I bought a Dometic CC 40 for 500 dollars as a experiment, i will never go back to ice, even on a fishing day trip today, i cleaned my fish an turned on the fridge, stuck them in there, definite game changer
I freaking love my fridge in my truck. It’s also nice during the week when not camping. We use it going to the beach, getting groceries and not having to go home immediately and will hold drinks in the garage for games.
We bought the CFX-75 for one of the reasons you mentioned - meds. The unit performed flawlessly. Sits in the truck bed of my 2018 F150. It's a bit heavy, and does take up a bit of space, but it's built exceptionally well. We used it on a month long road trip out west - from Ontario to Washington state and then BC and Alberta. Had it running from both my Inergy Kodiak, and an extension cord into one of the outlets in the truck. Worked great! Was awesome to have the freezer section, and then shut off when not needed and just left the fridge side. There was so much space - and was great to be able to stand up a large 2L bottle inside the fridge. There were also definitely times when having a freezer - access to ice cream - was just a very cool perk to have.
There is probably one of these in my future, particularly when I start doing trips longer than 5 days. However, for my current purposes I use a cooler with a locking lid and a Mylar emergency blanket wrapped around 3 Cooler Shock freezer bags and all my food. Day 3 the freezer bags are still frozen solid. Day 5 the milk is still cold. Good enough for me for now. I'm still interested in those sliding drawer fridges on the market but $$$$$!
I live in qld Australia and I have 4 dometic waeco fridge freezers for camping. I have a separate lithium battery hooked to a charge controller and a solar panel on the roof of my car. My car fridge is on 24/7 and battery is full all day then is back to full by 7am.
Hey everyone! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Dometic was really great and spent quite a bit of time going through the products. Do you need a fridge, well no, as long as you have a good supply of water, but many have said it is the single greatest upgrade they have made. Cheers! Keep being awesome!
After putting a fridge/ freezer from dometic in my car running 24/7 I realised I will never own a car without having a 24/7 running fridge. I now own 4 dometic fridge freezers, 1 in my car one in my caravan 1 in my camper trailer and a spare in my garage.
I have a CFX3 35, this thing has never been switched off since installing it. I do have a solar panel connected to the leisure battery. My battery is still fully charged. We don't get a fat lot of sun or daylight hours in UK through winter. I'm impressed with it and would recommend a dometic CFX3 series to anybody building an overlander.
I have 2 smaller 38 litre Evakool fridges in a camper trailer so they can extend our travelling times out to a week. Also I like ice in my JD. It is hot in Australia 😁
Sorry, but in Australia, we do not call it SUV touring. "SUV" to us is an American term for an all wheel drive that never leaves the road. We call it Four Wheel Drive Touring. #OB329
There's not that many people in Australia and, despite being the size of the lower 48, we all have the same accent from one end of the continent to the other. I can, with absolute certainty, confirm that there wouldn't be a single Australian 4WD tourer that would use the term SUV Touring. We do all have car fridges and the two most popular brands are Waeco and Engel.
I've been thinking about putting one in the daily. Often I have to hit the grocery store, then work, then drive home. Would be nice to have the peace of mind that the food is still fresh. As of now for camping or grocery runs we use a Yeti Tundra 45 with a freezer ice pack. Works great for a weekend, but its time we extend our trips.
hey Darryl from down under. i have a 95 litter waeco/dometic fridge freezer and i use a redarc battery management system that charges the 2nd in my car i find i can put more food and drink and no ice no soggy food its the best i love it
Just a suggestion, I start my fridge the night before so it is cooled before I put it into the vehicle. I also put already frozen food into the freezer along with a cooler brick or two as these help lower the power consumption. I also limit the number of times I access the fridge as each time you open it you are introducing hot air.
Road trip vs camping while traveling through remote areas. On a road trip you don't need one because you have stores available. Camping while traveling through remote areas, or "overlanding" if you want to use the overused term, it is a must.
I use a Coleman Xtreme cooler and blue ice packs and I got some refreezable ice cube things from walmart. Fridge is more for convenience than anything else but it's not necessary
We have a Luna in the rig and a Dometic in the trailer (slide out). I have almost zero experience with the Dometic but it sure seems nice. The Luna is just amazing, it really is, it was the hardest upgrade for the vehicle for me to justify doing. It was expensive, but after having it for 4 or 5 months now the best part is how cold it gets, how it holds a temp (I live where it is very hot in Arizona). The biggest upside is not carrying a cooler full of ice up to hotel rooms or taking it in and out. This means when we stop, my wife can get to work without my help as I do other things. I too worried about battery issues, and they do have a cutoff, alarm and a wonderful LED showing battery status. To overcome this fear of a dead battery when being remote, I got a NOCO Genius Boost GB70 (good for large engines), which so far is just used as a portable power station for devices. Charges fast, while you drive via cigarette outlet and is not very big with minimal fuss. Also got a basic trickle charge solar panel in case I am needing to stay in one spot for a long time (have not done yet). The other benefit to a permanently mounted fridge in a vehicle, going to the grocery store, I put the refer items in there for the drive home. Which might seem silly, but if you need to go into another store or pick someone up, no big deal.
The best fridge freezers that use the leased power to buy is the ARB 47L/50QT 1st and then the Engel MT45, these two have the lowest power consumption out of every brand on the market, If a person can not afford or does not want to splash out the big bucks on a fridge freezer One Dometic product that is the best in it's class Is the Dometic TCX35 Cooler, this is not a fridge but it will cool things down to 30*c below the ambient Temp and unlike most 12v coolers this model will shut off and cycle like a fridge, I have seen my one go down to 1*c/33.8*f in an ambient temp of 27*c/81*f and they use as little as 8 watts, Less than half the price of a fridge/freezer but they work better than any other cooler on the market. So they are a great option and if you own a fridge freezer and you set it to freeze you can freeze some of those blue Ice bricks and the add them to the cooler on extremely hot days just to help it out a bit, I tried doing that and it kept the cooler above and below 0*c/32*f for over 24hrs and the Dr Peppers and Cokes were numbingly cold the next day, There are plenty of options out there folks, you don't have to spend the big bucks, take care.
I would love one. Gonna build a truck bed camper that will stay in full time. I can’t justify the price though. I’m gonna op for an $86 Ozark Yeti clone and be about $1000 richer by the time you factor in the power setup you would need. I had to laugh when he said “ A lot of bang for your buck”.
Back in the 1980’s and early ‘90’s I overlanded in Africa a few times for several months at a time. We never had refrigeration, we didn’t even have a cooler. We only bought meat (beef or chicken mostly) first thing in the morning, like 7am, at the open markets. We then we put the meat in a stainless steel bowl and covered the bowl with a wet towel. As the towel dries due to daytime heating, the evaporation draws out warmth and inside the bowl the meat remains quite cool. Not refrigeration cold and safe, but nice and cool. We would cook the meat that night and never had a problem. We used the wet towel trick with out water bottles too. Having said that, if we could have had a proper compressor refrigerator on those trips, it would have been awesome. Warm beer was all too common and not really to my taste.
I'm running a cfx95dz. I was shocked at the lack of videos on it before I purchased it. Been in the bed of my truck about 6 months straight on one deep cycle battery and has held up pretty good so far. I got a Good Sam discount at camping world and still paid about $1k
My trusty Igloo cooler has gone from Coldfoot, AK to Cabo San Lucas and everywhere in between on many 4 wheel drive road trips. But that was over 20 years ago! Lol...This whole "overlanding" trend has gotten me interested in vehicle based exploration once again. I'd like to throw a National Luna fridge in the back of 4Runner. But I may just get an Orca cooler for my Tacoma and call it good.
You would have to preface how long your trip is, and whether you can get ice on the way. If you are 7 days or less and no way to get ice you do not NEED a 12v fridge. Anything over that, and without access to ice you will. And you can also get by without ice by precooking and freezing food, and using frozen water bottles. Cold water in 100 degree heat is priceless. Dual ice chest help keep the long range stuff frozen for longer while you more regularly open and close the other one.
Dometics look terrific, but we like our simple and inexpensive ice chest setup. We don't need cold drinks (we drink water, coffee, tea, wine and bourbon). We use a lot of canned meat and most produce does not need refrigeration. Nothing gets soggy because we organize food in gallon ziplock bags.
Hey Gary! Each zone is individually controlled with an insulated dividing wall. So in tech talk - our dual zones use a single compressor with two separate evaporator coils that can be controlled separately. This let’s us have two independent zones with minimum power consumption. :)
I just purchased the Dometic CFX 50 just wondering what AGM 12v battery will work the best? I’m planing on using the fridge on a Nothstar 27F AGM battery with reserve capacity of 195 and capacity 20Hr (AH) 92. Will this battery work on the Dometic 50? The other option would be to go with a group 31 AGM Northstar battery but it’s a much heavier and pricey......your thoughts?
I'm considering a fridge. First decision is what size. Be nice if Dometic had a graph by # of people and # of days to recommend a size. The second decision is how to power it when at camp - dual battery setup, Goal Zero, solar, etc. With the cost of setting these up, I'd hate to spend a bunch of money and make a poor decision. I spoke to someone recently that purchased one of the very large units. It's just he and his wife and he found it was way to big and wished he'd had gone with a smaller unit.
Somebody woke up on the cranky side of the bed this morning. I understand the issue of overbuying because i thought bigger and more expensive was alway better. I have learned to put more thought into how im actually going to use somethingm
Hi Ralph - For two people going for weekend or week-long trips, the CFX35 or CFX40 should give you plenty of space to store items that need to be refrigerated/frozen. (The 35 and 40 have the same footprint and the only difference is the height) If you're going with more people (or want to bring more food/drinks) than the 50/65 would be a good choice. The 75DZ provide the most flexibility as you can have a fridge and freezer at the same time, but you need a larger cargo area to store it. All of the coolers will give you more room than you expect as you dont need to add ice. When it comes to a power solution - a dual battery set up will provide the most consistent power and a dedicated power source that can run the cooler when the car is off for extended periods of time. An external power is also a great option (and will give you flexibility to move the cooler around the camp site), but you need to pay attention to the output capabilities. The battery will need to maintain an output of ~11v or it will trip the battery protection system. (Lead acid batteries are more consistent than litium ion). Since the power draw of the coolers is so low, you could use a 100 watt pannel, but might consider a larger unit if you are going to power additional appliances. Hope that helps.
For two people get a 40. For a young family of 4 or 5 get a 60/65. I have a 65 in my Jeep. It's too big for two but when we travel with the children (and there is beer involved) it's just right
To be honest, I see overland vehicle owners dropping coin on a lot dumber mods than a fridge. I see $400+ grilles that are not needed, I see $100 shovels that are overkill, $3000-4000 roof top tents, heck even (probably) hundreds of dollars spent in exterior lighting kits that serve little purpose other than looks. The piece of mind knowing your perishable food is good to go... is WELL worth the $740 I just spent (with REI coupon)... on a Dometic CFX3 35.
You just need a good cooler with big blocks of ice & that will last a long time. I've put ice cream in a cooler with Ice block that I made from freezing milk jugs with water and the ice cream was still cold & frozen solid 3 days later, & it didn't cost me a couple of hundred dollars.
The dometic is a nice luxury item, but I’d much rather spend 400 dollars on a high end rotomolded cooler. The cooler is much more versatile in that you can throw it in your boat or move them around your campsite for off the grid camping. It also doubles as survival water in the unfortunate experience of breaking down in a remote location.
Surely you can throw a fridge, 100ah lithium battery and solar panel in your boat, and all together it won't weigh much more if at all, than a decent sized cooler 2/3rds full of ice?
Although it is certainly possible to overland without a refrigerator, it isn't something I would want to do. With solar power or gas as a way to keep things going, refrigeration really makes life on the road or travelling in remote areas, so much more comfortable. We have used a number of both gas and 12 volt fridges over the years and there is no way we would travel without at least one on board. One thing, what is and SUV??? Down here they are 4x4s or 4wds :)
Dometic is all in the name.. for people who have money to spend on stuff.. There are way more efficient coolers, fridges, freezers out there that are way less money.. DO the research..
No fridge = no cold beer! I just did a 2 week trip over the Christmas period, Scotland to Belfast, up around and all the way down the west coast of Ireland, across to Wales, up through England and back into Scotland. 2000 miles with my Engel purring away. Did freeze my rocket once but my Tennents were ice cold! No brainer.
Comes down to how much you would be willing to pay to NOT have to listen to ice slosh around for hours on a 4x4 road.... Answer: Any price. That's the reason to get a refrige
Those fridges are not cheap nor are they affordable to those that aren't rich or makes a shit load of money. Great video, awesome fridge made by a great company, but for the rest of us on a budget with a 9 - 5 type of job we can not afford this even on a payment plan.
How much did they pay you? Did you get a free fridge from them? How about an unbiased review ? I have spent 3 years in the desert on and off with REGULAR ICE, there are no remote locations in the world where you cant get ice cubes IF YOU PLAN YOUR TRIP WISELY. Get a fridge $$$ upgrade battery $$$ add solar panels $$$ they are heavier than a cooler. ITS MY OPINION THEY ARE NOT WORTH THE HASSLE.
It's just 'touring' not 'suv touring' - haha - all those big 4x4s and their owners would not be happy being called suvs😤😆😣. Have done both fridge and esky - no way you can beat a fridge when camped for 2wks on the beach in summer👍
Cody Goff I'm looking at long off grid stays and need a large capacity fridge freezer combo. Especially being up to 100 + miles away from a grocery store. I've been considering 2 run off of their own rechargeable deep cycle.
You did not ask about pricing. You did not ask about warranty. And a few other things I would think people would like to know. Yes I saw the links but you shood have been a better interview in my opinion. Sorry man. Get better.
I have a CFX40 that's been bouncing around the back of my Jeep for a year and it's still going strong. It was almost half the price of an ARB fridge.
I use a Dometic CF 50 on the daily in my Semi Truck. 3 years and still going never unplugged always running.
Should have a lp powered cooler.
My arb ran 6 years straight in my semi trucks. Still works perfectly year 8. Building a slider mount for my jeep now.
The compressor part is what got me excited about this line of fridges. Efficiency is always super nice.

Just depends on what you want.. You can pack away mre's or mountain house meals and be just fine.

Ha yea! Sorry for sounding like a dork. I was just wanting to give people ideas before they spend $1,000 on a fridge.
You don't sound like a dork at all! Cheers!
@@TheDenisedrake Not at all. I agree with what you're saying. I just don't take meat on my trips and don't need a cooler.

@@gregorsamsa1364 You don't like canned meat? Like tuna, salmon or chicken?
Regarding the double frig, how does it keep one side frozen and another 38 degrees?
I’ll have to let Dometic answer that one!
Hey Gary! Each zone is individually controlled with an insulated dividing wall. So in tech talk - our dual zones use a single compressor with two separate evaporator coils that can be controlled separately. This let’s us have two independent zones with minimum power consumption. :)
How does the fridge in your house keep 1 section frozen and the other just cold?
How about pricing?

I just purchased the Dometic CFX 50 just wondering what AGM 12v battery will work the best? Quick question, most people store these fridges where there isn't much air supply to help them cool is this a problem?
Yes! They need about 6" of space around the fridge vents for proper circulation. If you dont have it - they wot cool.
Are they both low profile!??
I’d like to see one with a propane option. Even the small Dometic drains more power than you might think
Just bought a cfx 50w love it, can’t wait to get it out in the wild!
Wow Steve, must be awesome to such a keyboard warrior.
It's too big for two but when we travel with the children (and there is beer involved) it's just right
Just got a CFX95. How can a fridge be too big? You peeps must eat like birds. And, by the way:
There is never too much beer!
Super Awesome!
Can it hang with an Engel?
great video...thx for the info.
The review doesn't start until one third the way through I suggest fast forward.
Nice channel ! We subscribe ! 😄
was it insulin that needed to be cooled?
Very good, appreciate the unbiased vid.
The piece of mind knowing your perishable food is good to go... is WELL worth the $740 I just spent (with REI coupon)... on a Dometic CFX3 35.
getting one!
What exactly is needed for a Jeep to run a fridge like these?
Amanda Flores a 12v outlet. You're good to go.
this was awesome, much appreciated. like always awesome video michael, OB#2590 hea!
Hi Michael!!!
Haha! Hi Blake!
Mate have a chat to evakool Australian made with German compressor
You just need a good cooler with big blocks of ice & that will last a long time. I've put ice cream in a cooler with Ice block that I made from freezing milk jugs with water and the ice cream was still cold & frozen solid 3 days later, & it didn't cost me a couple of hundred dollars.
Very cool
I need a fridge, then Dometic line goods like a good choice.
Of course not! Sure does make things nice, though. I do have a great Orion Cooler and here lately I've been just using it instead of my fridge.
I don"t have electricity in my home, i just only use solar power battery, but i want refrigerator BUT I CAN NOT AFFORD TO BUY...
If you’re gonna run a single battery just use a little portable power box and be free
Lp powered cooler would be well received by the public.
Who would spend 1500$ for a fridge but not spend 300$ for a second battery setup??
Apparently someone who is product manager for Dometic. He probably didnt pay $1500 for it either.
I know guy who bought a mini fridge and small deep freezer runs of 800watts per day and invested 1.5k into more solar and batterys
Am I jus a poor underpaid truck driver or is everything expensive?
Fridges are not cheap, it’s true.
Unless your a specialty driver or owner op your probably underpaid
Nope. Pretty good at packing food for long trips. Prep foods properly and they last. Canning is also a good option.
No brainer.
Yeah, we don't call it "SUV touring"....
Man domestic really train this guy well, he even went down to binary lol.
Comes down to how much you would be willing to pay to NOT have to listen to ice slosh around for hours on a 4x4 road.... Answer: Any price. That's the reason to get a refrige
I'm just gonna sit on my intercooler.
Those fridges are not cheap nor are they affordable to those that aren't rich or makes a shit load of money. Great video, awesome fridge made by a great company, but for the rest of us on a budget with a 9 - 5 type of job we can not afford this even on a payment plan.
Hoa Huynh well he does take a bunch of money from people for a badge with a number so he has plenty of it.
Lots of people waste money on all kinds of stuff. You have to decide what's important to you.
Øhh so do you need a Home fridge then.!
bring prices down
How much did they pay you?
Haha! Fair enough! Noted! No offense meant.
Overland Bound no offense taken, tis all good 👍
It’s Jim Carrey!!!
They eat up batteries
Stifler is that you?!
I have the Dometic cfx95
Cody Goff need info on this. Price and how you like it?
Bladen Rexroth I love it because it has a freezer and fridge side retail 1300 I got mine for 800
Cody Goff I'm looking at long off grid stays and need a large capacity fridge freezer combo. Especially being up to 100 + miles away from a grocery store. I've been considering 2 run off of their own rechargeable deep cycle.
Bladen Rexroth I would check out Norcold and Dometic they have different styles and sizes
Cody Goff I'm in a 4x4 school bus. I'm considering a full size F/F combo and a small one.
Spoiler alert, yes u do
hahahah
kinda looks like Jim carrey
You did not ask about pricing. You did not ask about warranty. And a few other things I would think people would like to know. Yes I saw the links but you shood have been a better interview in my opinion. Sorry man. Get better.
