I love how the tarot card achievements give a plus meaning to the game, and if you go by that logic, the lighthouse is the Tower card. Meaning, that no matter what you do, it is meant to fall and crumble one way or another.

I kinda admire lighthouse keepers. It seems like it was a noble, but very lonely job. And any job with such endless isolation is bound to be scary. That’s probably why there’s so much horror based around lighthouses. The fear of feeling like someone is around when you’re supposed to be alone. Either someone is there to kill you, or you really are completely alone. Both options are scary.

It’s very easy to make it seem scary when it’s on an island so far from the mainland. Mostly due to weather, the unknown, the isolation, and the mundanity making it very easy to lose your grasp of the passage of time. Not including and pre-existing undiagnosed mental issues or disorders that could be triggered by such a prolonged stay in such an environment. Most people probably couldn’t handle the dreary depressing atmosphere for so many days without distraction, let alone complete isolation.

Hey there! I'm one of the developers of the game :D
The first thing I probably want to mention is that you've made this video! I mean, the backstory is that I had a small RUclipsrs list like less than 15 names who I was going to send the game to review, and you were in that list but with a side note like "Nah this guy is too big I think he probably won't even notice a message from me and why will he even care about this small unknown trashy indie horror you've made" yeah I guess now it sounds stupid.
When my pal sent me a link to this video I've lost my jaw as I hadn't even get to the list yet. Thank you! That felt really... badass! And "badass" is a great word for how you played the game lol
You figured it right. The whole thing, the cycle, the old keeper related to the events happening. I was worrying a lot that all of the reviews we'll receive would be "I don't get it is there a storyline at all the game has no words wtf" but it seems it had just enough words. It's kinda tricky right now, I know, some of the moments we plan to update and polish, it was all done in a big hurry. But you got it and it feels so good lol.
So I understand now that I should have never had a doubt in you - the words are true. You're a manly badass hero and I was a fool for missing that point.
Btw, the whole game came out from the Global Game Jam 2020, where we decided to make a game without a word. We left a few sentences after all and decided to give some tips in achievements and I'm glad it worked.
P.S. Thanks for cutting out the sacks part lol. I've noticed how you started to go up after the first one being hanged. Everyone does. We'll make it more clear. :D Or cut the number of sacks required.

Its not just Manly who loves this game, but the masses. This is my favorite indie horror game of this year!!
I have 1 Question though Vitaliy. Is the reason the lighthouse falls apart in the shotgun ending (and in the Ritual Complete ending) because the lighthouse was not a real "Manmade" Lighthouse; but instead the lighthouse was connected with the heart and the flesh of the entity/island? Basically, was the lighthouse created by the evil that commanded the mothman in order to lure people to the island for the ritual?
If it is, I really love that idea. Just like moths drawn to a light or flame, people were drawn to a lighthouse that was not even real in search of work.

I'm liking this increase of lighthouse themed games. Even if they're man made, lighthouses will always appear otherworldly to me. I'd love to visit one someday and look out on the ocean horizon. The fact that so many ships and sailors relied on them to be a literal beacon in the dark and stormy waters, but now of course tech has advanced kinda makes me feel like they're forgotten relics.

Sapphire if you are looking for a haunted lighthouse, I would say go to Saint Augustine, Florida, USA (if you are not from here). Way before Ghost Hunters even investigated the lighthouse, I visited it during the day and felt like someone was trying to push me down the stairs. It was later in the day and there wasn’t really anyone there. I 100% believe it was the owner who committed suicide. He wanted us OUT.
Ghost Hunters found some shadows and captured them on camera. You should check it out if you want to visit a beautiful lighthouse AND get some haunted insight. I feel sorry for the previous owner as he felt despaired for some reason. I don’t know why though and don’t know that history.

I had one where the ancient manifestation of evil only existed within the light range of the lighthouse, and was strongest when the ambient light was the brightest, mostly patrolling along the sweep of the lighthouse's beam. I was kinda tired of dark always being where the evil thing lurked, and thought it would be interesting to force the protagonists to hide in the shadows and pray that there were no gaps in their refuge while the creature stalked. Shadows are relatively easy to banish, they are a void and can easily be filled with very little light. Light... not so much. Light is a presence, and thus has to be blocked, redirected, and has a way of getting around barriers that aren't carefully thought out.

Not sure if it was inspired by Robert Eggers's The Lighthouse, the one chapter in Uzumaki or even Seashells, which was based around a lighthouse but I think it's cool. The ocean is still a freaky place as we have only covered a portion out there and stuff like The Lighthouse are freaky since that movie had you questioning what was happening and what was all in their heads.

  • @ClaireCrowles

I actually really really loved this game. It was very atmospheric, good plot, great scare with very few jumpscares, with a very good use of camera perspective to build tension. If it was a movie I'd say it was shot really really well, every camera framing was well-thought, and it respected the #1 rule of horror stuff up until very late in the game: to not show the actual monster, because nothing builds tension more than not knowing what are you facing. Fear of the unknown and unseen is the best, biggest fears and the devs used it very well. Truly big kudos to them.
On a side note, when Manly at 00:05 said "a horror game... where really no one lives under the lighthouse, please don't check there" I got big Cecil from Welcome To Night Vale vibes.

  • @Rainbow_Fluxx
    @Rainbow_Fluxx 4 года назад +158

It looks like that's definitely it, a continuous cycle until it ends one way or the other. I know Manly said the true ending is grabbing the gun and shooting the mothman thing but I figured an alt. to the true ending is the mothman killing the human in the chase. It looks like the cycle continues because if the human does escape, they get curious anyway and dive deeper, obtain the cursed chest and items, get sick, turn into the larvae and then a mothman themselves and it just continues forever when yet another human arrives at the lighthouse.
The mothman seems to kind of 'remember' who he is when listening to the music. Hence you're then given the next chance at killing the man. Maybe the mothman in that moment realizes he has to end this and make sure he's the last one, and knows if he lets the human escape then there'll be more after him.
For the shotgun true ending it's like Manly said, kinda boring but similar since it's trying to end the cycle, other than the human wins and monsters lose. But even in that alt. true ending the humans win, but they had to sacrafice a human for them to, even if it's the monster killing him.
I really like thinking super deeply about stuff for literally no reason at 3AM.

_I'll never look at moths the same way again_
    Spoilers:
This was a really cool experience & I agree with your interpretations absolutely. I think the boatman is like a priest so to speak for the Old Moth God. Somehow he discovered the Moth, maybe in sailing & fell under its power. So the original keeper who is the Moth/Man we see is unhappy & afraid of the Moth God - he stopped to listen to the music maybe remembering his past life as a man - and he wanted to be killed to end the cycle of sacrifices.
Playing as the former keeper & the new one was a great twist & very unique.
If this is the developer's first game, they did a wonderful job of capturing unease and horror and that that anxiety of not knowing what the heck is going on. The scene with all those moths outside the lighthouse windows was really freaky as was seeing the face on the giant caterpillar.
Thank you for all the endings, as always and for your commentary and explanation.

ending 1: cycle ends, ritual completes, whatever exists underneath the lighthouse has arisen to the material world because you literally caught yourself and created a proper time loop. When two people of their same self meet in the same timeline things happen~
ending 2: cycle repeats because you failed to meet yourself. the game's events repeats
ending 3: Cycle ends, the being does not reach the Material world and the keeper is freed of their duty. So in reality our mission all along was to kill the cycle and that's why their is always an endless amount of "keepers" heading to the island. It can be argued that the island itself is actually outside the time loop; as you do see images of yourself at the 2nd of cycle 3 ending on the way to the light house at the same time there are two in a boat too. Chest feels like Pandora's box honestly, forbidden knowledge. The gun is a metaphor for force of will and enlightenment: overcoming the burden of knowledge and achieving conscious will over the cycle: hence it's defeated and "killed" by unlocking the chest and achieving "understanding" before the cycle loops you around again due to ignorance.

Not sure if anyone's already said this but the moth creature could very well be a reference to Lovecrafts race of space-faring aliens the Mi-go, which were often described as having insect-like bodies mixed with fungal growths. Or it could just be an original thing, but I felt it was worth pointing out the similarities. The things could actually fly in space under their own power, it was crazy.

I have decided the spider mothman creature's name is bob. He likes to play pranks and give hugs, but sometimes he hugs too tight. He's keeping everyone under the lighthouse to have tea parties and play D&D. He used to be small and loved climbing things but he got too big and accidentally broke your roof. He eats seagulls and got upset you were digging up his food. The empty holes are because he already ate those seagulls. He hid the coins around the island as a fun little scavenger hunt because he thought you might get bored. He wants you to join because his D&D team is missing a player. Also the moths are because he plants so many flowers come spring.

In the opening he states he thinks the previous lighthouse keeper took a boat and ran. But there’s a boat already on the island. He brings a new person no matter the ending because he expects the player to already be turned into a new mothman.

I'm confused by the chest. I assume they are all the same chest, but one opens underground and unleashes moths, one gets rowed away, and one has a shotgun inside. Did the first keeper drag the chest away and put a shotgun inside to get someone to use it eventually, knowing he would become a monster? With the cyclic design, I think these few scenes are the ones that only happen once (beginning and end of cycle).

    • @trulers8713

The way i see it is that the previous lighthouse keeper had a shotgun in a chest in his home, upon becoming the monster he made his new home under the lighthouse and had an identical chest, however the underground lighthouse hasn't quite reached gunsmithing technology so they just used an eldrich unlimited moth chest instead.

The puzzle in which it presents itself, the tension it builds, while having already that dreadful atmosphere and oh boy that twist.
It’s got Kafka’s „metamorphosis“ theme goin, but with a twisted cosmic horror taste and not „my family hates me, but I’m also a giant immobile bug now“-way.
Also I just really like those old school graphics on these kinds games, like Lost in Vivo.
It’s not super detailed models and clean textures, which leads to not also direct uncanny valley, but also leaving things to your imagination.
Not to mention the designs, especially the monsters, is brilliant.

I'm thinking loop, but maybe not time loop.
After you fall into the flesh pit you "see" how the whole thing started, then the next lighthouse keeper comes and you proceed to terrorize him as the previous one did you.
The lighthouse falls when you kill the next lighthouse keeper before he could fall into the flesh pit, or you kill the previous lighthouse keeper before he can lure you to the flesh pit.
The lighthouse stands ending is the next lighthouse keeper' AI inevitably leading him to fall into the flesh pit afterward, mothman you disintegrates as the cycle continues.
The second, third, or later lighthouse keeper is being brought in the boat regardless of the ending, since until the lighthouse falls the cycle is still being perpetuated.
