Great comparison for those who want to make an informed decision. It's also cool that you had a friend to rollerskate next to you, for an easier comparison.

A good desperate stopping technique is to get low then drop to a seated position. A bad desperate stopping technique is crashing into something or trying to grab something while your legs slide out from under you.

Also: rollerskates are a bit safer for people whose knees dislocate easily. The teetering side to side on inline skates when trying to find your balance can definitely cause a kneecap to dislocate (especially if you have damaged ligaments). Roller skates put much less stress on your ligaments so they are a great option for those of us who want to skate in spite of bad knees!

I don't know what happened but the next summer all the sales disappeared and no kid was playing on them anymore. I have done both and each one has its own advantages and disadvantages…
Rollerblades are faster and your center of balance is in the center/back of your foot because of the flat design, making it easier to go side to side for speed.
Roller skates / quads are slower but easier to balance on, and it’s much easier to turn in quads which is great for dancing… however, I do figure skate (on ice) and I’ve gotten so used to that side to side type of balance that I find it easier to balance on rollerblades now because I can move my foot side to side MUCH easier which ultimately gives me more control and allows me to balance for longer.
I prefer rollerblades most of the time, but for the chill days or around the house I prefer quads

I used to rollerblade all the time when I was a kid. I was teaching myself to go backwards in the driveway when Zena, our Jack Russell Terrier, ran behind me and I fell, breaking my left wrist, and spraining my right. I never really started skating again, but I wish I had! I’m 35 and pregnant right now, so I definitely shouldn’t try to start again now, but after I have our daughter I might try to pick it up again. I loved the freedom I felt while skating and want to have that again. My husband also used to rollerblade, so maybe we can make it a family thing!

If you want to cover pretty long distances, the lower cuff models, sometimes called marathon skates, with 3_5 80-110mm wheels are great. True Speedskates, in my experience, are only good if you truly skate often enough so your ankles get and stay strong. Fit also needs to be tighter and less cushy. Both will also require more strength for the same brake pressure ( if you use a heel brake pad)

    • @queeng508
      @queeng508 Год назад +2

it could be related to the tightness of the screw that regulates the looseness of the wheels or to the material of the wheels (depending on the surface you skate on you will use different wheels. generally if you dont skate on competition rings you will need wheels made of a softer rubber made to skate on concrete/streets, so that they can absorb a bit of the unevenness of the floor. if these are not the problems, it could be simply that your legs have yet to develop the strength to push yourself and the skates forward so you would only need to practice more. hope this helps :)

      They work differently.
To glide on roller skates, you should push side to side in a V shape

      Roller skates - V shape

Was skating outdoor on inlines for 10 years almost every day and had a lot of fun, but about 2½ years ago I starded to play roller derby and I'm having so much more fun on quads. I love doing little foot work stuff that I just can't do on inlines. And the toe stops, they are the most fun thing about quads imo bc you can do so much with them. I also feel more secure going fast on quads because I can just turn around and break on my toe stops, inlines are more limited for high speed breaking, especially on bad asphalt, so I never felt like I could go max speed on them. I also found the inlines I could get at my local sports store to be very fragile, they'd hold up at max 2 years before breaking in a way that wasn't fixable. My first quads now broke as well (rip R3s) but that was to be expected from playing roller derby with that setup. My new ones are great and I'm looking into getting a park skating setup bc I don't like using my derby skates for both (and having to put on and take off slide blocks every time I go to the skate park is kind of annoying imo)
Anyway, both are great, but I have a lot more fun with quads (roller skates)

I’ve never really tried roller blades before? I just stick with the skates that I have and I self taught my self from a close friend:) they are easier to get a hang on I think? Because roller baldes you really have to get a good balance on. Although I love skates I’ve never really learnt how to spin on them which is sad because it seems fun 😂

I was given a pair of "inlines"(blades, no idea why we called them inlines lol) when I was 6-7 and my gosh I could not figure out how to comfortably go more than a few feet without losing balance. Started rollerskating at a nearby rink (which has sadly closed) and it just worked so much better for me. I've tried both again recently and blades still don't work for me. I don't think they fit right though, the support was clearly supposed to be there but my ankles just wobbled inside them. So it's skates every time for me, but who knows, maybe I'll pick it up eventually.

Their actual names are “inline skates” not rollerblades. Rollerblade is a company that produces good quality inline skates and was very popular back in the day. We probably just refer to all inline skates as rollerblades because everyone was probably buying from rollerblade before

Rollerblades are also good for practicing snow skiing and ice skating.
I highly recommend doing a deep dive into rollerblades. They have a lot of similarities to roller skating but they’re also very different.
For example, you can actually “rocker” most rollerblades so that you can carve a lot tighter. There’s just so many little things like that.

I found that buying a gummier wheel made my skates much smoother because they absorb cracks and terrain much better for trail skating! Definitely look into your wheels. A hard wheel would be good for indoor skating/roller rink but not great for outdoors

For some reason I’ve always done blades ever since I tried them because I found it hard to balance on the other ones. Guess I’m not good with front to back balance but fine at left and right ? Wonder if that could be the reason. Anyways I would fall a ton and it hurt and the switch made a huge difference for me, even though I’m a casual skater I feel super comfy on the blades !

I used to go to the skating rink every weekend from Friday-Sunday as a pre-teen. I LIVED for the rink. I started on the quads and I just couldn't find my balance so i was constantly falling. I couldn't really afford the extra 3 dollars for the blades because I didnt want to spend the extra money to try them and risk not liking them cause then my whole night would have been ruined, so i just didnt try them for the longest time. Then one day my sisters friend let me try her blades. They were half a size too big but the moment I stepped onto the floor, I new that they were the Skates for me. I switched to blades right away after that and have never used quads since. Quads are a nice introduction to skating, especially for kids but if you're more into speed and have odd ankles like myself, blades are the way to go. I also find tricks to be a lot easier on blades because the quads contradict each other. Switching feet is weird because they are wide and constantly hit the floor. At least for me. Everyone's experiences are different because my sister LIVED for the quads lol.
Side note: you said that the quads are more flowy and I see so many people flow so gracefully on them and it just looks so beautiful, but for me the blades are more flowy. I love doing tricks on them. I want to like the quads but I think my brain is just more geared to the blades. I'm also blind in one eye so maybe that has something to do with why the blades are weird for me.
