Much like shoes, knowing how big your head is will help you buy the proper size motorcycle helmet. Helmet size is determined by head circumference and it is best to measure in centimeters (CM). Measure just above the eyebrows, across the temples of your head. If you have long hair, measure with you hair down. A fabric measuring tape will be the best thing to use for taking a measurement and be sure to have a friend help you out. If you find you are between two sizes of a helmet, we suggest rounding up to the larger size. Every helmet brand and model will fit differently so it is important to check each manufacturer's sizing chart when buying a helmet.

Excellent! This was helpful, super easy to follow, and straight to the point.
I used a cheapy measuring tape from Harbor Freight. It's steel, but it's narrow, just 1/2 of a centimeter wide. So it is flexible enough to measure my head. My size is 59 centimeters.

What about someone with thick bushy hair and someone bald like me? Even if our head is the same size their measurement will be a little bigger because you’re not pulling the tape measure down tight …. So if I’m once centimeter away from being large while bald should I just get a large?

Head shape is as important as circumference. not all helmets fit the same. How many people buy the wrong size helmet because it is the wrong shape to start with?

It still dumbfounds me that the USA is so adamant to change to the metric system..., I learnt feet and inches nearly my entire schooling, my last year exams were done where we could answer with both systems..., however the metric system is the easiest thing in the world to learn..., its just 1's, 10's, 100's and 1000's. Distance weights, volumes..., all the same and (normally) a LOT more accurate than pounds, feet and inches. I am now 64 and don't even give the old system a second thought..., however a piece of 4 x 2 wood will ALWAYS be a 4 x 2..., and NEVER a 100mm x 50mm. ha ha.

  • @chris.a.1

This is NOT sufficient information for selecting a helmet. That only gets you into the general size range (S, L, etc). It does not tell you how to measure head shape (round, oval, etc), which is just as important. Based on your head shape, you may be a perfect fit for one helmet, and another will be completely inappropriate.

Give both inches and cm measurements. To tell us cm is more accurate than inches is ignorant. Secondly, show us an example of your measurement as to how it correlates to your size chart. (M, L, XL, etc...) Thirdly, many riders wear baclava's or bandanas (especially if snowmobiling) it would be worth mentioning to measure with either or on your head if, this is how you ride.
