    I did not know the 730 had a pony motor option. Learn something every day. I spent many many hours on a 720 D in the Yellowstone Valley. Just as nice as yours. I started it backwards twice. We had a JD two bottom "spinner" plow, three-point mounted. In heavy river bottom gumbo and old alfalfa, the 720 just pounded but never stalled. It outdid the landowners IH 560 with the same plow, hands down. Only by constantly engaging and releasing the TA on the IH could it keep up. I love your video. Now if It only had "smellivision". Oh, the memories. Thanks for sharing the video.

    Grew up with Farmall Super MTA's Case and John deere tractors in the 50's and 60's. No cabs, no stereo, no A/C. Just out in the open inhaling dust, exhaust fumes., and pollen. Later in my life in the eighty's, I saw those big old 86 series John Deere tractors with their airconditioned cabs and I was thrilled at first but then realized that I was missing something. Wasn't quite what I thought it would be. Took y;our attention all the time to keep a straight line. Couldn't smell the fresh turned dirt. Glad I grew up when I did. At the end of the day we left the fields and still had to feed the cattle and hogs. Nowadays these grain farmers are in the same boat as me when it comes to groceries. They have to go to the store and seldom raise any stock or even garden truck.

    I saw a lot of plowed fields during my youth in NW Ohio. The soil in this video was perfect go plowing. The soil I remember was a lot heavier while being plowed and probably required more tractor power in addition to additional disking. Soil conditions and timing are almost as important as having the right equipment. Love JD's!!

    beautiful pieces, my dad bought a 730 pony start brand new back in the day, had the plow, two point mower, mounted cultivator, corn picker, sheller. and a soft side cab. put m+w pistons and bigger sparklers in it and could pull the 4th bottom like a dream. spent a lot of hours in that seat. we had an old minny mo too. a man almost lost a leg on that thing, got his coveralls wrapped up in the pto shaft. that was before the days of free spinning pto guards.

      Never had the pleasure of running one, but I certainly miss the sound. In 1963 when a friend showed me his new 4020 ( I believe it was), I couldn't help wondering why JD would give up the distinctiveness.

    • @alphaone101
      @alphaone101 4 года назад +2

      @@marvindoolin1340 I was disappointed beyond description when John Deere did away with the 2 cylinder John Deeres, in fact I swore I would never forgive them for it. Over they years I've read various articles about why John Deere made the change from the 2 cylinders and it wasn't something they did lightly, without giving it a lot of thought. I was John Deere's two cylinders that distinguished them from all other tractors, it was what symbolized John Deere to most people. Making a change could be costly to John Deere, but not making the change could be even worse. There were several items that had to be considered and I don't remember all of them but one of them was the fact that the 2 cylinder engines had reach their ultimate size in cubic inches and horsepower. I understood that a ultimately had to agree with them and then I had to agree with them on all the other factors that went into the decision to move away from the Two cylinder tractors. Times change, farms change and farmers needs change and you can either change to meet those changes or go out of business. As much as I miss the sound and appearance of the old 2 cylinder John Deeres, I think they made the right move and their replacement tractors to take the place of the two cylinders were truly modern, up to date tractors with features that farmers wanted and with John Deere quality. If you get a chance read about why John Deere changed from the 2 cylinders to three and more cylinders, it's very interesting. Just as interesting is reading about why John Deere made the 2 cylinder tractors to begin with.

    My dad bought a new JD 730 diesel spring of 1960 electric start it was his main tractor till 1970 when it was regulated to planting and cultivating, sadly it broke the crankshaft in 1971 for some unexplained reason he sold to a salvage yard and replaced it with a 4520 which was not a very good tractor that size tractor didn't become good until they changed the engine and created the 4620. The 45's had a 404 engine with turbo charger the 46's had tubo charger and intercooler that made a huge difference in horsepower and longevity

    I have spent many hours on a 720 and 620 we used the 720 to run the forage harvester these were awesome tractors in their day one thing I have to say is our pony motor always had plenty of blue smoke coming out under the hood and if you stalled it in the field you normally didn't have enough gas to run the pony motor and had to walk back to the barn to get another thimble full of gas
