    The perfect combination of value, practicality and performance, the VW GTI is the quintessential hot hatchback. When I think of the best all around car for a car enthusiast, the GTI often comes to mind. Bringing a strong turbocharged 2.0L 4 cylinder, good transmissions, plenty of storage space and plenty of tech and amenities, the GTI puts a smile on your face without breaking the bank! The best way to combine a sports car and a daily driver into one reasonably priced package! Check out this ownership perspective a tuned Unitronic Stage 1 Mk.7 VW GTI!

      @@turboshottho That's not true. The car's weigh some 3,200 pounds (actual on average) and traps at 100 MPH when well driven. (The more powerful 2019 and 2020 models are trapping in the 101 - 102 MPH range).
      Using Hale's tried and true trap speed (not to be confused with traction affected ET), we see that:
      Approx. peak flywheel HP = (101 MPH/234)^3 * 3,400 pounds, wherein 3,400 pounds is curb weight plus a 200 pound driver.
      273 peak flywheel HP.
      Even a low 99 MPH trap speed equates to approximately 257 HP.
      I was in my twenties when I owned my then new 1998 Mustang LX 5.0 notchback (with a trunk). That was the lightest model, with mine weighing 3,070 curb.
      Both my 2015 and 2018 GTIs are ultimately faster cars, especially after 50 MPH. I also drove 230 HP IROC Zs in the 80s. The GTIS are faster cars.
      The GTI's are especially quick from 50 MPH right up to the governed top speed. They're making more than 237 HP.

    When the Mk 7 GTI first came out, the engines in early cars were dynoing around 230 hp, as opposed to the claimed 210. I'd definitely believe it, the car felt much, much quicker than the Mk 6 lease that I had turned in. Yes, the car obviously had more claimed torque, but it felt like there was more top end grunt as well.
    Fun fact, the same chassis engineer who oversaw development of the 991 Porsche GT3 RS worked on the Mk 7. Also something you instantly feel stepping from the 6 to the 7.

      @Lessenjr 4 года назад +1

      Did your fuel mileage slowly get better between brand new and 2500 miles? My daily commute is only 16 miles each way and my normal route is probably like 80% highway. My last tank I averaged 25.0mpg (getting cold in Cleveland so idling 10 min. before I head out makes a difference) on a custom setting with engine at ECO tank getting almost 29mpg each way to and from work. That's 80mph highway and being VERY eco conscious 90% of the time in town when I'm not intentionally enjoying the acceleration. This tank I've set engine to NORMAL and the last two days it actually seems to be a couple mpg better? So, I'm thinking just the break in period... FYI car is only at 800 miles on the ODO.

All the shift points change to accommodate the drop off of torque and power at 5000RPM. Trust me, the TCU tune is worth it. Your car will be junk within 50K miles if you makes use of that power on anything that remotely resembles a frequent basis.
      VW engineers go to great lengths in specifying upgraded factory components for very modest power increases. Do you think they make that effort and spend that extra money for no reason?

    Dealers do some decent discounting on the GTI, which just doesn’t happen for the R. The best way to approach new GTI shopping is to get the best trim you can negotiate for sub-$30K OTD. With a little effort, you can likely find a dealer that will play ball on an SE trim (best value IMO). For under $30K, you really can’t beat the overall value proposition of the GTI.

      Of course you realize that any "tune" will greatly exacerbate the EA888's carbon buildup issues (valves and chambers), in addition to requiring more frequent oil and filter changes while placing much greater loads on your transaxle, half shafts and CV joints.

    how about driver mod and snow tires? took Team O'neil rally course, the GTI is a lot of fun in the snow, but winter tires are a must. My Mk7 is stock, swap btw Pilot sports 4S and Blizzaks WS80. Winter driving requires a lot of left foot braking, but the golf tends to cut power quite aggressively when LFB, hence, you need to always keep minimal pressure on the brake to over come this, then apply throttle. I drive a Rabbit edition manual and I have no issues with passing on the highway at stock power. The DSG is butter smooth but it's very annoying when trying to pull into gaps and pass because it's too slow to react and downshift a lot of the time; even in sport mode.

    • @marveysingh8157
      @marveysingh8157 5 лет назад +1

      Ridgey that’s weird my mk7 GTI doesn’t take a while to downshift? And you’re right power wise on highway etc against most cars it’s more than enough but sometimes u need that more punch! I agree(i got a 2016 s manual) it is awesome at passing in nearly all scenarios. But i wouldnt mind my 4th gear 70mph pull to feel like my 2nd gear 20mph pull. So i plan on tuning as well.

      yea the car really takes off with the torque its really easy to pass on the highway. I completely disagree as well about the passing power. . On DSG it is better to manual downshift and pass by hitting the paddle it will override and downshift and then all you gtta do is pull the stick back and it will go back into D.

I went COBB and then went MAP stage 1 and it was great until I messed with stuff because I wanted to compare stock to Stage 1 and then within a week I started seeing the engine pull timing. It still pulls timing at 1.5k-2k rpm anything above 3k on the COBB stage 1 seems to be fine though. I will definitely be going with a pro-tune just for peace of mind.

    GTI Autobahn price is so close to the Golf R. As far as drivability, Golf R is a nice daily driver too with more features i.e. digital display and AWD. With stock GTI, traction is a challenge in some driving situations since it’s a FWD. Golf R’s AWD solves that issue.

    • @peteshea8010
      @peteshea8010 4 года назад +1

      Or a 2020 GLI. CAR AND DRIVER's recent "Lightning Lap" event reported that their current model GLI produced a faster lap time than their most recently tested Golf R.
      Also, the Golf R uses VW's standard open front differential, while GTIs and GLIs use VW far more sophisticated VAQ differential, which is limited slip, torque vacating and fully lockable when conditions permit.
      Factor in the Golf Rs heftier weight and essentially all of its "on paper" advantage disappears.

      This is actually a relatively common opinion. The R tends to understeer more with its heavier/ bulkier AWD system. For a quick, tossable car, the GTI is the way to go. But don't tune the GTI past ~300 hp without doing other stuff or you'll probably end up with torque steer
