Brilliant Direction with the improv on the Sax solo, which was flawless, and very Steve Marcus like. That Sax player was top shelf, as was the Alto who reminded me of Ritchie Cole. The entire band was perfectly able to take this chart right to the top. One seriously adept drummer, creative to say the least. Mr.Bruya kept out of the way, and led the band as needed. Simply outstanding playing by all in the band. A shame I did not find this post until Sept.2018.

OK, I actually SAW Buddy Rich and his Big Band play this song live. The Gold Standard of live Big Bands. It was their song. Watching Buddy, Steve Marcus, and the rest of the band play this song was jaw dropping. So believe me when I say, this is a great performance of this song. Great arrangement, and the band is spot on. REALLY good. I suspect Buddy would have approved with a smile. I KNOW Steve Marcus would have been thrilled with this. I hope most of these young musicians are still playing Jazz today. We need more Big Band music.

I did, too in that year. Was it at Disneyland? Friends of mine took me to see the band because I was a maniac young drummer, but hadn't ever heard Buddy, which is dumb. I was listening to Mitch Mitchell and Ginger Baker, who were great (most especially Mitch), but they were several levels below Rich. That was evident real quick.
'Godsmacked' would be a good word to describe the experience.

In 2001, I bought a '48 Slingerland kit identical to Buddy's last except a 24 instead of a 26 in. bass drum. Gigged with it in a swing 5 piece band for 3 years. Too much fun!!
