in 1993. He's a known liar. I talked to his brother, Relson, in 2001 and he joked about Rickson's fake record.
Nailed this perfectly, anyone else is clearly bs. Rickson was the most dominant person in combat for the entirety of his life of fighting. Further ahead in technique and bigger inner dog than anyone in the cage, in the gym and on the streets. There are videos of him settling disputes in backrooms 1 on 1, not a sanctioned match and not a practice, a mutual combat till tap or nap. Rougher times then
Yup. And it goes beyond just Rickson saying it. People go back and forth about the number, but I don't remember anyone ever coming out saying they kicked his ass and it was all BS. Probably because you'd then have to fight Rickson then spend some time in the hospital before a few months of physical therapy.

You keep almost telling the Mark Schultz black belt story right. The part you leave out is that he went back to Pedro Sauer and said if anybody can take it from me, he can have it. Then Pedro said he was worthy of the black belt. So while he bought his, it was endorsed by Pedro Sauer, which seems to be an important part of the story. And here's the video of Mark correcting you specifically. ruclips.net/video/MyThSj9EXrw/видео.html
My understanding is that Ricksons own father called bs on that number and said it was actually the 11 that are recorded and that Rickson counts every sparring session , brotherly fight etc and that if he did that he would have a million fights to his name! I am only repeating what I have read elsewhere more than once so cannot say this is 100% true.
You have GOT to love some of the closed-captions that come across the bottom of these RUclips videos... Was watching this with captions turned on, and at about the 1min:12sec mark (where Uncle Chael says "Rickson Gracie beat 450 men... that's it...!!"), the captions read as "Pigs and gravy, 450 men"... I've seen hundreds of odd caption errors, but this ranks up there with the funniest I've read YET !!!😂
I can add some perspective to this. The record was not a claim that was made by Rickson, it was a list of all his matches, formal or informal, as a black belt, made by I think, a fanboy, who posted the list online. I was lucky enough to train with Rickson a couple times in the mid-90s and he never referred to this. But there is something to the word "fight" (which I have always hated) and its interpretation. Keep in mind this sort of hyperbole was often created and used by NHB fight promoters to hype up fighters. This is why Mario Sperry was promoted in his debut MMA fight as having a 150-0 record. I still have that old Rickson list stored somewhere on my old computer.
Chael makes a good point, about every match at practice counting, if you follow Rickson's line of reasoning, but I think there's a clear line to draw. People would go to his seminars just to roll with him at the end. He would roll with them all, and he didn't stop until each one said they were done. Not just after he tapped them, which he most definitely did, but after they gave up. They weren't rolling like teammates do at practice, they were hoping to tap him just once, or get him to say he was tired, and wanted a rest. He knew that, if one of them tapped him after being tapped 10 x, they would run and tell the world that they tapped RIckson Gracie. He knew that, if they asked if he wanted to keep going, and he said that he wanted to give the other guys a chance, they would run and tell the world that he quit, because he was either tired, or knew they were eventually going to tap him. Those are non-friendly competitions. It's fair to count them. Also, some people came to his dojo to challenge him. Some are recorded, some are not. He would offer to promote it, and fight publicly, so they could all make some money, but some wanted a private shot at the crown, so they didn't risk losing publicly. Part of why the jujitsu world that is full of guys with big egos hasn't produced one person to call BS could be that they all went to a Rickson seminar once, and threw everything they had at him to no avail. Maybe it doesn't matter them if it's 50, 150, or 450; they each guy individually knows that it was 100% of the guys he knows who are absolute bruisers with many titles to their name who personally told him that Rickson did the same thing to them.
in brazil we have several jiu-jitsu competitions throughout the year, in bigger events you fight about 10 or more fighters before getting a medal. It's not hard to imagine the number he spoke if he's someone quite active! I don't know what competitions are like in other countries, but here you have to fight several fighters before reaching a final.
Chael, use an assumptive close during your warranty pitch for the Ridge wallet. "When you decide to keep it, do nothing. If it's not for you, return it within...blah blah"
The closest record to that claim is Loma's amateur boxing record at 396-1 which is definitely an amazing feat. but if he's talking jiu jitsu maybe it could be true but it's something that really needs some proof.
In the year 1995 there could have been the most interesting 4 man tournament of all time: Rickson gracie (jiu jitsu) Peter Aerts (kickboxing) Alexander Karelin( wrestling) Mike Tyson(boxing). If you took these 4 out of their gyms while they were training in their respective sports and put them against each other with no prep under curent mma rules, who would have won!
I heard Rickson's own father say, his record was BS in not so many words. He said, he must have counted every single time he tapped somebody to get to that number...Even beginner students...
@@SAM-ru4vx ... Yup, sub or stoppage... There's a gang of Gracie's and if someone takes a shot at Rickson then they piss Every damn one of those Gracie's off
"Rickson's only official loss in martial arts competition came at the 1993 U.S. Sambo Championships in Norman, Oklahoma. Rickson, claimed to be a former gold medalist at 1980 Pan American Sambo Championships at 74 kilograms,[40] faced judo and sambo champion Ron Tripp. Tripp threw Gracie to the canvas by uchi mata in 47 seconds, thus giving Tripp absolute victory under FIAS International Sambo rules. Rickson disputed this loss, claiming he was misinformed of the rules of the event, despite claiming to be a two-time Pan American Sambo champion."
Gracies only did so well because they always insisted on rules that favored their style. When you strip them of all the rules they insist on having, they never fared so well.
I know everyone likes to hate on the 400-0 record claim. From what I am able to gather, Rickson in his prime was considered unsubmittable in a jiu jitsu (submission only) match. Check out what Jean-Jacques Machado has to say about him in the Joe Rogan podcast. Jean-Jacques is legit as they come, and he says that Rickson would let other high level black belts put him in whatever position, say a fully locked RNC, then escape. I think the notion that Rickson never lost a BJJ match is quite credible. That leaves us with the Vale Tudo fights, Pride, and any street fight he might have gotten himself into. I think the Vale Tudo and Pride fights are on video. So ... maybe he was 400-0
Marco Ruas called him out. Bas Rutten called him out. Sakuraba called him out. Fedor called him out. Rickson dodged all of them. Instead fought some fake show wrestlers so inflate his record to 10-0. LoL.
I read his book Breath and I must say that it’s the best book I’ve ever read. Soo well written and full of passion. The Ending tho! The ending was straight out of a Japanese Anime ending
Chael brought up Mark Schultz, from what I understand back in mid 90's Rickson and Mark had a submission match in the gym Rickson caught Mark in an Armbar and Schultz was pissed off about that. I wish that match was filmed because I heard it lasted over 10 minutes or something not sure exactly how long.
This is a fascinating point. It sorta mimics the difference between authoritarian government and a democracy. I’ll accept Chael’s logic to a degree, but we can also qualify it by saying he never fought Jonny Bones or Izzy and the sport has evolved a great deal since his time. On the other hand, we should also qualify it in the other direction with a more significant point than this obscure number of people he beat. His whole family is filled with Jiu Jitsu masters who have all grappled with each other a lot. Royce once said that he was a bit reluctant to say who was better than who, because he knew he wasn’t the best and didn’t want to get in trouble with his brothers - but he was willing to say that Rickson beat everyone. I think that not only surviving, but being the Jedi master of the Gracie gauntlet automatically means you are one tough motherfucker.
He never said that. His 400-0 mark includes "best of" type of matches against other black belts in non-sanctioned competition. He would never be 400-0 in MMA or no-holds-barred because that is completely impossible(no matter how skilled you are, you are bound to make a mistake somewhere). But it's possible that he's 400-0 in friendly competitive matches against other black belts. All black belts that ever roled with rickson say that he made feel like they've never roled before. He is quite phenomenally good at BJJ.
They left their dojo open to challenge by any style for years. Also Vale Tudo is (no holds barred not MMA) NHB. I would easily assume these guys were challenged about 365 days a year so yeah it is probably at least double this number. Lol, I love Rickson G bc a fight is a fight🤷✊🏆
Let’s be honest. Most of the Gracies looked very average during Pride FC. They mainly beat up on undersize junior varsity Japanese men. We didn’t see any of the Gracies challenge Kevin Randal, Fedor E., Bas Rutten, W. Silva, Igor V., Mirko, Mark Coleman….Gotta give it to Sakuraba and Minowa. They fought everyone and died in some of those fights.
This actually gives some context but let’s remember that a fight with Rickson would quickly become a grappling match against a white belt level opponent.
In the movie Choke his dad Helio himself said that was bullshit. And he also said something like if that is how you count fights than I’m like 800-0. Rickson the goat tho
I get it Rickson is a legend, but when you watch the video clips his fights were not great to watch. Nothing like the competition today. They all seemed like a guy who was fighting in a very controlled setting against competition that he should beat. And he took the fight exactly where he needed to take it in order to win. But he wasn’t even as impressive looking as early Rhonda, and the guys today would wash him. There striking is far too good. He was a guy that was great at his exact sport. For example, Charles Oliviera is an improved version of him. Deadly on the feet and a master on the ground. And he’s a guy that takes on all comers. The same can’t be said for Rickson. Him turning down fights is documented and has been many times.
Do you know how much evidence Chael has when professing that no one ever challenged Rickson’s claim? ZERO. “That which is asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.” Rickson and Chael: You both are DISMISSED!
Man, I am NOT into the counting of fights and etc. But Rickson Gracie during his era , he literally FUCKED ALL OF THEM UP WITH NO RIVALS THAT COULD’VE MET HIS TALENT. He went to a random BJJ seminar and submitted dudes like walking the dog. This dudes is the legit of the Life of the Samurai. Now with that said, it’s pretty difficult to claim this now a days as everybody is up to date in fighting but that’s another topic for another day.
Think of some of the ancient warriors that must of had to of existed that went into battle or something and came out on top through out their life's and we will never know what they did, how many people they defeated, how many battles they faced, etc. It gets pretty crazy thinking about stuff like that during the era's of hand to hand combat wars..
I'm a massive fan of Rickson, but we know for a fact that his record has at least 1 loss to Ron Tripp in Sambo (despite my belief that if they did that match a million times again Rickson would win).
I spoke with Mark Tripp (Ron’s brother)at his dojo just outside Detroit. He told me about this tournament and match. He basically said Rickson wasn’t in the same class as the Sambo or Judo players on his feet, or his ability to throw people. He also said it was either brave or arrogant of him to even enter this type of tournament. This was around 1994 or 95 when I stopped in his dojo curious about GJJ. The inflated records were just part of the hype and the era.
@@BlueeyesofSkye I can believe Rickson's stand-up (throws/trips/sweeps) wasn't in the same league as the other people's. Through one way or another a lot of the Gracie History has either been tweaked, converted, or just out-right made-up.

Did he break Jon Jones' toe though? Yeah thought not. Undefeated, undisputed and never lost a round.
I believe there were days when people kept unofficial vale tudo records outside of sanctions. They competed in a true amateur sense in their gyms, but treated it like a real sport. This is why Helio called out Rickson, saying that by there rules, Helio had a million fights.

Then Pedro said he was worthy of the black belt. So while he bought his, it was endorsed by Pedro Sauer, which seems to be an important part of the story. And here's the video of Mark correcting you specifically. ruclips.net/video/MyThSj9EXrw/видео.html

I've seen hundreds of odd caption errors, but this ranks up there with the funniest I've read YET !!!😂
I never liked it when ju jitsu people called matches fights lol
He is only 450-0 because he was too scared to fight Lord Chael.

Check out what Jean-Jacques Machado has to say about him in the Joe Rogan podcast. Jean-Jacques is legit as they come, and he says that Rickson would let other high level black belts put him in whatever position, say a fully locked RNC, then escape.
I heard Chaels combined record is 451-0. Just saying ..
Why wouldn't he fight Bas or Sakuraba huh.
