Jess, God has used you in my life in unbelievable ways. We bought our bare 30 acres right after you. We put our garden in right after you. Just this morning we were discussing our thoughts for the orchard. I’m so blessed for you sharing your wisdom and encouragement. It has shaped me tremendously.

That is awsome. I started to follow Jess and Miah when I was still living in the big city. Little I knew I am going to move to a property in the country. Since then thanks to Jess I ate my own tomatoes and capsicums. Slowly growing other things and we are just about to put a long swell behind the house to slow down the gushing water from behind the hill. She is amaizing young lady. Good luck with your growing home. Nice to know you are on the similar path as Jess.

Years ago, so many that I don’t remember the source, I read a book where the author was talking about her father’s orchard in the spring. He had planted many apple trees - several types, cherry trees around them, and peach trees around them.
She said that in the springtime the mature orchard looked like a quilt - all pink and white. She said her daddy had designed the orchard with that vision in mind. ❤️

Yes it’s amazing how Jordan and Saudi are creating excellent examples of dedesertification these past 10-15 years. Palestinians have been offered multiple £billions as encouragement to do same to become sustainable AND crop exporters.
Loving how folk are getting on with permaculture behind the “scenes”….

You won't have to mow around the trees if you plant "guilds" around the trees permaculture/ food forest style.
Comphrey, garlic, blueberries, pest prevention plants, edible ground covers, like strawberries, etc.
They work together and provide more food😊

The best swales, burmes video- tiny shiny home in the desert. They had an expert who measures the land to divert water and the community planted about 100 trees in the sides of the depression they dug out. The roots get the water perfectly! The family work together and named each tree after the donors, took pictures of each tree and sent to everyone who help buy and plant! WOW!

There is a design in permaculture called the net and pan poly culture. It helps to slow down the flow of water during rain. Each pan flows into the next. Helping each fruit tree catch the water. I’m so excited to see your orchard going in Jess ❤

We just put in our new food forest, and the steeper bits we couldn't get the tiller to, we did that pit/mini berm thing and alternated them along the rows so water that runs between the trees on the first line will hit a pit on the next row and so on. I love watching the development of your land!

Jo Hubbard…if you will use black plastic sewer pipe about 18 to 24 inches high around the bottoms of your fruits trees or any tree…. it will prevent anything eating the bark off of them. Also you can weed eat around the bottom of them. Make sure to split from the top to the bottom of the pipe so once they get big enough, the pipe can taken off and reused. You won’t need to fence them 😊this way.

Jess, I wanted to let you know about some long gardening gloves called “Fox Gloves” that I’ve found really helpful for my skin. I get the “Elle” elbow length style with grips. They’re expensive, but they last a long time and wash up well. Just don’t get them tangled up in velcro like I did with some velcro tomato wrap. 🙈 Also, I’d pay attention to the sizing - I have small hands (4.5 ring size, usually a XS or S) but I take a medium with Fox Gloves. Hope this helps someone!

I have Lupus and the sun and heat bother me tremendously. Being in the sun causes swelling and skin lesions… it’s a joy. I’m feeling your pain with the eczema flare up. I look so silly, but I keep a beach umbrella on hand and when I need to go out and garden, or exist anywhere in the sun, I take my beach umbrella with me. It’s a pain, and it’s not 100%, but it is so much better.

If you've never heard of it, it has dark purple smallish fruits with a pit. My grandmother had one in her yard when I was a young girl (i am almost 62). Maybe the method you are using to plant those fruit trees can be called "the Cup & Saucer method"? That's what springs to mind for me anyway.
I have a fairly steep south-facing slope to the small area part-way down the hill where I had to build a dry creek bed to channel runoff. I have that area planned for my mini-fruit orchard (about 2/3 acre) of dwarf trees. I was considering terracing it, then thought about the swales (same issues with mowing came to my mind, and it's already just a touch challenging due to the slope), but wasn't really feeling it either way. This idea actually feels right for my situation, and being a 60-something woman with limited help available for such tasks, it is also something I can physically accomplish this Autumn. YAY! Thank you for sharing this!
Please remember that the time you spend in healing yourself now will pay dividends in the future. Sending continued hope for the blessing of healing, dear child. Hugs from Texas.

My question is this - tips on trying to count the cost to get an idea of what kind of budget I need to plan on for my homestead... do I just look around at the websites and see how much electric fences cost and chicken houses and high tunnels and green houses? Do you have anything that people generally dont know to include as a cost? I'm trying to create a plan"while waiting in my classroom" ;) and I am ordering your new book! Thank you! I am planning some orchards, but on very different land, but the principles are the same, thank you!
Also, I lived so much of my life on steroids, and now, doing the autoimmune diet, but I have a hard time with creams; I made some from a new recipe, it is 1/2 cup shea butter, 1/2 cup coconut oil, 30 drops of lavender, 5 drops of tea tree oil, and optional, 5 drops of myrrh or geranium essential oil (I didn't have myrrh, so used frankincense, we'll see) and 1 tbsp, a big one, of local honey (I got Manuka honey for it's additional healing properties, so I used that). I have done not as hot showers, and I air dry instead of toweling, then apply this cream. On bad days, nights, I wear evening gloves, they go to the elbow; some days I have worn them also. Hope this isn't too long, and that it is helpful, God bless you

Do you intend to plant Hickory Nut Trees? Or maybe the question should be will they actually grow there?
I am in Michigan and we had a Hickory Nut Tree on our farm and I don't remember anyone else who had a tree like this but my grandmother ha d a recipe and made a cake with Hickory Nuts in the frosting, we called them Hickory Cakes. That is a one of a kind type of cake and frosting. Fantastic and Delicious. And on cold winter nights the entire family sat around our wood stove and picked Nut meats from those Hickory Nuts. It is a lot of work to pick Nut meats from Hickory Nuts.
It's not the same a picking Pecans or Walnuts etc. because the size of the Nut is so small. But, to me it just seems like the South would not be the South without families sitting around in circles picking Hickory Nut Meats from the Nuts of a Hickory Tree.
To me if anyone would be doing this it would be your farm your family. And I'm interested in knowing.
Thank you for sharing all you share and teaching so much of what you teach.
    God Bless you always.

Love seeing the progress on the orchard. I will have to try the pit swales for my orchard I started this year. It has a good slope. I was thinking of just doing a small channel in front of the mulch but the pit may be better. Thanks for the idea!
