Thank you both for doing what you do to help others. Blessings.
Thanks so much Brad and Bob for the great details on this condition. I am trying to get as much info for My Mom and for me.
Hi I’m from NZ, you are right! I had to look it up when you said facets only to learn that it’s just your accents! Great to know the belt technique came from this part of the world. It worked a treat! Thanks for your wonderfully informative RUclips clips👍
I have been trying to figure out what’s been going on. This explains it to a tee and your recommended exercises bring relief! Thank you!!
Thank you guys the thumb and belt exercises help me a lot

Can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate all you do for everyone!!!! God bless you greatly!!!!! Beverly
My low back pain is severe when ever i have to bend over, even to shave. Do you guys think it is more likely a disc issue than the facet joints in this case? Thank You
@@kloozman get an mri and don't bend forward
Thank you for all of your help and instructions. You have helped me and my family tremendously. Question: Do you have other exercises besides the belt ones, I can't stay on my knees too long since they have been replaced. Thank you both!
great info.
Awesome sir, thank u
That's a great idea with the belt. You guys really ARE the best!
You guys are dead on wit this!. Feel much better.
love the little cues that make a difference
I'm 38 and I have had this for years. Finally I changed pain doctors, and he happened to be a rhuematologist too. I finally got diagnosed. I caused a bulging disc in 2008. Now we know the ablation works. I also use my hand for the belt technique. I'm going to try the belt though .
I also have fibromyalgia. For 19 years now
Danielle Gager damn that’s a rough set of issues Danielle.
Stay strong baby
My x-ray shows osteophytes and a facet joint hypertrophy and I was worrying about that tender spot in my back. I didn’t use the belt but instead, my knuckle. Thank you so much!!!❤🎉
Thanks most famous Physical therapists on the internet
I’m 23 and the pain has been annoying but, am not letting it stop me from living my life :)! You guys are not alone.
Are you diagnosed with facet joint arthropathy?

Please add more exercises for chronic facet joint pain
Thank you for sharing these exercises! I'm trying them. I was diagnosed with FJS and was wondering what works best for the buttock spasms? I now sleep with a pillow in between my knees and sleep on my side. I'm still waking up with a lot of stiffness throughout my neck and back. Anything you can recommend for stiffness?
Thanks for this, really helps for my degenerate joint disease. 👍🏼
I'm 23 dealing with joint issues and I'm so grateful to y'all for making this!! Thank you!
Lol me too fam
What do you mean joint issues what do you have exactly?
Holy crap it works for me. Ty!
Thx Guys, these exercises are good tips to control my mid back facet joints. Have realized these are even effective than Painkillers that I have been taking over the last 18 months. Keep up guys.
Will we need surgery for this or never if we do PT chiro?
Hi, should I be avoiding all twisting exercises (in yoga and otherwise) for a left sided L5 facet joint pain?
Thank you both I am going to try the exercises... I hurt my back many years ago and damaged a facet joint which showed up in a mri scan.. Not good really.. Rosemary... Belfast
after years, as a broke young man, I now know where its coming from. the exercise of pushing up with my hands and going forward takes away the pain of bending forward, I will rehab my fact. thank yay so much
Nice.
It worked… wow
thank you gentlemen
Nice
hi do you guys know much about bertalotti syndrome can't seem to find much about it anywhere and recently discovered this is why I have lower back pain at 26
Sir I have facet joint problem with l5s1 l4l5 herniated disc problem so which exercise is better for me
I still don’t know what’s causing my lower back pain since I haven’t visited any doctor who specializes in physical therapy, but I already have it since I was in highschool. Based on the kind of lower back pain I’m experiencing and after doing some research, I think I have a lumbar facet joint problem down my spine. And just today, I’m having the pain again and I’m having a hard time standing up straight, so I looked for exercises that can help lessen the pain and found this vid. I did the thumb technique and it worked for awhile. I guess I really have to visit a physical therapist here in the Philippines, asap. :(
It’s amazing how your body knows what you need: I do the belt move when I’m walking the dog off lead as I use the lead rather than the belt. I didn’t know why it helped - I do now.
I just tried the leg rocking with knees and feet together and it caused a shock like pain from my left lower back into my hip amd front of my thigh when rocking to the right. I know I suffer from facet arthritis among other issues. Just wondering if that is my facet joint being irritated or something else. I'll be trying these other techniques when I'm able. I enjoy and appreciate your videos.
Can't thank you enough :)
Outstanding bob and Brad .ha ha funny guys
I am an avid golf and have been dealing with lower right side back pain for almost a year and a half. I have been to PT where they could not diagnose it. It is worse when standing and leaning to the right, radiating to the top of the buttock. I do a lot of driving for my occupation and will feel dull pain or stiffness throughout the day. Your thoughts or suggestions?!? Thank you.
I feel like I need to pay you $275 lol
hahahaahahahaha
What about a video that's show how to tell the difference between sciatica pain from piriformis and pinched nerve from a herniated disk in the lower back?
Its almost the same symptoms but very different to treatment.
I have grade 1 spondylolisthesis. I'm having pain after I walk or stand up a while - 5 minutes or longer. The pain is in my lower back, mostly right side. When I go to sit down or lay down I get the sharp pains, especially if I turn over in the bed after walking or standing. Is this pain from the facet joints or si joints? I did have real bad sciatica pain in my right leg and was just about bedridden from it. Now, than pain has decreased and have this new pain. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks and love your videos
Where can I purchase the resistance band used for Facet Joint Pain in the above video? Please post link!
thank you so much for this video.. I am waiting for that exercise coz I have all the same symptoms you told in previous video on facet syndrome.
Q.What is difference between Lambard lodoses and facet syndrome ?
Q. What's the best sleeping position for facet syndrome problem.
physicaltherapyvideo thank you so much for your quick response... your teaching is very helpful sir. and it's very wonderful to see you both respecting each other. my pray is with you guys
What if when we use the fist in the low back to do as you mentioned and it causes the pain going down the leg to worsen and even make it feel like someone is literally squeezing the foot?
Yesterday I had an x-ray that shows facet joint syndrome. I have -3.7 L1-4 osteoporosis and thought I may have had a fracture till my scan showed this. Ouch man I ache. Working at Walmart does not help my back. Thank you for this video. I also do many of these with Kundalini yoga
So I went to chiropractor and she diagnosed me as possibly having facet joint syndrome but mine doesn’t really hurt when I go forward or backward. Mostly side to side or twisting motions. Can these exercises still be used for that?
You guys are awesome, love the pagers!!! Ive got this wretched condition, had it six months. Its depressing and overcoming the mental impact is the hardest challenge. Living with chronic pain is hard and impacts your whole life. I cant stand the hot burning sensation is causes me, its so distracting.
I’m with you. My quality of life has been severely impacted by this condition. I wish you the best.
Same. I find stretching and ibuprofen helps. Stay strong man.
I am 64 years old, and I have been doing these exercises and more for several months, but there has been no improvement in my lumbar facet joints' condition (osteoarthritis). I will probably try an injection in the near future.
So what about using a yoga swing. .will it help with lower back pain and hips
Helpful but wondering what is acceptable to do after low lumbar fusion surgeries. In recovery phase. 4 months out. This seems to have forced a facet issue above fusion levels. How do you get to thoracic facet levels.
I wish I could come see you guys! My doctor does not seem to care that I'm hurting 24/7! I have several issues, but my doctor is like "yeah, you need this or that". I get the "this or that" and still no actual diagnosis. I'm in so much pain. 3 months of chiropractor, 8 visits of physical therapy, several massages, at home exercises, icing my back, taking neurontin twice daily and flexeril 3 times daily. No relief at all!!!!!! My doctor doesn't care, please help me!!!
I did the fist technique and got a good crack in my back.
I have L4-L5 facet pain and it's ruining my life. Are these long term treatment solutions? What about planks etc?
my mother in 55year old how to relief her pain plzz tell about it
could you please write what are you saying at your videos
some times i couldn't understand some of your language because i am not talking English fluently . thanks in advance
You guys are quite entertaining! I’ve done years of PT without anyone saying anything beyond “mild arthritis”. So helpful 🙄
Yesterday I had MRI results that showed disc desiccation in lumbar, thoracic, AND cervical spine; loss of lordotic curvature in lumbar and cervical; bulging annulus in lumbar, thoracic, and cervical; narrowing of both left and right neural foramen in all three; facet hypertrophy in cervical and lumbar; mild stenosis in lumbar and thoracic; levoscoliosis in the cervical; and a hemangioma. Even with ALL of these things put together, my pain management doctor doesn’t seem to think there’s much to worry about, despite my constant and ever-worsening pain. He’s going to do facet joint injections in L5-S1 and C5-6, but that is all he recommends.
Do you think I should get a second opinion? It seems like a LOT for him to say “no biggie”...
How are you now
Did you try Physical Therapy?? I'll bet someone like Bob and Brad would've helped you out quite a bit!
These guys are comedy gold.
I few years ago I could not close my hand into a fist . It was that way for a year my pointer finger I could not bend at all. They had one simple hand exercise that I did a few times a day after two weeks I was back to normal these guys are great .
Thank you!
Hi Bob and Brad, I love your videos, thank you for your help. I had a CT done of my lower back area and found that I had slight protrusion of the L4-L5 and L5-S1 discs. But the doctor also diagnosed me with facet syndrome (which, by the exercises I've done and the explanation of symptoms, seem to be the correct diagnosis for the slight pain above my waist). It seems like what's good for facet syndrome is bad for disc protrusion. How do I reconcile with these two different needs? Are they at odds?
Did you figure out? I am in the process
I have just been diagnosed with L5-S1 protrusion and the physio discovered the facet joint irritation actually. As per many lectures you would know that assessment is needed to discover what causes the pain. If your pain is cause when you lean backwards only you don't have to worry about the disc. Especially where there is no leg pain. What works for bulging disc does not work for facet joint irritation. Get a proper assessment and start with the therapy. It is important for "us" to avoid prolonged walking and standing. You will work on mobility first which is the first exercise these guys did and slowly get stronger. The key with this issue is more to mobility.
Derek. Have you found any relief? I also have disc bulges and facet syndrome and am trying to navigate conflicting treatment protocols. In the meantime, I'm just working on flexibility and tons of core work.
Any exercise for thoraxic facet pain?? I feel pain every night after 3-4am.. when rotate body i feel pain on the sides of the spine. Facet For sure!! Onced i had a medial branch block but it helped for 4-6 months and came bach the pain.
Couple of Advils work wonders, but i wont take them daily, cause they do damage to liver.
Would stem cells in the facet joints L5-S1 fix this problem? RF ablations are temporary and only put a bandaid on a wound. Exercises help some but I am still in chronic pain 247. Thank you for the videos. They are helpful.
How are you know?
You guys are definitely characters. LOL. Thanks for the info!!
Lion exercise for facet joint mobility & lumbar self snags for segmental mobility
I have bad facet joint low back pain and do all this and then some I am still in pain. I had shots once but no more. I am hopelessly in pain and in great shape. This is all caused by too many lifts and bad lifts as a caregiver. I need real help what can I do?
Are these also safe to do for those post MD
Cat / cow not camel. But I love your vidioes and pass them on a lot!
Jeez I do that fist technique all the time. It works good while standing. Even better if you're laying down flat arms at your side and you prop yourself up with your elbows, make a fist and put both of your fists alongside the lower spine, then relax your back and with your fists bicep do small like 1 inch thrusts starting at the base of the spine, push the spine towards your stomache or head. Helps if you kinda slowly lay down as you drive the fist in. You got to be good at relaxing your spine
What about cystic lesion to the facet joint?
I had RFA on my L3-5 that failed. A year later I'm still suffering and can't do much around the house.
Hay would a invertion just do it all?
I'm only 29 and I get very very tight and pain in the morning that sloooowwly gets better as I stretch thru the day. If I'm only 29 did my chiropractor do this too me?
Hi! I had my MRI few days ago for my lumbar spine and right knee. The impression on the results says I have a "minimal L3-4 and L4-5 facet joint effusions" and"minimal right knee joint effusions". What does that means? Do I have a facet joint syndrome already? I'm hoping you can help me on this. :)
I too just had my MRI and was diagnosed with facet disease. I'm wondering how you are doing and how and what you had to do to relieve the knee pain
Any advice on facet joint pain in cervical spine I got the facet joint injection n I feel worse constant headaches
physicaltherapyvideo thanks 😩😕
I find that these stretches feel GREAT while I do them, but I'm in AGONY within an hour of doing them and needing complete rest for at least a day. I am 53 year old female; injured my L4-L5 in January 2012 (lifting and twisting mistake); status post L4 Kami, the a repair 6 weeks later, alif/plif L4-S1, and 6 months later removal of left side hardware. I have Medtronic cages (2) with bone morphagenic protein; most recent lumbar MRI (July 2017) shows hypertrophic bone encroaching into spinal canal. I feel like Alice in wonderland going down the rabbit hole when trying to get treatment (California worker's compensation system is criminal, in my opinion). Can you tell me WHY it hurts me so much to do these stretches?
They said a few times avoid what hurts and find what works and be careful.
My backs all sorts of messed up, disk bulge, stenosis, and facet joint injury.. I’ll be honest I’m not sure what to do since it’s been 1.5 years since my deadlifting accident
Its Faaacet joint here in UK too
I cant bend forward at all . could that be my facet joint?
how to relief pain
Can this actually heal? What I mean is the face joints like they used to be before the issue?
Shoaib Khan this is what I really want to know
I wish but not likely. Unless you find a fountain of youth.
Can someone tell me if an inversion table will help get rid of facet joint syndrome. I don't want to invest in one if it won't help. Thanks
If I drank 2 beers and the pain went away should I drink 2 more? I'm going to go outside now so il take my answer off the air or in it?
hahahaha Amazing!
Am I too old I’m 28 lol 😂 I swear I’m having this problem these moves feel so good. Can having kids cause this? I’ve had 3 in the last 4 years and I feel so much pain in that area.
How do you feel now?
If you are a hip patient can you still do that last one? If not , what's an alternative?
physicaltherapyvideo Thank you.
I fell on stairs yesterday then I lefted my 2 year old then My back hurts☹️. I started searching on the internet and found you two (thank you so much) I saw your videos on herniated disk, thank God it is not it. I think it is this thing, I feel like a robot can't bend forward or backwards. I am 26 though. Oh man, I guess I need to see a doctor . One time my knee hert and I didn't saw a doctor, I guess I should see about it as well.
Thanks alot you two

i should add. i have been facing these pains since 1 year. No medication has helped.
P.S. I am a young doctor. graduated this year.
How are you now? I have same problem? Have u recovered
@Harsh Parekh hello harsh. Turns out i have psoriatic arthritis. Its still going on. On constant pain killers for the last 6 years.
I’m confused. Which one am I supposed to do if it hurts when I lean back?
how is your back now?

When I flex my back during the cat camels it feels like my spine is about to snap, but extension is okay, what's up with that?
Can the cartilage rejuvenate itself back to normal after this therapy or is this pain something that will continue for the duration of life.
Life
I have bad knees from a car wreck and I have rods in both knees as a result so I can't do child's pose or cat camel... What can I do aside from those two?
Cat-cow can be done while seated upright. Basically, you just do the back and hip motions with your feet as flat as possible, and your hands on your knees. Same with child's pose. Just remember, you're bending at the waist, and trying to keep your spine straight. That might take some practice to get a deep stretch, but you can help it along by bringing your knee toward your chest one at a time until your hip flexors get loose enough for you to accomplish an upright child's pose.
There are a lot of pose adaptations that are meant for people with joint complications. If you search for recovery yoga, you should find a wealth of information to choose from.
I hope this helps, and that your pain management regimen is as helpful as you need.❤
Maybe infamous! Yoga poses: cat/cow not cat/camel. Cat is back arching up, cow is belly drawing down, chest lifting - like a cow mooing. And it's not downward dog, it's child's pose you're doing. But some great tips just the same!
She's wrong, it's exactly what you said.
Susan is right.
Fish On needs to fish off and google yoga.
You are absolutely right if you are talking about yoga. Physical therapy uses different terminology that has nothing to do with yoga, even though they are the same movement.
You, two, are like an old married couple - finishing each other's sentences. It makes me miss my deceased husband. LOL
I have been trying to find out what is causing the pain in my back for a while now. Yesterday a doctor diagnosed me with Facet joint syndrome. But after researching and watching your video, I am doubtful because the pain is intense when I am sitting and when I am bending forward ! Can this still be Facet joint syndrome in this case ?
First of all, I want to thank you so much for replying to my messages, I really appreciate it.
The thing is I have a herniated disc in L5 S1, but the pain is not going down to my thighs and legs, the pain is mainly located a bit to the right of my spine, where the right tailbone is, and recently just sitting down is causing excruciating pain and sometimes causes a click where the pain level is paralyzing. So I saw a doctor yesterday and he told me that he thinks its facet joint syndrome ! but according to my symptoms I am really confused now !
Thank you so much for your time. I really appreciate it.
I am an Exercise Physiology student. Loving Bob and Brad's videos. When I read your comment, i went back to my revision notes doc...this might be helpful: www.spine-health.com/conditions/arthritis/symptoms-and-diagnosis-facet-joint-problems "Interestingly, when the acute lumbar or cervical facet joint inflammation is at its peak, the symptoms may closely imitate those of a herniated disc, a deep infection, a fracture, or a torn muscle of the spine, or in the low back, sometimes an acute intra-abdominal problem. Clearly, such episodes can be very disabling and frightening." which makes me think that maybe you can have a facet joint problem when you lean forward too.
I wasn't sure *Bob and Brad*, from the video on the treatment for facet joint problem, what you were saying about pain that you might get when leaning forward, so do the forward leaning belt treatment...The link that I just posted here provides some info on that maybe...wouldn't you say it would be very rare to get pain in leaning forward with facet joint problems..and if it does occur, then that would just be due to muscles hugely spasming up round the area causing pain unpredictable directions?
If its a disc problem, it should produce pain with the straight leg raise test (pain in some or all of the upper or lower leg or buttock or back, that is not a muscle stretching pain, that is a positive/indicative of disc issue test result - do the dorsiflexion or head raise along with that test to keep out the muscle stretch pain factor be a potential confounder). I would think that if it's not a disc problem (which should be relived by extension exercises as *Bob and Brad* have recommended) then it would be the facet joint problem. Also though, it is always possible to have both a disc and facet joint problem at the same time in which case you'd just need to take things very carefully so as to try not to aggravate either condition but yet keep moving so that you minimize painful joints or areas of pinched nerves making muscles surrounding the area to spasm up and make the area feel more painful, and consequently also limit your body's ability to move onto other exercises to ultimately hopefully fix the bulge and/or facet joint problem (depending on whether it is just an inflammed/irritated facet joint or an arthritic facet joint - am interested to know the results of *Bob and Brad's* reference to the rabbit study on the arthritis which got better from keeping the joints moving unweighted, compared to the rabbits which had their joints locked in position whose arthritis got worse - that wouldn't be referring to the boney growths going would they?).
Hope you have found or find the solutions you're looking for soon Amer...and wishing you all the best!
Bob and Brad, I have bolded your names in the above message to hopefully draw your attention to a few questions I have :). Thank you!
Thanks for the time put into writing that reply, I really appreciate it.
The extreme, brain numbing pain I get when I try to lean forward, to do something as simple as tying my shoe laces, is depressing me, and I some times just cant do it and ask for help... I am 29 years old and have always been a hardcore athlete, going to gym every day, and playing football basketball and tennis through out the whole week. Suddenly I cant even tie my own shoe laces !!! Its a drastic change in life style and its getting to me... I have been diagnosed with a degenerated and herniated l5-s1 disc, but the pain im having is not going down my legs. It is concentrated on the bottom right of my spine and spreads alittle down to my buttock. It is mainly aggravated when I sit down or lean forward. I have been newly diagnosed with Facet joint syndrome, but everywhere I read that with a facet joint syndrome, you can feel better by sitting down and leaning forward but this is exactly what causes my pain ! Im very confused !
Amer Rabbat did you find any solution for your back problem?
I do all of these and my back still hurts, I’m 22 - disc fusion in my near future 😍
Have u got an MRI?
If you have only disc issues disc replacement is better than fusion but ofc first of all keep going until you can without surgery
what if you can't get on your knees - (knee replacement - history of knee fracture on the other knee)
How old are you guys?
I hurt on the cat/camel. What does that mean?
dudes, cat cow!! cat is the arched back, cow is the swayed back ;) and he didn't do down dog, he did child pose... wide knees, tail back toward the feet. Great content though even if the names are wrong
