Fantasy Flight Games moved their RPG products to a sub company named Edge Studios. So the star wars RPG as well as L5R and Genesys are now published by Edge studios. But indeed Edge haven‘t got a large output number in the last few months.
But if you nominate the Star Wars RPG from FFG - there is another system that should be mentioned as well, and that is Genesys. It uses the same rules and dice mechanics and it is usaboe for any genre or setting. And it also contains a few settings that can be used of it - Realms of Terrinoth (fantasy), Shadows of the beanstalk (near future / cyberpunk) and Embers of the Imperium (Space Opera). But in the main thing, Genesys is a perfect system for world builders. It comes with own dice but the Star Wars dice are compatible because only the icons on the dice changed to somewhat neutral…

Awesome list, I'll definitely be looking at some of them.
I can highly recommend Ten Candles. It's a system solely suited for oneshots. Cool, pretty loose form, prepare for some pretty tense moments and interesting and sometimes shocking choices made by the players, but it's highly flexible. Also, don't expect you character to make it through the session :)

highly, highly HIGHLY recommend this game! Its so simple and accessible for anyone to play it, and it does an incredible job in conveying atmosphere without even saying a word; candles, card burning, and my personal favorite, the unique dice system I like to refer to as "bleeding dice".

This is a game my group plays at Halloween and its a lot of fun. As the GM giving up so much narrative control to the players. Just make sure to order it early if you want the book and not just the PDF. I believe it's just one guy who wrote, produced, and ships the book so it takes a little while to get the book.

I will always recommend Don't Rest Your Head, a horror game about insomniacs whose lack of sleep has made something in their mind click, and now they can suddenly see all the hidden entrances to the Mad City. Also they are being chased by nightmares and have madness-inducing powers. What I love about the game is that using your powers risks a PC going mad, but not using your powers means you can't defend against the nightmares. And the system itself drives this risk-reward tension beautifully.

Played Alice is Missing multiple times. Some online, some in person. Have to say, I liked the online sessions more. I see, the whole card management thing was easier in person, but it felt way more immersive for me to not see my friends face at the table, when I'm texting with the ingame character. First time was online with strangers and it was the most immersive RPG experience I ever had. Awesome game. But have to say, despite the stories being somehow different each time you play it, the mysteriousness gets lost the more you play it. Similar to reading a book twice. It's still fun, but it's not the same experience.
    Very cool game suggestions👍

I would highly recommend Ironsworn, it is a mixed success game like the mosters of the week. You can get the PDF for free.
The main thing it does well is you can play without a GM and even can play it solo which is super fun! There is a scifi version of the game which is kinda like a 2e of the game but that one isnt free. And there is a dungeon expansion called Delve which lets you GM the dungeon in more details than the original games recommended

Microscope RPG. It allows you to create a World together (and its history), by adding to it block by block. It can go in pretty unpredictable directions, but it always feels fun to see something you've had a hand in creating evolve before your eyes.

Great list! DREAD is super fun to play, and I ran one-shot of it for Halloween in 2022. We had a blast with it. In terms of other games that are closer to being D&D adjacent, I recommend the following:
    1. Goblin Quest. This uses a D6 system; it has a more comedic fantasy vibe and is made for one-shot games. A GM is optional. The players all create a handful of goblin characters and come up with the meta-narrative together at the beginning. Then, the group plays it out. Goblins die easily and are immediately replaced by the next one in line.
    2. InSpectres. This uses a D6 system; it's comedic sci-fi and has a more Ghostbusters meets Men In Black vibe. This game can be used for one-shots or campaigns. The players create together a paranormal investigation franchise then go on investigations to catch ghosts, find aliens, etc.
    3. Viking Death Squad. This uses primarily D6s; it's apocalyptic, pulpy sci-fi with a Doom meets Terminator vibe in the distant future of Earth. VDS is good for one-shots and short campaigns. Cybernetic aliens have invaded Earth while at the same time a portal to Hell has opened up. The players are resistance fighters trying to survive and thwart the bad guys.

I've been playing a game called Animon Story for a few months now. It's a Pokemon/Digimon pastiche where you're a kid with an elementally themed companion "monster." It's very simple to play and run, and it's been the breath of fresh air that my group needed after playing a lot of D&D.

The Labyrinth and Dark Crystal Adventure Games by River Horse are really underrated gems. Simple rules with a focus more on creative problem solving than brutal combat. I ran parts of a Dark Crystal game and the simplicity and snappyness of the rules inspired me to base my own TRPG off of it.
Another game similar to Star Wars in its focus on narrative dice is Legend of the Five Rings 5e, which was also moved to Edge Studios along with the rest of FFGs RPGs.

  • @wasitum

An interesting one I love to play is Stealing Stories for the Devil, by Monte Cook. You are playing "Liars", people from the future who can "lie" to reality (change an object, a small event in the past, or people's behavior). The game is a heist in 3 acts : act 1 the GM gives the information about the object they have to steal, and the players plan the whole heist, top to bottom, they decide everything about it in a back and forth discussion with the GM. They come up with the setting, and the plan of action. Act 2 : they proceed with the heist, and the GM can incorporate some plot twists as hurdles, where they'll need their lies to get out unscathed. Act 3 is the climax of act 2 where s**t hits the fan, and a big situation changing event occurs, and they have to complete the heist and get out.
It's a very intersting game, with no prep, and endless replayablilty. Heavily recommend

Fiasco is great! I bought Tales From the Loop 6 or 7 years ago, but have yet to play it. I’ll probably get to it soon. As a DM/GM, I find myself looking for alternatives because even though I love D&D, I’m starting to burn out quicker. Free League’s Alien RPG is also a lot of fun. We just finished the starter adventure last night. One of my players is going to run Dragonbane for a bit until I’m back in the groove and I can’t wait to roll Darkwing Duck!

    • @matthewconstantine5015
      @matthewconstantine5015 5 месяцев назад +1

If you like Dragonbane and haven't already tried Basic Roleplaying in one of its various forms (Call of Cthulhu, RuneQuest, etc.), you may want to do so. Dragonbane has a lot of 2nd Ed RuneQuest in its DNA, which is pretty much the core of Basic Roleplaying. I'm hoping to try Dragonbane myself; maybe sometime this year.

    • @GaretheDen

@@matthewconstantine5015 I've just started digging through the Dragonbane core book. I do like the streamlined character creation and I fully intend on just rolling dice for every aspect of my character (although I really do want to just make Darkwing Duck). We've considered checking out Call of Cthulhu, but haven't hit it up quite yet.

  • @matthewconstantine5015
    @matthewconstantine5015 5 месяцев назад +1

I love Tales from the Loop (as well as the Alien RPG from the same company).
One that I really like, though it's a touch expensive, is A Cool and Lonely Courage. It's all about women in the SOE, going behind enemy lines during WWII. When the game starts, you've been captured. You draw playing cards to help create the story of how you ended up there (and what eventually happens to you). Were you betrayed? Did you fall in love? Were you injured? Will you die or manage to escape?
One that I've only played once, but am hoping to try again soon, and has a new edition, is Pendragon. Playing knights in King Arthur's court, dealing with the intricacies of honor that often don't gel with our contemporary understandings of it, worrying about renown and trying to keep your passions balanced...or not, as well as playing generations of a family. You may start as one character, only to continue as their daughter, and eventually grandson, all while the epic story of Le Morte d'Arthur & The Once & Future King is raging around you. I'm not even that into Arthurian legend, but I've heard so much amazing stuff about it, and it was, apparently RPG luminary Greg Stafford's proudest achievement. So, I figure I should dig in.

I'm gonna throw my hat in the ring, and suggest 'Inhuman Conditions'. Thematic, tense, inspired by Blade Runners Voight-Kampf Test... And a session usually lasts for five minutes. Standard game can only be played between two players (one's the investigator and the other one is a human, or robot), but there's a variant that can be played by a crowd.
The best part? The game is now in public domain (or was it creative commons?), so you can print all of the cards and manual for free on-line. Shut Up & Sit Down has a review of the game, too.

Thank you for that, it's quite interesting and I didn't know about most of these games.
I'm one of the folks who like the older Star Wars rulesets. I started TTRPG with Star Wars d6 some 20 years back and still love it. It's a d6 dice-pool game, skill-based, and great for EU adventures (think Andor). The only issue is it predates the prequels sothe Force is very limited - no jedis there basically.
In terms of games where everyone's kind of a GM, there is also "I Hit It with my Axe", where players take turn gm-ing for each other's adventure. It uses dice and a resource (tokens) that is spent to face various challenges. Some of these simpler, shorter games really have wacky rules (see Honey Heist, Everyone is John, or All Outta Bubblegum for instance) and easy to pick up.
Anyway, I enjoyed hearing your opinion on these. :)

  • @WendyGa

Some of my favourites which aren't D&D:
    - Alien: uses a similar system to Tales from the Loop, but focused on the deadliness of the xenomorphs
    - Broken Compass: a dice pool system with Yatzhee style successes that emulates the adventures of Lara Croft, Indiana Jones or even pirates or Jules Verne style adventurers.
    - We Deal in Lead: The Dark Tower setting and mood, imagined as a RPG. That's all I needed to know to get it. :)

I can see what you mean. Your input won’t affect the ending, but to me it’s about the journey, and not the destination. in the journey, you tell stories of who Alice was to you in your own way, and you piece together a picture of who this girl was from the others in the group as well.
And there’s your character, and the others. You get very loose guidance about relationships to Alice and personality and such, but mostly it’s up to you to determine that, and interacting in that way w/ all the characters was a lot of fun for me.

Another duo game for a relationship I like is Eyes on the prize where you and your partner in crime/the other player are in a fake marriage trying to achieve some sort of goal together by acting married where its a delicate balance of sticking to the plan or actually falling for your partner in crime and potentially muck up the whole scheme.

Thanks Nate - I definitely want to try Tales from the Loop some day, and the Star Wars dice mechanic sounds cool. I must admit some of the other stuff sounded a bit gimmicky to me (Jenga towers? Really? I mean, were you offended by a D6 in a previous life? 😁) but that's probably unfair and they'd be fun to play. A couple of unusual games I'd like to try are Quill (solo letter-writing game) and Alienòr (a game about the secret lives/hopes/desires of the ladies-in-waiting to Eleanor of Aquitaine). They're both on Drivethrurpg. The latter would probably be very intense, and you'd need the right group for sure, but even just reading the game book just conjures up the atmosphere so well.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks, Michael! Great suggestions.
I'd say the Jenga tower is actually an effective metaphor for what the games are trying to accomplish. It's not just an alternate way of determining results. Dread actually has a section of the rules called The Metaphor of the Tower, in fact. The feeling of things becoming increasingly precarious before something disastrous happens. I think dice would have a hard time accomplishing that feeling, and the tower is a much more natural fit.

Fiasco is fun, but you do need the right group. Combat wombat DND-style players will have a tough time with it, while theater-kid style DND players will love it. Tales From the Loop was very difficult for a group of players I ran who had only played DND to grasp a more free-form style of RPG. Many of the new rules light systems seem difficult for DND-only players to grasp at first and they may need to be eased into. The concept that they, the players, are as much in control of setting the scene and directing the narrative as a DM would be in a DND is a very tough concept for some players to grasp at first in these rules-light systems.

The ones I have played are either similar to DnD/PF2e or are not good at tactical combat ...

Iron Kingdoms rpg can be pretty tactical since it's an offshoot of the wargame. Have you tried actual miniature wargames?
Imo, we live in a golden era in that realm, so many good games:
5 Leagues from the Borderlands - solo/coop, tactical skirmish missions sandwhiched between generative world building. Buy the book, find any minis/terrain you want and have at it.
Rangers of Shadowdeep - solo/coop, campaign mission based, fairly simple, also minis agnostic.
Frostgrave 2e - the forefather of Rangers of Shadowdeep, more competitive but also some solo mission expansion books.
Nightwatch - ('Hardwired' for a cyberpunk version) - solo/coop. Small band of soldiers fighting enemies.

😊Asmodee transferred the license for the Star Wars RPG from FFG to Edge Stuidios, and I believe the core books and starter boxes are back in print. Also check out Genesys, which is the same core engine of the Star Wars game in a more generic format. Fantasy, cyberpunk, general, modern, weird fiction are all possible in that system.

OH. um...I've kinda spent years hearing about "Monster of the Week" both online and in person, and thinking it was just like. a playstyle. Like how you might have a Westmarch games, or story focused campaigns. I thought it was just like, making each session more focused on this week's monster than an overall story. Which I do from time to time, especially at low levels.

I was expecting more mainstream non-d20, non-high fantasy games. I happen to have burnt out on level/class-based games and fantasy games long before it was cool to hate D&D, though there are some exceptions to those. Some games that are accessible, great fun, and perhaps not so avant garde as those you highlighted are:
Traveller (Science Fiction, been around in one form or another since 1977); Call of Cthulhu and its creepy little brother, Delta Green (if going insane sounds like fun -- hint: it actually is); Conan: Adventures in an Age Undreamed Of (in case you still want fantasy, but without halflings, orcs, and cheap magic), Degenesis: Rebirth (super gritty post-apocalyptic game that's FREE), Kult: Divinity Lost (also derived from PbtA; extra-visceral horror), Stars Without Number (if you like levels and d20s, but prefer science fiction without space dwarves and space goblins), Mutants and Masterminds (sort of d20, but different enough to not ruin it; sock evil in the jaw while wearing spandex!), and Savage Worlds (if you want to build your own setting).
That's just a SMALL sample of games popular enough that you won't have trouble finding people to play (well, most of them anyway).

Love to hear about new games to consider! I have heard of Monster of the Week for some years now but never had the nous to grab it.
Here's a few that I have in my bookshelves but not yet played:
Liminal (mostly narrative, very Supernatural-esque with a touch of Mage)
Household (think The Borrowers RPG, a fairy centric game exploring a house abandoned by its owner)
Blade Runner RPG (need I say more?)
Old Gods of Appalachia (Cypher System game based on folk horror podcast)
Paleomythic (ancient world rpg, aging centric)
Delta Green (Call of Cthulhu but more modern)
Salvage Union (post apocalyptic, mech-driving rpg, Zoids-like)
