Infotainment systems are made to last. They need to withstand sun, heat, shakes, time. No way your tablet would last 5-10 years in the same environment as a infotainment needs to be. I believe that’s why.
So much flex in the center console also indicates if squeaks and rattles will occur over time. If it's solid, it's more likely to hold together and last the test of time much better

I've been driving a HS for 3500km over the past 3 weeks. It has developed a clunking noise behind/above the glovebox whenever you corner or go over speed bumps. The Automatic Cruise Control is fabulous but it can randomly disengage which is annoying. The gear changes are a bit clunky. There is excessive engine lag when you accelerate gently after a speed humps.
The one I drove has done 3,500 ks & we didn't feel or hear any noises at all, & defently no clunking at all in the trans or when in manual mode. Your s sounds as if it needs to go to the agent & be looked at.
I bought this and within 10 days (and a rushed first service) drove it from Perth to Melbourne. Did roughly 8000km in three weeks and had the 10 000km service after only owning the car for 8 weeks!! Took sometime to get used to as this is the first automatic car I have ever owned (35 years of driving) and there are times when I do call it a 'Nanna' with all the beeping. Having said that I am loving it. I previously had the 2010 Honda CRV which was awesome but I was ready to get a new car and sell the Honda while it was still in good nick. I am enjoying it.
The MG ZS has been the best selling SUV in my country (Chile) so far in 2020 (beating the Rav4). They are pretty solid and reliable, probably one of the best chinese brands out there. Sadly Chinese cars still suffer of underpowered engines and bad fuel economy.

I was given MG HS Essence as a loaner by my dealer while my Ford Mondeo Titanium MD TDi had a water leak from air conditioner repaired. My impressions: build quality seemed good, it was spacious inside, the seats were comfortable and supportive and easily adjusted. It has good visibility. Things I did not like: a blind spot was created in the middle of the windscreen by the rear vision mirror, maybe I could have lowered my seat to overcome this. The ride was not as comfortable as my 5-year-old Mondeo. The MG was definitely noisier inside the cabin. The engine seems to be more labouring than I am used to and I wonder how the MG HS would have gone on a trip traveling 1000 km from Canberra to Ballina carrying my wife and I and three dogs and all of our gear for 10 days holiday. I am sure we would have used lot more than the 56 litres of fuel one way that we did. However, the MG HS Essence feels very nice inside.
MG sales are quite strong in my area of Wales, helped by a keen dealer which has two depots and also a Honda franchise. Honda have lost the plot really with lacklustre designs that are too expensive for what they are and a very limited model range. The price of the MG trounces most similar cars, which is again popular for a region renowned for its parsimonious population who have short arms and very deep pockets.

This is a very informative review which I am quite happy with. My 9 year old Kia Sportage has died on me rather suddenly last week and the engine overhaul isn’t worth fixing at this juncture. The MG HS is in my sights and I’m currently weighing on the pros and cons. Appreciate this.
MG is still a British Brand and Headquartered in the UK. Its just under a Chinese Parent company. I'm sure you didn't call Holden an American Brand with it being owned by GM Motors?

China is really stepping up their game. I remember when people would scoff at a Korean made car, 1996 Hyundai Excel, but Koreans have come a long way now. Give China a few years to catch up and their cars will be a lot more mainstream.
Inoffensive is the nicest thing I can say but it is not desirable in any way. Like others have said, it's heavily 'borrowed' the previous CX-5 styling and somehow made it look boring. Having said that, I do think Chinese cars will improve with every generation and will be a genuine wakeup call for some of the underperformers like Honda, Ford and Subaru. Super review, Paul. Pleasure to watch.
I owned it in November 2020 as car looks great in her first sight. So far impressive but have a serious concern of beeping heat indicator at times which keep you busy seeing at the heat indicator while going for a drive even less than 100KM.
My wife has one MG HS EXCITE MY20. nothing appears lose inside , notification warning sounds are bit annoying, nice ride, user friendly, cruise control is excellent, fuel efficiency is awesome and she drives on motor ways n bullys few other fast cars with super sports button.
I’m watching this. Have to say some of the things you’re not too keen on are perfect for people who have say cameras and expensive things they’d like to hide on long trips and the noises you’d maybe understand if you have kids and know things get left open, forgotten etc. Seems like a good family car so far.
… and finally on engine size - the governments are making it compulsory that engine sizes be reduced to help global warming. The the ford Kuga, Kia Sportage all of them are around the same size in the UK
I thought it was a Mazda from the thumbnail.. as others have said, it looks “inspired” from other brands. The inside looks pleasant, but that fuel economy is atrocious, my much larger station wagon gives me better than that. But at the end of the day to me MG means fun and sporty, it lets it’s heritage down. Maybe I’m being a bit old school ☺️
Not being able to change the HVAC without looking ( no manual heat/fan controls) is a deal breaker for me. So dangerous to muck around with a touch screen while driving just to change the fan/temp. Should be illegal.
Great review Paul! My sister had a look at one but just couldn't commit to buy it. China will be the next Korea. China is already making the Volvo CX range there and they are at a premium.

Looks decent, especially compared to other chinese offerings, the ZS looks pretty decent in the flesh as well, have you driven the electric version Paul? what are you thoughts on it?
I'm currently in a ZS 2020 (rental) it's nice to look at but awful to drive. You feel every imperfection on the road and the feedback noise in the cabin, once you exceed 40mph, is horrendous. I assume it's the basic trim because the interior is quite unimpressive. Another disappointing feature across the range is that regardless of the trim there are NO tinted/privacy windows and NO Android Auto just CarPlay👎 I've had the ZS for 2 weeks and I still haven't figured out how to use cruise control (no manual provided). I spoke to an MG service mechanic and he said that the ZS has the most problems EVER with at least 3-4 of them being reported daily. He warned me against buying one as they need to get China's consent before doing any major checks otherwise is will invalidate the 7 year warranty. I don't like this car, at all. I wouldn't say MG is trash just this model
I can tell you about the ZS EV. Not only it can do 0 - 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds. You can easily go fast in many situations like pulling away from traffic, accelerate from traffic lights, overtaking a slow car and more.
Excellent review! You are very thorough with what all new car buyers are looking for. Many reviews only cover 25% of what you managed to include in your exceptional review. Overall good bang for buck with a good balanced package. I will be taking one for a test drive this week. Thank you. :)
I’m surprised that neither the reviewer nor anyone in comments section mentioned that the radio is annoying. I own one and love it beside some annoying things. Radio turns on every time you start the car.
We always recommend considering resale value when it comes to new cars. They may be more affordable up front, but when it comes time to sell they may not hold their value as well as established brands.
@@CarExpertAus In the UK they will probably lose around 50% of the discounted original selling price over three years. A 5% or even 10% variation in the depreciation rate either way won't make much difference considering that the initial buying price might save thousands up front. They probably won't depreciate that much more than say a Renault around here, because the dealer is a very strong family company that retails most part exchanges itself rather than send their own brands to auction and they keep values up that way. That may not be the same everywhere.
Picked up a HS hire car today. Interesting how the shiny round vents reflect right where you look in the side mirrors. Have to use apple car play cabled but nowhere to put the phone ! Why can’t it just turn the lights off like a smart car when I get out. Oh and who wants keyless entry without keyless exit ? That is I have to get the key out to lock it as no pad on handle. Why does the radio come on every time I start the car even if it was off when I turned the car off. All this from one afternoon !! Not a fan and don’t get me started on the wipers and cruise control !!

My parents have a HS 2021 and I tested last weekend but I can say it is very annoy the slow reaction of the system, I can not change any thing without lagging 1-2 seconds for every input. When you select the temp button the screen shows 2 sec later and when you turn AC on you need to wait 2 sec or you will turn it off by accident, the same with changing fan speed other 1-2 sec to respond. I am used to turning on the AC without looking and setting the temperature and fan speed in less than 1 or 2 seconds and with this MG model u need to take eyes off the road more time than others models or park anywhere to manitulate it. Other thing is the annoyance of every time you turn on the vehicle the screen show the main menu with very furious colors and it not remember your last choice. And for me "With navigation system" is different to "with Applecar and Android Auto" when sellers say to potencial buyers because not all have a smartphones with IOS or Android up to date. NOT All HS models have navigation like the one shows here, only the fullllllllllllllly equiped. For me was a bad purchase from people who are used to fast responses from the system, and from older people who do not handle a modern cell phone well.
Thanks Paul - looks like MG are having a decent go at the mid-sized SUV segment and it appears to be good value for money - time will reveal if the in-built factory rust from Chinese metal emerges as it has done with some of the newer Chinese 4WD utes - the fuel economy is actually up around the averages for normally aspirated Subarus and would likely creep over 11 litres per 100km when all passengers are on board with luggage - nice interior and body colour - would also be interested to see the consistency of the body panel gaps - John in SA
In the not too distant future, I would expect Chinese brands to do very well. Japan post WW2, was once in this 'space'. Paul, we've also visited multiple cities in China, I also know you've been to China and seen the traffic at various cities, & 'car take-up' is huge as is the traffic which is literally 'overwhelming.' Impressed with the MG HS at this time. wonder how servicing is? [ps. No car should ever include the nomenclature with an 'H'.]
In my opinion the MG HS excite 2 Litre Turbo AWD 6 speed DC Auto is a much better MG that the one you were driving because the AWD system keeps excellent control of body roll etc. I drove the 1.5 litre FWD which was not quite as powerful and sure noticed the difference on mountain roads especially. Don't think of taking your hands off the wheel because a popup on the dash screen will beep and will tell you to take control of the vehicle therefore this car does watch the driver. Try the auto pilot which is an extra layer of safety which will follow the car in front and stop when it stops. also the lane keep assist which will nudge you straight in the lane unless you use your indicator which it makes you do when turning or changing lanes. Also try the Auto Hold which will hold the brake on for you instead of you having to keep your foot on the brake while stopped at traffic lights etc.
I would much rather drive my son's 2017 Active X Kona, 2 litre Naturally aspirated and [like Mazda] has a 6 speed torque converter trans, also the Kona has an emergency brake which is something which modern vehicles are phasing out, though I note the Kia Stonic has one.
I'm curious if Lexus will have an issue with them using the 'HS' nameplate, considering they also sold a vehicle in the 2010s named similarly-the HS250h.
In the middle east the engine is a 2.0T 225HP with a full 12inch dash screen and a dual sun roof with 18 inch wheels and is for $21k usd but I own the rx8 7seater with the same engine
Very impressive actually well screwed together with 7 year warranty, took a test drive the other day. I tried rocking the centre console, it was rock steady unlike your one. One thing I disagree with you on, It’s hardly a small car! 😂
This one seems to be a lot better specced than the equivalent you would get with mazda or toyota. Still wouldn't buy it though. Not necessarily because made in china, but don't wanna be the guinea pig to test it out first lol. If the brand stays relevant for a couple of years wouldn't mind trying it out.

I get this car as a rental often in Qld. It’s terrible. Gearbox and engine are just hopeless. I rolled backwards in drive when stopped on a steep gradient.
the ISO fix well on some child seats they connect to the car and if you push a little bar in the seat like where it folds a child seat will snap into place
Some people can look past the crap fuel economy, questionable build quality and poor resale value for the lower price. But what about parts availability and servicing and what happens if it doesn't sell in sufficient numbers they could just disappear. Is it worth the risk?

@@vinipaivas lol you joking right?
So much flex in the center console also indicates if squeaks and rattles will occur over time. If it's solid, it's more likely to hold together and last the test of time much better
The center console in his reviews of Toyotas flexes a bit but that doesn’t make them any less solid overall.

Agree
A friend of mine she has had one for 18 months
I was shocked at how good it is for the money
MG sales are quite strong in my area of Wales, helped by a keen dealer which has two depots and also a Honda franchise. Honda have lost the plot really with lacklustre designs that are too expensive for what they are and a very limited model range. The price of the MG trounces most similar cars, which is again popular for a region renowned for its parsimonious population who have short arms and very deep pockets.
My wife has one, love it, premium looks at budget price, HVAC and beeping are downfalls, rest excellent.

Further to this. All the other cars you’re comparing it to are at least in the uk £5k-£10k more in price.
… and finally on engine size - the governments are making it compulsory that engine sizes be reduced to help global warming. The the ford Kuga, Kia Sportage all of them are around the same size in the UK
It's very annoying having aircon integrated in the touch screen, it's always intuitive having aircon separate from infotainment touch screen.
The new Excite X model with AWD and 2.0T would be great Paul 👍
It’s a beast of an SUV
I thought it was a Mazda from the thumbnail.. as others have said, it looks “inspired” from other brands. The inside looks pleasant, but that fuel economy is atrocious, my much larger station wagon gives me better than that. But at the end of the day to me MG means fun and sporty, it lets it’s heritage down. Maybe I’m being a bit old school ☺️
Not being able to change the HVAC without looking ( no manual heat/fan controls) is a deal breaker for me. So dangerous to muck around with a touch screen while driving just to change the fan/temp. Should be illegal.
Not sure if you've realised but most modern cars do this now, it's for having a nicer interior overall
They have copied too much and too many..and got confused themselves somehow..

I’m surprised that neither the reviewer nor anyone in comments section mentioned that the radio is annoying. I own one and love it beside some annoying things. Radio turns on every time you start the car.
So when you add in the higher fuel consumption, likely greater depreciation and a question mark over reliability, it is probably not such great value.
We always recommend considering resale value when it comes to new cars. They may be more affordable up front, but when it comes time to sell they may not hold their value as well as established brands.
@@CarExpertAus
In the UK they will probably lose around 50% of the discounted original selling price over three years.
Well, fact is that you will lose more money on a Toyota than on this. You can’t lose more than 30k but you lose that in a Toyota after few years

@@gab4075 But Its China making Australia rich by buying Australian Resources
Buying an MG supports the Communist Party of China. People that care about their own economy buy products from people/companies/brands that are designed and/or developed and/or researched in their own country or ally country. The people that work for those local companies, in free democracies, then buy other products developed in their own country or ally country and that keeps their families and friends in work and making money. Stupid people buy direct from Chinese brands and send every single penny out of their country and destroy their own economy and eventually their entire free society because they are cretins and/or greedy and/or want things they can't afford, and rather than wait and save. They are happy to screw over their entire economy in the pursuit of self-gratification, selfishness, and ego. Buying CCP owned brands and products fuels Chinese R&D and weakens free economies. Your children and your children's children will suffer as a result of your choices. This is not hyperbole, it is fact.

I guess using cheap flimsy plastics for the console is a good way to cut down on weight and costs so the weak engine can get the car rolling

For the price, I don't know why buyers wouldn't choose Toyota, Mazda, or other well known brand.
This one seems to be a lot better specced than the equivalent you would get with mazda or toyota. Still wouldn't buy it though.
