  • Tesla has cut its prices in a number of markets - including the US, China, and Germany - as the electric car giant faces falling sales.
A price war has been intensifying between electric vehicle (EV) makers, with particularly fierce competition coming from Chinese firms.
And Tesla - run by multi-billionaire Elon Musk - reported a sharp fall in global vehicle deliveries in early 2024, and has been forced to recall thousands of its new Cybertruck over safety concerns.
Last week, Tesla also announced plans to lay off more than 10% of its global workforce.

Hybrids like CFL lamps are a stopgap technology, they serve a purpose but will be made obsolete within at most two decades. I doubt "Toyota will go the way of the Dodo" no least due to their size and reach. Also good for them on capitalising on the hybrid market, I recall when they were derided for the Prius, now the same people champion the technology. Toyota should use the hybrid revenue to stay ahead of the game, for when hybrids inevitably fall out of favour.

No. Get the right logic and reason. The Chinese are the best in solar panels and batteries. They produce the best EVs now and they are not expensive. With the sanctions on Russia by Europe, China found a great market to sell their tech. They have flooded Russia with these cars which are super beautiful. Some European countries are now eying them. Therefore Tesla has no option. Germans understand these well. That was one of the reasons the Chancellor visited China recently where they talked of Chinese 'over capacity'. Again, China has a friendly relation with countries in Africa where they get the minerals for their batteries. They see Africans as partners and not 'nobodies'. China is building capital based projects, infrastructures that Europe out off arrogance neglected. The tide has changed so Tesla has no option. Watch out what India will do to the aerospace soon.

Just because you have something that is expensive does not mean people are jealous of you, especially when they would have to downgrade specifications, build quality and running convenience to acquire a Tesla. At £39,990 in the UK at least very few people can afford to step a foot in to a Tesla. Most people aren't Tesla haters but indifferent to an expensive car especially given the minimalist specification. I would not buy a car without an in front instrument display and simple things like that available in far cheaper ICE cars exclude the basic Tesla. Very little in a Tesla to be jealous of. Most people just do not care about EVs and the price cuts are meaning losses for the companies rather than any sign that this technology is becoming affordable. Tesla show no sign of the affordable car they promise and the ever erratic behaviour of Musk really does not do the company any favours. The EV bubble is bursting not through hate but indifference to an overpriced and tricksy product.

The argument might be stronger if it focused on how investing in the Cybertruck, which has limited appeal due to its US-only availability and low sales figures (under 4,000 units), might have detracted from potentially more profitable ventures such as launching a new car or updating existing models more significantly than just facelifts. Many customers who previously owned a model may switch to a different brand when their lease ends if the same model hasn't evolved significantly. The BBC really don't look at the bigger picture when it comes to Tesla.
I'm far from a Tesla fanboy but the production efficiency at the factory allows Tesla to slash prices without losing profit to gain market share.
As for the Chinese, their strategy in Europe isn't really in full swing at the moment. The cars may be cheap in China but need to be cheaper than the current prices are in Europe. The public's brand knowledge isn't good enough and there is no real incentive to go for their products over more well known brands. BYD sell older designs with the Atto 3 and Dolphin with only the Seal being a real competitor in the market.
It is my belief that the Chinese are only just dipping their toe in the European market and will only come on song when factories are built in Europe and they have better marketing knowledge of how to sell to Europeans.
Tesla are so far ahead in design of software and efficiency and make profits from superchargers and batteries for home wallboxes as well as their other interests in aerospace and robotics. They also sell the best selling car in Europe, the Model Y, by a solid margin.
Falling sales are due to many factors, for example the terrorist attack on the Berlin factory or how Tesla delivers vehicles per month.
Invariably the trend in terms of momentum is increasing market share and Tesla and the Chinese will be the beneficiaries.
The legacy makers will have to merge with Chines brands and some may well be taken over as they become less relevant. They have taken too long to adapt and are already behind in production efficiency, software design and knowledge of EV Drivetrain efficiency.

Seems to me that EV in the accounting book is not an asset. It is an expense - an expenditure item and quickly depreciated to nothing.
    1. Range anxiety
    2. High repair cost in particular on battery
    3. High depreciation due to Tesla cut price rapidly and low resell value

Current generation batteries will outlast the cars they're installed into.

@@EvilijoUK If you ever listen to them they apparently go 800 miles every day without stopping so must rack up 200,000 miles pretty quickly!

To be honest, any car that isn't a limited edition Supersports Car will depreciate in Value rather quickly, a normal car loses 25% of its value in the first year and will loose 50% in the next 3.
