Understand that those two pickups you reference are very different sounding (I like to say responding) the one from the other. The 59/Custom Hybrid is considerably higher output, and has a LOT more midrange than the 59, which has a scooped midrange and low (vintage) output.
yes i have the 59 already ..it's a nice pickup , quite a bit of compression which suits heavier tones but the midrange does bother me a bit i must admit..a bit too scooped for my liking. im guessing the 59 hybrid is a lot more modern sounding which i don't really want either.. Im looking for a slightly more higher output vintage voiced pickup with similar output of the 59 hybrid about 12k
Probably one of the best displays of picking dynamics I have ever seen. Equally impressive is how these pickups delivered. I'm more of a LP single cut kind of player, but if I can find an HSS strat that doesn't give me hand cramps Im all the way up into these pickups. I have now watched this video 3 times. Great Job Seymour Duncan!
I've been playing for 52 years. I'm 66 years old now and I still love to play and I would give almost anything to be able to play like this. Man this sounds awesome.
Wow! GREAT demo. Well produced and not a one-trick, one sound, one angle job. Really put it through its paces and showed how versatile this pickup can be. Kudos...
That's because a mid scooped pickup is inherently more versatile than a mid heavy pickup. The Custom Custom does great 1981-1984 Van Halen/Van Hagar era tones but isn't the pickup for NWOBHM/Thrash or Glam Metal at all. You want screaming sustaining harmonics like EVH or crunchy palm muting Metal? You can't have both in one pickup it's one or the other.
This demo makes me seriously consider the idea of changing pickups in my Guitar (already outfitted with SD's). There's a real warmth there with a versatility that has been really well communicated by the excellent playing on the demo -- there are some unbelievable tones here and subtleties across the whole breadth of this track really shine. There are times when the tone sits back - at times it pops - but the warmth and beauty is what really gets me. Tone it appears is both in the fingers and in the pickups. Love it - cool tune too.
I bought the Antiquity JB because of the shootout you have done between the 3 different ones. I think you just sold me on this pickup for my PRS SC245. The production on this video was great. Tone, playing and humor. Well Done !
Very very nice! The AWB reference in the midst of all the RAWK was an exceptional irony! Well done video and audio, but also an excellent demonstration of the pickup. I'd never considered one until now.
Here it is 2020 and the well-deserved love for this presentation continues to .... abide. Just ran across one of these pickups and can't wait to get it installed....
5:15 reminds me of Kansas ("Carry On Wayward Son") or Blue Oyster Cult ("Don't Fear the Reaper"). Two of my fave guitar tones. Looking at this pickup for a future build.
Wow. I always thought of the '59 as a neck pickup or one that would be best for "Vintage" sounding stuff exclusively. This seems to be SO very versatile and dynamically powerful that my mind is a bit blows. FANTASTIC playing and a serious inspiration to get back to the woodshed!! Great stuff all around!
I have one in my Gibson Les Paul R9 and it is my favourite bridge pickup in a Les Pal by far. I have 6x Les Paul’s with everything from (bridge pickups) Burst Bucker 2, Seymour Duncan PAF 36th Anniversary and 3x Gibson Customs with 498T’s. All sound great but for my taste which is Blues, Classic Rock to 90’s Metal this 59/Custom Hybrid is so soooo good! ✌🏻
I just made one of these for my 7-string. (Since Seymour Duncan doesn't MAKE a 7-string version of this awesome pickup. Grr. And doing it this way, you also get a free Custom/59 pickup... the inversion of the 59/Custom!) Sounds amazing! It's a very, very different pickup. Most organic, woody sounding pickup I've ever played, and is extremely, extremely touch and volume sensitives. Super dynamic. Almost sounds like a single coil when clean, and pairs great with other pickups. Love it. BTW, you can coil split whatever coil you want with it. I split both on my setup. Once you understand the wiring, the green wire (south start) doesn't have to go to ground. With a switch, you can send whatever coil to ground you want. The Custom coil on mine splits with an SSL-1 (7-string) for position 2, and the 59 coil splits with an SSL-5 (7-string) in position 3 (Tele wiring.) If you dig Lynch, EVH, Yngwie (yes. It sounds like a hot rodded single split/parallel), Scorps, or any classic shredders, this pickup is for YOU.

Hi Folks, First off,to the guitarist, this is some really nice playing. You are doing a great job of showing this pickup's abilities. This is really a nice pickup - prefer it over the 59 or the SH5 Custom. I have it in two guitars. Have tried the Jazz and WLH neck pickups with the 59/Custom and am not really satisfied with either one. For these neck pickups, the best I can say right now is too little or too much. Would like to stay with an Alnico V neck pickup. With the 59/Custom in the neck of a SG, what would be a good neck pick up? Any chances of making a matching neck pickup for the 59/Custom or is this a time to contact the custom shop? I'm a long time Duncan user. Thanks.
Western rider 100 Hey there, a great place to ask this question would be on our forum as there are many people there who have tried different neck pickups. www.seymourduncan.com/forum
Patrick Giles Should work but you might want to go 250K pots in case it's a bit bright. The Custom Custom on the other hand sounds great in an alder guitar and gives you a great rock tone.
Paul Roadz I'm glad you love the pickup! The guitar is a 23 year old Hamer Centaura made in Arlington Heights, Illinois (which is where I grew up). It's been stripped and refinished with a simple oil based walnut stain and a few thin coats of nitro. The stock Schaller black hardware was swapped out for authentic Hamer stamped gold Schaller hardware (which is hard to find because they are out of business).
Do you think the SD 59 Custom Hybrid bridge and the SD Sentient neck pickups would be good replacements for the SD Slash APH-2 set in a 2019 Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s? The APH-2s are just too dark and muddy. I need more punch and clarity in the bridge and definitely less mud in the neck.

Wow that's something else. How would this sound in a meranti (close to mahogany) Strat with a rosewood fingerboard? Thanks a lot.
+Tomas M I use this pickup in a mahogany body Strat-shaped guitar, and it is awesome. Very similar to the video, with maybe some more lower mids.
Great that sounds like the winner to me. One more question. Would you pick this (59' hybrid) over JB if you only had one pickup?
Personally (and this is a very personal thing), absolutely.
Really seems like I've found a winner for my pickup competition. Thanks a lot!
Love the tones here. Wondering if this pup would work well in a Charvel So Cal (alder w/ pickguard, maple fretboard, Floyd Rose)?
Patrick Giles Should work but you might want to go 250K pots in case it's a bit bright. The Custom Custom on the other hand sounds great in an alder guitar and gives you a great rock tone.
Daniel Bowlin
500k pots for maximum detail and cut with humbuckers.
I'm loving these pickups but crazy want that guitar what is it ?
Paul Roadz I'm glad you love the pickup! The guitar is a 23 year old Hamer Centaura made in Arlington Heights, Illinois (which is where I grew up). It's been stripped and refinished with a simple oil based walnut stain and a few thin coats of nitro. The stock Schaller black hardware was swapped out for authentic Hamer stamped gold Schaller hardware (which is hard to find because they are out of business).
zmb1982 Absolutely beautiful guitar man.
+zmb1982 My bro-in-law is a Luthier so I'm gonna see if he can build me one of these guitars.
does anyone know what song the solo at 6:37 is from?
That is the 1st solo from "Still Loving" You by the Scorpions... Matthias jabs is one of my favorites!
All of the varied sounds in this video from only the '59 pickup? What are the other two in that guitar?
All of the sounds are from the bridge 59/Custom Hybrid.
AMAZING WORK !!!!!
Min 3:10 MODE Buckethead ON
'Snice playing. Whiskey barrel sound!!! I would like these pups for my Strat. I hardly ever play it cuz it sounds so glunky ... (or is that glicky? )
I use this pickup in my Warmoth Strat. It sounds as good or better than the video- it is really that good!
Any thoughts if this would sound good in a PRS McCarty?
Do you think the SD 59 Custom Hybrid bridge and the SD Sentient neck pickups would be good replacements for the SD Slash APH-2 set in a 2019 Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s? The APH-2s are just too dark and muddy. I need more punch and clarity in the bridge and definitely less mud in the neck.
Hi there, I've been using this pickup for a while now because of this demo. Always been curious about the rest of the pickups in his guitar. may I know what the rest of the pickups are in the guitar he's using?
The neck is most likely a Little '59 and the middle pickup is a Duckbucker
Reminds me of the tasteful melodies Bucket head does :)
I can buy the pickups, the guitars and the amps and I will never sound like this amazing ! Incredible tone too yummy
