Only a true diesel mechanic leaves their truck idling the whole time! I love it!
I once helped get a 60 year old d-8 going after sitting for 20 years. It was so satisfying hearing the old girl fire up.
I love to see people reclaiming old equipment , I commend anyone how does so !
What you called the fuel pump , is not , but rather the injection pump, & there is probably a full pump supplying it , & where the fuel line comes out of the tank there is usually a drain valve pet-cock , on old equipment always open it to see if there is water in the bottom of the tank !
You said 2 fuel filters which is 1/2 right , one is called a water separator ,it has a plastic nut on the bottom so you can check for water there also , however with old abandoned equipment I would also take it off & then refill with diesel !
On the fuel injector pump , where it bolts to the back of the timing cover , there is usually a chisel make on both , that is where it was factory set It is important that it be set correctly , as in gasoline if to far advanced will be hard to.crank over & when running you will hear a sharp pinging , but if it is late you will suffer poor power & also melt the edge of the piston bowl damaging the piston !!
As for starting, use very little starting fluid , & then in very short bursts ,& if possible start cranking before spaying, you can blow a hole in a piston or blow a head gasket , I find a way to use WD40 spraying it directly into the intake manifold, ! On my tractor I have an auxiliary starter button mounted so that I can stand outside the tractor , I took a plug out of the intake manifold , installed a small ball valve , & a plug in the end of it to keep it clean so that if I run out of fuel I can remove the plug , open the valve , stick in the WD40 needle & spray constantly until it starts to run correctly. Much safer than either ! The injectors should be taken out & serviced , they must trip at the correct pressure & spray properly atomizing the fuel !
Since you had water in the hydraulic oil you will have to totally drain it , & also all cylinders, crack the lines open BEFORE activating & with the line off activate the control slightly to see what comes out , try to drain as much out of each cyl so as not the contaminate your new oil !
Old hydraulic lines the rubber inside can break down , so should be replaced , any good hydraulic shop will build new ones , also there is a big filter, needs to be changed , also one for the drive transmission & it also should be drained & changed ! The trans requires special oil !
The dirt wipers on each cyl will be dried out & cracked ,which will allow dirt into the packing gland , causing it to go out , & this dirt can scratch the cylinder , the only way to replace it is to disassemble the cyl , so while you have it apart , go ahead & rebuild it ! You will probably need special tool to disassemble, clean the cyl end thoroughly & look for a small screw or bolt that keeps the gland from unscrewing. With the cyl disassembled, check the inside for damage , it may need honed !! There are lots of shops to help you !
Good luck
So about 2hrs work. - incl lunch?
You need to listen to this man and his reply is since he's been there done that, a fuel water separator is coming on Industrial and Commercial equipment
You are indeed a diesel mechanic..because you did it...you make that thing crank up and running..congratulations....
Thank you
In the 1990's I spent a summer in the high Rockies of N. New Mexico running a T-500, improving and building ranch roads. That machine had the deafening 6-71 Detroit engine. It was a capable machine and I had quite an adventure.
i really like you breathing life in these classics GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES
Thanks for posting and sharing. Great to hear that old diesel turn over and run!
You did great! I appreciated that you didn’t edit out mistakes and stayed true in your narrative. I have been doing a lot of research into a myford Diesel engine an it opened up a whole new reality. Keep up the great work
I found this channel and video by accident to be honest. What interested me was your Knowledge of the machine and how you knew exactly what to look for and how to fix it. Old knowledge in a young body . Impressive young man
Thank you
The filter is a sealed unit and 14 years isn’t really long enough to decay everything like if it were 30-40 years! I’ve seen videos on those and they’re usually a challenge! This machine looks really in good shape! But you’re doing a great job my friend, it’s nice to see someone rescuing these forgotten machines! 👌🏻👍🏻
It’s a lot of fun messing with the older machines! Before all the computers and emissions garbage.
@@rustbucketrevival well I wish you all the best my friend and I have a lot of mechanics channels! You should get some procedures from them because you really missed a lot of things to do before you turn the key brother!
You probably never need to pull the fuel pump, just spray some PB blaster on the linkage and then the starter you did good just needed to hook up some jumper wires at the solenoid and stand back after cracking a fuel line to get the air out! I think that was 99% of the problem! Never stay next to the machine when trying to crank it with jumper wired button, could start in gear if you’re not sure if it’s in neutral! Plus the first fuel filter should’ve been changed, it catches 90% of the trash the other one is a secondary filter and could’ve stayed until you had another one! Drain the water from hyd. Oil and diesel fuel tanks! But all in all you didn’t a good job trying! I suggest you watch, Wesworks, he’s an amazing mechanic on gasoline and Diesel engines! And Vise Grip Garage, Derek is an amazing mechanic too and he’s a funny guy but awesome with mechanics! Watch them if you get into this more seriously my friend! I’d like to see you get into it more but it’s not for everyone! I’m a retired welder of 37 years and I loved and if you ever need any advice on welding, don’t hesitate to ask me buddy! I hope I helped you my friend, I’m glad you’re doing it and I hope you enjoy it! You stay safe and don’t feed those Diesel engines with too much throttle and starting fluid! lol 😂👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I live 15 miles south of Galion, Ohio. Worked 3 years at Gledhill Road machinery. Love to see old machinery running and made usefull again.
You're not even a diesel mechanic but you know what you're doing yeah, great job mike...keep it up...
Way to go man,I ran a grader for 37 years, started in an Allis Chalmers 100 c,you did pretty good for not being a diesel mechanic
Hello from Oklahoma! Good video! I've been a mechanic for ever 40 years. I'm 61. I never use starting fluid on a diesel. WD40 is much more forgiving. That poor old monster was stubborn. That was a hell of a project.
That old girl is a BEAST!...Nice to see her running again...I hope she gets put back to work...
We are gonna try!
Great job, Also a honest video and you left the mistakes in it as well, We all learn from mistakes made. And at the end you got the engine going. New hose and lines and she is good to go.
I love old equipment like this. Sometimes the family puts the equipment back to work doing road work for the family business
Very nice!
Persistent and patient! Mixing the two is always a nice taste, you have a good head on your shoulders. Keep on going!
Thank you!
You welcome..you deserve the Like Button.
My neighbor has like this and tracs cat and wheeld cat and roller of road asphalt and more and he has just passed away.all these stand without moving
A grader is such a handy machine, 1001 uses! Grade, ditch, crown, scarafy, tow, dress banks, degrass(pull up lawns), plow snow, plow sand. We've welded or bolted profile plates on the blade for prepping for side walks, curbs, gutters, and drains. Still like to see a ROPS and a roof or cover.
I'm quite proud of the time took to get going right and not killing it with ether as its good to help but not to keep one going on for long periods of time. It won't hurt it but seemingly they start liking ether if used very much. I like it if they have some glow plugs and it really helps when they have primers on them... take a few minutes and see how they bleed a injector so that they pick up their fuel faster..... nice job and I will be watching for more
Way to go man, I too had no clue the fuel pump had to be timed correctly.
Should be a threaded hole in the fuel pump to hold the timing in place !
It is true the fuel pump does NOT have to be timed but the INJECTOR pump does
Same as here
He's a smart guy
@@normfreilinger5655 kkkkkkkkkkk
Adoro ver essas máquinas antigas voltando a funcionar
Meus parabéns 👏👏👏👏
Man I love the sound of this engine 💪😍👍
A very nice performance of trouble shooting you'be done to a galeon 500 grader to be back in service , am so em pressed coz am also a mechanic major in trouble shooting in diesel engine...
more power to you my friend..
Sounds nice and it was good u got it back and running alive
Great job Justin. I love seeing old diesel machines come back to life.
Thank you!
@@rustbucketrevival แจ่มเลยครับ.
@@rustbucketrevival these exceptional piece of machinery like diesel trucks are often left in the woods abandoned when their owners pass away, there's no way in hell that this machine would stay unused In the woods if he was still there
I've had this weird obsession with graders since I was a kid. No idea why haha. Nice save!
Awesome video amazing after 14 years you got that thing to start but just got to remember simple mechanics back then not as complex as the s*** they got today
Nice job... Bring the dead to life again👍🏽👍🏽....so relaxing to watch your video bro
You claim not to be a decent mechanic but you got it running! I think you did an awesome job! Great work!
Brings back childhood memories
Gotta love the friend who shows up when you're done with a snack (for himself of course). We all have one of those.
I glad, as mechanic, dont need extra pay to booked as education for newbie... 🤣🤣🤣
Adoro vídeos de máquinas antigas.✌️✌️✌️
Aqui numa fazenda tem uma máquina mais antiga que essa abandonada destruída pelo tempo tão antiga que para virá a lâmina dela era na manivela
This beauty is really going to help your property service (on your shirt), especially snow shoveling. ;-)
Finally Optimus is brought back to life😊😊👌
Máy này lớn quá chừng cảm ơn bạn đã chia sẻ hay mến chào bạn chúc bạn vui thanks ok
Wanted to see you drive it out of there! Nice work.
That will be the next video!
Mantap Brow 👍🙏🇮🇩
I was thinking the same.
You will get 1M subscribers from 1 year for sure..best compliments from sri lanka 🇱🇰..Good luck Justin ♥️
Hey, Justin. I'm new (just subscribed) to the channel. I think you did great! I'm not gonna sit here and complain about how you should have done this, should have done that and tell you to go back to fishing. No one does the same thing, travels the same path or wears the same thing every day. You're doing different things with your time. Branching out, trying a new phase in life. I say Go for it! Never mind the naysayers.
Thank you! I appreciate that!

Espetacular, bons profissionais parabéns 👋👋👍
nice, the best part of this whole video is hearing that Turbo sp00ling up! :)
great job. . . watching from quezon city, philippines 7:17PM june 12, 2021
😂
I like it because that's my dream to be mechanic
GOOD JOB. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THIS BEAST OF A MACHINE GET CUSTOMIZED. HIGH GLOSS PAINT JOB WITH VANTA BLACK ACCENTS WITH THE ENGINE CHROMED OUT, AND FULLY FUNCTIONAL.👍🏽
we need a race of this
...and a calendar girl in the operator's seat.
The suspense is over in the first five seconds of the video. It starts.
awesome video man! i'm a diesel mechanic myself and love videos like these, i love seeing these old beasts come back to life.
I also think you have a couple of sticky injectors that are dumping raw fuel making starting very difficult due to low atomization of the fuel. Those mechanical injectors are pretty easy to take apart and clean, or you can be like me and dump a gallon of ATF in the fuel tank and have it do the work for you haha, anyways, great video, cheers mate!
Highly appreciated... keep it up man...👍👍
Good work , I ran a t500 for years plowing snow up here in New Hampshire had a cab and wing on it , the same machine you got there we ran ATF fluid for hyd. fluid because of the cold , good machine.
Very cool! Someone else told me they ran ATF in one. What’s the benefit to that?
@@rustbucketrevival , ATF won't foam, it's very stable and won't be affected by real cold weather, In our shop when we replaced fuel filters we filled them up with ATF instead of diesel; it works great for that.
I'm from Indonesia wow amazing
Great video ! 👍
I just subscribed, love to watch the old machine being alive again.
Well, I Like your video. Because it didn't drag on forever. The video went straight into action.
Cool machine. When I lived in Pennsylvania years ago, they used those to plow snow
I would've liked to see the grader roll out of the woods
Me too !
Me three
me four
Me five
Please do more videos with the grader and will it start. Just found your channel and enjoyed watching. Subscribed
Hello great job get in 14 years sitting Gatlin started can do video when first move the old Galin 👍👈
Thank you
Love the start up! Next video driving it please! Thanks
Need a struggle to turn it on but hard work doesn't betray the results 💪💪
What surprised me the most was not that it was launched after 14 years, but that it stood for 14 years and did not disappear in the direction of receiving scrap metal.
Well, you understand, my country is Russia.
Parabéns admiro pessoas que fazem essas velhas máquinas funcionarem pajens mesmo
Final mente um br eae mano
The start was a nice payoff, a better one would have been to see it move under it's own power. Nine the less, good work there.
That will be in the next video! This video was getting to long and I still have a lot of work to get it out.
Thanks for watching!
@@rustbucketrevival bruh, it's been 2 months. Move it already.
Galion grader--made by the Galion Iron Works, 10 miles from my house.
It’s a I H so yeah it’s gonna start. Great videos y’all!
First video of yours that I've seen, i subscribed right away, great video, keep it up
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Likewise
Good work dude! sounds good. Can't wait for more! This puts me in the summertime work mode!
Thanks! I’m waiting on the tube for the front tire to come in so we can start working on getting it out of the woods.
Bom profissional amo ver o ronco desses motores
Great video brother old machine
amazing machine .
Great job sir
Hell of good job man. Love to see that old iron fire up .
Big fan of this content. I would be interested in seeing these types of videos become a series, showing progress of them moving and repaired back to fully functional. Just a thought to get more content on your page and see you grow in views.
Thank you I appreciate that
Hey bud great vid and I have spent many hrs on a galion blade great ole girls my last one was a 550A with a Dt 466 in it 👍👍
I lay you odds the loose starter wire was a safety that the old guy took loose and left off so someone messing around couldn't start it. I've seen that done on other machines.
You are probably right
@@rustbucketrevival They're tough old machines. The 118's were around for years.
watching from Philippines
Well I didn't have to watch to vid you answered really quick. Thanks
Would be more complete if we saw hydraulics work or the machine move a bit. Good video nonetheless! Looking for more..
One of the first things before starting is open turbo air inlet and make sure it is turning "freely. Maybe oil in the top oil port to lubricate it with lubricant!
you are verry good,,,,,thangk u for seen this ......
i like see all you video.hai from malaysia
Wawww se jeant thanke you very match forever goode job abondonede 👍👍👍👍💪💪💪💪🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿😍😍😍
Super , Diesel ist ein sehr Starker Motor !!!.
Excellent upload. Full watched and have a wonderful day...
Thank you for the support
Ive always thought it would be cool to make a 6x6 off road truck out of one of these. Just fabricate a frame and mod the drive train, stick a 1960's truck cab and hood on it, fabricate some flat fenders, and youve got a custom Ural military truck.
Why go to all that trouble ? Just find you an old Dodge Power Wagon , drop in a 4bt Cummins & for the 3rd axle tp make a 6x6 probably a small military unit . I know a man that had a old power wagon with 10.00 x20 tires & chains off a log skidder , front winch , go anywhere
@@robertmintz63 A diesel power wagon sounds like fun too, but if i find one of these in the woods, along with alot of spare time, you know what ill be doing! :)
good job, greetings from Indonesia country Chanel 👍
Wow so very cool 🥰
Great job!
The trees wanted to entrap the grader 😱
Keep up the good work
It is always more entertaining for the audience if you edit out your Monday and stuff such as tighten the cable end rather than fast forwarding it.
dude.. so proud of you 👏🏼👍🏼
sir im from Philippines a filipino and im enjoying watching your vedio sir on how to restart abandoned heavy equipment like this. and i hope more vedio to show sir love it and subscribe on your channel sir. nice to learn on you sir👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽😊😊😊😊
Ok kaayo
wow two trees , one front and back wow

That man is probably smiling at you thankful somebody didn't let it rust and is treating it good
After 14 years water rust condensation fuel pump timing correct . Amen few shots quick start amazing it fired .
