Seymour Duncan: '78 Model Pickups - Set

    Just imagine being able to bottle the tone and talent of the 23 year old Edward Van Halen. The same man who in 1978 caused one of the largest seismic shifts in guitar-playing history. We can't do that, of course. Well, not the talent part anyway. However Seymour Duncan's '78 pickups let us park a little closer to the tone component. The story is that EVH took a PAF to Seymour back then and requested it be wound just a little hotter and with some extra mojo to facilitate natural and artificial harmonics. Up until now recreations of that pickup have only been available via the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop. Now it's in full production and we can all try it. And I'm impressed. They not only rock the hell out of Marshall-type amps but they lend themselves to some very pretty tones when used with gentler amps like 'blackface' Fenders as well. Which is why, in this video, I've decided to lean on the frighteningly accurate amp models of my Axe-FX III to demonstrate the '78 Models' versatility. Nice one, Seymour!

    I hate any pickup with resistance above 10k…Eddie WAS all about getting overdrive and gain from the amp and not the pickup and I love that you mention driving the amp harder (I put “was” in all caps because once he went to Music Man and on through the EVH line it has been a much higher resistance). I’m about to get a ‘78 trem bucker for the bridge of my EVH Wolfgang standard since the legs are short on the ‘78; I’ll just have to round them off. This video was perfect. Thank you

    It's (unsurprisingly) difficult to find low gain/crunch examples of this pickup, so thank you for providing those. I've been on the hunt for a vintage-hot style bridge pickup for an HSS strat that will be at home in low gain scenarios but can also do EVH/Ratt/general 80s roar and this is sounding like a good option.

      @@johnsmith-ug5tpthis is an old comment, but I'd just like to throw my two cents into the ring for no reason.
      Yeah, sure. Maybe some people are genetically more apt to be better at guitar than others.
      But...be rest assured that THOUSANDS of hours went into what you're hearing.
      If you hear a really good guitarist, just know there is a special kind of love they share with their tool.
      Just my thoughts,
      There are of course prodigy guitarists (or musicians of any instrument)
      But even then, they've played for countless hours

    • @johnsmith-ug5tp
      @johnsmith-ug5tp 9 месяцев назад

      No doubt, A person that plays an instrument for hours per day loves it or they wouldn't do it. However, If you aren't born with it, you will never advance past the intermediate level. When you look at the greats like Randy, Eddie, Lukather, Page, Beck, Benson, Moore, Vai, or Brett here, and many others, doing incredible things with a guitar when they are in their late teens and early 20's, many without a single guitar lesson you cant learn that. It's a gift. @@WilhelmWilder

    This is a great vid that demonstrates the pickups versatility along with combination option when opting for the “set”. The tones you are getting both full and split are all extremely believable/useable in the applications presented. I was surprised by the great funk tones and quack you were able to get! Throw in the country grit and Hendrix type fuzz… and who wouldn’t be sold? That’s one hell of a guitar and you are one hell of a great player! Thanks for posting just put one in my old Mexican strat based from this.

    Excellent demo, as always. The '78 really hones in on that classic EVH tone. I don't want to split hairs about what Eddie did or didn't use, as he was always very cagey about his tone, but Seymour definitely wound pickups like this for him in the old days. I love the tone here. The Eddie level distortion is the most I'd ever use. Beyond that, distortion just won't work for me. This is not a pickup for chugging death metal. But if you're going for a great late 70s, early 80s EVH style tone, this pickup is perfect. It works well within that dynamic range.

    If been considering putting an SD 78' humbucker in the bridge of my Epi Insoired by Gibson Explorer. Not only for that EVH sound, but for the raw rock tone I am in love with. SD TB and SH 6 Distortion humbuckers I have in my guitars are great, but I want to tone down a bit, but not a lot. If that makes any sense. I play live and record through an Orange Super Crush half stack and various pedals.

    beautiful charvel. yeah the pickups sound amazing. i pretty much gave up on playing the pickup game decades ago one i finally tried the Duncan Custom, but anything close to that or variants of is fine. I won't generally change pickups any more, unless they are EMGS, but then, or any active, but then i usually wouldn't buy a guitar if it has them anyway. Saying that i do still have one guitar with emg 57/66tw and they are tolerable.

    W.O.W.! I don't doubt that it's only the Seymours who contribute to this beautiful and nostalgic sound of yours...well done Brett and thanks for the demo. These HBs tempt me a lot, could you please give me your opinion: 1 month ago I got an american professional 2 roasted pine stratocaster, mounted on 0.10 strings but I can't find the blues sound I expected (too used to my semi hollow) and I decided to mount 2 HBs for a rock and heavy sound a la Running With The Devil! What do you think if I chose these Seymours, could the result be similar to that of your Charvel and its Seymour 78s? Thanks Brett for your possible response, a cordial greeting🤘
    W.O.W.! Non dubito che ci siano solo i Seymour a contribuire a questo tuo bello e nostalgico sound... bravo Brett e grazie per la demo. Questi HB mi tentano molto, vorresti, gentilmente, darmi un tuo parere: 1 mese fa ho preso una stratocaster american professional 2 roasted pine, montato corde 0.10 ma non trovo il suono blues che mi aspettavo (troppo abituato alla mia semi hollow) e ho deciso di montare 2 HB per un sound rock e heavy alla Running With The Devil! Che ne pensi se scegliessi questi Seymour, il risultato potrebbe avvicinarsi a quello della tua Charvel e i suoi Seymour 78? Grazie Brett per la tua eventuale risposta, un cordiale saluto
