    I still don’t know what’s causing my lower back pain since I haven’t visited any doctor who specializes in physical therapy, but I already have it since I was in highschool. Based on the kind of lower back pain I’m experiencing and after doing some research, I think I have a lumbar facet joint problem down my spine. And just today, I’m having the pain again and I’m having a hard time standing up straight, so I looked for exercises that can help lessen the pain and found this vid. I did the thumb technique and it worked for awhile. I guess I really have to visit a physical therapist here in the Philippines, asap. :(

    I have grade 1 spondylolisthesis. I'm having pain after I walk or stand up a while - 5 minutes or longer. The pain is in my lower back, mostly right side. When I go to sit down or lay down I get the sharp pains, especially if I turn over in the bed after walking or standing. Is this pain from the facet joints or si joints? I did have real bad sciatica pain in my right leg and was just about bedridden from it. Now, than pain has decreased and have this new pain. Any advice would be appreciated! You guys are quite entertaining! I’ve done years of PT without anyone saying anything beyond “mild arthritis”. So helpful 🙄
    Yesterday I had MRI results that showed disc desiccation in lumbar, thoracic, AND cervical spine; loss of lordotic curvature in lumbar and cervical; bulging annulus in lumbar, thoracic, and cervical; narrowing of both left and right neural foramen in all three; facet hypertrophy in cervical and lumbar; mild stenosis in lumbar and thoracic; levoscoliosis in the cervical; and a hemangioma. Even with ALL of these things put together, my pain management doctor doesn’t seem to think there’s much to worry about, despite my constant and ever-worsening pain. He’s going to do facet joint injections in L5-S1 and C5-6, but that is all he recommends.
    Do you think I should get a second opinion? It seems like a LOT for him to say “no biggie”...

    Hi Bob and Brad, I love your videos, thank you for your help. I had a CT done of my lower back area and found that I had slight protrusion of the L4-L5 and L5-S1 discs. But the doctor also diagnosed me with facet syndrome (which, by the exercises I've done and the explanation of symptoms, seem to be the correct diagnosis for the slight pain above my waist). It seems like what's good for facet syndrome is bad for disc protrusion. How do I reconcile with these two different needs? Are they at odds?

    • @dusan5012
      @dusan5012 2 года назад +1

      I have just been diagnosed with L5-S1 protrusion and the physio discovered the facet joint irritation actually. As per many lectures you would know that assessment is needed to discover what causes the pain. If your pain is cause when you lean backwards only you don't have to worry about the disc. Especially where there is no leg pain. What works for bulging disc does not work for facet joint irritation. Get a proper assessment and start with the therapy. It is important for "us" to avoid prolonged walking and standing. You will work on mobility first which is the first exercise these guys did and slowly get stronger. The key with this issue is more to mobility.

    Jeez I do that fist technique all the time. It works good while standing. Even better if you're laying down flat arms at your side and you prop yourself up with your elbows, make a fist and put both of your fists alongside the lower spine, then relax your back and with your fists bicep do small like 1 inch thrusts starting at the base of the spine, push the spine towards your stomache or head. Helps if you kinda slowly lay down as you drive the fist in. You got to be good at relaxing your spine

    I find that these stretches feel GREAT while I do them, but I'm in AGONY within an hour of doing them and needing complete rest for at least a day. I am 53 year old female; injured my L4-L5 in January 2012 (lifting and twisting mistake); status post L4 Kami, the a repair 6 weeks later, alif/plif L4-S1, and 6 months later removal of left side hardware. I have Medtronic cages (2) with bone morphagenic protein; most recent lumbar MRI (July 2017) shows hypertrophic bone encroaching into spinal canal. I feel like Alice in wonderland going down the rabbit hole when trying to get treatment (California worker's compensation system is criminal, in my opinion). Can you tell me WHY it hurts me so much to do these stretches?

    When I flex my back during the cat camels it feels like my spine is about to snap, but extension is okay, what's up with that?

    Can the cartilage rejuvenate itself back to normal after this therapy or is this pain something that will continue for the duration of life.

    I have bad knees from a car wreck and I have rods in both knees as a result so I can't do child's pose or cat camel... What can I do aside from those two?

    • @sweariefaerie9621
      @sweariefaerie9621 Год назад

      Cat-cow can be done while seated upright. Basically, you just do the back and hip motions with your feet as flat as possible, and your hands on your knees. Same with child's pose. Just remember, you're bending at the waist, and trying to keep your spine straight. That might take some practice to get a deep stretch, but you can help it along by bringing your knee toward your chest one at a time until your hip flexors get loose enough for you to accomplish an upright child's pose.
      There are a lot of pose adaptations that are meant for people with joint complications. If you search for recovery yoga, you should find a wealth of information to choose from.
      I hope this helps, and that your pain management regimen is as helpful as you need.❤

    Maybe infamous! Yoga poses: cat/cow not cat/camel. Cat is back arching up, cow is belly drawing down, chest lifting - like a cow mooing. And it's not downward dog, it's child's pose you're doing. But some great tips just the same!

      You are absolutely right if you are talking about yoga. Physical therapy uses different terminology that has nothing to do with yoga, even though they are the same movement.

    I have been trying to find out what is causing the pain in my back for a while now. Yesterday a doctor diagnosed me with Facet joint syndrome. But after researching and watching your video, I am doubtful because the pain is intense when I am sitting and when I am bending forward ! Can this still be Facet joint syndrome in this case ?

      First of all, I want to thank you so much for replying to my messages, I really appreciate it.
      The thing is I have a herniated disc in L5 S1, but the pain is not going down to my thighs and legs, the pain is mainly located a bit to the right of my spine, where the right tailbone is, and recently just sitting down is causing excruciating pain and sometimes causes a click where the pain level is paralyzing. So I saw a doctor yesterday and he told me that he thinks its facet joint syndrome ! but according to my symptoms I am really confused now !

      I am an Exercise Physiology student. Loving Bob and Brad's videos. When I read your comment, i went back to my revision notes doc...this might be helpful: www.spine-health.com/conditions/arthritis/symptoms-and-diagnosis-facet-joint-problems "Interestingly, when the acute lumbar or cervical facet joint inflammation is at its peak, the symptoms may closely imitate those of a herniated disc, a deep infection, a fracture, or a torn muscle of the spine, or in the low back, sometimes an acute intra-abdominal problem. Clearly, such episodes can be very disabling and frightening." which makes me think that maybe you can have a facet joint problem when you lean forward too.
      I wasn't sure *Bob and Brad*, from the video on the treatment for facet joint problem, what you were saying about pain that you might get when leaning forward, so do the forward leaning belt treatment...The link that I just posted here provides some info on that maybe...wouldn't you say it would be very rare to get pain in leaning forward with facet joint problems..and if it does occur, then that would just be due to muscles hugely spasming up round the area causing pain unpredictable directions?
      If its a disc problem, it should produce pain with the straight leg raise test (pain in some or all of the upper or lower leg or buttock or back, that is not a muscle stretching pain, that is a positive/indicative of disc issue test result - do the dorsiflexion or head raise along with that test to keep out the muscle stretch pain factor be a potential confounder). I would think that if it's not a disc problem (which should be relived by extension exercises as *Bob and Brad* have recommended) then it would be the facet joint problem. Also though, it is always possible to have both a disc and facet joint problem at the same time in which case you'd just need to take things very carefully so as to try not to aggravate either condition but yet keep moving so that you minimize painful joints or areas of pinched nerves making muscles surrounding the area to spasm up and make the area feel more painful, and consequently also limit your body's ability to move onto other exercises to ultimately hopefully fix the bulge and/or facet joint problem (depending on whether it is just an inflammed/irritated facet joint or an arthritic facet joint - am interested to know the results of *Bob and Brad's* reference to the rabbit study on the arthritis which got better from keeping the joints moving unweighted, compared to the rabbits which had their joints locked in position whose arthritis got worse - that wouldn't be referring to the boney growths going would they?).
      Hope you have found or find the solutions you're looking for soon Amer...and wishing you all the best!
      Bob and Brad, I have bolded your names in the above message to hopefully draw your attention to a few questions I have :). Thank you!

      Thanks for the time put into writing that reply, I really appreciate it.
      The extreme, brain numbing pain I get when I try to lean forward, to do something as simple as tying my shoe laces, is depressing me, and I some times just cant do it and ask for help... I am 29 years old and have always been a hardcore athlete, going to gym every day, and playing football basketball and tennis through out the whole week. Suddenly I cant even tie my own shoe laces !!! Its a drastic change in life style and its getting to me... I have been diagnosed with a degenerated and herniated l5-s1 disc, but the pain im having is not going down my legs. It is concentrated on the bottom right of my spine and spreads alittle down to my buttock. It is mainly aggravated when I sit down or lean forward. I have been newly diagnosed with Facet joint syndrome, but everywhere I read that with a facet joint syndrome, you can feel better by sitting down and leaning forward but this is exactly what causes my pain ! Im very confused !
