If you own one and haven't discovered the flaw in the machine yet you better soon before you are looking at a big repair. Pull the lint filter out and look in the opening of the machine with a flashlight... to the right. Look at the build up of lint on the evaporator that's happened in a matter of weeks. You'll likely see 4 big spots of built up lint. If you look you'll find that they line up with the clips on the pull out lint tray.
Good news is I've experimented with the clips to try to stop the lint from bypassing the filter and I think I solved it. I've found if you block fronts of the clip you can stop the problem. To test it out for yourself, you'll first have to remove the lint lumps that have already embedded themselves in the evaporator. I used a toothbrush on a stick to tease it out of the coils and pull it out.
Now, you can either try drying something again after you clean it out and you will see the lint reappear exactly where it was just after one cycle... or to just cut to the chase you can place strips of the electrical tape over the clips on the lint pull-out trap closing the slits, the top and bottom. Wash and dry your lintiest rug and you will see that NO lint makes it through. I'm going to put flexible silicone caulk in the front of the clips as a permanent fix.. that front opening seems to be the issue.

I love this machine. I been using it for almost a month and it has work better than I expected. I have throw tons of load into and bulky loads. It has done it job to the best as long you pick the right options. It also warn you when you need to clean the filter which is great because I forget all the time to do so between loads. My wife love it as well because she forget all the time to dry the cloths after washing them. This has help her so much. We 100 percent love it.

    Huge points:
    - Unit gaskets, filter, and system overall is DRY at the end. I vowed never to own a front-loader; that's changed.
    - The laundry scent isn't pumped outside and away. Wow! That's a gamechanger. I'm outside and all I would smell is neighbor's dryers pumped scent up and down the street. Makes sense NOT to use dryer scented products, when it already captures the scent from the detergent.
    - Static is low. Why try to fix something with add-on products when the problem is gone.
    - Reverse tumbling. Never even heard of this. Biggest problem I've had for years is twisted up clothes in the dry. This is a winner feature.

Ken and Steve, this was another GREAT interview that was extremely informative and interesting. It really seems like GE has thought things through in a wholistic, timeless manner. If the machine performs as advertised, I believe it will be a complete game-changer. In other words, I believe this product could have an iPhone effect on the market, effectively obsoleting all side-by-side washer and dryer setups in the same way the iPhone obsoleted all flip phones and dumb phones that existed before it. Also, for a single person or couple without kids, it seems like it would be great, and for larger families if they purchase 2 of the all-in-one machines it will be like having a perfect laundromat in your home, while taking up no more room than a traditional side-by-side setup. Also, Ken, I think it would be a great idea if customers have more questions if they could post them here and have you answer them, thus creating a perfect friction-free feedback loop. Once again, thanks so much for such a thoughtful and impressive product and interview series.

Response to question 15: I have one of these and the Gasket is absolutely NOT dry after a wash/dry cycle. I'm not hitting the 18lb limit with my loads, but I'm not around the 10lb "suggested for 2 hour per load size" either.
Other issues: I've also noticed hair caught in the gasket - 2 adults both long hair. I've also noted that when doing a set of sheets, they regularly get tangled into a ball, and the clothes we pull out seem to be more prone to wrinkles than my previous washer/dryer combo. Wish there was something I could do about these issues.

Thank you Steve and Ken for doing these interviews. I was sold on this machine off of part 1 and this one just made my decision even easier. I ordered ours back on 7/11 from Costco and just received word that GE is back ordered on this unit till 9/13. It's a lengthy wait but I believe it will be worth it. I'm curious if the demand for the unit is the cause of the delay or they may have made manufacturing changes and pushed orders out accordingly? Either way I seriously can't wait to start using this machine!

Nice to see someone with ‘GE Representative’ answering questions about this product.
    The video is fairly old now and the Ultrafast has some time on purchases and feedback. A few things I would like to have answered is;
    1) Seen many video concerned about ‘lint’ buildup on the condenser fins, seems like the lint trap is not capturing it all and some it getting around the filters. In those videos they are concerns of damage to the condenser and heat pump over time with the continued lint build up. Owners have had lint buildup even cleaning the filter after each load. Some have made suggestions of placing HI-Temp Electrical tape on the backside where the black filter is located or even using some ‘liquid gasket’ to make a better seal. Supposedly there are types that don’t bond to the pieces and would be removable.
    2) (waiting on this answer from GE, does not seem to respond promptly). If using only during summer months at a summer home in which the house is closed down with water shut off, everything is drained and RV Anti-Freeze is used to prevent freezing of lines etc, well below freezing during winter months. What would be the best maintenance and winter conditioning procedure of the Ultrafast to be performed to ensure nothing is damaged while gone?
The Ultrafast could be a nice solution for the summer home, however lot of money if we have damage and a warranty claim is denied due to improper winter conditioning.
Thank you for your consideration of the topic!

From sunny SC, I was excited when Lowes delivered our (first) unit August 10 but it arrived damaged. Clearly fork truck forks had penetrated the carton and the delivery driver had photographed the damage to protect themselves when they picked it up. Removing the carton exposed the rear cabinet had been pierced. The second attempt to deliver ended in a violent, noisy installation with spin cycle vibration after Lowes delivery crew had left. Crew installed pedestal and did not remove shipping sleeves (bolts were removed and discarded). They also did not remove the horizontal back braces even though instructions show them removed. They removed the feet from the washer and discarded them though instruction say to keep them installed. They also discarded drain hose bracket and wire tie and fished drain hose 30” into my stand pipe causing siphoning. Since this unit failed due to vibration and had to be returned, a third attempt ended in a unit arriving with no pedestal so it was returned. A fourth unit arrived Friday with pedestal and it had hidden damage so could not be installed. Our fifth unit arrives tomorrow. I wish Yale Appliance had a facility in Charlotte! Lowes must have huge profit margins if they can throw new units out there, one after another, hoping they will stick, rather than training their third party delivery and installation partners. GE product manager might have gotten the revolutionary design right but none of that matters with untrained service and delivery technicians that make the experience so painful it is almost unbelievable!

This machine has changed the way I do laundry, I won’t go back to separate machines. I’m still really surprised at how great it is. Everything is fresh and fluffy and it never feels like I’m doing laundry anymore. Very little lint compared to my traditional set, and it’s just as easy to clean the lint trap as any dryer I’ve had. I’ve always had top of the line top load washers and this cleans better than any of them.
My gasket still looks brand new, no stains. I’ve always wiped down my top load washers, I like that quick wipe down often as opposed to cleaning a huge amount of grime and soap. I follow my same cleaning pattern but now I just keep sanitizing wipes next to the machine and wipe the gasket quickly every few loads. Never had a front load washer before so I was apprehensive, but this is so much easier to quickly wipe than a top loader. We have long hair and pets, not a problem at all. I do keep a small cotton washcloth handy in case the water spout drips (rarely and only when I get a load right when it finishes), takes two seconds to dab water if needed and it’s far easier than my old top loader where you could spill soap on top and have pet hair glued to it and drag your clean wet laundry through it if you didn’t notice it.
In a future model I’d really like a dedicated light button, the ability to shut the door and select my cycle from the app later (like I could on my last whirlpool smart washer).

Very interesting product!! We are considering this for a summer lake house, however we have sand point well for water which does have iron in the water. The water softener ‘tank’ (no salt pellets storage container) which is replacement monthly helps with this iron and water hardness. However, would you recommend any additional water filtering with use of this model? Appreciate the input on the subject, thank you!!

I measured the power and used about 1.35kWh for a very full load with towels on ecocool and extra heavy soil. That took about 2.5 hours. I saw someone else who claimed 1.25kWh, but maybe for a easier load. Agree with static charge is not a problem. I think the dryer is not as quiet as my previous Samsung, but it is certainly not a problem. To me the dryer is like the washer on spin.

I have a question if they are still open. I have an LG front load (3770). It can get the soap into the clothes to wash them, but it doesn't get the soap out effectively. There isn't enough water to get the job done. After a load, if I test a t-shirt in the sink by doing a hand rinse, the sink suds up. To solve for this, I was washing each load twice, one load with soap, and the second time with extra rinses with no soap. After that, I learned thru the web I could adjust the water level with a little valve inside the cover. It did okay, lots of water sloshing around in there and the "suds test" in the sink now shows no sudsing.
It's an awful lot to go thru to get a wash that is proper.
Other than a hack, or using a pail of water to add water to this machine, does it still use a abnormally low amount of water and/or is there a way other than a pail to get the right amount of water in this machine? I am tired of supporting an industry that refuses to hear the desires of the people and wants to do things their way?

  • @edwardlouie
    @edwardlouie 5 месяцев назад

I recommend storing a vacuum plugged in and ready to use next to this unit. To make it easy to vacuum the lint filter. Vacuuming the lint filter will remove the very fine particles from the filter, something that won't be done if the large lint was only removed by hand from the filter.
Another feature GE should advertise is that this unit's 120v only power requirement for washer + dryer could free up the 240v dryer plug. That freed up 240v circuit is extremely useful for a number of things. It could be repurposed to power a heat pump water heater in a home that had a gas water heater, or a level 2 electric vehicle charger in a home that is looking to upgrade from level 1 electric vehicle charging or to purchase an EV.

Can you ask the engineer what the heck design this is? He invented it and it’s great the two loads we did but the installers say the pedestal doesn’t fit on it so It’s not saving me much space. GE could do better with their advertisement on this. They have a person in space boots doing a small load and looking smug, and it’s not really relatable or demonstrable. The disconnect between showing a single person doing small laundry and the sales pitch for this doing a king size comforter and handling every day laundry and pet hair is strange. Seems like a lot of companies have forgotten that most of us are regular people with busy and hectic lives that want an appliance to do more of the work for us. From comments I’ve seen on videos, people with 4-8 people/kids/pets are apprehensive that this can handle their laundry schedule. Also most seem to be hooked on this idea of babysitting their washer and dryer all day Saturday. I’ll tell you, I am praying this machine frees me from having to even think about laundry ever again.
I really liked hearing all of these questions answered, it is more helpful than GE’s website/ads. I’m about to take delivery of mine and really looking forward to the simplicity yet still a bit apprehensive as I always go for the time tested appliances.

They had engineers remote into the machine and they said they saw error codes for the accelerometer. They shipped a new board that should be installed tomorrow. Also, software version shows 0.0.0.0. No updates available. Engineers say that should be fixed with new part. TBD.

    Questions for part 3:
When is GE going international, specifically Thailand? (I'm planning to move to Thailand and be based there. I want this GE UltraFast Combo, but I'd have to import it. Why is there no GE appliances in Thailand? Having something this amazing, you should go international with it before other companies copy you! I have the 1st gen (PFW850 w/ matching dryer) Ultrafresh and am heavily considering this model. I’m very happy with my current set overall, but do have a few small issues. My main problem is that the dispenser tray is a frequent problem area for some type of blackish mold or mildew to the point that I need to remove, disassemble, and thoroughly clean the whole tray assembly every few months. Not fun. To be fair, the Ultrafresh system otherwise fully delivers on the promise of keeping the unit dry and free of smells. That being said, I’m curious if GE has addressed this, or if perhaps I’m somehow an isolated case.
Secondly, I often use the 20 minute steam assisted wrinkle release cycle. It’s extremely effective even on thicker heavily wrinkled garments. I can only imagine the lower temperature of this unit means the wrinkle release cycle is less effective and/or takes significantly longer?
My smallest complaint is the polycarbonate window (vs glass on the LG Washtower for instance) that of course will dull over time as it scratches very easily. I assume this is still the same on the new unit?
Lastly, I wonder how much luck I’d even have trying to sell my pair without having to give them away! I’ve never tried to sell a used appliance.
    Thanks for any insight!

    I have two more...
If there is no water heater, does that mean you can only wash in cold water?
For someone who doesn't do a lot of laundry, if the self dispense tray is used for detergent and it's not used up in say 3 or 4 months, will it get hard and stick in the tray or does it stay in its liquid form the entire time?

Greetings thanks for the video. I want to buy this unit but they’re saying that there’s a problem with the lint trap or the filter I see there’s an hack by one of the RUclipsrs on RUclips. I’m hoping GE knows there’s a problem with this filter if so, are they preparing to maybe make a gasket to send out to everybody or just update the whole filter I thought maybe you might know. Thanks again hope to hear from you.

I think you should have included the heater for sanitization, and give us the choice. Assuming by Oxy you mean Oxyclean, if I suddenly need to sanitize something, I don’t want to have go running to the store to by a bottle of Oxyclean, which then has to take up space on my shelf. In my case, it’s not a dealbreaker breaker since I don’t sanitize very often. But I could see that this would be a consideration if not a pain for someone that has to wash a lot of diapers for example. Sanitization with heat is very straightforward, very simple and very KISS. It should be a baseline feature of the design.

I've had my unit for a couple weeks and done maybe 10 loads so far, but unfortunately that is not the case at all for me. Steve, please clarify for me. I have watched many videos on this product and was seriously considering a purchase (whenever they become available in B.C., Canada) but I am very concerned about your CEO's comments on all in one units published on a Wirecutter review of these units:
Steve Sheinkopf, owner and CEO of Yale Appliance in Boston and one of the industry’s most prolific bloggers put it bluntly: “I hate these things,” he told us. “It’s really a product that should not be on the market. We do everything in our power not to sell them.”
The problem, Sheinkopf said, is that the repair rate is sky high-over 70 percent within the first year, according to his service department’s records. “They seem to be the most repair-prone products we sell.”

I bought this exact system and have yet to receive one that isn’t damaged. Not sure if the system was damaged during transit or manufacturing. The transmissions and motor broke on the first empty test wash ran by the installer to check for leaks. It basically sounds like wrenches banging around inside the system when it tries to spin up. It caused the gasket to ripple on itself and the drum falls out of the horizontal axis. It created enough heat that when I open the door after the test completed light smoke puffs out of the drum with a toxic chemical smell from the drum. This all happened within 2hrs post install. If the damage is due to the installer then GE should educate installers on how to install the system properly. If it is a manufacturing issue then GE needs better controls and systematic testing on the production line.
