I'm super grateful for this video as I have the exact same injury but on my left side. Came here looking for reassurance that the odd sensation of vulnerability will go away one day and that's what I got. I'm 4.25 months into healing and for others who are experiencing this here is my progress so far: - First week I was just surviving, going to work in the hospital, could barely open doors but could still gingerly bend over to auscultate patients with a stethoscope - Second week I started doing long walks and went to the gym to do stairs and work lower body with minimal upper body movement - 3rd week I started using tiny dumbbells and doing single leg/single arm exercises, focusing on high reps/form/stability (this was a nice change as I had been doing powerlifting/barbell movements for years). I incorporated isometric core exercises like the McGill Big 3 (side plank, bird-dog, etc.). - As I progressed and listened to my body, I started to incorporate more dynamic core exercises. I slowly began to lift heavier dumbbells in a controlled fashion. - Eventually I began to hit the heavy bag again but I started with just straight punches, then straight punches and kicks - Around the 2 month mark I was hitting the bag pretty decently and got carried away and felt like I had aggravated my injury from throwing 80-90% intensity head-kicks. I continued to focus on core work and strength training. - At the 3 month mark I went back to jiu jitsu and just did the most basic drilling class with no sparring. Things have been going well and as of last week at around the 4 month mark I was able to deadlift 315lbs and squat 265 lb with a belt on and it didn't feel too bad but the thick, stiff belt kind of made me nervous about cracking my janky, deformed rib. It feels weird when I sit and just exist, taking deep breaths, stretching, etc., but I can drill well and generate maximal strength in a controlled fashion. I think a lot of the sensation of focal "vulnerability" that I still experience in that area comes from the tendons of my abdominal muscles flicking above and below the gnarled stump of cartilage that exists where my costochondral joint used to be, not from a weak joint (I think it's completely separated). I really crave rolling again and it sucks to see my peers speed past me, but I don't want to reinjure myself and I'm glad I was able to practice patience up until this point. With your spinal alignment tip in mind I think I will gradually return to rolling in the coming months. I hope that like OP I will also grow accustomed to my new gnarled, cartilaginous rib stump after a year.
This might be the most personally relevant video I’ve watched on the internet. This just happened to me yesterday morning and I’m experiencing everything you described word for word. Thank you for the validation and advice!
Broke some yesterday at a comp. the pain is unfathomable. Certain movement and angles on the torso just makes me want to collapse to the floor. Taking deep breaths is almost impossible. Remember guys, when people get desperate and try to pass by going aggressive with knees, KEEP YOUR ELBOWS TUCKED TO YOUR RIBS
Thank you Professor for thoroughly answering my question! I experienced basically everything you described after my “pop.” I’ve been resting it for over a month and a half now. After two weeks of excruciating pain I turned a corner. I was then able to sleep uninterrupted through the night. It is now much better. It’s been hard to stay off the mat but I will continue to rest it as you suggested. Thank you for also mentioning Master Rickson having a similar experience. I’ve been doing a lot of swimming and a little yoga (no weights) to help my healing process. I will continue to rest it as you suggested and when I train again I will definitely focus on “keeping my body in line.” That’s exactly how the injury happened. As always, thank you so much for sharing your experience. You do an awesome job!!
This was SOOO helpful. I injured my ribs last week and going crazy due to not being able to train. The Doc’s can’t tell me whats wrong after 3 X-rays and a CT but when I sleep, walk, stand for too long it hurts. I think may have torn cartilage…idk. But thanks for putting this out there, really great advise…Osu!
Could be what I have. Costrocondritis. Inflammation of the cartilage that connects to the Rib. ABSOLUTE pain ... and hurts so badly ... can't breathe at times. I take Ibuprofen to reduce the inflammation, ice on the affected areas. Hot-tub from time to time. It's much better. I can at least drill moves at the beginning of class, even if I can't spar at this point.
Thanks for all the great content. I have osteoporosis at 71 and I pulled guard and had my partner's head impact my chest. Now I know to pull the head more to under my arm. I bruised/cracked my rib cartilage. Nothing to do but heal and avoid pressure on my chest for now.
I'm a medical student and just broke a rib in my second session. Although you are mostly right and I love the video, the sternum is in fact bone and has 'joints' called the sternocostals connecting to the ribs. Unfortunately theres nothing to do about a broken rib other than rest, and if it is misplaced I do suggest you see a doctor to check if it will heal properly. Keep the videos coming this channel has been awesome
@@vinchenta3325 hello. I assume you want update of my rib injury from 2 years ago. it took about 6 months to recover. However till date, it still feel tightness at the side of my ribs.
In my second training session ever, I injured my ribs while rolling with someone about 60 pounds heavier than me. Nothing popped or shifted, but my ribs were definitely in pain. I tapped just from him ending up in mount because the pressure from his thighs on my ribs was too much. I think I either bruised or cracked a rib. Unsure. Being off the mats this soon really makes me feel defeated.
Hope you got back into training, try and avoid rolling with the big bois. I just got back into training earlier this week after a couple of years off, first session with full on sparring and a stronger, heavier dude with no chill slams his knee down onto my ribs. Went to the ER a couple of days later and been told I have a slight collapsed lung and probably some broken ribs. I'm definitely going to avoid training with that guy again when I finally get back to it, it might seem rude but you don't need to get yourself injured just to be polite.
At my 1st Bjj class ever, a guy (purple belt, he should've known better) did a knee on belly on me. Popped my rib. I was out for 6 weeks. And yeah, it was demoralizing. Fast forward 3.5 years, and a guy last night got up & under my floating rib. I don't think I popped it, but its hella sore today. Good times. Woo hoo.
just had this happen monday. it sucks because im only a few weeks into the school and was loving it. i cant justify paying for the school in the mean time waiting to come back. maybe i will revisit the sport in the future.
My rib injury was from a punch--body shot on the left side. I agree; rest is important no matter how much I wanted to train. Also, ibuprofen helped with pain, swelling, and fever symptoms, and laying on an ice pack helped a lot too.
Thank you for posting this video. I had this exact thing happen to me a few months ago where my rib popped and it was very painful and I had to take about a month off the matts
Popped my rib 6 months into training, right before i got my first stripe. Lol rested for a good 5 months, and I’m ready to head back to the mats. Thanks for the advice. 👍🏼
Wear a chest protector like they use in Taekwondo. As a law enforcement officer, I wear a ballistic vest, so training with a TKD protector feels similar but lighter. It helps tremendously. I started wearing the protective vest after a rib injury from training. It took a very long time to heal. With the chest protector, I don't hurt.
Yup this type of injury took me out of Jiu-Jitsu for a very long time. I was able to snap my rib as loud as my thumb snap or louder. I went to the Dr. and he said I had a 50/50 chance of surgery to be a success. I was a broke college student at that time with 2x anticipated Jiu-Jitsu super fights set up for that year. I had to retire due to the severity of the injury. I'm back on the mat now (10 years later) it still clicks but not as severe and the pain is tolerable.
I’m an old ass amateur boxer. When I was in the early stages of my career I sparred a guy and busted his nose then felt sorry for him. Started letting off the gas. Allowing him to pressure me because I didn’t want to beat on him any more. (Learned a valuable lesson) he puts the pressure on me landing body shots. After the round I get out of the ring and hear a few “pops” when I rocked forward while walking . So now I’m rocking back and forth and its popping in and out!! my coach thinking I’m lying, I put his hand on my rib and let him feel it.. he tried to lie it off like I’m okay but I could see the panic in his eyes. I Said all this to say I got the same injury from boxing and I was a dumb ass and didn’t sit out to rest I went to do strenuous warehouse work every day after this; therefore, my rib popped in an out of the rehabilitation position so much. So my Lump from the injury is there one year later. Good to hear it from an older man with life experiences and the knowledge instead of some inexperienced doctor feeding me power point data
I had the luck of getting the rib back into its position, I could feel it was displaced but ,as soon as they applied pressure it went back into place , now I'm getting to know thanks to your video ! Thanks 😊
The prices we pay for our love of the martial arts :-) I'm not going to list mine, but it includes broken ribs. Talk to any long time martial artist, and they can give you an injury recital. Much respect, Brian.
I've had both types. He's right, it's the torsional movement that sets this up. Rib came popping back out once a day for 2 weeks, then it started healing. After 2 months I started easy rolling again. After 3 months it's sometimes aching but not hurting anymore. Got a lump on my chest now but no problem. I would say this injury is way less problematic than say a torn ACL or any other knee injury for that matter. It just sucks if it keeps coming out.
Thank you so much for your input. I had a rib separation today while grappling. Same exact experience. Felt a pop hurt for a minute then went back to complete the round. Of course it poped again! I called it quits after that. I've been super concerned all night about it. But your insight really educated me on what happened. Your the man!
Thank you for the info Professor. Had this rib injury training in Judo on the 2nd day after long lay off from MA. Recovered after 3 weeks rest and went back for training. Hurt it again doing the Judo ground work. Your advice was timely.
A lot of truth and good advice here. From personal experience, I fully agree. OUCH!!!! I still have scar over my ribs poking some. It took me 3-4 months to feel strong. Look up intercostal rehabilitation if you want some exercises, also active breathing helps strengthen the rib muscles.
I think your advise to line up the shoulders, hips, and knees is golden. This week, my rib popped when I was fighting a guard pass. My shoulders were more/less flat on the ground, my hips were not lined up at all, I'm 37, and the flexing of my abs to lift my legs to regain guard popped my rib cartilage where it connects to my abs. I just have to retrain that part of me that still thinks I'm a high school wrestler to be more careful. Hopefully some ice and rest will get me back on the mats asap! Thanks for the useful video, Ryan.
Thank you for this thorough explanation, I recently got some chiropractic adjustments and I believe they damaged my right lower rib with that hard twisting motion they do. Which toes into the explanation of separating your lower half with your upper half. Its just not meant to do that. I felt a hard pull from my mid back to my lower abdomen. Was fine for 2 days, and should have rested it, then on the third day I woke up with excruciating pain on my abdomen area. I likely strained or dislocated a rib. Going on 1 month with the pain, and it has gone down, but it's without a doubt excruciating for the first week or two.
Yeah, sounds like you popped a rib. Thankfully, the one and only time that happened to me (Ryan), my doc gave me a Toradol shot and that enabled me to sleep for a week. Got another shot after a week, and that’s all I needed. After that, it was still sore, but i could sleep comfortably without painkillers.
I needed this one! I don't think it's "injury" status yet... But every time I do jiu jitsu my ribs feel really sore! I've been doing jiu jitsu for about 10nweeks and had to learn quick I shouldn't go more than 3 times a week for now even though I really want to. (I'm 37)
Thank you so much, you are so right that the doctor doesn’t really give you good info if you haven’t actually broken the rib. Your insight into different kinds of rib injuries targeted exactly what my fall resulted in and now I know it’s not an easy fix and not push myself. Fell hard down the stairs and landed with all my weight on back rib on stair corner and elbow. Definitely a popped rib as you described, only been 3 wks now so have a way to go still in healing. Thank you again.
On my second rib cartilage tear/pull and new to Jiu-Jitsu. I throttled through the first one as it was more lateral, heavily guarded it while training, and got through it after about two weeks. Then last Saturday while rolling I had the opposite side pop and it's more midline towards my sternum. I HATE not being able to train as this sport is awesome and very applicable to my career in LE, but I'm afraid I may have to sit out for a bit and allow it to heal. I'll know more after tonight's training. Great video and thank you for taking the time to make it.
Wow I would be scared to go back until my injury fully heals since I don't want to get it re-injured and needing to wait even longer. Hope you're fully healed by now
My training partner kneeled on my chest and my rib went 'pop'. A week later it's feeling much better, thankfully. Still hurts a bit so I'm staying off the mat a while longer. I don't want to risk a worse injury. Next time I will do more to protect my ribs during rolling. Thanks for the advice.
Out with an intercostal rib sprain right now. White belt and have been training for 4 months. Third injury already. Too much rolling and I’m late 40’s.
I'm out with the same injury right now, I'm a white belt and have also been training for a little over 4 months. I'm super sad I'm having to sit out. What did you do to help this injury recover and how long did it take for it to fully heal? I got this injury last Saturday and I'm just wondering when the achiness will calm and what the recovery time is and I'm also looking for some advice on how to rehab it.
i watch alot of ufc fights and i remember Pettis tapping out to hurt rib vs Poirer and recently Wodley tapped due to hurt rib vs covington. looks hella painful.
I think it's called scorpion rib crush, someone did it to me in sparring, and last two weeks I have the pain. The way pain comes and goes seems like muscle pain.
yeah i broke one rib and it healed by itself but with a calous over it. I think i did a muscle tear on my rib a week ago, and it hurts to cough, and sneeze as you said. I just ask my training partners to avoid cross-side. thanks for the super helpful heads up about the not twisting the body. 5 stars
I just rolled a rib getting stacked from a guard pass. The pressure went to it in a way the rib just rolled over itself. Be careful of getting stacked as well! That one is dangerous also
@@mattburns545 About a month! I took a full break for about 4 weeks then started back just techniques for two weeks. So, I was back to live rolling in about 6 weeks I'd say. I also did a round of BP-157 peptide injections that helped immensely. Not to mention being careful of it during workouts and such and not pushing it too hard. I also did turmeric pills and other anti-inflammatory protocols to aid in the recovery.
Mine popped out when I was doing a hip bump sweep on somebody in closed guard. I sat up to bump them over and Pop and then it went back into place. Unfortunately I have popped out and in 7 times in a week. Rib band has helped but man the ability to not do simple things is even more frustrating than not doing Jiu-Jitsu. Thanks for the advice.
I'm in the process of rehabbing my second rib injury. The first was in my back, my doctor said it was twisted? Whatever that means. This one is the same injury in the same spot as Professor Young. Same doctor told me I was putting too much torque on my ribs when rolling, duh. My P to T ratio is still heavily weighted toward the P.
A rib injury from down pressure was the only thing that has taken me off the mat for more than a few days. Nothing, malicious, I was just training that day's technique with a larger guy. Trying to get back on the mat too soon after injuring my ribs took me off the mat even longer. And as Professor Young mentioned, this is just the worst injury. Sneezing, coughing, laughing, pooping, trying to lay down in bed, sit up in bed... literally everything you do hurts when your ribs are jacked. I also hurt my ribs a long time ago playing soccer. The doctor said that my ribs weren't broken but either bruised or cracked, and that either way, the only cure was time. Then he asked if I was very active, to which I replied "Not so much." and he said "Good, because you aren't going to be able to do anything for about five weeks." :)~
You're right, had a rib break, as a 6 month white belt, and I didn't realise it because it didn't hurt too bad. Had partner in a triangle and his elbow was dug into my rib. I didn't know well enough to straighten and pull his arm over, just pulled his head down. Felt a searing pain in my rib. Weeks later a knot developed over the spot, went to the doc and she said it was calcification. So now I have a lump under the skin of my chest. But I got the tap 😂
Thabk you for sharing your experience! 🙏🏼 A popped rib can be reset to line back up with the cartilage. If you do not get it set before it heals, it is very difficult to correct. A good osteopath or chiropractor should be able to help with that.
@@KamaJiuJitsu I personally would wait a few days until the muscles relax a little. Too much muscular resistance and guarding will prevent a chiropractor from being able to make the adjustment. Also, a forceful adjustment is there is any tear in the muscles may make the tear worse. When my rib dislocated from the cartilage after receiving a punch, I spend a couple of days massaging the abdominal muscles and intercostals (gently), then when movement was less painful I would press the protrusion to hold it down and do thoracic mobilization exercises. I also pulled a band apart overhead (like a bar snatch) and did deep breathing. After about 3 days it had settled enough that I would feel it moving just pressing it and moving my torso. Doing this while avoiding painful ranges for a couple more days made the protrusion get smaller and smaller until the pain was gone and the feeling of movement in the rib was gone. This was different than an abrupt chiropractic adjustment to force in back in line, but worked quite well. I have a background in manual therapy and movement training, so this isn't something most people will be able to do alone and unguided. It also took me 3+ hours per day of working with it, so it's a bit of an unrealistic solution to offer as a recommendation to others. I really appreciated hearing your story and found your telling of your personal experience with the injury very insightful. Thanks again for sharing! 🙇♂️
Went to my first BJJ class - got crack in my rib during rolling. Waiting out the injury to heal, and will then try BJJ again. If I then get injured again, then I am not sure if BJJ is for me.
@@KamaJiuJitsu I'll have to check it out. The worst is not being able to train, but I know if I hit the mat, I'm going to re-injure and will be out for even longer time. Just one of those things!
Hi Ryan - thanks man... do you have any advice for a 52year old beginner who is plagued with low back pain. I've been out for over a month now... I'm effectively not training at all, which I'm not happy about. i can have months with no issue until I lean over for absolutely no reason it would 'nip' then for the rest of the day and maybe even the rest of the week I can't do anything. My last class we did takedowns and that was the worst one... I was having to walk with a stick after that! I'm not training except for my morning exercise now. Cheers, Doug
............you read my mind , I was just complaining about my rib , and here you are with a video lol, I’m a white belt have been doing jiu jitsu for 5 months , I’m training for competition , currently training 5x a week . I do have a question though , do you have a taper off period the week of a competition to allow for rest
Thanks for the video, Ryan. I checked it out because I had a pain on my side and top ribs, and my back. But, it wasn't anything bone related. I just had ache on them. But still, I wanted to look at this video just in case. Like you said, if it didn't happen to me, I need to count my blessings if I'm not careful with myself. So with bridge escapes or sweeps that involve hugging the person and rolling one side to another (like how to escape headlocks), is that something I need to be careful since that involves twisting your spine much of the time especially with a heavy person on top of me?
I just started BJJ and hurt my rib in my 4th workout, doesn't feel quite broke , maybe bruised/ separated but I went and worked out today and its like 300% worse now, I can barely stand .. and now I may have to take 3 months off!? feeling really bummed right now.
Mine popped out today but I think I got lucky. It went back into place about four hours later. I popped it out again went I doubled over to put on some socks but it seems like I can push it back in. I was twisting and crunching to to fight off hooks went my partner had my back when it happened so you are 100% on the money with how it happens. Going to take at least two weeks off, maybe a month. I'm 55 so I can't afford to aggravate injuries. Mine is nowhere near the pain level you describe so I am counting my blessings. I think yoga twists would be a good exercise and if you practice you can recover range of motion. I have noticed I don't have the flexibility I used to but I think it can be recovered. I don't do the yoga I used to. We also do have two big strong white belts with rib injuries. They think it was pressure but you may be right in suggesting it was them getting twisted up.
Rib injuries are the weirdest things you could have. I had the same thing where it was popping out but only if I moved a certain way or used a certain muscles. It was super frustrating because I would forget and then I would go to close a sliding door or push off something with my left hand then it would pop out again. Felt Like a knife going into my side every time. I'm on my third week of no training and I'm getting antsy for the first time since! This sucks!
@@KamaJiuJitsu Thanks for the response and the recommendation! If it's not good to go in another week or two I'm going to talk to my doctor about it. It's really annoying because it happened during a half-guard sweep drill not even during a roll! Just missed a competition this Saturday because of it.
oh, no. i'm not saying take the toradol and go back to training. take it so the pain goes away. but don't go back and train for at least a month. unless you like rib pain...
Mines doing that but lower than sternum… feel two pops. Wrap with ace bandage helps a lot but what did you do after all of that? Did it ever heal or still pop and give you problems?
@@jared.campbell Yes, it completely healed after about a month and no other problems from THAT rib. Since then I have had two different slighter pulls, but they also healed quicker. I try not to play guard or force sweeps with bigger opponents also started a core strengthening program since the last injury. It seems to work as before I was playing guard all the time but not exercising my core in between classes. Hang in there man, I know it feels like you're screwed right now but it will heal up. Just make sure you don't rush back in. Give it plenty of time to heal up and you'll be good as new.
My rib is jacked rn I’m in pain. I tried to throw up an arm bar last night from guard and this 220 pound white belt stacked me so hard I felt it like dislocate or pop and I’ve been in pain
separated few months ago on my right side. 2 months of rest. separated two weeks ago on my LEFT side....tried to roll after 10 days - no way...popped out again. gotta have some time off the mats and do some cardio and some CORE training imho
Ive gotten my rib popped back in by a chiropractor before. It popped out in the front and they popped it back in but when i started training again it went back out of place
Once it pops out on the front, I’m pretty sure it ain’t gonna pop back in. Think of tearing a piece of cloth in two. You can line them back up next to each other, but it ain’t going back together without help.
sounds like my injury, when i got injured i felt my rib pop and it went under the cartilage,i could feel it snap back, to my surprise after two weeks the pain is almost gone, but hearing stuff like this makes me worry a lot, am i more susceptible to rib injuries now?
@@motazsouid249 after it healed mine no longer hurt it just sticks out and is a bit annoying. When it popped back out after the chiro popped it in it didnt hurt it just started sticking out again. So i wouldnt worry about further injuries just make sure to give it ample time to heal i waited about a month before i started rolling again
I was slowly getting ready to start BJJ again after a 5year layoff. I was rolling drills with my brother in-law once a week and hurt my ribs almost 2 weeks ago. Had x-rays an no breaks to be seen. But I have a lot of pain in multiple muscles in my ribs and stomach. It sucks, a sneeze 3 days ago set me back pulling some of them and then something jerked while I was just laying in bed. Finally biting the bullet and getting a muscle relaxer prescription. Drinking over a gallon of water a day and cycling ice/heat every couple of hours. I would be more bummed if the virus hadn't hit but it still sucks that I'm going to not be able to even exercise for at least another couple weeks. I had just got to the point where I wouldn't gas out in 3 minutes. I was on my back with full guard, he was working passing and had his forearm across my mid section with all of his weight while I'm pulling his head down and trying to control his other arm. I felt great and was even thinking that I was happy that my stomach was strong enough and then I heard a pop...
I commented a couple years ago about my back rib that pulled out of place. Well here I am looking up videos this time it's exactly what you did to the front rib and its sticking out. Did you try to have it put back in place? Also I'm 43 so I'm guess at least a couple months out. Thoughts?
Unfortunately, since my rib separation was not in a “joint,” there was no socket to pop it back into. The cartilage simply grew to “reach out to and grab” the end of the rib. So, i still have the original separation, but cartilage has grown to reattach my rib, so to speak. Hence, the bulge of my rib on my chest. Otherwise, feels the same as it did pre-injury.
@@KamaJiuJitsu Thanks for the reply. Ok sounds like it healed up so that's good news. My back rib healed up and hasn't come back out in 2 years so I hope this will do the same. 🦴
Second time watching this. I had a bad costochondral separation 9 months ago when I scissored, but got pinned. Just popped my rib on the other side this morning doing a clock choke on soneone. As I applied weight and walked my legs round, my ribs popped and moved over each other. No way as bad as my last injury, but wondering if I have a weakness now. Thanks for the info.
I had this exact same thing happen and I haven’t trained since then bc I’m scared lol 😂 It’s been 2 months And I still have pain from time to time more like a muscular pain now unless I lay on it
Is this why you see people wrap their ribs to compress them after an injury. So when the cartledge forms, it forms over a rib that is not sticking out? Just wondering....
How do you deal with hurt fingers? It's mainly my middle finger and ring finger on both hands probably caused by gripping. I take them from time to time but was wondering if there was anything else I could do. Maybe there's a better way of taping them I don't know.
Got slammed. If I move almost at all it feels like my two ribs pop out of place. But feels too close to anterior medial to where bone meets cartilage ( just below sternum level). Possible to break this Cartilage? And if so what’s treatment? Same thing?
I THINK, it’s the 4th one up from the bottom on my right side. And yes, it separated from the 3rd and 5th ribs. It still juts out, even though it’s fully healed.
I got a rib injury a month after this video came out. 3 days later it felt better, so I trained. Huge mistake. I made it a lot worse, so I took two weeks off. Felt good, tiny bit of pain, but it was nothing. So guess what--I trained again yesterday. Today I'm sitting at the computer with an ice pack to my ribs. I'm taking 3 weeks off or whatever it takes this time for it to completely go away. Maybe I'll even take an extra week after that. I can't deal with not being able to train or just going to class and watching from the bench.
@@KamaJiuJitsu I was just thinking that this morning! It's soooo hard to stay off the mats. My doctor said this will only take 3-6 weeks to heal, but I'm gonna play it safe. I'm going to be in SoCal in December--do you guys have drop-ins at the Irvine location?
What if you feel a pop, and hear it too? It hurt really bad!! So now I’ve experienced days of terrible discomfort, & days that are bearable....but it continues after 2 weeks. Help!
Torn intercostal muscle and fractured rib Cartlidge... 9 weeks later I can finally move again pretty good, but knee on belly or any constant top pressure results in a quick tap from me. For the first 6 weeks, EVERYTHING hurt, sneezing, coughing, driving, sitting, sleeping, playing snakes and ladders... EVERYTHING.
I popped my rib 2 weeks ago, while defending an armbar, totally twisted my body, really powering out when pop, the most excruciating pain, it was so bad that I was actually dry heaving with pain which didnt help... I've only been doing BJJ for a year and a half, started at age 45. Now I'm out for 3 to 6 months?? Damn...so when can I start training again? What can I do? I dont want to interfere with healing either...
I'm here because yesterday's pain was too much. I thought I was having a heart attack. The day before yesterday, I was moving heavy boxes 📦 (a lot of twisting). I remember feeling a pain in my mid back that would shock me to my tricep near my elbow. I figured something was tight but I didn't take it serious. And now, I'm on bed rest. 🛌🏾... I gotta get my 33yr old ass in shape 😩
Thanks for the video. Had this happen to me last week Monday. Immediately got off mat. First night was REALLY rough. Much better now, I may be back on the mat in a week or so. Question: Do you recommend adding yoga to your routine. I know Rickson does that but I'd love to know your feelings about it. Thanks for the videos.

@@KamaJiuJitsu thanks for the video. I was on my back with partner trying to take mount when I was injured. It was an accident of course, but he is a much bigger guy. It was painful enough that although I am really interested in learning and mastering this, I considered rather or not I should continue. I have a full time career, one I rather enjoy. I can’t show up to work busted up like the movie fight club. Now that the pain has subsided I’ve decided to continue. I may just establish my own limitations on training. You are exactly right about training. I’m being instructed to take certain positions without any clue on how to do it or defend it. I’m just a training dummy at this point.
You might wanna consider switching to another school that takes trying to protect newbies from “learning injuries” seriously. Of course, there are unavoidable “freak” accidents, and if you think what happened to you was such, then by all means, chalk it up to that and go back. But if you feel otherwise...
I just had a Costachondral Separation wherein the rib cartilage separates from the bone. Very painful. Had a blue belt in my side control and he went to pass by placing his elbow right on my rightside chest and applied all his weight and strength.... Crack! It was a very loud sound that made us both stop and me wither in pain. I caught my breath for 10 secs and kept rolling. That was 5 days ago; I can barely move now. So frustrating. I'm a new white belt, I don't know what I don't know, but seems to me like digging your elbow into someones ribs with all your might isn't exactly what you should be doing with a training partner. I don't wish this pain on anyone. To add insult to injury it has seemed to knock the backside of the rib somewhat out of place because I have equal amount of pain radiating from the back at the same time as my front side. Chiro is saying at least 6 weeks... We'll see. 🤞🏼
I wish i was smart enough to stop. I was almost out of the woods, pain almost gone, and training partner kicked right on the injured rib. Another 3 weeks of sleepless nights for me.
I'm super grateful for this video as I have the exact same injury but on my left side. Came here looking for reassurance that the odd sensation of vulnerability will go away one day and that's what I got.
I'm 4.25 months into healing and for others who are experiencing this here is my progress so far:
- First week I was just surviving, going to work in the hospital, could barely open doors but could still gingerly bend over to auscultate patients with a stethoscope
- Second week I started doing long walks and went to the gym to do stairs and work lower body with minimal upper body movement
- 3rd week I started using tiny dumbbells and doing single leg/single arm exercises, focusing on high reps/form/stability (this was a nice change as I had been doing powerlifting/barbell movements for years). I incorporated isometric core exercises like the McGill Big 3 (side plank, bird-dog, etc.).
- As I progressed and listened to my body, I started to incorporate more dynamic core exercises. I slowly began to lift heavier dumbbells in a controlled fashion.
- Eventually I began to hit the heavy bag again but I started with just straight punches, then straight punches and kicks
- Around the 2 month mark I was hitting the bag pretty decently and got carried away and felt like I had aggravated my injury from throwing 80-90% intensity head-kicks.
I appreciate your story. And glad to hear you’re on the mend.
Super helpful comment for me. Currently in pain searching everything I can on this injury as it happened yesterday morning while rolling. Thanks!
This might be the most personally relevant video I’ve watched on the internet. This just happened to me yesterday morning and I’m experiencing everything you described word for word. Thank you for the validation and advice!
Glad it helped! Heal up and get back at it!
Broke some yesterday at a comp. the pain is unfathomable. Certain movement and angles on the torso just makes me want to collapse to the floor. Taking deep breaths is almost impossible.
Remember guys, when people get desperate and try to pass by going aggressive with knees, KEEP
YOUR ELBOWS TUCKED TO YOUR RIBS
You do an awesome job!!
my pleasure.
"Keeping the body in line... " OMG experienced it today , hope it doesn't take so much time ...🫣
This was SOOO helpful.
Iv had the injury. I have the protruding rib. You need to strengthen your core so it doesn’t happen again.
did it happen to you again? it seems to be a reoccuring thing for some people
I'm a medical student and just broke a rib in my second session.

I was just rolling 8 hours ago. I heard a pop sound when I was being twisted. Now I’m feeling sore/ache at the rib area. Muscle strain?
@@ojaglee update?
@@vinchenta3325 hello. I assume you want update of my rib injury from 2 years ago. it took about 6 months to recover. However till date, it still feel tightness at the side of my ribs.
@@ojaglee that's substantial. Did you take time off the mats?
In my second training session ever, I injured my ribs while rolling with someone about 60 pounds heavier than me. Nothing popped or shifted, but my ribs were definitely in pain. I tapped just from him ending up in mount because the pressure from his thighs on my ribs was too much. I think I either bruised or cracked a rib. Unsure. Being off the mats this soon really makes me feel defeated.
The exact thing just happened to me just now. How are you doing?
Hope you got back into training, try and avoid rolling with the big bois.
I just got back into training earlier this week after a couple of years off, first session with full on sparring and a stronger, heavier dude with no chill slams his knee down onto my ribs. Went to the ER a couple of days later and been told I have a slight collapsed lung and probably some broken ribs. I'm definitely going to avoid training with that guy again when I finally get back to it, it might seem rude but you don't need to get yourself injured just to be polite.
This just happened to me too.
Similar with me, rolling with a guy much heavier. I just started lifting weight again after 3 months. Still hurts like hell the day after lifting.
Dit Da Jow!!!! Helped me a lot for my rib injury.
Today during the training my rip poped. Happy I found this video. Now I’m much calmer.
Thank you Professor! I felt immediately reassured listening to you rather than giving in to panic.
You’ll be fine, although you found out how painful that injury is. Just be sure to rest and not rush back so you can heal.
Third time getting injured and sidelined for weeks/months. Thanks for covering this
Yup this type of injury took me out of Jiu-Jitsu for a very long time.
Did you have surgery?
@@krisztianwirsz3612 no I took a long break.

Is the lump permanent?
In my case, it's almost gone. Good luck!@@omarhosni4107
I had a rib pop out 2 months after starting jiu jitsu. Had to sit out for two more months until it was healed. Not fun time
:'(
just had it tonight brow... do not know what i am gonna do the next weeks/months...
Berning Sandwiches oh man, hope that didn’t “turn you off” to rolling and being able to enjoy BJJ :/
I really wish this video had come out a month ago. Thanks for always putting out great content.

Very helpful video, thank you for posting it.
Thank you so much for your input. I had a rib separation today while grappling. Same exact experience. Felt a pop hurt for a minute then went back to complete the round. Of course it poped again! I called it quits after that. I've been super concerned all night about it. But your insight really educated me on what happened. Your the man!
Toradol will let you sleep.
Thank you for the info Professor. Had this rib injury training in Judo on the 2nd day after long lay off from MA. Recovered after 3 weeks rest and went back for training. Hurt it again doing the Judo ground work. Your advice was timely.
I Popped mine two days ago. Thank you for the enlightenment!
What about just general joint pain? Knees, elbows stuff like that
A lot of truth and good advice here. From personal experience, I fully agree. OUCH!!!! I still have scar over my ribs poking some. It took me 3-4 months to feel strong. Look up intercostal rehabilitation if you want some exercises, also active breathing helps strengthen the rib muscles.
Is the protrusion permanent?
I think your advise to line up the shoulders, hips, and knees is golden. This week, my rib popped when I was fighting a guard pass. My shoulders were more/less flat on the ground, my hips were not lined up at all, I'm 37, and the flexing of my abs to lift my legs to regain guard popped my rib cartilage where it connects to my abs. I just have to retrain that part of me that still thinks I'm a high school wrestler to be more careful. Hopefully some ice and rest will get me back on the mats asap! Thanks for the useful video, Ryan.
Oh, man. I’m sorry! I hope you’re sleeping ok (I know you’re likely terrified to sneeze, though).
Wow! That WAS bad!
I hope you’re doing much better now, three weeks out.
Yes, rest.
Jiu-Jitsu will ALWAYS be there when you get back.
Hope you're fully healed by now
@@nomealow eventually everything loosened up, then tore groin muscle from bone. Good times in the world of BJJ....lol
I like how you said "for those who haven't had this injury 'yet'" haha. Just popped mine last night and I'm so bummed about taking tine off the mat...
Thank you for all the info.
That one is dangerous also
That just happened to me tonight, how fast were you feeling good enough to roll again?
@@mattburns545 About a month! I took a full break for about 4 weeks then started back just techniques for two weeks. So, I was back to live rolling in about 6 weeks I'd say.
I also did a round of BP-157 peptide injections that helped immensely. Not to mention being careful of it during workouts and such and not pushing it too hard. I also did turmeric pills and other anti-inflammatory protocols to aid in the recovery.
Same just happened to me last night, still in bad pain
@@Seaneskatejitsu Dude I feel ya, it’s rough. Hang in there bro!
Had a rib pop from the back a couple of times; not fun, but sounds a bit better than having it pop from the front
Going thru thus right now. Been almost a week, Keeps popping
, going to orthopedic Thursday, I hope to start this healing soon.

Kama Jiu-Jitsu glad u sought help right away. I feel mine slipping often just wanna roll again lol.
Seems this is a very common injury in bjj. Happened to me on my second day of training. Been healing for 5 weeks now. Still hurts.
Just happened to me, second class in. How long till you could roll again?
I have the worst one… no Problem I have pain here and there. Carefull in competitiona nd hard Sparring.
That last line 💀First thing I thought of was a tattoo saying "But I got the tap" right below the bump
Thabk you for sharing your experience! 🙏🏼 A popped rib can be reset to line back up with the cartilage. If you do not get it set before it heals, it is very difficult to correct. A good osteopath or chiropractor should be able to help with that.
I had a great chiropractor who trains with us come see me at the studio within 30 min of my injury.
No dice for me, sadly.

If your ribs hurt, don’t train, let alone compete.
This sucks!

Yes, it completely healed after about a month and no other problems from THAT rib.

Once it pops out on the front, I’m pretty sure it ain’t gonna pop back in. Think of tearing a piece of cloth in two. You can line them back up next to each other, but it ain’t going back together without help.

@@KamaJiuJitsu
Thanks for the reply.
🤔
That’s a new one for me...
I learn something every day!
Can you recommend any academies in Austin Texas that align themselves with Gracie/self defense Jiu-Jitsu? Much appreciated!✊🏽
Kama Jiu-Jitsu Austin is targeted for October 1! Make a note to yourself, and check back with us then!
Kama Jiu-Jitsu Awesome! Thank you for letting me know. Peace, and good luck with the opening.
I think this happened to me today, I felt a pop in the front of my chest
I had this exact same thing happen and I haven’t trained since then bc I’m scared lol 😂
It’s been 2 months
And I still have pain from time to time more like a muscular pain now unless I lay on it
Sounds about right.
Im 52 and in my second week of this injury its horrible cant train cant cough sneeze just trying to take deep breaths every hour
Not telling you to do this, but I had two Toradol shots in the early phases after the injury.
I just got rib trauma from bjj...torn cartilage on the upper left rib
Ouch.
I'm not even one month In bjj and I already have rib pain. Its unbearable at times
Mines popped 3 days ago...
Repopped 20 min ago on a sneeze..
Oh man..
Ouch!
Is this why you see people wrap their ribs to compress them after an injury. So when the cartledge forms, it forms over a rib that is not sticking out? Just wondering....
Maybe. I really don’t know.
The risk to wrapping your ribs is a collapsed lung. I have the same rib injury, and the Dr. warned me not to wrap.
I didn’t wrap mine, either.
I tried wrapping mine, but the pain was too much to handle. Couldnt breathe properly.
And here I am, one year later, rewatching this video because of another rib injury, suck!!
How do you deal with hurt fingers? It's mainly my middle finger and ring finger on both hands probably caused by gripping. I take them from time to time but was wondering if there was anything else I could do. Maybe there's a better way of taping them I don't know.
It’s your style of play. Too much hard gripping. Need to stop that. Your hands will heal on their own.
Check this out: www.bjjee.com/articles/keenan-cornelius-my-fingers-are-so-damaged-from-bjj-that-i-cant-make-a-closed-fist-anymore/
Mix in no gi training to give your fingers a rest, and make you work on alternate styles of "grips" that don't stress your fingers so much.
I train 9 mos straight with the gi on, and at the end of the 9 mos, no finger issues.
Like I said, change your style of training.
Got slammed. If I move almost at all it feels like my two ribs pop out of place. But feels too close to anterior medial to where bone meets cartilage ( just below sternum level). Possible to break this Cartilage? And if so what’s treatment? Same thing?
Yep. I broke my cartilage at my sternum. Really can’t do anything. It’ll heal on its own with time and rest.
I've had two pop out. One on each side. I have matching lumps now...lol More cracked or almost separated ribs than I can count.
man, Jack, that SUCKS!
Thank you for the information. Do comments like "Thank you for the information" alone help you in the algorithm?
i'm not sure. but we sure to appreciate them!
thank you!
Which rib was it you popped boss, 10th? Did it fully separate from the cartlige of the rib above?
I THINK, it’s the 4th one up from the bottom on my right side. And yes, it separated from the 3rd and 5th ribs. It still juts out, even though it’s fully healed.
@@KamaJiuJitsu could we see it? 🫠
🤔
I might be able to accommodate your request.
How much you willing to pay, huh handsome? 😂 😂
@@KamaJiuJitsu you could do it for the views bro! No homo either!
😂 😂 😂
Thank you! This is the EXACT injury I just got and been looking for a solution. So this is permanent? :'(
If it pops out and is protruding, it’ll heal, but it won’t go back where it originally was.
@@KamaJiuJitsu Thanks for the insight again professor.
😂 I TOLD you!
Take 3 MONTHS off this time. You’ll thank me later.
We do. Please swing by. Contact us first at KamaJiuJitsu@gmail.com for the Irvine schedule when you come.
Kama Jiu-Jitsu I will email a few weeks in advance! Hoping my rib is good by then.
What if you feel a pop, and hear it too? It hurt really bad!! So now I’ve experienced days of terrible discomfort, & days that are bearable....but it continues after 2 weeks. Help!
Mine continued for months.
Yeah, no training for a while. And let this be a lesson to you; when you’re caught, you’re caught.
Not telling you to do the same, but i got a Toradol shot. Helped me sleep for the first week.
Yoga is great. I did it for a couple years before classes. Time constraints prevent that for me these days.
@@KamaJiuJitsu Would love to hear about how yoga helped your Jiu Jitsu and why before class instead of after. Thanks
I did hot power yoga. I was so drained in KJJ class, I was like a noodle. Forced me to go “pure technique” in order to survive. Great stuff!
UNKO RYAN- bunch of us local boys get gout. Hate it. it always seems to happen when training for tournament and we watch what we eat. WTF????
🤔 how you get gout?
Have you had your uric acid levels tested? Try eliminating/reducing purine foods in your diet. See if it helps. Here is a list of high/moderate purine foods: www.arthritis.org/living-with-arthritis/tools-resources/expert-q-a/gout-questions/food-for-gout.php
So basically, do a low-inflammation diet, like a carnivore/ketogenic diet rich in beef.
3rd day on the mat in popped my rib.
We’re you rolling?
@@KamaJiuJitsu started on our knees fighting to get mount.
ruclips.net/video/AAv4oE-G2hs/видео.html

Whoa, what am I doing here?! - Rusty
We'll see. 🤞🏼
More like 6 mos.
that was a dick move by your training partner, I’m thinking.
I wish i was smart enough to stop. I was almost out of the woods, pain almost gone, and training partner kicked right on the injured rib. Another 3 weeks of sleepless nights for me.
did it happend to you again after you fully recovered??
@@motazsouid249 nope, still sore every now and again when I'm getting good pressure.
