- Sergiu Celibidache war von 1979 bis zu seinem Tod, 1996, Chefdirigent der Münchner Philharmoniker. Besonders intensiv setzte er sich mit den Symphonien Anton Bruckners auseinander. Im März 1991 probte er Bruckners Neunte Symphonie in ungewöhnlich langen und intensiven Sitzungen mit den Münchner Philharmonikern.
In bisher nicht veröffentlichten Aufnahmen zeigt dieser Film, wie in einzelnen Phasen dieses scheinbar bekannte Stück neu entdeckt wird. Immer wieder unterbricht Celibidache die Musiker, um seine sehr präzise artikulierten Gedanken zu kommunizieren. Theorie und Praxis kommen zusammen. Zusätzlich zu den Proben zeigt der Film auch Interviews mit Celibidache und begleitet ihn nach St. Florian bei Linz in Ober-Österreich, wo Bruckner begraben wurde. Hier äußert sich Celibidache zur Persönlichkeit von Bruckner.

So true, I was still young playing with some of the orchestra musicians in a semi-professional orchestra. We talked quite a bit about playing Bruckner and them rehearsing with Celi. Always thought I could attend rehearsal some later day. Well, and then the Maestro passed away. An opportunity irretrievably missed. Gave me a reminder of the limited number of days we are on this planet.

I was never into Bruckner until I met this conductor.
I absolutely LOVE this stuff! Watch it over and over...good memories of the greatest Conductor who ever lived! Celibidache was obviously born with a very precise mission. Reveal the utter emotional, spiritual and intelectual depth of Bruckners beautiful music with its huge load of mysticism and "out-of-the-worldness". Never heard anything like this by other composers which, most of the times, convert Bruckners music in a sort of "mush", almost inaudible at times and painfully loud at others. The only one that very recently surprised me very pleasantly was Daniel Barenboim. Bet Celibidache would approve of him if he was still with us,
Listen to Günter Wand's Bruckner cycle, the one with the Cologne Radio Orchestra. Probably one of my favorites. Of course it's a different approach, especially if you're used to Celibidache who generally performs Bruckner at glacial tempos (nothing wrong with that of course).

So true. Nowadays, the calendar of star conductors is so full, they usually don’t invest themselves enough to truly bring Bruckner music to life. Attended Welser-Möst/Vienna Phil… oh boy. Just a gig among many for him. So sad. So shallow. Attended late Haitink in the Vienna Konzerthaus shortly before he passed away - he was good too, in his own way. For me, Celi owns Bruckner.
It is no compromise for the maestro to create music!
He seems like what formidable is all about. Music cannot be more of a sacred thing under his baton.

J’ai eu l’immense chance et privilège de suivre les répétitions à Stuttgart, de participer aux cours à Mainz. Ce que je vois et entends actuellement à Montréal, en France comme à Strasbourg me désole. Beaucoup d’agitateurs de bras, une connaissance relative des œuvres, avoir la musique dans la tête et non la tête dans la musique!

Ohne Übung geht nix, Unterbrechungen müssen sein. Trotzdem schmerzt es ja fast körperlich, wenn dieses überirdisch schöne Adagio an den bewegendsten Stellen (notwendigerweise zwecks Korrektur) abgebrochen wird...... Als ob ich in den Himmel steige, und dann durch eine genervte Stimme brutal auf den Boden der Tatsachen zurückgeholt werde..... *lol* .;-)
Bei Celibidache bleibt das Tiefe, Geheimnisvolle der Musik bewahrt und wird nicht kaputtseziert. Nur so kann der magische Sog dieser vielfach immer noch nicht verstandenen Musik aufscheinen.

Celibidache mag ein herausragender Musiker gewesen sein, aber diese Arroganz ist kaum zu ertragen und das ist der eigentliche Punkt. Wirklich geniale Musiker haben auch immer Bescheidenheit und Demut ausgestrahlt. Diesen Kult um ihn habe ich nie verstanden, seine Interpretationen zum Maß aller Dinge zu erklären, ist einfach Unsinn. Mit seinen "breiten" Tempi hat er einer ganzen Reihe von Kompositionen auch ihren spezifischen Charakter genommen und hat deshalb am Stück vorbei interpretiert. Auch seine Art zu dirigieren, handwerklich meisterlich, aber despotisch, seine Orchester strahlen für mich nie Freiheit, Individualität und Spielfreude aus. Kult war noch nie gut, es geht immer wieder um das unvoreingenommene Zuhörern und auch Zuschauen!

Probably He was very very turned to Bruckner to apreciate the whole work of Mahler. The way He talked about Bruckner, as a composer He could not talk about Mahler.
Conductor Herbert Blomstedt has no troubles with both composers. Although Bruckner expert an expert to Mahler, too.
He did make one Mahler recording with Brigitte Fassbaender, Mahler music is not for everybody though and it was very unpopular within Celebidache's generation, until the 60ties when young people got interested by Adorno's book on Mahler and Bernstein's enthousiasm and recordings
@@quinto34 I really love Mahler. He is my favourite composer. But I don't think that Mahler is not for everyone. I think there are many conductors which have not understood him yet, but they still wish to play his music as he had become a "superstar" in the symphonic world. When Celi died Mahler's work were already very popular to be ignored by Him. Even then I think he refused to follow this way of fame and glamour (status) which is conducting some composers just to impress the critcism and the audience. That's all I believe today about his vision of Mahler.

No, Mahler is saying something completely different.
+Greg Gregory Bruckner's Adagio is about his struggle of faith in the face of failing health and looming death. It is also just a transitional movement and not the end of the symphonic journey. That he did not live to complete the finale should not lead people to think, that he wanted this to be his last word in the symphony.
Mahler's Adagio is about the pain of loss and mourning his daughter and letting go.

quinto34 Not that I’ve heard. No, he didn’t want women in an orchestra. When he was forced to admit them, he didn’t want them to play firsts, and when the orchestra elected a woman as first trombone, he did everything to push her out of the orchestra.
With all his bluster and talk, he was not even included in the list of best conductors where Carlos Kleiber was elected on the first place by a jury of his peers.
Kleiber, who almost never talked to the press wrote an open letter in Der Spiegel to ‘Dear Sergiu’ www.spiegel.de/spiegel/print/d-13493443.html.
