Thanks for the mention Nate! It’s nice to hear your thoughts about the situation. Definitely some ugly corporate decisions that are still ongoing with inconsistencies between the statements and the 1.1 draft. Never a better time or reason to explore some other RPGs, but the game of D&D 5e is still worth fun and worth playing-or learning for folks who just started :)
It is now the best time for newcomers to buy used 5e books. I feel the market is about to be inundated with used 5e.
@@bluebird3281 Rescue them from a trash can fire near you? JK.
I recommend everyone hang on to those books, because if you own them, you can play 5e forever, and you never have to spend another dime on WotC if you don't want to.
I don't understand why people who create games using WotC IP think they are entitled to use that IP to make money, without paying a royalty to WotC. That doesn't happen anywhere. I'm sure those independent creators would call foul if someone repackages their work for sale.
Agreed! Some corporate jerks are being greedy, but that DOES NOT make the game bad or worthy of cancellation.
@@tzkelley I am pretty new to the game and I did not even know people didn't pay royalties to WotC until the OGL fiasco started
If you are looking to get into D&D this year my advice would be to go for Old School Essentials or Castles and Crusades.
My favourite dnd/OSR games are C&C, OSE, bfrpg, index card and swords& wizardry
To be honest, I never watched this channel for the 'D&D' content, but for advice I could use for OTHER fantasy role playing games.
😊
Wizards/Hasbro has always and only ever been about money. I won't be giving them _any_ more of my mine. Their treatment of their employees and the community is reprehensible. And with this new OGL plus their latest announcement where they will 'release the core rules' is ludicrous. You _cannot_ copyright game rules. You simply can't. They created a problem. And then pretended to have a cure for a crisis they created. For all intents and purposes they have ...sh*t the bed. And I'm done with them.
Agreed, they laid down an agreement (2000) that content creators honored, and now they want to get their cash from them. The very people who are actually making them money. The dungeon dudes.
Such a betrayal.
Such dumb business practices.
So illegal too.
The jerks leaked the memo to get an idea of what the public would do (speculation)
They are clueless and dumb.
Sorry to hear that life has gotten you down; sounds like the changes at WotC haven't helped that. Hope your new year shapes up to be the best yet! Thanks for all your amazing videos (particularly the world map drawing)
When they announced the OGL 1.2 draft, I thought I might give them feedback, but after reading it I realised they are just too dense and it is futile tell them when they still have no clue what people don't like about their chances. Going forward they will not receive any money from me anymore. Hell, I originally considered still going to watch the upcoming movie, but at this point I am not even sure if I want to do that.
All I'm saying is that the ORC license and Pathfinder 2e is interesting......
Boycott DnD Movie 💲👎
"Buuh buuuh buuut! We want to save Dungeons & Dragons from teh racists!!!!111"
Now, Hasbro, you are just greedy fcks who never understood the spirit of tabletop rpgs as Gygax intended it.
I am just going to be a grognard and try to track down as many TSR era books as possible. And also pimp Glorantha, Elric, Hawkmoon and Mutant Chronicles.
@@ShebaFr 👏👍
@@Sethan777 Boycott for what? They already asked your opinion, why don't you just say what you would like to change in the ogl 1.2?
Dude I just found your map building tutorials (recommended to me by my step-son) and I'm blown away, watching you work and imagingin myself doing it brings me so much excitement! Thanks for all your hard work, I'm in the process of writing a set of fantasy books and imagining it all coming to life with maps like those really gets the mind wandering. I hope some day when I'm more confident I can begin to bring the world to life by creating a map using the techniques you teach.
OGL 1.2 has weasel words too... they include the words "perpetual" and "irrevocable", but then redefine them to not actual mean what you'd expect/hope them to mean. Also, you have to provide feedback through D&DB so, if you've cancelled your subscription, you'd have to sign up again and that'll boost their metrics to allow them to say to their shareholders, "Look, people are flooding back to WotC and D&D."
While the OGL directly affects creators, it's also worth considering how the OGL changes will affect players. The exodus of 3rd party creators means we can expect less D&D related content and more content from other game systems in the future. So it might be worth learning a different game that stands to grow from this.
Totally!
THAT.
@@WASD20 did you ever try to create your own game? 😁
Thank you for your open and concise video. I'm glad you gave your opinion, I take your words for there worth. Thank you
they're
I'd like to add my application for your thoughtfulness by pointing out this is not your area of expertise & and sharing your reasons for not commenting as quickly as some members of the community wished you would have. I think it's an exemplary model of thoughtful restraint that we need to see more often in the era of social med8a.
So heartbreaking for the fans and creative staff at WOTC. Your video of alternatives is super helpful. Thank you for all you do.
Great balanced video, thanks! it's hard to see D&D dragged through the mud by company executive/lawyers who are either too distant from the Community or too immature in business to be making these decisions.
Well said, really liked the tone of your video and how concisely you got the point across. The analogy of having found out how awful your boss is perfectly sums up where we are in this mess now. Thanks for taking the time to do this, and I honestly hope the skies are a bit clearer for you now mate 👍
Thank you, Paul! Very much appreciated.
Whew. Thanks, Nate! I was worried you were going to come out soft on WOTC, and I'm glad you didn't try to diminish the lies and the damage done.
Looking forward to your videos that feature and expand on alternatives to 5e. In your previous video on 5 alternatives, you mentioned Basic Fantasy RPG and Fantasy AGE. Not sure if you’ve heard but the Basic Fantasy project is currently in the process of excising the OGL/SRD from the current edition and will be releasing a Basic Fantasy 4thEd soon. As for Fantasy AGE, a new 2nd Edition is going to come out as PDF in February followed by the release of the physical books. Would be cool if you could cover these two when they are both out. Keep up the good work.
Basic Fantasy RPG is GREAT for that old-school feel without having to deal with THAC0(which isn't hard but looking back it's just WEIRD now)! Plus it's ALL FREE, unless you want physical books then you only pay printing and shipping costs so it's SUPER CHEAP!
I haven't looked into any of the AGE systems so I can't speak to them much!
Wow. Major respect. This is actually a D20 channel for actual new players. Awesome.
Wow, VERY nice summary. I really like the analogy to striking an employer and coming to understand they are just greedy **** and wondering if you can continue working there. That grabs people - that makes it relatable. Thank you!
I've bailed on both the movie and Baldur's Gate 3. Nate, you are the first youtuber I watched when learning to play D&D 3 years ago. I still have my hand drawn continent maps in my closet. Sadly, we have decided to move onto Pathfinder as the system is much, much more refined. Thank you for everything, I will remain a fan and a viewer always.
I wouldn't say sadly. I would say happily! Pathfinder is a great game and paizo is a cool company
Great and concise video, though I'd argue the biggest issue with 1.2 is that they still have the ability to change it. They've used tricky language that implies they don't, but they still can. Most of the concessions they're making aren't actually changing anything either. Releasing copyright on the mechanics for example, when mechanics aren't copyrightable to begin with, so it's akin to saying they're no longer claiming sole ownership of the Sun.
Thank you so much for your explanation. I really couldn't follow what was happening with D&D until now. You explained it the best way possible for me. Thank you very much
One thing that's wild about this situation is how fast it is moving. Several people reporting on this have had to add post-video updates, and even then the next day that information could be out of date. A lot of damage has been done, with several publishers moving away from D&D and others accelerating their internal plans (like MCDM) for creating alternatives. We won't know the full extent of the damage for a while yet, but you know its bad when major news outlets and groups outside of the D&D community continue to report on this train wreck.
As Soul Asylum once sang: "Runaway train never coming back. Wrong way on a one way track."
Careful, aging yourself with THAT reference! ;)
Though I think I might have to go listen to some SA today! It's also very fitting for what's going on right now!
Of note, there are a bunch of other companies signing up for Paizo’s ORC idea. Including Chaosium…the makers of Call of Cthulhu. Which is amazing
I started playing D&D in 1978. What WotC and Hasbro have tried to do is unforgivable. If you don’t play D&D, don’t start. Learn Pathfinder 2.0 or any of a million other games. My family switched to Powered by the Apocalypse system with Monster of the Week.
If what WoTC did is so unforgivable, did we have the same train of thought with TSR and their antics in the 80s and 90s? If so, people wouldn’t have stuck around played 3.0, 3.5, Pf1 and now 5e. Find a game you and your group enjoy and play it. But standing on a hill and yelling that WoTC is the evil overlord is tiring and incorrect. They’ve been 100x better to the community than TSR could ever try with a natural 20 performance check to fool us back then.
@@tj1993rx7 They have?! I don't recall TSR ever saying "HEY! We gave you this thing for FREE but now you have to pay us and we might steal your material too so we don't actually have to do any real work!" Now, I'm not trying to condone what TSR did but I also won't pretend WotC/Hasbro is somehow "better"!!! F*** D&D, WotC, AND Hasbro!
There are PLENTY(millions is QUITE an exaggeration but there are a LOT) of games, and MANY are actually BETTER than 5E, which has just become increasingly poor quality and terrible, perhaps it ALWAYS was it just took us all different times to realize it, I was frustrated back around the Ravnica book, it didn't help me figure out SHIT going on in that world, I had to use a freaking wiki page to figure out history and people and get ideas for a campaign! This recent stuff, coupled with them doing an eerily similar thing with 4E but worse now, is just the last straw, the camel is USELESS now! I suppose we could eat it... maybe, it's just going to be miserable otherwise!
Hey. All Pathfinder 2e rules content is free! You don't even have to buy new books, except for the arts and lore which are also awesome.
It isn't so much hatred for D&D. After all, it's just game mechanics. The justified hate for WotC, Hasbro, and the infection of prior Microsoft executives has damaged the brand of D&D, but that is different. I abandoned WotC with the roll out of the fourth edition.
Nate, sorry to hear things have been tough on the personal front. Question, are you going to put out a second video playing The One Ring?
Thanks, Josh. The One Ring game was great, and I hope to get back to it at some point. However, my personal life has made it really difficult to stream and maintain a schedule.
I’m OK. I have lots of support, but just need to scale back on some things for a bit.
The whole "hateful discriminatory content" clause is an instant deal breaker as long as THEY and THEY ALONE get to define - on a whim - what those terms mean.
As it is that clause means they can immediately terminate your license at any time for virtually any reason - they can simply say 'we think your content is discriminatory'. You have no recourse whatsoever and no grace period applies.
Whoever uses that OGL is at the whim of WotC. You definitely can't build any kind of business on that.
I went back and watched your 5 alternatives video. In 20/20 hindsight I love the comment "...if D&D should magically disappear". I would update to 'tragically' disappear since -- using the classical sense of tragedy -- they look to be failing due to their own faults.
Great video, you outlined all the important points about this mess in a fair, level headed way.
In Germany the RPG most people played for the last 40 years has been "The Dark Eye / Das schwarze Auge", a non OGL game, while we D&D players have always been a minority and their publisher has committed this game and all others they have created e.g. Hexxen to the ORC as well and has promised to finance the legal adaption of the ORC to german laws for all german companies as well. So even as a D&D player I can only recommend that you might take a look into the Dark Eye as well. It has the most detailed and living campaign world of any RPG I know of, being worked out lovingly with a consistent timeline spanning every adventure published and it's consequences to the continent of Aventurien for 40 years by it's publisher and it's fans.
Great video, you synthesized all the info about the topic in a simple, clear and accurate way.
It would be great to see a video for Shadow of the Daemon Lord / Weird Wizard.
Greetings from México.
Your analogy of the BOSS is spot on. I don't want to work with WoTC anymore. Moving over to Paizo myself.
I’m super new to the RPG DND world. Thank you for sharing this info with everyone. Lots to consider for sure
Here is a hug. Thank you for the wonderful content!
My family and I picked up a lot of the d&d stuff a few months ago as we have been doing a Sunday game each week. I’m bummed that WotC has been burning bridges. But I really like exploring new games. So this video was perfect timing for me.
I just started playing dnd in December. It’s how I found your channel. I’m so new I don’t even know if I like dnd yet. So, I’m going to check out Pathfinder too. Maybe I will check out several others before I settle on something. Not sure what Hasbro’s ultimate goal is but their actions make me far less likely to commit to dnd going forward.
For all of the experienced players that think all this controversy might scare away a new player: No way! This actually seems like the best time to start playing table top rpg’s. So many people are talking about so many other systems. I’m learning about a lot of things I never knew existed. It’s “the churn” from The Expanse. The churn changes our world whether we want it to or not. The churn also creates opportunities.
Hasbro's ultimate goal is to actually own and make money from the game, getting rid of the open sources that made money off their product with no monetary shares. You know, what almost every other company, big or small, does. If you plan to play the game without trying to sell your own line of their product, your good. I was on board with the rebellion at first, but the complaining is getting tedious. This is about who owns a product, the company or community?
Another great video Nate. I'm in the same boat. I really love 5th edition, and my groups are still playing it. But I'm not purchasing any more official WoTC products. Going third party for anything I think my games need. Still want to support all those creators who worked hard on great 5th edition supplements. But my groups are also going to be running some one shots of other systems to see if we want to switch to something else. As you say, the trust is broken, and it isn't coming back any time soon.
Just wanted to mention the VTT issue, currently they are stating old stuff under 1.0a will be supported to outside companies like roll20, but with the roll out of new OGL appears they are not going to allow it is my impression forcing you eventually not being able to use with other companies when they update stuff.
Playing Mythas with my grandkids, Wasn't too crazy about D&D for a looong time and 4E pretty much made me leave the hobby for 10 years. Happy to be doing any other TTRPG
I wish they would print out more hardcovers and stuff for me to buy honestely. I like the dice sets, like the candlekeep one, and also the player aids that I can hand out at the table, such as the rule book sets and character token tins. MORE STUFF PLEASE!!!!
Hey Nate,
Hope you’re doing well and thanks for your insights.
Well said Nate! Really enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work no matter what the future holds.
For me it's quite simple. I choose to support a company that has zero drama and provides unwavering support for their community. A company that has "done it right" since the beginning. That company is Paizo. They have always been 100% behind their community and very engaged with said community from day one. They continue to do the right thing when faced with changes to the OGL and will challenge those decisions legally if need be. Well done Paizo for always being there for the community and I look forward to many more years of fun and comradery.
What a sad mess. I'm still feeling the sting from the Lorraine Williams days, so I'm dipping from WOTC forever. The DnD roller coaster went off the rails for the last time for this kid.
Wow! Well said! But, I can tell you're old 😁
Nate, I hope your personal life stuff is getting better or changing for the good. Love you.
My favorite RPG's: 1-Cypher, 2-Teenagers From Outer Space, 3-Gamma World 4E(not based on D&D 4E), 4-All Flesh Must be Eaten, 5-Battlelords of the 23rd Century, 6-Pathfinder 1E, 7-5E, 8-Palladium system, 9-AD&D, 10-Shadow of the Demon Lord and 11-Star Frontiers
The other problem people are having is their vagueness on what constitutes as harmful or hateful content and how does that effect adult oriented content going forward.
Yeah, from the company that created space monkey minstrels and thinks orcs and Drow are black people
Per the new OGL, harmful (or hateful or discriminatory) is whatever WotC says it is. It effectively means they can remove any content they don't like for whatever reason.
Also note that this doesn't only apply to the D&D related content - the author making a Tweet WotC doesn't like is enough, according to how this draft of the OGL is written.
At this point, I don't think this mess will end before some actual rulings have been made in a court of law. And then it will still take some time for everyone to adapt.
If WotC doesn't walk back on the new OGL, people will 'adapt' by not making any new content for D&D.
@@harmless6813 Perhaps, perhaps not. Hasbro has started a fight for power over the market and let's not forget that it's not far from being a monopoly in terms of market share. I do hope, however, that the legal framework will continue to keep the community open.
@@sirmclovin9184 I don't see how any sane person could build a business - however small - on the terms in the current draft of the new OGL. It would be much too risky. People will instead make content compatible with other games that offer a better license.
Correction: Paizo is not making a new system. They are spearheading the Open RPG Creative License and stated that Pathfinder 2e does not use any content from the SRD and didn't need the OGL at all.
Hello. Personally I'm done with wizards of the coast. I stopped buying mtg cards I have 2 set cubes, and I
I have lots of dnd books I've bought. won't get rid of the stuff I enjoy them but. will not buy any more from them. The current game I'm running is for dnd 5e once it's over which should be about a year. We play only once a month. I will be switching to a new system. Interested in kolbot presses black flag project. As my first choice for a new system. pathfinder is second. But who knows what other games might be introduced in the mean time.
Love that fact that you explained what it is and do not “hate” while you do it!!! Good job!!!
Great video. I think you should either post this for non-Patrons to see or make another video spotlighting the arguments for playing other Fantasy RPGs.
Thanks Patrick! This one is a public video. I just posted it on Patreon as well.
Just play ICRPG!
Nicely worded video Nate, good stuff as always.
Great information and summery of the whole thing I'm sure it will help new players! Also you can still play D&D just get a clone of it like the upcoming game by Dungeon Coarch called so far DC20 or stuff on sale/used esplecly older editions. Or you could just play with people who already have the books and just brng you dice, and other supplies not made by wotc.
I'd been meaning to get into D&D for a while. I picked a very strange time to finally do it. Over the past couple of months I bought 3 5e books and joined my first campaign online.
I do like the game though and getting into it has made me aware that there are other RPGs that I think I might like such as Pathfinder or GURPS.
As someone who has started dming. players with some experience will choose characters that are only in the phb and will likely run on the expanded rules from it as well. so the box sets are probably more ideal with all fresh players
FateForge and Level Up are excellent 3rd party D&D games where you can get a full rules set without having to purchase a single WotC product!
4:48 it's worth pointing out that Solasta and KOTOR are *not* on the OGL, they each have individual licence agreements with WOTC. I think William SRD went into more detail on this.
Ah, interesting. Thanks for clarifying!
I was pissed off when all this started and was ready to move on to pathfiner 2nd edition. But then I got over it. I will continue to play D&D, but I will always remember this stunt they tried to pull on us, and will be wary of that in the future. I get they want to make more money, and for any business that's a valid concern, but when you try and do it so underhandedly that you have to walk it back due to the backlash they received, that's something else entirely. I truly believe they tried to sneak this one under the radar right after Christmas time when many people may not be paying attention, and that's sneaky and chaotic evil.
yeah i've just decided to keep playing D&D and instead just use whatever resources i already have. i dont want to stress myself out over learning a new system - that and pathfinder doesnt have a warlock so that was an instant turn off
Being a German who started RPGs in '84, with the German DSA it is possible that I'm biased. However, I have, on and of, bought D&D stuff since the BECMI edition's red box came out. My 5e collection is large, besides the fact that I rarely play D&D. I use the D&D stuff mainly as inspiration and the 5e products are nice to read with great and inspiring art.
Anyway, if people think about playing a different RPG I would advise looking not only for systems that are basically D&D clones like PF2, OSE, DCC and many other great games. I would suggest looking for a system that is "very" different. Just to broaden your horizon and taste something really new.
- D&D and its clones are all very class centric so look for a skill-centric game
- test a game that does not use many different dice like D&D but uses only one or two different dice.
- look into a game that uses the dice roles differently (rolling under instead of over etc.)
And most importantly:
Never feel obligated to use a background together with its rules. Most RPGs come with a world and often that world is not to one's taste.
D&D's Forgotten Realms or TDE's Aventuria have tons of material describing the world in the finest detail, those finely granulated worlds are around but there are also other worlds with room for almost anything one can imagine. Also, homebrew worlds are a most common thing ask your GM or friends or the owner if you may use his world as a basis for yours, you could even develop a world of your own, alone or together with your friends.
When looking for an alternative to D&D do not just look for a different company, look for different ideas and concepts as well.
Can't wait for Paizo's ORC license. Perfectly named as well haha
Ever since the early 1980's when the Wizards of the Coast came on the scene I have had doubts about them. The first thing they did back then was to insult the estate and existence of Gary Gyrax (the original creator if AD&D). They broke my trust decades because of those acts! This does not surprise me at all. I still referee an Edition 2 campaign group (Demon Temple Book Cover). Current campaign needs online players.
Wow, that Editor Nate from the Future guy has some amazing superpowers! He was able to leap into the middle of a video, like Neo hacking the Matrix! 😀 Seriously, great video Nate, thanks for taking the time to put it out, given everything else going on. It's a good summary of an online melee which I've found a bit bewildering at times
2:09 Stormwreck island starter kit is new to me I’ve never seen that one before yet.
Yeah came out this past summer only in target. Everywhere else in Oct I think.
The "Dragon Warriors" core rulebook is Pay What You Want on DrivethruRPG right now. Just sayin'.
My friend bought a year subscription to DND beyond the WEEK before the leaks!!!
😖
Firstly, thanks for using my comment in your video. That's a first for me :)
Secondly, I stand by what I wrote. I really don't think anyone should support a company like WotC. As much as I love D&D that initial "we all win" statement completely broke the trust. It's the worst, most horribly tonedeaf PR statement I've ever read. Packed with manipulation and outright falsehoods. Like, how stupid do they think we are?
Now they've put out other statements and yes, they are ... less terrible. But honestly, how can you believe anything they say at this point? They have lost thousands of subscribers are completely panicking. They'll tell us anything right now. And they've shown us their true faces. It will take massive changes (including a complete replacement of the WotC leadership) for me to consider buying a D&D product ever again.
There are hundreds of amazing games out there created for players by players. By companies who understand that D&D and RPGs like it aren't really products. They're a culture. You can't own a culture. And the second you try to you've lost.
So many games out there... The world is your oyster, folks! And guess what?... Some of these games are even better!
Warhammer fantasy rolpay 2ed i 4ed oraz Pathfinder 2ed is nice to try beyond DnD 5e. I now start playing in Warhammer 2ed and I'm happy to branch out.
The nice thing about 5e is that I don’t need to give WotC a cent to play it. Been buying my books secondhand for years, rely on 3rd party stuff for the rest. I’ve tried Pathfinder, not really my brand of crunch, but I’m glad ppl are branching out to new systems in general. There’s a whole world out there!
3:34 More then fair and you don't upload all that regularly so it didn't matter... Still good to see you and hear you talk about it.
For those who are new to the game I would use the basic rules that are included in the starter set and I would look into kobold press they are working on a game system that at least so far looks like it's supposed to be very similar to what dungeons & dragons is now l in fact they cannot legally called themselves dungeons & dragons but it's dungeons and dragons. But they are going to be under something called the Orc. It's a gaming license that basically says even if one day they become as big as wizards of the Coast is now they cannot do sleazy things with their open game license like what WoTC is trying to do now.
Hi I'm thinking about getting Into dnd I've played war hammer 4k with my siblings for a very long time. I've played Skyrim and other elder scrolls too on the Xbox. So is this a game for me?
Sure! Sounds like you might enjoy it. Lots of other great tabletop RPG options out there too.
@@WASD20 thanks I'll have to check it out i watched some of your videos today and I'm trying to learn about DnD and trying to understand it.
I would love to hear your thoughts on GLoG.
What are some of the other small alternatives?
Does this only affect 5e and newer editions from there?
Would love to see a video about Kobold Press Project Black Flag. It seems like they are trying to create a system that is compatible with 5e content. That would be great for anyone with a bookshelf full of 5e stuff.
I will NEVER buy any WotC products again.
Nate, we've got your back no matter what happens. Just keep putting out your amazing videos!
I won't be supporting WOTC in the future no matter what they do at this point. I WILL be supporting 3rd party creators like yourself.
Too much greed was on their mind and now that it's out there they really need to back track and make up for this
Hey thanks for the info man
Thank you Nate!
I’m new and I’m here for the roleplay aspect, I even make d&ds that arn’t even based on fantasy, maybe even based on other pop culture things, like Pokémon, yugioh, Harry Potter. That’s good, it’s more open, more roleplay options. So what’s different? But d&d is the most open rpg. You can’t own an idea, you can’t own a gaming system, not like a console.
I've always wanted to play DnD however I'm only getting my first chance to experience it next month, however i'm worried about others not wanting to play due to the controversy. Is it truely that bad of an idea to start?
For the players, there is no problem to start D&D 5e, the Essentials Box is a perfect entry: enough complete for a cheap price. Also, even if you purchase BRAND NEW BOOKS in your FLGS, you pay the game shop, not WotC/Ha$bro, and you will help the game shop with your money: the books are already paid by the game shop. In short, play D&D 5e, have fun with your friends!! That's what a RPG is done for!!
Yeah, if you want to play don’t worry about all craziness in the news too much. If your players are all newer they likely wont care either.
Though I will say buying from your local shop is fine and all, but will actually help WotC as the shop will now order stuff from WotC to replace it. Not a huge deal, but just wanted to add a different perspective to what @frederic MANSON is saying.
Great take, love your videos Nate!
Thanks!
This was a thoughtful and reasoned take. I understand you not wanting to dive in blind. It is almost always good to take a breath and assess before you spout off (and then have to walk it back).
Having said that, Hasbro won`t get another nickel off me unless they make the OGL truly open and irrevocable. I won`t fault you if you do buy, but I won`t.
PSA: Remember that the 5e product at your FLGS has already been paid for. Not buying WotC products from them is not hurting Wizards, it is hurting your local store. If you want it, buy it. But be crystal clear that this is the *last* 5e product that you are buying, and please don`t ship in more on my behalf, because I am not buying it.
Taking notes from Games Workshop, eh? That being said, 40k Roleplay is still 🔥.
Thanks for explaining it so well, it's pretty unfortunate to hear =/
Whatabout designing our own game? have anyone tried? how difficult it is?
I think a more apt metaphor would be if you swapped out your terrible boss with an abusive step-parent… cause there’s absolutely no monetary incentives to stay and this is nothing if not deeply personal and dare I say it traumatic… some of us will stay simply cause we don’t know anything else. And anyone who doesn’t feel confident enough to strike out on their own will be forced to move in with their weird older siblings until they either make a home for themselves or find some way to reconcile with their abuser.
People are hating on WotC, not D&D.
To be fair, some people _do_ hate on D&D - but they did so before this mess even started. ;-)
Yeah, I see it as hate for the D&D brand because of the way it's being managed by WotC. But yeah - maybe I just went for what looks better on a thumbnail. :)
I don't even recognise d&d anymore in some of the new book releases. Radiant Citadel? Keys of the Golden Vault? Spelljammer should have been a smash hit.
I'm looking at DMsGuild and they are releasing killer content. Al Qadim and Dark Sun proxies, extentions to the Eberron lore. Adventure Campaigns with Anoleths, Drow and Mindflayers...
I recommend checking out Dungeon Universalis.
@Nate, completely unrelated to the OGL, how is the Provoker team? You are the ONLY one still posting things, and I hope you are doing good. But how is Matt, Barker, Tim and Mike? They haven't posted in almost a year, and even though I'm just a random guy I worry about you guys, you are all Hero's in my heart, Hero's to my childhood and that it can still be lived through stories as an adult.
I really hope provokers continues to happen. Season 1 was a tremendous inspiration to me to become a DM, and Season 2 I can't get enough of. I love the players (and DM) and I love the story! (and I know I am saying is aloud, and possibly no one will care, but I am sure, Sander would be "glad to have this knowledge" ) *season II, episode 2, 1hr and 1 minute in.*
Thanks, Jesse! The crew is doing well. We still talk quite a bit.
Me and Tim and Matt played in a game recently on my live channel: ruclips.net/video/21Nw_xbxjb8/видео.html
It was going to be a small campaign, but my wife and I have been navigating a separation recently, and I had to lay off for a bit. (Yes, it's sad, and it's been a hard couple months!) Hopefully we'll get back to that campaign at some point.
But yeah, the guys are still plugging away on Absolute Tabletop stuff, working on their Kickstarter fulfillment for the Battle for Archtor's vault at the moment.
I'm a second edition ASD&D type so when I see new editions of basically the same game it's irritating when you hear the sales pitch. KISS is sometimes an acronym that stands for keep it simple stupid. It's a rule in business and I wish the creators of new D&D products would keep this in mind.
I hadn't heard of the draft getting released yet. I'll have to go look that up later. But while I didn't read the text in the video, it seems that they are still deauthorizing the OGL1.0a license in this new draft. Didn't they already say that their next draft wouldn't do that? Either way, it seems like too little too late though. The only course of action they could have taken to actually restore the community's trust in them would have been to keep the OGL1.0a but add in a clause making it explicitly irrevocable. I'm looking forward to seeing how Paizo does with their ORC license. Especially with their stated intention to make the ORC license an independent foundation in the same way as the Linux Foundation.
"But while I didn't read the text in the video, it seems that they are still deauthorizing the OGL1.0a license in this new draft. Didn't they already say that their next draft wouldn't do that?"
Yes, they still plan to deauthorize the OGL 1.0a and no, they didn't say they wouldn't do that.
They only agree that the OGL 1.0a will still be applicable for content that was originally published under that license. Which means all new content would _have_ _to_ use the new OGL.
It is still not clear they even _can_ deauthorize the old OGL - but to settle that case will need a law suit - and Hasbro has _a_ _lot_ of money for lawyers.
Echoing the sentiments of others - grew up on it, left for a while and was coming back, now not sure I want to LOL Good to see you though Nate, and thanks for the content consumption :)
Very pleased to hear your take on this whole clusterfrag! Thanks, Nate!
I've been finding pathfinder 2e really fun
Honestly we should just fully stop supporting wotc. They dont deserve our money anymore.
I'll still get into it. $100 for 12-18 months of play is worth it.
You do NOT send contracts, let alone dated contracts, with a draft. WotC is lying threw their teeth and we lost D&D but better is coming. NOTE: Pathfinder 2.0 and StarFinder do not use the SRD and are unaffected by anything WotC tries to do.
I guess I'm not getting it. My Pathfinder 2E has the OGL printed in the back with reference to the SRD. I assume the 2E core rulebook has nothing from the SRD- but 1st Edition *did*... my brain hurts.🧠
@@ddobrien1 Paizo said they didn't even need to publish PF2E under OGL rules since they moved substantially away from the OGL's SRD with the new ruleset. Future prints won't feature the OGL license in it but more than likely will feature the ORC license.
@@ddobrien1 Paizo stated that they put the OGL 1.0 in Pathfinder 2.0 and Starfinder so other people could use it to make compatible material. In other words you can publish a Starfinders adventure just like every other 3rd party publisher.
Also, Paizo is no longer making Pathfinder 1.0 content so it doesn't matter.
@@samanthalacroix2687 thanks, that's good to know!
