  • Now that we know the basics regarding normal cardiac function, let's look at some things that can go wrong, and relevant pharmacological solutions. Arrhythmias refer to a deviation from normal heart rhythm. This includes atrial fibrillation, and many other phenomena. There are four classes of drugs that deal with such issues according to the Vaughan-Williams classification, let's learn about them now!

Thanks for doing this. I was just diagnosed with Atrial Flutter and subsequent Congestive Heart Failure. I'm taking a number of medicines that slow the heart rate, decrease blood pressure, and thin the blood. Plus an Ace II inhibitor. In two weeks I get cardioverted to hopefully eliminate the atrial flutter. Then its on to figure out what damage has been done to my heart. Just for reference, early onset of Congestive Heart Failure has the following symptoms. 1.) Difficulty breathing when you are horizontal. 2.) Significant water retention. I've lost 32 pounds (about 15%) since visiting the hospital.(2 weeks ago). mostly in the form of diuretic induced peeing. 3.) coughing up bubble infused mucous periodically. (thankfully a whitish color) A week after first going to the hospital my blood pressure and heart rate have been lowered to more normal values, and my weight remains stable. Thank you for this explanation. The docs tend to give a pretty basic explanation. And I thought I had some allergy, or RSV. I'm done with self-diagnosis.
