As someone who collects action figures, I knew they weren't going to make any money going to a reseller. They are never going to give near full price because they need to turn a profit on what they buy. Like Connor said, you could make a profit by selling to other collectors if you're willing to deal with all that comes with doing that.

100% this. The more middle men there are the less you'll get because they need to take a cut. It goes the same for selling used video games or trading cards. I once talked to my local card store about selling some of my old MTG cards. They literally quoted me for 30% of the online price in cash and 50% in trade-in. I said a big 'nope' to that, went online, listed it myself, and got 80-ish% of the online value because, of course, Ebay and sites like that ALSO take a cut.

    • @sashei9764
      @sashei9764 9 месяцев назад +15

      That's not entirely true.
It just doesn't work if you walk cluelessly into an arcade and throw some money at some machines.
It's important to know which figures are worth what before playing, so you can decide to play a machine based on the value of the figure rather than the assumed popularity.
Also you'd want to visit several arcades, and avoid the major ones (SEGA/Taito).
And you'd probably want to sell them to resellers in Akihabara rather than Shinjuku, as they generally offer a higher price.
Once you got the flow going its actually fairly easy to make profit - if it wasn't you wouldn't see so many Japanese people doing it. Though you won't get rich

35:23 it’s basic pawn shop rules that are pretty global. Basically, the shop needs to keep record of your ID just in case you are selling something that belongs to someone else. If that were to happen, then they can press charges on the thief and give back the item to the rightful owner.

I moved to Japan 8 years ago and this was my first job when I came here lol
you gotta know what the figures are worth though, so being a collector already helped a lot but also being good at the game.
I got really well known in my area at the sega and namco bc I would go in daily and win huge bags of stuff and I would win many in 1-2 tries. The sega wasn't really cool about it. The staff would follow me around and peak around machines and watch me etc. They also would use their little mic and then I would see them opening up the machines and mesing with the controls to weaken the claws etc.
I would have to rent a locker to put all of the stuff in to not immedietely get spoted and even then eventually they put up signs on all the machines saying 1 prize per machine bc I would legit clean them out bc its so easy lol
On the flip side the Namco was great and they used me as free advertising basically. They would announce when I came bc all the staff knew me. They would say on the loud speaker " The american pro has returned " etc and people would follow me around and watch and always tell me how hard it was and i'm like Idk about that I find it easy lol
Some people would ask for help or I would even watch people and give them tips on how to get the item in 1-2 tries etc. each machine has different tricks but you get really used to it after awhile.
Some places are scams tho. So I would just do 1 coin to test the claw strength and in lots of cases it was fine and I would even get the item on the first try but if it was weak I would move to another machine or shop if need be
when you are winning figures, roombas, towels, games, gaming systems, ipods , plushies etc it add up especially when you are winning them for very little money.
Even just the figures alone. In about a month I had a room in the apartment stacked to the point of where you could barely walk in the door and if you kjnow which figures to go after they sell for good money. Especially if you sell to people in the US.
Of course there is a lot of basic figs that are worth nothing. Just gotta know which ones to go after / what sells for what. I would also have a limit of how many times I would try for something based on how much I knew I could sell it for.

Tips for selling crane game figures:
    Get popular characters
Get ones with less stock availability (rarer)
Look up which colour variant is more popular
Dont damage boxes and dont get ones without box
    Q-posket sell for less
Tbh as a figure collector I could guess a lot of these (q-poskets arent that popular, box damage, etc) just from experience

I could be mistaken, but these shops also exist at Pachinko Parlors to avoid some gambling laws: ball-bearings for plushies for back-shop cash. If our heroes didn't travel far from the UFO center, the values would be a little less than if they went to a distant collector shop, or if they used an online collector marketplace perhaps. Well I mean in the end, it was quite expected that they wouldn't make more than they spent. They usually are sold for half the price and, since it sometimes has scamming methods so as to higher the price gained from selling them then you give the person who actually bought it, you end up with less than half of what you spent. Damage, popularity, rarity, quality, and scamming processes impact the whole money gained.
A way to gain more money than you spent is selling it online, or auctioning, because of the popularity of the person selling them as well as that of the figurine itself. It gives more demand and sells for more.

fun fact key master and its alternatives are almost always rigged with drift. for keymaster you can tell when its ready for a payout when the key hits the bottom of the lock instead of the top. unless its the green keyhole (where all the holes are the same size) then those ones are skill based by default (though at least here in the west they kick you out if you win them too much), also watch out for key masters with a notch at the bottom of the key because those are fake keys that will always hit the bottom and never win. the hand one I dont know exactly but im pretty sure it drifts to the right a bit more.

While it's true you could potentially make more selling overseas, you also have to figure in shipping costs. A lot of the figures with free shipping from Japan usually have the shipping factored in. Take shipping costs out and you'd probably get something closer to what it sells for in Japan
Also, 20-40 dollar figures are colloquially known as "prize" figures exactly because they're the types of figures that go into these games. You wont ever find really expensive figures in games because those figures tend to be more articulate and fragile. Not to mention there's a lot more concern with box condition (and you don't want a crane claw, or it being dropped scuffing it up)
I think ultimately when it comes to what sells, you really have to think about what you'd want. Just seeing something popular and hoping people into it will be interested is a bad strategy. Not that I really think it's possible to make money (because they people you're selling it to will undervalue it to make profits on too) They might give you some extra for one item, but that's more to balance out the really low amount they give for other stuff.
