12:55 The chimney just off centre, I used to work that mill, the toilet was on the fourth floor and one day whilst taking a whizz and looking at the trains through the broken window I realised I came from a railway family and thought I would keep my eyes on any vacancies to get me out of the sh*t job I had. Several weeks later (on a Thursday in the evening news) I saw an ad for TR boys, I applied and was given Ashburys box. I loved it, I then got too old for the position and moved onto the platforms and gradually hated it, I should have stayed in the boxes.
great video,i remember nipping over the line from newton heath to clayton/what a stupid teenager i was, remember these trains thundering past and what great memories, sadly miles platting and park stations have gone, many thanks.
Brought back fond memories as I signed this route but didn't have many trips over it, however the sounds of the cooker rattling with the compressors kicking in and out - now that's a 47 for you. But at least it wasn't a 56 with it's pipes and chains hanging loose at the front.
Worked this line when i was at Man Vic in the 80,s and 90,s.always rough going through Ashton on the 45 restriction. Noticed the dodger in the bay at stalybridge. Thanks for reminding me i had to progess my career elsewhere
Amazing video mate, I happen to have the same journey filmed around 6 years later - sadly from the cab of a pacer (urgh) which will be uploaded in due course. What a difference a few years makes eh? and what a difference a few more make...
Thanks for the comment Ian, it looked pretty run down when i started on the railway in 1974, we used to come this route when we took the 'Bangor Mail' to Stockport, but that was in the dark, so i saved my pennies and eventually got a video camera and managed to film it in the daylight.
Yes I have the full version all the way to York, I have another version taken six months after this all the way from Liverpool Lime Street to Scarborough.
nostalgic for me. I used to ride this line in the mid-80s when I worked at BBC Oxford Road and lived in Stalybridge. Bet it's not like this now. For one thing, the silly buggers will have let the bloody trees grow so you can't see a thing.
Hello people but could somebody please please tell me where did those tracks at 36 secs that went to the left go as you come out of the station. there not there anymore but could somebody please tell me.
They were the start of the relief line which avoided Miles Platting, it was closed a few years after this was filmed when Victoria station was reduced in size. Part of it was reused by Metrolink by their tram depot, and another part was reopened a few years ago as part of the Metrolink line to Oldham and Rochdale. If you look carefully when you're approaching Victoria from the east, you can still see where the line used to run.
Thanks. I thought that all of an important main line like this would have had it, especially given the horrible weather conditions you get past Stalybridge in Winter...
Between Stalybridge and Huddersfield you find Saddleworth Viaduct (all 16 arches of it!) I used to go to school opposite and spent many breaks / lunch hours / maths lessons taking locomotive numbers!
Thank you for the comments, I agree what you have said, but there are 2 problems, cutting the trees/bushes causes landslides, leaving the tress/bushes causes 'leaves on the lines', so 2 solutions, put more freight train on the railways (these get the shit off the rails) and only trim the trees/bushes, not take them all away ! and then you people can see the scenery.
You can see the lack of investment over many years in this video. All the track and infrastructure looks well shot and run down, looks like you were lucky to stay on the road in some places LOL. Great video!

It's alright. We nipped across in the opposite direction!
Lovely to see the Stockport dmu working, and by a 104 in blue. Fantastic video thank you.

Glad you enjoyed Kevin, I miss the BR era and all the drivers who taught us the job.
@Phil6219 Many thanks for the comments. I recently, well 2009 filmed the railway again and as you pointed out, it sure does change.

Sheer delight. Thanks.
Thank you for your comments, suppose i could, but that would mean doing it in two sections, as youtube only allow me 15 minutes..............

If I recall rightly they went to Red Bank carriage sidings.

Excellent memorabilia this video.
The first AWS magnet you recieved was at Blaock Rock IBS Signal just about a mile and a half further North from this video
Nice to see the old "Park" station or what's left of it.
What a difference in the lineside vegetation in 30 years
Do you have the next section beyond Stalybridge?
Thanks. I thought that all of an important main line like this would have had it, especially given the horrible weather conditions you get past Stalybridge in Winter...
@ewsiscrap Many thanks for your comments, they were great days, just one thing Holbeck 55A Rules (lol)
Thank you for uploading this video : )
Is there no AWS on this line at all?

Did you ever upload a continuation towards Huddersfield?
Was Moysie on board for this one?
Cant beat a good ole classic 47,, much better than all these boring frigging mod tech units...these were real trains..!!! .
No problem, glad you like it.
Hi Fred, the date is 21st April 1989

Rode this line daily in the late 1960's When Ashton looked better. Not quite Hebden Bridge but now all these stations look awful.

Not as realistic as TSW2 :)
