  • I think castles are amazing because they have survived for so long. This is an excellent example of a deserted medieval castle and town that could have rivalled Hereford. The mound and earthworks are very impressive and it has a unique church with an amazing carved door frame right next to it.
The Castle mound was constructed around 1090 making it well over 900 years old and the remains of the stone wall that can still be seen was probably from the end of the 12th century making them over 800 years old.
This is Kilpeck Castle in Herefordshire.

Kilpeck Castle is located here in Herefordshire, roughly 10 miles southwest of Hereford and not far from the Welsh border.
On this map from Historic England, the red shaded area is the castle which is a Grade II listed building, but more significantly a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The map also shows the Church of St Mary and St David that is actually a Grade I listed building and built around 1140 being contemporary with the castle.
The castle was a Motte or mound and Bailey design that was used by the Normans shortly after the conquest of England to control the locals. It would initially have had a wooden building or keep on top of the mound.
