When I first listened to this recording I was rather disappointed because I was expecting the same Stritchy that recorded this song with Nype over fifty years ago. After several viewings I have realized that Elaine is right there present. Although her voice has changed, the female voice broadens much differently than men, she is absolutely there. En pointe. As she was fifty years ago. This amazes me. Russell almost imitates his vocal nuisances but Stritch reimagines it to suite her. That is an actress. Miss you ES.

Russell Nype is in incredible voice! I love watching Elaine getting more "into it" as the choruses continue. What a piece of Broadway history. I wonder how many times Elaine went on for Merman during the original run of the show. Elaine gives the impression in her one-woman show that Ethel made every performance.

Elaine never went on for Merman BUT did play Sally Adams on tour for over a year. What a coup for young Elaine!

yup. NEVER. Elaine had a hilarious story of Merman "interrupting" one of her out of town performances...from the 2nd row. Wonder if/when we'll ever see a revival of CALL ME MADAM...?

Glenn Leahey there was a bit of buzz while back that Tyne Daly would be in revival. The show need a serious update because it was so topical at the time. Even though I love the score. Mermans Opening number is genius. I’m not a huge fan of Lupone but would definitely run to see a revival with her in it

Never saw the Broadway show but loved the movie with Merman, Donald O'Connor and Vera Lynn.

@@carolineorchange21 I wish Elaine had been chosen to sing in Ethel's place on original cast album.

Stritchy is singing flat, as usual. (But, I love her just the same.)

I love Stritch but the pro here is Nype - Stritch is in her own world never once, not ONCE playing to her singing partner, whereas he's trying to play the song. It's ridiculous - she doesn't even know he's there.

And he won two competitive acting Tonys for his talent. Stritch? A special career Tony.

To be honest they are both loving it the more they get back into it they are old pros they know where each other is. Dont compare it to 50 years before or what merman would have done it doesn't work stritch looked younger the more she enjoyed it to be a fly on the wall or in the wings watching them have fun would be enough at least its recorded and awards dont matter too much the longevity of a career does tho look at shirley bassey 70 years in the buisness this year, not many can have careers like these types of performers now just enjoy it as they will be missed when they are gone

@@wilmingtonresident7758 .... she also won 3 Drama Desk awards, an Obie, 3 Emmys, and an outer Critics Circle Award. And heck, while we're at it, not all people who are great and talented performers win tons of Awards. Merman lost out on tons of them but she was still a fabulous performer, same with Dorothy Loudon who was a sensational singer, dancer and actor. Not to mention that she was nominated for 4, and he was only nominated for the 2 he won. Nothing against Nype, but it's a bit rude to judge a performer based on how many of one specific type of award they win.

Elaine once said she didn't need to be nominated. If she felt her performance was good enough to be nominated, that was enough for her. She recognized the back stage politics.

She did the same thing in the 1950s in the same number with Russell Nype. it was like he was never there. She interacts with him closer to the end of this clip.
