    Thank you for this vidéo.
    I love the Carène.
    For anyone concerned about the state of the nib if you get a brand new Carène :
    I have had four in my life, and got a fifth one for my husband - they were all brand new. All five wrote wonderfully well, just as smooth and wet exactly how I like it, out of the box, no tuning needed (2 Mediums, 2 Fine, 1 Oblique Fine). So I can say as a généralisation, you can trust this pen out of the box .

    The Waterman Carene is why I am into fountain pens in the first place. My 7th grade English teacher wrote with an amber Carene at her desk. I asked about it, was even more interested, got a LAMY Al-Star and a little over a decade later I have more fountain pens than I care to admit.
    Despite the Carene being the pen that ignited my interest in fountain pens I don’t own one, but I’m really thinking I may need to change that and get an amber Carene to match my old teacher’s.
    Thanks for the lovely video!

    Beautiful Sea Green Carene! I have the Waterman Carene L’Essence du Bleu. I had been looking for a Carene for quite some time and chose the one I got for the limited edition color. Mine is a medium, and very wet. I didn’t get the sweet deal you did, but picked it up for a better than usual prices on a weekend sale. Thanks for your great reviews!

    I learned something on my Carene I thought you would find interesting. I ordered a spare nib, a stub, and it didn’t line up with the end of the pen. I found out that the section threads are held in place with a little barrel you can unscrew. The threads have one direction with a little notch on one side that holds it in spot but you can flip it around and adjust the thread location to get it to align.

    I’ve gushed about the Carene forever by now. I used to own three; sold one, so I still have two (Essential Silver and an all-burgundy w/silver trim). I have the fine and broad nibs. Very stiff nibs, but so stylish in appearance and splendid writers. I really wanted a Carene with a stub. But I could never find one in the pen color combination I wanted. The pens were always rather pricey but totally worth it to me. Or else I’d never have bought three of them. The Carene is still a supermodel on the Waterman catwalk ramp. ❤️

    I have a used 149 that had a *terrible* broad nib on arrival. Feeler gauges didn't work this time, but a couple swipes with some micromesh between the tines and it' now writes like a dream. It was uncomfortable adjusting that expensive of a pen, but I'm glad I did!

    My Waterman Phileas from the 1990s (my first and still a favorite fountain pen) also has a glass converter with a metal collar. That may have been Waterman's standard converter at the time. That Carene is gorgeous.

    • @NikeaTiber
      @NikeaTiber Год назад +1

      My phileas also has this converter, but it is also a bit of a frankenpen- blue cap, green barrel, bock #6 feed, and either a #6 bock titanium nib or a #6 conklin 1.1 stub.
      I tried out the nib & feed swap on a lark and was surprised when it fit and didn't leak, and was even more pleasantly surprised that the cap snaps on without tip collision.
      In terms of nib adjustment the titanium nib took me about 45 minutes of work to coax it to write with proper inkflow and as the medium it is supposed to be rather than the stingily-dry fine it was from the factory. Writes like a wet laser beam now and I enjoy it, even though a wet broad is my preference.
      I'm talking pens here; pull your mind out of the gutter.

  • @osirisgolad
    @osirisgolad Год назад +2

    What I usually do with inlaid nibs is slip two thin strips of brass shim between the tines below the tipping, and then you have something to grab onto. I just sort of grab the shims and then push the tips of my thumbs together to lever the tines apart, which gives you a great deal of control over how much pressure you're applying. You also don't run the risk of twisting or lifting the tines because you are pulling them apart in a flat plane while your index fingers on the bottom of the feed are keeping your thumbs from going up or down.

    • @Doodlebud
      @Doodlebud  Год назад

I got it with a F nib, which to me writes like a fat Medium. Since I prefer Japanese F, I special ordered an EF nib unit for an additional $90. I couldn't be more disappointed. Line width is perfect. But it needs significant coaxing to start writing, even after setting it down for 3 minutes, fully capped. Once it gets started, it writes well, no problem. I don't have the confidence to tune the nib, if that would even help. Sadly, this beautiful pen sits at the bottom of my never-use-it-again drawer.

    I love mine. The nib is outstanding. Especially for a company that makes its money mostly from plastic food storage 😆 What I've heard so far people seemed to be rather satisfied with Waterman and Parker gold nibs and I had the impression that they are rather consistent, smooth, maybe a bit prone to baby's bottom. I'm not sure whether I'm just lucky but both of my modern Dufolds (one is an Akkerman, yeah 😎) and my Carène had outstanding nibs out of the box. I had the opinion that maybe more fashionable fountain pen companies could actually learn something from Rubbermaid 🤪 Though based on your experience it seems that their QA isn't flawless as well. Anyway, luckily you managed to fix it and ended up with a fantastic pen for a bargain 👍

    I've always liked the Waterman Carene in both fountain pens and ballpoints. It has a brass body, which gives it a nice heft without being too heavy. The design is unique and now iconic. Waterman Carene medium nibs write on the fat side and lay down a a nice wet line. The Carene used to be available in quite a few different finishes, most of which are no longer produced. The Carene also comes in a Deluxe model with a variety of metal caps.
    Recently I saw an older, discontinued Carene Deluxe in emerald green with a textured gold cap - absolutely gorgeous! I have two Carenes, the Black Sea (black and silver) and another in Glossy Red. Worth acknowledgment at least, that learning a few principles of basic repairs and tuning on just about anything can set you up to save MONUMENTAL amounts of money in life in general. Either you can learn which deals are really STEALS with just a small investment of "elbow grease and sweat equity" or you can (at the very least) learn the deals that sound and look great on paper but spiral hopelessly out of control... such that you're "already in too deep to back out" before you realize you're in any kind of trouble.
    Stands to reason, fountain pens would be another of the things that follows that trend. It IS a handsome looking pen, and I'm glad you've only grown to appreciate it more for the time and patience to tune it in and play... as it were.
    Reminds ME (though just how my brain "works") of the last 3 or 4 computers and more specifically LAPTOPS, I've picked up in the collection. I don't think I've spent more than $100 (US) on a computer in the last 25 years... not even ONCE! It's not because I'm some kind of geeky genius, either. Computers (just for instance) are 100% MODULAR construction. There really isn't anything you can't replace with a screwdriver and a pair of needlenose pliers... AND 99 out of 100 computers "gone bad" are something dubiously small. Bought a laptop about 4 years ago, less than a year old, $25... WHY? Fan... That's right, the fan had quit. I know why (probably) too. The gal who had it just LOVED the funny sound they make when you BLAST keyboard cleaner through them... Don't do that (btw)... It's not good. Instead, to clean out the fan with keyboard cleaner, PUT A Q-TIP or bamboo skewer or just ANYTHING like that through the fan blades... and THEN blast away.
    SO I unscrewed the panel, took out the fan, and for $10 got a new fan from Ebay... and later someone came by and ABSOLUTELY HAD to have that laptop... I warned I needed to replace it, and it probably wasn't worth the full retail... BUT no, they bought it anyways... FULL retail. Which obviously did NOT go to the next one I bought under similar circumstances...
    Point is, wherever you take up a little interest to fix things rather than chuck 'em, it WILL save you. It'll save you short term, long term, and even MAKE money from time to time. However far you take that is up to YOU... BUT at the very least, you can limp some older things along to the degree that you can eventually afford to buy the upgrade... or even... limp along until the upgrade ACTUALLY DOES make sense for you. NOT everything is 100% more efficient or necessarily better JUST because someone says so to sell you something.
    IN ANY CASE... my tangentials aside... It's a nice pen... and ALWAYS cool to see and share your new shiny toys! ;o)

    Hi Doodlebud,
    I'm trying to choose between the Expert and Carene fountain pen currently, as a present for myself for finishing a project. I'm finding it really hard choosing between the two...haven't found a shop where I can see, feel, touch and try them yet so its all online viewing and reviews which is far from ideal. I only currently have a Waterman Hemisphere so this'll be an upgrade.
    I wanted to ask how you'd compare both, as you have no doubt used them a fair amoutn. What have you noticed? Feel, writing performance, and any other parameters you can comment on to help me decide. Is the Carene noticably 'better' or the next level up from the Expert?
    Thanks!

      Thats a tough one. Both are great, of course the Caren costs more and has the gold inlay nib which is beautiful. I do prefer my Carene over the Expert. The only thing that happens the very odd time is a touch of ink comes out of the filler hole on the underside of the grip. It especially did it with one ink I had in the pen. But since I switched the ink it hasnt happened since. But the color of the Carene I picked up is just so lovely. Timeless classy looking pen

    • @AM4N18
      @AM4N18 Год назад

      Hi @@Doodlebud , thats good to hear so maybe I can't go too wrong with either. One thing I noticed that keeps cropping up in written reviews for the Carene is that the nib is described 'like a nail' and has 'some feedback'. What does that mean and is that considered important how hard/flexible(?) the nib is or is that seen as a negative in the world of fountain pens? I'm guessing its to do with the nib being part of the main body rather than protruding out like a 'normal' one. I'm not an expert by any means so just trying to understand what some of these terms mean.
      For colour choice I think it would be the L'essence de blue for both, I like the pattern. You wouldn't say one writes better than the other then?
      And, is choosing between a medium and fine nib only something you can determine by trying them out? Only ever had medium but that fine you're using looks quite nice and less thin that I thought!
      Many thanks

    • @Doodlebud
      @Doodlebud  Год назад +1

      @@AM4N18 the nib on the Carene has a firm feeling to it. When they say it feels like a nail it doesn't mean like dragging a nail across the page. It more has to do with it's a firm nib which doesn't have any bounce or give to it. I agree with that. It is smooth but does have feedback. As far as nib width it all depends what you're looking for and how you plan to use it. For some pens I pick a different nib point size depending upon how I plan to use that pen. I did a video comparing a bunch of nib sizes to help with that.

    I will comment on your comments about the Lamy 2000. I always carry my Lamy 2000, because no matter it stays in my pen holder, it always writes and writes well. I even lost one, and I immediately bought another. It had a fine nib, while my first had been a medium nib. I did discover that I slightly rotate my pen, so the “F” nib did have a maddening “sweet spot” probably related to my writing style. Nevertheless, I get really upset with the critics. This pen is the best everyday carry for a professional who wants to write with his pen than any pen ever designed. My Montblanc 149 always collects ink in the cap, and I was forever getting ink on my fingers. (Not cool in a business meeting or court room). I asked a German architect writing with a Montblanc 149 what I could do. He said, “Oh, there’s nothing you can do to stop that. You just have to have a cloth with you to wipe away the ink. I have many other complaints about the 149 but it was a gift from an alumn, so I keep it. It will likely be one of several pens I may sell to buy what I think will be my last Grail pen. Look at the Lamy 2000: designed with a hooded nib and fills in such a way that any ink is easily wiped away (completely), it stays wet all the time, writes every time. It is not ostentatious; it is the pen someone needs WHO ACTUALLY WRITES IN THE COURTROOM or CONFERENCE ROOM. I know it is not a status symbol (which is the comment I get from lawyers working on Wall Street or in other high prestige areas. They could care less about anything except the snowflake at the top. Genius was the engineering of the LAMY.
