Fisherman’s Rib
Rnd 1: *K1b, p1. Rep from * around.
Rnd 2: *K1, p1b. Rep from * around.
Rep Rnds 1 - 2 for pattern until work measures desired length from cast-on row. Sample shown was 9 1/2 for a slightly slouchy fit on my slightly larger than average lady head, go shorter for more of a beanie, longer for extra slouch.
Crown Shaping:
Change to DPNs; make sure to place marker on a stitch instead of the needle if you haven’t yet.
Rnd 1: *Ssk. Rep from. Around. 24 sts
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnds 3 -4: Rep Rnds 1 - 2. 12 sts
Finishing:
Cut yarn leaving a 10” - 12 tail for sewing up.
Thread the cut end through a tapestry or yarn needle.
Thread the tapestry needle through all 12 remaining sts.
Pull into a tight circle, fasten off and weave in that end on the inside of the hat.
Weave in starting end.
Very Impressive; your explanation and knitting techniques are admirable to say the least! 😊😊😊😊😊😊
This is an awesome pattern. Was able to knit in a day and have a lovely hat to wear out for the evening. Received lots of compliments. Thanks for sharing, Mary Beth!
Thanks for your comment!
Very good directions. Thank you
Simple but beautiful pattern. Thanks Mary Beth.
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful decrease. Thank you!!!!!!!!
Love the look of this hat I will be trying it soon 😊
Is this hat designed to have the cuff turned up, or do you need to add more length if you want that? Thanks.
That hat was designed to be slouchy so the ribbing is just there to keep it on the person’s head. It’s a little oversized. If you want to turn the ribbing back on itself I would knit it longer.
Nice pattern. How many stitches on yarn #5 for a woman's size?
thank you it was well instructed
Love this pattern. I am currently knitting this hat and I am trying to determine how long to make it. Do you have any pictures of it being worn? That would help me a ton. Thanks for sharing how to make this cute hat!!!
There are pictures of my friend Jenna wearing it on my blog post - hookedforlifepublishing.com/2020/12/16/fishermans-rib-hat/
Thank you! It's very cute!!!
Would please if you don’t mind to let me know how did cost on what was the way, because there are many way?
What happens if you were to use the same sized needles the entire time?
Nice hat pattern. If I wanted to do this in worsted weight with more stitches and smaller needles, would the top decreases still work? Or would I have to do more rounds for the top? Thanks
How two prevent droping a stitch when it comest to knit one below?
You just have to be very certain you are in the center of that stitch below - technically that top stitch does drop but if you are in the stitch below it can only drop one row, if that makes sense.
Do you have a pattern for a hat in broken or mistaken rib stitch? I love it for a scarf but can figure out how to make a hat on circular needles.
No but I will add it to my list of things to do!
If I want to knit it in DK how would that work?
It would work it would just be smaller! You could always add more stitches at the cast-on.
Question please-I’m doing a fisherman’s rib in a lighter weight yarn so I have 144 stitches-do I simply continue doing ask rounds with work even rounds in between until I get to a small enuf amount of stitches to gather and close the crown OR is there a different method I shld use? Ty!
You would probably still have to do some crown decreases - even with a light weight yarn 144 would be a LOT to pull into a circle!
If you don't have circular needle than for dpn can work?
Yes you can!
Hi Mary Beth. A question. After CO, a pattern says knit across. This is a 2color pattern. I'm supposed to change colors but doesn't say turn or slide. Please 🙏 help. I want to continue til the week morning hours. Thank you.
So its cast on then 5 rounds of k1, p1 ribbing. It’s not a two color hat, it was made in 1 color of yarn that has two colors plied in a barber pole style! And no sliding - sliding is in Brioche which looks similar to Fisherman’s Rib but is not the same. I actually think this is simpler than Brioche.
Wait is it this pattern or a different one? I may be having a reading comprehension fail.
48 stitches are for what size?
It would depend on your gauge and what weight yarn you are using.
Thank you * very precisely " Tutoring
Hi 👋 could I make this on straight needles
So here’s the thing - if you make it on straight needles and work in rows you make Fisherman’s Rib a different way with no purl 1 belows. Maybe check out my scarf video which has Fisherman’s Rib on straight needles and work it flat.
Thank you for reply , I like the idea of purling I below I’ll have learn to knit in the round thanks once again 🙏
beautiful cap maam, maam i want this needle please send me.
❤
You do nice and fun things but you speak sooooo quickly. I got lost when you were speaking so quickly about needles. And where does one get double pointed needles?
It's the New Yorker in me - I used to talk faster believe it or not :-) You can get DPNs at almost any craft or yarn store.
