    In Australia, when I was a lad, I worked underground with Scottish miners, most of them originated in some place called “ the Gorbals” fearsome men, fearsome drunks, fearsome fighters, nicest blokes you would ever want to work with, lend them money and they chased you to repay it, give them a helping hand and they would repay it tenfold if you didn’t stop them.

    One of his best stories. He was great in the old days when he was still drinking and had the stories to go with it. No criticism of him giving up the booze.

    • @irbennett
      @irbennett 4 месяца назад +1

      If he hadn't given up drinking, he would be dead, and we wouldn't be having this conversation. And as abundantly became clear he didn't need to drink to be funny.

    • @paulbradford8240
      @paulbradford8240 4 месяца назад

      @@irbennett I'm not denying that his health, or anybody's health for that matter can benefit from not drinking. However, I still think he was funnier then. Obviously that's a matter of opinion. His stories were often from his experiences. Many of his stories were drink related and as such were very funny. I think and again it's my opinion, that he isn't as funny as he was. I refer you to my last line, 'No criticism of him giving up the booze'

    • @irbennett
      @irbennett 2 месяца назад +1

      @@paulbradford8240 Interesting, as Billy has been very critical of his early days as a comedian. He has said he just wasn't good enough, and was drunk most of the time he was onstage. Sure he was popular, but he couldn't carry on the way he was going. His career would grind to a halt, and if he didn't stop drinking he would be dead. The upturn began when he stopped with the drink, and in the process became much funnier. The man is unique, but at least he's still alive.

    I'm a big Connolly fan, but I've got to admit his early stuff was the best. This looks like it was from the '70's. Imo from the mid 1980's his comedy lost something, its still brilliant but somehow missing something. I think maybe its because back then Connolly was fresh from Glasgow and the shipyards, but for the past 20 odd years he's lived a "luvvie" sort of lifestyle, and its taken the edge off of his comedy. be interested to hear what other people think

    I loved his earlier stuff. He seemed to mellow after the 80s, and was never quite the same. His meandering storytelling style was unique, and the way he pull true stories into the mix made him without doubt the best comedian of his generation.

    There was a psychiatrist in San Francisco that would tell his clients if they were feeling depressed to go home and watch a Billy Connolly dvd. I wonder how much he charged?

    If you are at your computer or tablet watching Billy Connolly for the first time, put away anything you are eating or drinking. You’ll thank me later.
