Just took apart my little 1500 lb. Super winch yesterday and it's even easier than that one to rebuild them. Mine is about 15 years old and still works like new yet. I've always cleaned them up inside and re-greased all the moving parts to keep them working properly. They do last a long time if you take care of them. Mine gets constant use lifting my snowplow all winter.
Good video, just one note of caution however, NEVER (EVER) use GASOLINE for a parts cleaner, it is way to volatile. Kerosene or diesel or parts cleaner is much safer and less toxic.
ok I need some help my buddy just gave me an old gorilla winch 3000-pound max, he had taken it apart and I think he lost that little gear on the engage disengage side are they kinda universal
I'm sorry I can't help you on this... when I did this rebuild I just made sure to carefully and slowly take everything apart. While I disassembled the winch, I made sure to have video, pictures and notes as to how everything was go go back together correctly. If you have a gear missing or needing to be replaced I couldn't tell you the best way to resolve that. Sorry
INB4 "why didn't you use Warn's grease?" lol. A lot of of people seem to burn up their winches on plows because they are always on the top wrap and they cycle them too much.
Hey Wayne- I'd guess that one of the gears didn't get seated or installed correctly if the freespool won't work. You will probably have to take it apart and see where the problem is. I used low-temp lithium grease. It's an off-white color. Hope that helps. -Tim
It helped me!!! I took mine apart and had the cylinder the wrong way until I watched your video. thanks!!
Excellent to see video made by just normal guy that is very helpful. Thx

My freespool isn't working after taking it apart. Any suggestions?
Also, what did you use to grease the motor windings??
