What is femoral head ostectomy (FHO) surgery?

Interview with Dr. Reza Moazzen of Aliso Viejo Animal Hospital about Femoral head ostectomy (FHO) surgical procedure.
My 4 year old Pug, Gus was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and would require surgery to relieve the pain he was experiencing.
Femoral head ostectomy (FHO) surgery was a great alternative option compared to surgery that would require implanting hardware.
FHO surgical procedure removes the head and neck of the femur, or thighbone, to restore pain-free mobility to a diseased or damaged hip. FHO can be performed on dogs and cats of almost any age.
The goal of FHO is to eliminate bone-on-bone contact of the hip. The surgery can cost between $1,200 and $2,500 or more, depending on the dog's size, age, and the severity of their hip dysplasia. Gus’ surgery was approximately $4,500 per hip. Each hip was done about 8 weeks apart.
