The greatest wrestler of all time. Lou could have beaten most UFC champions now in a MMA match. His conditioning was incredible, watch the world championship match with him and Buddy Rogers, he out worked Buddy. Made $300,000 a year in the 50s, as high paid as any sportsman in the world. Served his country in WW2, didn't take the easy way out, he enlisted as a normal army recruit. Imagine all the matches he had, the places he saw, the endless stories he had. Wish I could have heard them all.
After I left this video I came back to thank you for uploading this. Times are tough for me and Mr.Thesz is very inspirational. This definitely made my day. thank you
I agree Kevin times are tough, Lou's video is very inspirational. Never saw him live but was fortunate to see matches in the Houston Coliseum in the late 60's thru early 80's when it was more exciting and entertaining. I still have about 4 boxes of programs of not only of Houston but also matches in major U.S. cities. At this moment I can only recall one of my pen pals, Bill Woodall of the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. Bill, If you happen see this post, I hope you are doing well.
“If it is to be, it is up to me.” … These words were painted in varsity locker room over the door exiting to the football field Salisbury High School in my home town. I didn’t play football there, I was a wrestler. I still carry these words 30+ years later, and repeat them to myself and my students (as a school teacher and their wrestling coach) anytime they’re needed. I entered the world of professional wrestling this year at the age of 48… and the words ring as true now as they did to me as a teenager. “If it is to be, it is up to me.” Thank you Mr. Thesz.
You look up the word Wrestler or the phrase Pro Wrestling Legend, and it should be a picture of Lou Thesz! A true all time great that was in a league all of his own! 🤼♂️🥇

Just as it is today, even in Thesz's time, the promoters decided the outcomes of the matches, including who would be world champion. One reason Thesz was champion so long was that he could legitimately beat any challenger. So, the promoters in those days demanded that a champ be the best wrester to protect the title against a challenger going rogue during a match and pinning the champ when he wasn't supposed to. No one could pin Lou if he didn't want to be pinned.
My Asshole Explodes When I Eat Hot Peppers Nah, wrestling had predetermined finishes since the 20's. The public had even suspected Gotch vs Hack 2 was fixed. It's just that the wrestlers and bookers and promoters were so good at what they did the public couldn't tell most the time who was going to win. And they never questioned whether what they saw was real or not. If a wrestler applied a submission people thought it was real. If they threw a closed fist they thought it was real. Shoots through double crosses were still very common though. Thesz had several over them.
Kfowlkes09 You are right. Kayfabe was absolute, but since so many wrestlers are now writing a shoot about the business, we are learning just how far back booking finishes went. One reason people may think scripting started in the 1950s is because during that time outlandish wrestlers like Gorgeous George came along, and it became difficult for many to believe these cartoon characters really existed outside the ring. Thesz was an interesting case. Here was an excellent wrestler who came along as showmanship was replacing straight wrestling in the ring. To make good money, he had to go along with wrestling outsized villains who may not have had any wrestling skills. He even drew heat in some territories, refusing to break cleanly and delivering pops on the referee's blind side. But he always kept his wrestling skills. His Greco-Roman back body drop really wowed the fans. By the way, I was an eyewitness. I have a few years on me ;)
Lord E-Vyl I amazed at that belief. Do some research. there were plenty of men who were gimmicks in wrestling well before the 50's. Man Mountain Dean was a shooter? Bronko Nagurski, mentioned by Thesz, was simply not a wrestler, but a gimmick. My grandfather was a pro (his prime was around 1900-15...Longggg time ago) and my Dad did some promotion. Gus Sonnenberg, who had been a college and pro football player, beat the immortal Ed "Strangler" Lewis (who both trained and promoted Lou) in 1929. I remember my Dad saying back in the early 60's, "Do you think that Sonnenberg could just perform a flying tackle across the ring against Lewis and Lewis couldn't stop him?" Yes, Lou's matches were pre-determined.BUT, everyone knew that Lou as a true Shooter could beat them all any time and as a true Hooker, could hurt them, badly. True shoots? Pre-1920 most likely.
A dignified, insightful portrait. If I had one complaint it would be that there was too little footage of the infinitely varied wrestling holds Thesz could suddenly unleash in the blink of an eye, like a string of firecrackers going off. But on second thought, it wouldn't do to make other profiles in the "Wrestling Icon" series look bad by comparison. :)

+Stephen Bianchi His matches with Verne Gagne, Antonio Inoki, and Edouard Carpentier were some of my favorites. I also saw a match he had with Bruno Sammartino on tape but I don't think that one is on RUclips. If it is watch that too.
There are what Lou himself described as mini shoots in some of his matches with other real wrestlers. You can see some competitive heat in his matches against Verne Gagne and Ralph Silverstein.
I'm not reaching here to say that there aren't more than a couple of workers today that could teach hand to hand combat. I'm not even sure guys like Kurt Angle or Brock Lesnar, with superb amateur credentials, have the hooker skills like Lou had.
"If it is to be, it is up to me," is a quote that is credited to William Johnson, but I know nothing more of that man. My dad used to tell stories of seeing Thesz wrestle near our hometown back in the fifties, and named names of people he faced, some known and others not so much. Dad had a lot of respect for Thesz, as a wrestler and a man. That told me a lot as a kid; and I see it in watching the old matches and this documentary.
Would love to see a 21-year-old Lou Thesz wrestle a 21 year old Kurt Angle in a shoot match. Kurt was an Olympic champion and he might get the best of Lou, but it would be a heck of a match.

He is in real halls of fame including one that's named after him the Thesz/Tragos hall of fame his name and legacy should not be tarnished by wwe hall of shame which only exist on DVD's and Mcmorons bank account.
You are right. You have heard that WWE is building a Hall of Fame. Why I do not know. WWE has taken wrestling to a direction that the old fans don't like and It will really change when they go with WWE TV.It's not gonna be what the fans want it is gonna start to hit another market that is not about catering to the wrestling fan.Which who really cares about WWE I don't even watch the product of today. It saddens me to go to Utube and see that WWE has the rights to Mid Atlantic Wrestling. That I growed up and liked watching.Just glad I can come on here and watch it.
He's a shoe in. The only reason why he hasn't gone in already is that he's no longer with us. If he were alive in 2014 then he'd very likely be a marque draw and treated like a living legend like Bruno.

+Mr Keon Keon (Mr Keon1414) My philosophy is: Respect for that style of wrestling and that era, for me and for everyone else who knows the minimum, Lou Thesz is among the 10 greatest ever, FOREVER! Now, we have to respect also todays industry of wrestling and the Mcmahons - We have to respect Roderick Mcmahon, Vince J. Mcmahon and Vince K. Mcmahon and those who will come after him! The late XX Century and early XXI also as awesome MODERN wrestlers - It's all about different times and evolution, like everything else!

I think Bruno Sammartino would be #2 followed by Harley Race #3. Flair's longest title reign didn't last as long as that of these two old-timers. Flair's longest title reign lasted almost 2 years, give or take 1-2 mos.. Harley Race's longest title reign lasted over 2 1/2 years and Bruno was champion for 11 years. Bruno's second title reign lasted even longer than Race's longest title reign. Yes, I'm basing this on how long these wrestlers held the title. Flair would win the title and then lose it, then regain it and then, 3-5 months down the road, would lose it again.
It wasn't too far removed from the modern day product though. Wrestlers did all sorts of maneuvers that you wouldn't think would be around. Bodyslams, piledrivers, suplexes, flying tackles, flying body scissors, somersaults, and even top rope acrobatics. But everything was done for the sake of realism. Today, wrestling is considered just entertainment; so wrestlers don't necessarily have to worry about the realism.
A story I heard involves Lou and Buddy Rogers. Rogers was supposed to drop the belt to Lou, but was having second thoughts, wanting to remain Champion. Before the match, Lou told Buddy, that he (Lou) was going to be the new Champion. He told Buddy, they could do it the easy way or the hard way, but either way, Lou was going to win....and he did.
Unfortunately, Lou Thesz's style of wrestling would've been boring to watch by most of today's wrestling fans. Times have changed. Most of today's fans simply have no patience to watch a real wrestling match that's devoid of aerial and acrobatic maneuvers. That's just the way it is. I truly wish it were the opposite. Looking forward to see you wrestle in another dimension, Lou.
It wasn't a style really , he faked real shooting very convincingly . Because shoot wrestling was popular people had a knowledge of what real combat looked like and liked it . Today if people want that , the closest they can get is MMA .
Actually the more things change, the more they stay the same. There are MANY amateur wrestlers in todays wrestling, and plenty of guys that do stuff that Thesz did. He would have adjusted his style just fine. He may not have fit in the Attitude Era, But I could see a modern Lou Thesz fitting in just fine in NJPW, ROH or NXT today.
If it was a shoot against those 2, suzuki would be the better match. Kurt would do ok but Kurt doesn't know hooking as far as I know, Lou would torture him.
Darn, he broke more of his bones during his long wrestling career than Evel Knievel did of his own during his career as a motorcycle daredevil and stuntman. I don't think Thesz could've transitioned to full-time acting like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson & "Stone Cold" Steve Austin did. That career switch just wasn't available to Thesz during his heyday, I believe.
Lou Thesz was the perfect wrestler. Elite conditioning, knowledge of all aspects of amateur and submission wrestling, speed, agility, mental toughness. He had it all. Even at 86 years old I still feel he left us too soon.

Bullshit, Pro wrestling didn't become scripted until the early 1950s, up until then, they had legit SHOOTS

They didn't. Not even close. You'd have to look at a Ken Shamrock or a Dan Severn for a closer comparison.
That's why the style "Hooking" or Catch Wrestling is a lost art, because hardly anybody teaches it anymore.
Dan Severn is probably the closest to Lou in terms of style.

Belongs in the WWE Hall of Fame
+Danny Gallimore Hi again, I thought you might like to watch our latest videos featuring Handsome Jimmy Valiant ruclips.net/video/HiSpZr-rcvk/видео.html and Jack Brisco ruclips.net/video/HiSpZr-rcvk/видео.html
Enjoy and thanks for watching!
The late XX Century and early XXI also as awesome MODERN wrestlers - It's all about different times and evolution, like everything else!
wow thanks heaps for this video man it's awesome!
thanks for watching it

Easily the greatest wrestler ever
Only got to see him wrestle once, in West Palm Beach wrestle Danny Miller.
awesome. thanks for watching
BEST OF ALL TIME!! FLAIR IS NO 2
I think Bruno Sammartino would be #2 followed by Harley Race #3.
Amazing

Narrator said Lou waved goodbye to us in August 28 2002 even though he was dead at that point
Wrestling back then was different when wrestling was more amateur like college or high school but with a few dropkicks and a couple of clotheslines.

Lou thesz is a 18 time world champ , beat a boxer and one of the Gracies
He held the champ for 7 years
Wrestled for 60 years
If you can get a copy, read his autibio, "Hooker." One of the best.

Thanks for leaving a comment Bull B. We appreciate the feedback.
El Santo next.
Thanks for watching
that was a quote from BRUNO SAMMARTINO not lou.
I prefer Japan style wrestling. Its like a mix of old school wrestling for the first 10-20 minutes and explosive stuff near the end
Also Thesz's best. Matches often came when he was going up against unorthodox wrestlers who were doing the high flying stuff. Opposites attract
Fans can be taught. Let the ground-and-pound guys win and they'll start cheering the winners.

Imagine Lou Thesz vs Minoru Suzuki...or Thesz vs Kurt Angle 🤼♂️
If it was a shoot against those 2, suzuki would be the better match. Kurt would do ok but Kurt doesn't know hooking as far as I know, Lou would torture him.
Angle would outwrestle Thesz easily in amateur wrestling but if they were shooting Thesz would end up catching him with a sub.
A real man.
Indeed he was
That was Waldo not Fritz Von Erich
thanks
Great story!
Thank you James
My dad said Lou Thesz was the greatest wrestler he ever saw and that is good enough for me,end of story.
Your Dad knew what he was talking about!! Thanks for watching
Lou was 74 for his last match that is not "late 70s"

Darasingh ne haraya that Mumbai mein
Yeah dude 😎 good post 📯. Now we are talking wrestling 🔥 R U man enough?
Darn, he broke more of his bones during his long wrestling career than Evel Knievel did of his own during his career as a motorcycle daredevil and stuntman. I don't think Thesz could've transitioned to full-time acting like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson & "Stone Cold" Steve Austin did. That career switch just wasn't available to Thesz during his heyday, I believe.
It was a honour to meet him. Thanks for watching
Yeah dude 😎. You are so right. What is up? Man on man action 🔥. R U man y?
Thanks for the comment AsapS
