      Dennis Tedder I’ve grown as a musician a lot since I posted that comment 6 years ago. Then nor now would I play the piece that fast. My point had nothing to do with musicality. I was commenting on the technical ability. It seems you are missing the point, and to call a stranger a heathen for a comment on a RUclips video seems a bit much. Relax a bit

    Wow ! I love it. - One of the real pleasure of my Dad who taught me classical music was the diversity and all different forms one piece of music could be played. This is the spirit that brought to the world many orchestrated works for pieces meant and written for one particular instrument. - ‘Play it slow, play it fast, alone or together but by God play it with joy and love for the music’. And the hell with those complaining.

    what cracks me up the most is that all the haters on here could NEVER hold a candle to Ms. Bish and play nearly as good as she does. She is a wonderful organist and a wonderful person. Widor would've shaken her hand. And for the record, I've heard her play this live MANY times at several different tempos...she plays according to the situation/room/acoustic/the instrument...WITH HER SOUL...and TO THE GLORY OF GOD.

    'Oh Lord, give me patience, but hurry...!!!'
    Glitz, glamour, sparkles, ludicrous, relentless speed for speed's sake, brashness, tackiness, the inability (or disinterest) in slowing down so as to let each of the notes reverberate properly in a huge space... I can imagine the Frenchman Widor burying his pained face in his hands, only being able to peer through his fingers at this spectacle. I'm amazed the pipes didn't all come crashing down around her after that display of destruction of a mighty piece that just sounds so much better played slower -as it ought to be. It is a great bit of pantomime though, or dare I say 'fun'.

    I see lots of comments about it being too fast. Is that based on personal preference? The music is in 4/2 time, marked allegro (qtr note=100). By my calculations that yields about 18 measures per minute. If you time her playing, she's almost eerily consistent. Personally, I prefer this piece a little on the quicker side.

    Diane Bish has a very attractive personality, and a will to reach out to people through the medium of good music. I nevertheless find this very capable rendering somewhat too fast for optimum clarity. In spite of this comment, I wish Ms. Bish to continue fruitfully her apostolate of the console: my very best wishes!

  • @PatrickTorsell
    @PatrickTorsell 9 лет назад +28

    Speed is certainly open to interpretation, and a faster speed is called for in a drier acoustic like this, and I actually don't mind this piece being played at a nice festive, exciting tempo. But when you play it so fast that you can't play the block chords in 16th notes as written (as we see Ms. Bish here, skipping the 16ths........), you might consider slowing down, at least to point where you can effectively play all the right notes! Don't misunderstand: I respect her abilities. In fact, she was actually my initial inspiration to learn the organ at age 8. But her tempo choice on this piece is just objectively out of hand, based on the reality that she can't even fit all the notes in!

    • @karlakor
      @karlakor 8 лет назад +4

      +bushmogulmaster I was going to make the same comment. The 16th-note chords are indistinguishable from the 8th-note rhythms simply because Bish cannot play them at this ridiculous tempo. As you stated, she leaves them out for the sake of speed, but her audience, in whose ears she can do no wrong, doesn't know the difference. Shameful!

    On the tempo issue, Widor composed it as a toccata and so allowed for technique; you could argue that few other musicians, if any, would be able to play at this tempo because of their technique, and there is nothing wrong with that. Thank you for sharing x

    I've heard it played at many different speeds, and somehow I still love it, even this way... Amazing dexterity, and somehow, while it did sort of evoke a carnival, it felt fast but somehow not quite 'frantic' for me, which I admire... Still, not how I would like to hear it. == After reading aitch749's fun comment, I laughed at the wonderful image that painted for me, and VinylToVideo's choice of the phrase "show piece" says it perfectly for me. I know it's /probably/ not entirely accurate to say this, but that made me think, "Well, the tempo might be fine... if Liszt had written it." == All in all, though, bless Ms. Bish for the joy it no doubt gave many who wouldn't know as well as y'all how it was intended, because they (like myself when I fell in love with this piece at St. Thomas Church 5th Ave NYC in 1971 at the age of 12) might have simply reveled in the triumphant, joyful, and, yes, gloriously bombastic feel of it, and not have minded one little bit how fast or slow it was played! Now I'm off to listen to the next video in line, “Ch. M. Widor plays his Toccata from V Symphony Op. 42 No. 1” to learn for myself what Monsieur Widor really wanted it to sound like!

    > The original recording of this piece by the composer himself made in 1932 I believe spanned roughly 6.58 minutes wheres as this interpretation is complete in roughly 5:48 which is around 18% quicker.
    > Is this really necessary? It is an interpretation after all.
    > Of course, the capacity of the pipes and their limits of vibration is a limiting factor as is the overall vision of the organist. Transcribing a piece for violin to the organ would obviously pose some restrictions with regard to overall time to completion. Here we are seeing a piece composed with a certain type of pipe organ in mind; this modern instrument can allow an organist to explore the tempos of the composition.
    > Why not let such a detail fall to the side and just listen to this glorious piece. That is what the members of this congregation did and they paid for the instrument; they were also evidently very pleased with the performance and with the quality of the instrument itself.

      If you're going to speak facts - it's best to get them correct!
      The actual music on Widor's recording lasts 6mins and 28secs and Bish's 4m 30secs (from 0:54 to 5:24 - she does a lot of talking!) That's 30% quicker!

      You do raise a good point. My real comment, however, was directed more to the type of instrument; that is, violin, pipe organ from 1930's, modern instrument. Thank you. LPP

    Now that was some agressive pedal-playing!
    I have heard some versions played a bit slower, which lends a different feeling to the piece, but this virtuoso interpretation is also interesting - the energy in it gives a "WOW!" experience.

  • @bglidden1962
    @bglidden1962 11 лет назад +1

    I wasn't commenting on the quality of the playing, just the fact that people claim that Widor meant it to be played slower. If so, then why did he put in the tempo markings that he did? Played as written, she nailed the tempo almost exactly. And yes, that probably did lead to the mistakes in the piece. It's hard enough to play at a much slower tempo!

    She is one fantastic organist and is a great ambassador for the instrument. Interesting tempo...but at this speed I don't hear or feel the 'maestoso' of the movement which contributes to its appealing grandeur. But did she show off the instrument and registration? Mission accomplished. Ms. Bish, please come back to Schenectady!

      There are lots of missing notes, 16th notes played the same as 8th notes, notes slurred together, and the final bars have the wrong time signature. In addition, there is absolutely no expression in this melée, apart from fast and loud.
      Listen to the recording of C-M Widor, the composer, playing it, and listen to how much more majestic and expressive it was than Ms Bish's maelstrom, even though he made a few wrong notes. The difference is striking.
