I think the yagis are no help and shutting down the mic is what you saw. An actual test would answer the question , but you changed two things and chose the possible explanation. That fit your pre conceived notion. You technicly proved neither case.
The antenna are the issue. I’ve flown control systems of this type for many years. Directional control or patch antennas always solve the problem. DJI puts panel antennas inside all of their new controllers. Cheap Controllers use inexpensive wire type antennas. This controller could be modified, but its cost prohibiting. Yaggis do help. It’s a fact.
@DadRandom it is also a fact that the experiment you designed proved neither assertion. Other channels have shown marked improvement by switching off their DJI mics. You seem reluctant to do so ....and the only time you did, you then threw another variable into the mix. I am only now starting my journey with the atom and do not have a DJI mic, so I can not do the experiment myself, I was kind of hoping you would.
Yagis are excellent for narrowing the signal to make it go further. Just make sure you are generally pointed in the drones direction. Random’s videos convinced me to purchase a Potensic SE.
Those Yagi antennas are for 5.8GHz but the Potensic Atom uses 2.4GHz so they won't work! I noticed that too! I doubt they're providing any benefit, probably the opposite as they are interfering with the signal rather than helping it. Maybe try again with Yagis that are designed for 2.4GHz?
To the "doubters", I'll stand with Random on this topic. After watching this video, I viewed the video posted by RUclipsr "Drone Valley". The host is an engineer in the field of electronics. I was able to follow him, given my background as a HAM radio operator (General Class). Keep on keepin' on, Random! You have my vote.
If he he is such an expert then why doesn't he know the difference between 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz Yagi antennas and which to use based on simply reading the Atom's specs?
Just did a test flight with the 3-axis gimbal Atom and some $15 2.4 GHz Yagis I found on Amazon. Flying over water so no terrain interference. At 7000’ the drone disconnected and did a RTH. With the Yagis, the drone hit the fence at 10,000’ and no signal warnings. Was windy so I didn’t want to try further.
I can't imagine the yaggis even worked...especially being they had no power source going to them. I've built a few different type of antenna and they all have a main driven element as well as a grounded shield. Without being a part of the reciever board(not slipped over existing antenna), I cannot fathom them doing anything more than causing inteference with the main antennas.
i make drones and i make anttenas...i was making drones before there was gps hold it was all manual then...before dji flooded the market...i make quadrafilar antennas for the differant bands wich work very well..lots of fun....excuse my spelling
I can get to 8,000ft without any Yagis in open space but it struggles a bit towards the end. My HS600 and F11GIM2 will go to 10,000ft without much trouble.
The reflector and directors of a 2.4 Ghz yagi are longer. Not saying a 5.8 Yagi will help you with the Atom, but it's set tuned for 2.4Ghz will probably do you better.
Yagy antennas help but why not make and amplifier that would push it up to 2 watts of power..this mote then enough amplification for the battery application..your battery would be out of power before you use all the amplification....what it will do is allow you better control of the drone over the various noise levels out there..
I don't understant why you did not do the test with and without antennas. Moreover, the distance you made is the normal distance I do. And yes the mike affect this drone, and No this yaggi is not tuned for 2.4 GHz. Useless test.

Not even close to mini 2 Se in price.. No way...i got the 3 axis atom at 370 $ Aussie dollars and the Se is still selling second hand at 550 650 and new at 580 $ so it's a big difference.. I wouldn't of baught it if it was, I know they are selling it now overpriced but when it came out there were many special deals going on
