I'd heard from a friend of John Renbourn that he liked the 1 and 3 (alternate finger) combination, and he knew a thing or two about finger dexterity...
I do this very often and can confirm it brings results if done regularly. Sometimes I do it while on the train commuting to work: I use the fingers of the other hand to simulate the strings. To me, the hardest position is the alternate one. It helps me to look at the fingers that are supposed to lift.
