It's interesting that cave holds so many factors: Climate, humidity, darkness, mammals, droppings, fungi/mold/bacteria, insects. (It really is the perfect Petri dish for viruses)

You should read a book by Richard Preston - The hot zone. He was the one that conducted all the research and interviewed people directly involved - both as doctors and researches. The autor of this video mostly copied and did TL;DR of the book 🤷 book is amazing and much more detailed

Excellent, thanks. I collaborate often with chiropterologists here in Jamaica, most recently for five days last week with a couple of guys from N America working on their PhD's. Fortunately, all we have to worry about is histoplasmosis, which doesn't trouble me (presumably immune at this point having been exposed when very young back in Canada, and having been in over 400 caves here). The local people mostly consider bats ugly and evil, so we do our best to stress the benefits (cross-pollination, dispersing seeds, eating agricultural pests). But what we never mention is that in some parts of the world, they're vectors and reservoirs for a lot of very nasty diseases (along with what you mentioned, there's also rabies, although not here). Coincidentally, when discussing that with one of the PhD students, he also talked about how important it is to study their resistance to viruses to help humans do the same. This video has helped to reinforce it. Much appreciated. RS Stewart - Jamaican Caves Organisation.

Thanks for your work! It's sad that you need to use ignorance (of the viral reservoir thing) to battle ignorance (of bats' beneficial nature), but it totally makes sense. I too am a bat (and cave) fan, and it's funny how bats seem to instinctively "turn everybody else off", to quote the cheesy B-movie _It Lives By Night_ (AKA _The Bat People,_ 1974).

Watched the 2025 internet apocalypse, which I found interesting and well done, so chose to view another Dr Ben video, this one. I do appreciate skepticism and realistic analysis, and found that I liked the concise explanation and presentation regarding viral reservoirs at Kitum Cave. Finding information that doesn't "hype" and sticks to facts is difficult. So, I subscribed. Looking forward to watching more.

This is the kind of news that should be spread world wide. The more people that know, the better our chances of finding a solution. When someone gets sick from these viruses the news is world wide. In this age of technology I think there's are people out there who can eradicate these viruses. We don't want to discover too late they figured out how to mutate.

@@DrBenMiles I can see the social aspect of having a face on the thumbnail, but it also tells me "oh hey look it's MrBeast" for example so it also reminds me of the person which might help, but then again, Veritasium doesn't use his face on all of his thumbnails so I might overrate it

EDIT: Guarantee you the vector is something silly like a stagnant pool of water somewhere or something that periodically refills/never drains allowing it to grow some narsty pathogens mixed with elephant and bat poop, purely theoretical though.
