- Today we get to roller skate inside an abandoned mall! This was very creepy mall skating video because I have never been to this mall and it was almost completely empty. Do not try this at your mall please, let me do it so you don't have to! I hope you guys enjoy this one and share it to someone who you think might like it, will I get kicked or roll away from the cops unschathed?
Also gigantic shout out to "Its ya boy Donte" for all the music provided in this video please go support him!

JESUS LOVES YOU SO MUCH MORE THEN YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE
Gfys. Idk
Abandoned malls should definitely be repurposed as skating mazes. Also "Please don't try this at home" .....of course, you go to the mall you silly ;-).
😭😭😭
It’d be amazing if they could convert some of those spaces into affordable housing. These spaces could be repurposed for some real good. I love the idea of skating mazes being PART of that too 🥹
Yes or they should add some Ramps
Mall skating should def be a thing.
Yeah that’s so goofy ahhh
Mall floors always look so gloriously smooth. I get why skating is banned, but man, when it's that quiet and empty it just looks like it was built for it.
That’s not abandoned, abandoned means forgotten, left behind,if there were 11 people and stores open,How is it abandoned? Please have a point.
@@EnzokkokooVr A point?... I only called it quiet and empty. Picking my comment to flip out about the definition of abandoned on is a mighty weird choice.
Its kinda sad seeing malls die. The convenience of being able to buy anything online from home is fantastic, but something about the feeling you get when you shop at a mall is so magical. It's more like a hangout spot that happens to have stores. I will miss them :(
in north america they might by dying, but in Europe I'm pretty sure they're actually growing. probably has something to do with the car reliance here :p
Meanwhile me in Minnesota chilling with the mall of America at my fingertips
@@DishonorableMentions452yeah, that’s so cool. I would love to visit the Mall Of America someday.
@@Yams-Hams7734 you should! It's really cool
This totally gives vibes of "skating in the backrooms" or something like that
How?
Finally someone thought of the same idea!!!
prolly the vibes it gives in there
(oof i realised this reply was a yr ago)
Its crazy seeing a mall, that's still open, but so damn empty.
Ya
I remember being here since I was a child, and the place has always been eerily empty like that. The Macy’s closes later than the mall, and it looks like a liminal space.
In the 90s it was definitely not empty! This was a great mall. It had so many popular stores! It’s wild that it’s so empty now.
@@viniceiacarter461 So if you guys are wondering what happened to the mall it seems the primary problem is 3 of its 4 anchor stores closed. The 4 anchor stores were Sears, JCPenny, Macy’s, and Lord & Taylor.
Anchor stores are exactly what they say, they’re responsible for attracting the majority of the customers to the mall. Ppl go to shop at them specifically then kinda wonder out into the mall because they’re already there. It was kinda just unfortunate that 3 of them were from companies going under and closing retail locations. Macys closed in 2023 and with that the mall closed for good shortly after.
The first time I got kicked out of the mall was in 1997, and it was for skating in the mall with a friend and then running from security for a while. My only suggestion for skating where you aren't supposed to, is make sure you're good on your skates before trying it. Runing from security is inevitable, it will happen; but that's the fun part in my experience. Enjoyed your vid man, that mall is somethin else!!
I used to play gigs at a cajun restaurant upstairs every Friday. Pre pandemic. It's wild seeing this mall so empty. Leaving dc for good next week. Would have loved to meet you. Love how respectful you are.
Keep rolling!
Yeah it was surreal being there in person, but hey we still have time, maybe I will meet you one day and thank you so much 🙏🏼
I’ve recently got back into skating after 14 year gap. I love how smooth you transition from skating forwards and backwards throughout, something I’m definitely still working on.
It’s the first video I’ve come across of yours, great content.
I wish they had skating areas that were like this abandoned mall
Great video! It's surreal to see two things that haven't existed since the 90's/early 2000's (rollerblades and malls) in the modern day, but the mall is empty.
This video would have been a whole different thing 20-30 years ago. Still, it got me to dust off my old skates and spend a few hours on the bike path. Just as fun as I remember it.
I grew up going to this mall and it’s been steadily declining for at least 7 years. The shoe stores, bath and body works, macys, and restaurants have been there since I was a kid. Everything else is relatively new (like the lady whose been there since 2019). If you haven’t tried going to Washingtonian Center (also known as Rio) you might enjoy skating there. It’s a large outlet (just don’t go on Friday’s/weekends to avoid heavy foot traffic !) thanks for the video :))) love your skating!
Believe it or not, this mall used to be one of the best in the area. I used to come here pretty much every weekend and it was packed even back in 2018. It's sad how much it's deteriorated and how many stores have closed part of the reason is because a lot of crime in the area. Plus I'm sure the pandemic did not help as well.
I acknowledge I am one of your many subscribers who think it's funny when you get kicked out of a mall or any place where skating is not allowed! Keep up the good videos, you have of the best skating channels here on YT!
Haha well I appreciate it 😂🦑
@@_marlene that’s a good way of looking at it 😆 thanks Billie 🦑😁
Bro your skating was so smooth from 6:45 to 7:15 you looked like a ps5 video game character. It was amazing.
You say to not skate in malls ourselves but here in the UK trespassing is not a crime as it's extremely hard to govern, malls are also classed as "public" (because anyone can come and go as they please and it's an big open area with parks and such) so if security tells you to leave because your skating just let them call the police because it's not against the law to skate in public so they can't do anything.
I wish I was this guy, just skating around in places and just being care free
This mall opened in 1978, and thrived until around 2005-2010 when it rather quickly started to decline. They lost Penny's, then Lord and Taylor, then Sears. You can't survive as a small shop in a big place with no anchor store traffic. One anchor doesn't move people from end to end, past the little shops. We skated through yesterday, but got tossed. We had a good strategy, though, that worked because I knew where security was located, and what parts would be busy. So we made it through the entire mall before being thrown out.
So if you guys are wondering what happened to the mall it seems the primary problem is 3 of its 4 anchor stores closed.
I used to get kicked out of this mall skating around it about 15yrs ago. Thanks for the video it really brought back some memories.
I really liked this video. There is something about shopping malls when they are abandoned. Zombie apocalypse vibes, but also just seeing something so busy so empty. Imagine what it would be like to be able live in a place like that.
This mall use to be packed pre 2006 …. Some many people from the area would go to this mall …… I remember working nearby in 2013 but I never went in mall because it was already looking like a bit of a ghost town but this is crazy
Reminds me when I was vacationing in Myrtle Beach back in 2018. My bro-in-law wanted to check out this retro arcade over at Myrtle Beach Mall, and you could already start to see the slow decline of stores in that mall. I can only imagine how it might look like now.
sad sight to see, skate through more abandoned stuff!
I just gotta say, I hope you never change your intro... it's ICONIC. Also, this mall skating thing you've made a straight up trend on your channel is awesome. You're awesome.
Imagine how expensive it is to plan, build and then keep such a huge mall running, how much rent must have cost retailers, and it was still worth it for them, they still made money.
Now imagine you own all malls not only in the US but in half of the world, and you don't even have to build all these huge expensive malls but still take a 6 - 45% from selling in your store.
That's Amazon, and that's why Bezos can build his p*nis rocket just for fun. Now imagine having all that money, saving a ton by not having to build all these huge malls etc. but still treating your employees like sh*t, paying them badly, and steal the best performing products from the people that sell in your store, and sell them at a loss yourself until the original product creator goes out of business to then raise the price again.
Thats crazy I use to go there with my mom when I was younger . its so weird to see it so dead , I use to love going there . this video made me feel old and young . love your videos man keep em coming
Amazon and online shopping is the reason for empty and abandoned malls. It’s depressing… but it’s the small businesses that have closed that really upsets me
This reminds me of the mall we have in our town 😂
It used to be lively, but then the town's government wanted to renovate and spruce it up. It became too expensive for a lot of stores to return to their spots so now, years later, a lot of spaces still haven't been filled. Super sad to see.
They should make abandoned malls into livable apartments.
I'm disabled, hereditary lung disease called Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Defiency, basically hereditary COPD. Just say that so people learn about it. I have dreams about skating, absolutely loved it. We would get the boots with metal wheels and wear them out in a summer. Then got skating rink skates. Then the skates you could use anywhere. I still dream of skating!
reminds me of the oldest view by kane pixels. i was scared that something was gonna pop up out of nowhere because that guy made me terrified of abandoned malls. but this is comforting to watch, in a way
Such a cool mall, I love the strange shapes they used for the light cut outs in the ceiling. I could only imagine that place in its heyday.
Yeah, ever since the Forest Lake Inhabited mall opened up next door, this place really started showing its age.
Dope video, dude.
Great video.... I was watching one of your older videos titled Whoa and I really like that style, it really shows off your editing skills. You should do another one like that if you have time.
Definitely, I remember filming that one it was a ton of fun thank you! 🦑
@@Skating_Squid can you pin the link to that video? Missed it
Great, two of my passions together, liminal spaces and skating
Its so great how quiet it is love it this defentley a mall skate to the fullest!!!!
I just found your channel and your videos are so awesome! They’re very nice to watch when feeling overwhelmed. 👍🏾
Glad you like them, thank you so much!
up to touching the machines in the "time out zone" this would be a great horror film opener lol
It looks so nice to skate in.. wish we had places like this in Ireland..
Man I used to work at that Sears in the mall back in 1982. In fact went shopping at the JC Pennies just before the Pandemic when I was visiting my parents in the area. Amazing to see it so empty
Yoooo how smart would it be to straight up sell those empty stores as condo style houses? That would be sickkk!
One of your best vids Ari, congrats on 30k, that's amazing
Thank you! 🙏🏼
how sad--I used to go to this mall when I was a kid! It used to be very popular and had tons of people. At one point in the 80s, it even had an indoor ice rink! The last time I was there was around 2011 and it was definitely much less populated but not anywhere near this kind of emptiness. i just read something that says it's closing down in March 2023 and going to be demolished for a new development.
Dude your vids are amazing your underwater channel needs a lot more of an audience I love watching and chilling to your vids
I live near a similarly empty mall, but it's much smaller. Absolutely creepy.
another comment, i just found your channel as i'm getting into rollerblading after a few years of not doing it consistently. Getting back into it good while i'm still young, helps having someone to be inspiration. Subscribed super quick
Awe thank you so much I really appreciate that, I’m glad you got back into skating!
Wicked bunny what did that kid say
Just subscribed!! Keep posting! Love the content!! Just started skating again and love seeing these!! You are amazing!
Thank you! and thats awesome to hear you're back into it!
Wow, I grew up around lake forest mall when it was booming! As kids we’d eat in the food court and play on the little frog/ pond play area. I moved to Frederick and haven’t been there for years. I had no idea it was like this now! That’s wild.
It would be fun to skate and dance here while listening to music, although in some areas there’s no lighting which makes it kinda creepy 😅
Damn I can actually feel how smooth that must feel under his wheels .. damn and he looks smooth doing it. I might try picking it back up. I always have a reoccurring dream I’m rollerblading in cool ass spots.
Wow, great place to skate, but it felt a little creepy with the music playing and so many shops closed.
Man…. Wow I’m lived in that area prior to the pandemic and it sad seeing that mall like that. It uses to be very popular. I have a lot of good memories going to that mall.
Crazy clicking to see the mall I grew up in. I don't live far, would be nice to skate there. I believe 400+ homes are set to be built there with about 50K sq ft of retail space. The food court was a movie theater when I was a kid!
Grew up going to this mall like every weekend. Kinda eerie to see it in this state now.
era has changed.
paradime has changed.
thats so good!
Nice! Keep up the good work, Squid!
Reminds me of Meadows Mall a little bit. Malls really are a playground for skaters :p
woa that crazy third person effect is crazy cool man, nice
Yes thats how i came across your page and i just picked up skating and I learned alot just from watching you
YO! This is crazy! I went there as a kid, but after they removed the big playground, I remember less and less people coming.
mans chopping it up mad style, keep up the good work
This look so fun..just the large smooth surface area and freedom!
No because this is my dream!! The floors are so smooth and look so nice to skate on :’)
This reminds me of Newpark Mall in Newark, California. Some malls are just dying
This mall was literally like the it place were everyone used to hangout and go on the weekend, kinda sad to see it deserted, great to skate tho. I’ve skated there quite a few times but miss the livelihood honestly :(
I love your videos, man. You're a really good skater and you've inspired me to want to skate after having not done it for ~15 years. Do you have any entry level skate recommendations? I went to dicks sporting goods but all the skates seemed to have terrible wheel bearings.
Awe thank you and yeah I actually made a buying guide video here’s a link. The dsg skates are pretty bad, I like skates with a hard shell boot because they will last much longer. Let me know if you have any more questions after seeing the guide video 🦑

@@Skating_Squid thanks!! I'm gonna check out the video. Much appreciated. 🙂
K2
I think a mall skate on quads would be a pretty interesting curve ball in this series
haha I actually think thats a really good idea too, thank you!
@@Skating_Squid aye nah thank you for the videos. Keep up the good work!
Bro you deserve 1 mil your videos are so fun and good I love these vids
Btw why do you make skating look so easy😭😭😭😭
What a great place for a skate shop!!! Skate straight around the mall and through the other stores too.
You'll have to come to the UK for a skate rink tour
Yeah that would be awesome!
There's a local abandoned mall with only a few stores in the food court open, and the AMC theater. Everything else is closed. Walking through it creeps me out, because it's like walking through the desiccated shell of a once living beast. It's an actual liminal space - where you can sense people were, and should be, but there's no one. Maybe a handful, but that's it. The feeling of being inside something surreal/dead where you can sense the ghost of the past in every closed store and every empty bench creeps me out so much that I can't stay in it for long. I'm super uncomfortable with liminal spaces because of this.
I don't know if it's because I remember malls from the 90's when they were alive or not.
Malls are the best places to skate bc the ground is sooooooo smooth
Props to you for restraining yourself from mentioning how empty the place is….
For an 80s baby like me it’s like a zombie apocalypse ….I get it though, With Amazon who needs a mall!! Love that montage though💪🏽💪🏽
Yeah it’s sad, I grew up in the 90s and remember how cool the experience was going to the mall but now they are a shell of what they used to be
@@Skating_Squid Shiiit, thankfully the mall where I'm at in Florida is still pretty popular. I know they're dying out, but it's nice to still have one that's full of life nearby, but it does suck that they are disappearing
That’s nice there are a few still. I skated an outlet mall near Orlando, can’t remember the name of it but it’s on my channel somewhere hah
@@Skating_Squid I’m up in Pensacola hahaha, haven’t been to the ones down there! It’s hella crowded at our mall and your video would at least be 2m long before the cops got to you hahaha
Empty malls make me super sad :'(
You're a fantastic skater. I enjoyed the way you moved, glided. Good video. How did you film this?
Thank you and it’s a selfie stick with a camera called “insta 360” 🦑
Coolest idea of all time: use the lobby and large store spaces to build skating environments while the medium to small storefronts get taken over by skating centric shops and places to chill after doing lines on the obstacles. Tell me you wouldn't doe to go to a place like that.
This dead mall looks so much better and more visually interesting than the mall in my hometown that is bustling. I lament my city's lack of aesthetic appeal despite it's relatively large size.
This was a child hood dream of mine .. used to skate everywhere then I stopped once life.
This is very similar to my local mall that I grew up going to. It’s more than half empty except for the same exact stores finish line spenders, an arcade, etc. it’s such a wild feeling taking my son there because he’ll never get to experience what it was actually like back in the day lol
Just to skate in some abandoned place is my dream
My old cities mall is like this 😞 it's been on the down end like this for years there might be even less stores open. I miss malls and arcades
Wow that is so crazy. I know ppl walk the empty malls buy skating , awesome!!❤❤❤
Skate Maze
So weird! The Mall in my town is still pretty busy on weekends, but nowhere near as it was back in the 90s and early 2000s.
Absolutely amazing
🦑🦑🦑🦑
I could listen to you commentate all day I swear. Something different about these videos haha
Thank you! 🙏🏼🦑🙏🏼
Wow, so empty! They should put a roller rink in the parking lot.
i lost my shit when you said you were gonna dip out cuz its depressing, lol. i know your keeping it 100, but that shit got me outta no where haha.
Mannn 😭😭😭
This is literally a childhood dream of mine to do! 😂🔥🔥
oh.. awesome! I live in a very dense country. Having abandoned spots like that, sounds like heaven :)
This empty scary feeling i have felt only once in my life. That's when my beloved city Amsterdam got a lockdown because of covid. Not a chinese lockdown, so we were allowed to go outside, just everything was closed. Because covid was a new virus at the time, everybody was afraid. I am not a doctor, but i have some understanding of viruses, biology in general, find it interesting. So i understood what riskful events are and what are not... ;) So i went outside to skate and the roads were mine!!!! It was amazing. At some point, i got this strong feeling that one thing was missing those few days. Zombies. haha
Oh, it's not that abandoned, still awesome!! i am jealous!
(after watching your vid till the end)
hmm.. sorry man, it is depressing.
I've just found out about your channel today from browsing inline skating from excitement of wanting my inlines I've ordered to arrive!! I haven't skated in 2 years, first reason I kept kicking the brake on my decathlon skates and go flying so I sold them to get freestyle ones I really wish I kept the decathlon pair if I had known I could just take the brake out!! My next pair were freestyle but felt loose at the side of my feet in the boot .. I never wanted to part with them since they looked so nice but now I finally have and just ordered some fila inlines!! Watched 3 videos from you already, I appreciate that you have't added background music yet. I really enjoy hearing the natural skating sounds on the floor. Will share the video to my fb. Amazing video.
Awe well I’m glad you have a new pair coming in and I’m happy you like my videos! On my exploring series I usually never add music so you don’t have to worry unless it’s a transition to a different scene. I only use a lot of music on the rink review series since I can’t use the music that’s played at the rinks. I hope you like your new skates! 🦑
@@Skating_Squid Thank you so much for responding! 😊 The exploring series will always be my fave but i'll check both series out for sure. Just to mention my skates came today! They seem so heavy to lift when skating😅 and the wheels are 80mm they make skating a little different 🤣😂 I havent went out the house yet in them I am gradually getting my confidence back from these videos. Toodles!✌🌸
That looks so fun!
Reminds me of 'The Pines' map on COD Cold War 😎
new to this channel, super comfy content though I love it! probably a dumb question but what is this gopro/drone thing he is using to capture footage? it's so smooth and I can't see anything attached to his hand
It’s a special camera called insta 360 🦑😁
Cool moves man!
Bro took us through a tour in a new level of the backrooms and found other lost people just for a video.
Talk about dedication
Skating a mall is my life long dream.
Our mall over in Daytona beach is starting to look like this.
Ah lakeforest. That mall was my childhood back when it wasn’t dead.
