  • I hooked up the plow for the winter only to find the winch had quit working. In this video, I perform a basic trouble-shoot of the motor before dissembling and cleaning the brushes. The principle is the same for most electric motors and winches.

    Brushes are electrical contacts responsible for transferring electricity between a stationary and rotating component. Over time, wear and contamination create electrical resistance that diminishes motor efficiency and ultimately function.

    Question: Does your winch cable wind in over the top of the drum or under the drum - I just installed a winch in a 420 Rancher & the cable is currently set up to wind over the top, I found out the cable is only supposed to wind in from the bottom - My problem is: If I set the cable to wind in from the bottom, I run into a steep angle with clearance issues and the cable will rub heavily on the mounting plate and fairlead...Just thought I'd check with you on this - I'm setting up a snow plow also...thanks.

      Good question. I don't see why it would matter to wind it the other way. It will change the in/out switch orientation, but you can correct that by changing the wires at the motor. I'd go for best geometry.

      @@MasterJacks Yes, I'm gonna have to leave it top winding for clearance, otherwise it would chew up my cable...I was reading that they want it to wind under the drum because it has something to do with the winch's internal brake...Be sure to let me know how your rig is set up, cuz if you wind over the top of the drum and haven't had any problems then maybe I'll be okay too - Would I just need to reverse the pos. & neg. wires on the winch for in & out? I'm going to use the winch mostly for snow plowing so it won't be under super heavy load - Let me know how your rigged...Thanks & all the best.

      @@Brightmorningstar7 hmm, I forgot about the brake. You'll just have to try it and see if it holds the load. I wonder if you could build or buy a bracket that would extend the feed rollers out into a more optimal position? Mine does come out the bottom, but it didn't haven't anything causing me to trying something else. The motor feed wires can be reversed to change switch preference. Let me know what you find out!

      @@MasterJacks For now, I'm gonna leave it like it is & just reverse my lead wires for the switch - That's a good idea about tweaking the bracket configuration - Right now, I'm in the middle of moving, got a three acre place & I'm very stoked about it, this Honda Rancher 420 is my very first ATV, it's a 2013 with low miles / hrs...I got a KFI plow kit for it with the 54" blade - I got my mount plate on for the plow, but I'm gonna wait until I'm moved to add the tubes & blade...I'll let you know how the winch performs being top wound, until then, thanks for talking with me & God Bless...

    Ever have the whole motor pull out on you when you pull the sleeve off? That's what I did and now I can't thread it back together. Am I fucked

      I'm not sure of the particulars on your winch, but that end of the shaft is typically splined and supported by a bearing. The whole thing sometimes comes out. If you can't get it to align, you might have to take it apart and see what's preventing it from keying in. Wish I was more help.

    My wench slowly lets out cable when I have my plow hooked up any suggestions on what's wrong

    • @MasterJacks
      @MasterJacks  6 лет назад +2

      Not certain, but a few things to try. Make sure the winch cable is properly routed through the feed rollers. This affects the working angle of the cable to the plow which can overload the dynamic brake effect of the winch's internal gears. It could also be a capacity issue if the plow is too much of a load for the winch. If it's worked well in the past, and this is a new symptom, you'll probably have to open it up and see what you find inside. Let me know what you figure out!
