- UPDATE (12/2017): We created a sequel that's a musical! See it here:
• NOTGLaDOS: Electromagn...
When a science-mad A.I. system (voiced by GLaDOS actress Ellen McLain) is installed at NASA, two hapless computer technicians learn the process behind nuclear fusion in the Sun, and how it differs from fission.
This video was produced by the education & public outreach department of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, focusing on STEM education. It addresses content included in the Next Generation Science Standards, PS1.C: Nuclear Processes
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., manages the Spitzer Space Telescope mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Science operations are conducted at the Spitzer Science Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Data are archived at the Infrared Science Archive housed at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at Caltech. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.
The day GlaDos rick rolled all of Nasa.
This should go down into history books
That sentence actually exists in this universe!
My faith in humanity has been, somewhat restored! :D
We need a science lesson series voiced by GLaDOS lol!
nasa please make this happen
YES!! It would make science so much easier! I mean, I have the basics of fusion and fission down just from this video xD
keyblader007 ikr
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ALLLLLLLLLLLL THE YES
I have a feeling GLaDOS would've answered with something along the lines of "Inside that box is a really small gerbil running on its exercise wheel. Can we move on now?"
Kosaro Lol yes
I love how at the end it says "Ellen McLain as Nasa's Official Talking General Leisure And Diversion Operational Server," and when you take the first letter of each of those words, it translates to NOTGLADOS
oh my god that's perfect
Did they _actually_ get her tho
why do i love GLaDOS so much her voice is just so amazing
That's NOTGLaDOS
that's not GLaDOS, that's Ellen McLain
I know it's NOT the AI we know and TBH LOVE, but hey, it's pretty close. =)
You are forgotten famous
NASA's official talking general leisure and diversion operational server
=
NOTGLaDOS
...NASAOTGLaDOS?
Nasa's Official talking Genetic Lifeform And Disk Operating System
Thank you Valve and NASA, thank you...
GLaDOS should totally be used as a teaching tool, who is with me?
I could hear a whole e-book of science with GLaDOS voice
As long as there are sarcastic remarks included.
Yes MellowJelly thats what we need. A whole textbook of sarcastic remarks.
If Valve ever commissioned a Portal novel, I need them to get GlaDOS's voice actress to do the audiobook
Same
I love this video, especially the anti-mass spectrometer reference and the rickrolls.
That ending was beautiful.
"That Anti-Mass Spectrometer isn't going to install itself."
Is that just science, or was that an intentional Half-Life reference? Imagine GLaDOS hooked up to Black Mesa's network.
Image GLaDOS talking instead of that deep announcement voice. That would be a great mod.
You are a genius.
It is a Half-Life reference. Mass spectrometers exist in real life, anti-mass spectrometers do not.
GLaDOS would be an awesome teacher.
If all educational videos were like this, I would watch them all.
Over 2 decades of professional and self education, and it took GLaDOS to teach me how the sun works.
That is a bloody brilliant idea, from the beginning to the end! Well done NASA!
And Valve !
:)
BaldrITA Oh yes! Most certainly!
VideoGiochItalia The words "Bloody brilliant" make you sound like Wheatley. No one needs a real life Wheatley. 😂
Nagito Komaedon't Correction: EVERYONE needs a real life Wheatley.
GLaDOS should really narrate lots of new educational shorts. Her voice is humorously unsettling in the most wonderful of ways and it's impossible NOT to pay attention to what she says because of it.
С
When my friend told me that GlaDOS is the voice for one of NASA's videos, I didn't believe it. Now it's here. Amazing :D
Rick rolling the media files. Well played GLADos, well played.
GLaDOS*
So not only do NASA's techs not know the difference between fission and fusion, but they're building an AI out of an iMac, an old PC tower, and a Polaroid camera. NASA has really hit the skids lately.
Well, at least they are looking for a way to make an AI cheaply. This should be buildable by the everyday evil scientist
Despite her viciousness in the games, GLaDOS actually makes a pretty good teacher. 68% intellect, 32% spite. There should be more of this. I imagined GLaDOS would change all of them to either Still Alive or Justin Beiber songs XD I'm GLaD she was able to instill her standard sarcasm to an educational video, mainly referring to the male repairman.
Did you know you can donate one or all of your vital organs to the Aperture Science Self-Esteem Fund for Girls? It's true!
This makes me incredibly happy, I'm glad they got to use the real voice mod for Ellen :)
you mean GLaD
Nasa design team:
We need a new design for our super advanced ai system
How about we dip a polaroid camera in white paint?
Mutual murmors of approval and handshakes insue
Guess a Polaroid camera is a step up from a potato for GlaDOS. :)
I normally would be bored by these science lectures, but GLaDOS makes it sound so interesting and enjoyable. ❤️❤️❤️
Nice work, Casey McKinnon !
LOL omg thats so funny.
Thanks, Kiki! :)
PS: The reason I wanted to do this project was because I want more ladies like you in the world. I made the "mistake" of not studying science and in my final year of college, I took a class in astrophysics and wished I could go back in time and study science from a younger age (I needed to catch up on a heck of a lot more math skills). I'm happy I'm an actor, and wouldn't change a thing in my life, but there are other young ladies out there who I'd love to help guide into the awesomeness of science. :)
^^ Absolutely brilliant reason to do this project Casey McKinnon. As a science student I applaud your efforts to inspire people to follow their aspirations.
Thanks, Brian Balsama! It was SOOOO much easier than building a time travel machine and going back and changing my discipline. ;)
This video is AWESOME! I've never had so much fun learning how nuclear fusion and nuclear fission works.
Honestly I would expand this into a series called "GLaDOS explains the universe!"
I could be a scientist if GLaDOS explains everything for me :(
Hopefully the amount of views on this video will encourage them to bring GLADOS back.
I hope this video will hit a few million views. It really deserves it! :D
+azulral and appoint her world leader
I don't think people are ready to welcome the robot overlords just yet. Not that she would give them much choice.
my thoughts exactly on the matter of choice :D
This is really, really good! I laughed and learned and laughed some more. Can GLaDOS get her own science show on PBS? Someone needs to replace Mr. Wizard!
Also, I had NO IDEA that light was trapped in the Sun for thousands and thousands of years before being released. The more you know!
So many good lines in here... AND... check out the acronym created in the credits for Ellen McClain. Clever folks.
Even GLaDOS wants to work at NASA! We should teach all of our science this way.
An evil rick rolling spray painted polaroid camera AI talking to Mr.mc2 hammering wires together is the best way I've ever seen fusion explained. They could have their own edu channel.
Ellen McLain as "NASA's Official Talking General Leisure and Diversion Operation Server"
i.e. NOTGLaDOS
I have never enjoyed a science video in my entire life so much. I'm suprised that they actually got Ellen to do this.
...until now?
Seriously, right?! We are LUCKY. :)
You could have this be a whole series; GLaDOS explains science. I would pay to watch that
All science videos from now on must be exactly like this.
This was awesome
No kidding, but if they made another Bill Nye style show with Glados as the host I would watch every episode. You're sitting on a gold mine here.
Woah...I want a series. If VALVe can branch the franchise to also be an educational tool that ties into NASA I will friggin flip.
This is like my favorite thing.
I want this to be a thing so bad ahahahaha.
This was hilarious! "Welp, we'd better get over to Theoretical Physics." "Yeah. That Anti-Mass Spectrometer isn't gonna install itself!" Nice Half-Life reference!
Nuclear fusion is now more valuable than the organs and combined incomes of everyone in (subject hometown here).
SuckTitles you, (subject name here) must be the pride of (subject hometown here)
"I can not imagine being that dense"
...
This needs to be a series, I had so much fun learning
NASA'S Official Talking General Leisure and Diversion Operational Sever. (NOTGLaDOS). Well played.
Can this please just be a thing now? Like, from now on, just keep making more and more videos like this. I just wanna keep hearing GLaDOS talk about things.
Oh my-
I LOVE this murderous, human-hating, sarcastic A.I. so much!
Honestly, thank you Valve for the Portal games...
This *might* be one of the best things ever.
This was made on 2014 and I only just discovered it? Wow. It would be amazing if Ellen McLain voiced more videos like this.
Even GLaDOS understands the power of Rick Rolling
A very clever idea! People will listen to pretty much anything explained by GLados, i know I will!
I swear to this day, if I ever become a science teacher and must teach my students about nuclear fission or fusion I'm using this video. That ending just cracked me up.
oH MY GOD NASA, HOW DID I NOT KNOW YOU GUYS DID THIS. Now more than ever, I am determined to one day become an astrophysicist so I can work for you guys. So congratulations, your video is working.
This may be the single greatest video I have ever watched.
All science classes should play "GLaDOS Teaches" and Bill Nye. I'm sure more kids would want to learn science. I know I would thoroughly enjoy it.
Great video, no better way to learn than with Glados voice.
Ellen Mclain as "Nasa's Official Talking General Leisure and Diversion Operational Server".....
NOTGLaDOS....clever...very clever :3
I would have perfect grades if GLaDOS was my professor
Agreed
I would just trap her in a potato.
***** I came here from steam when I saw this video in the news section for Portal 2
Chris Frank
same
I would be dead from neurotoxin.
I love this.
I also love that GLADoS is made up of an old computer and polaroid camera.
We need a whole series of GLaDOS teaching science
This needs to be in every physics lesson in every school, that would be awesome!
Loved the clip... it made me laugh... my hubby thought i was nuts...lol...then i had to show him clip...
I could listen to GLaDOS talk about science all day. I'd absorb it like a sponge.
lol, if you see in the credits, they call her "nasas official talking general leisure and diversion operational server", so shes NOTGLaDOS x3
I love the old Polaroid camera!
Best use of public funds. EVER! Go NASA! More!!!!
This is amazing! I hope they make more videos like this one :)
That was THE. BEST. THING. EVER! XD Words cannot describe how AWESOME this video is! XD Please, please, please, PLEASE! Do more of these!
I would love this to become a series of episode where glades explains everything... but I can only dream
While everyone is all GLaDOS GLaDOS GLaDOS... I am over here like "AMY MAIZNER!!"
GLaDOS, GLaDOS! :D
I wonder why I didn't hear about the voice of GLaDOS being in an educational NASA sooner, because this was really awesome. The AI's lines were pretty accurate in terms of portraying GLaDOS's character, and those orange jumpsuit people kind of look like a certain protagonist in Portal as a reference. The video as a whole was great though, and the approval by Valve seals the deal.
so, GLaDOS is now a camera on a Mac?
I think so
Wow I love GlaDOS and I just learned more about science from this video than I have in a month at school
Well that anti mass spectrometer isn't gonna install itself.
A PORTAL AND HALF LIFE REFERENCE IN THE SAME VIDEO
Awesome! Ellen McLain rocks as GLaDOS!
DAT ENDING! Hilarious! Love GLaDOS. Also, actually did learn something too. Didn't know the light we see was that old.
I would learn so much more in school if lessons were taught by GLaDOS.
What's most impressive is, as we can see from 7:45, they actually managed to find a PC with an AT form factor and card-based serial/parallel ports. Oh, and the sound card's jacks aren't color coded, and it still has the 15 pin analog joystick/midi port. Basically, the computer I had in 1996.
I could watch all my science classes like this.
I wish there was a whole series of these videos. :(
I'd LOVE NASA to make an entire season of science lessons taught by GLaDOS.
This is one of the best things I've ever seen!
I would learn so much if Glados was our science teacher at school
"Hey, sciency person! Tell her about that E = McTwo thing."
I can pay a lot more attention to GLaDOS teaching me about science than my biology teacher.
Where's the deadly neuro-toxin.
A Polaroid, huh? That's still got to be better than a potato.
"...you could say they're going out for some stale sunlight." Casey McKinnon: "Whoa."
2:13 got me really badly 😂😂 especially GlaDOS’s silence
I came here to look at the cool acting and GLaDOS voice but instead get GLaDOS talking about fusing atoms?
I like this too.
We must have more!
This is the best concept ever and it's executed so well. This makes me so happy!!
This is amazing! Here's hoping for more GLaDOS working for NASA. For science, of course.
Please make this a series!
one of the coolest things I have seen
This is so good, more please!
Awesome, more of this please!
Please make more of these
I would love to see more with GLaDOS!
Nasa rickrolled =D
God this was EPIC!!!!
Amazing!
