I love how the Jaguar core went from "This core is dead right? It's totally dead." to "WTF it's practically done!".🔥
And so fast too. Nobody saw it coming
Hopefully with all the consoles nearing completion, developers have more time to look at computer cores We're still missing a few systems that would fit very nicely on the mister
And arcade. Don’t forget my first love
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yes! would love to see more Taito love, I believe Rbislands is on Jose's todo list, and ninja warriors pcb was donated to some dev? the fact that Growl, Chase h.q/sci, operation wolf/thunderbolt, crime city, aren't on mister hurts my nostalgic heart. Heck I'd even throw in wild cards like Violence fight/solitary fighter, Final blow etc.
We need them all!
Yes we need Juno First and Pacland arcade cores@@VideoGameEsoterica
This doesn't look like a Jaguar game, it looks way better 😁
Haha gets the advantage of HDMI
I still have all my games, but I had to sell my Atari Jaguar during a rough patch. Too expensive right now to buy a new one, so I’m really excited about this.
Jaguar hardware is somehow absurdly expensive these days
No kidding. I bought the console with cables controllers and eight games all boxed and one still sealed for a few hundred total. Now the cheapest I see for just the console is 400.
@rargafragaman skyrocketing prices
I have ROMs for two early homebrew Atari Jaguar titles that could be useful to test them: Mad Bodies and Black Out! I could lend them to somebody for testing to see if they work on the Jaguar MiSTer cores.
Contact me on Twitter
@VideoGameEsoterica i posted the ROMs via your AtariAge profile ^_^
Brilliant!!! Raiden looks and sounds great! Looking forward to a public version. I hope theres someway around the dual ram, just because i use the IO board.
It’s public. Just gotta dl the core on discord
@@VideoGameEsoterica Thanks! Yeah, I mean public as in "update all" =D
@GadgetUK164 ahh. Then he’s a little bit
My brother-in-law used to work at the tip and said he regularly threw Atari Jaguars away. He was pissed when he learned how much they are worth now. The dump wouldn't let them keep anything they had to throw in the skip. Of course, they would pocket small things.
I hate when they destroy good working hardware
@@VideoGameEsoterica Not sure I'd describe the Jaguar as "good" working hardware! 😆
Haha it has its charms
This is fantastic I hope there will be an update to the CD-i core soon, too The great thing about the mister is also SPDIF digital out if you that connection The sound coming out of this crystal clear
I bet you see a CD-i update soon
This core is truly amazing, well worth going to a dual ram build. For those wondering avp is slow on real hardware too, it's not the core.
Yes AvP was a slideshow on a real jag
Raiden. Great game for the Jaguar VGE. I love this game. 8^)
After playing the ps1 version in raiden project i find i hard to go back to other ports, but definitely curious on this one. I think the pce version is the one i like most after that one, will give this version a try. One of my favourite things about mister is how easy it is to compare games over multiple systems and/or arcade!
It’s a classic
@ Played it, let's agree to disagree.
Cool to see how the Jaguar core is improving.
I wonder if FPGA could be used to make a core that "fixed" the various hardware bugs in the Jaguar. I'm sure games would need to be altered to be able to run with the changes, and there's probably zero market for such a thing, but I'd be really interested in seeing what the system would have been capable of if the bugs had been corrected. I'd be excited even if we only got some homebrew tech demos to show the difference in performance.
Back when it launched I desperately wanted a Jaguar, and almost bought one instead of the SNES (glad I came to my senses! 😅), so it would be awesome to see it reach its full potential.
Someone else asked that and yes it’s possible but that goes from replication code to reworking the silicon at the gate and logic level. Which is a BIG lift
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah it would be an insanely big ask for very, VERY little reward. But it would also be amazing. Hopefully someone out there is the right mix of crazy and talented, but I'm not holding my breath.
Would be fun to see all things considered
Can’t wait till we see CD support 👍
Hopefully it happens
I wonder if BigPEmu (software emulator) has these same hard-coded Jaguar console bugs or was the developer able to patch/fix these in the emulator code? Great video by the way....thanks for this!
That’s a really good question and I’m not sure
I don’t think BigPEmu fixes the bugs by default. It does however have enhancements which can make games run better (60fps modes) and even add modes like multiplayer support to AvP through scripts.
@asmrdestiny it is nice to get the improvements
I wouldn't trust an emulator that do not have the same bugs that the original hardware ;p
@@Romerco77 The dev did have access to full documentation etc IIRC.
Awesome! A perfect example of why i love the MiSTer. I've never had much luck with Jag emulation, always glitchy or runs too fast. And as you mention prices of the hardware are through the roof.
Could try BigPEmu. Very good software emulation
It'd be interesting if the core (like N64 and others for performance enhancing) built in the ability to turn on and off the "errors in the hardware" that hamper performance. Essentially fix the errors to experience games the way the hardware devs intended, or turn it off to experience them the way it was released!
It could be done but it would be a ton of work
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah, I wondered about that!
Instead of buying the abandoned Analog Duo, I should have bought a Mister instead.
The Analog Duo latest update still will play Raiden sound incorectly 50% of the time you start the game.
Atari should release an Atari Jaguar mini.
Dual-RAM is not the only way to play this, there is a single-RAM version of this core now too. It apparently has lower compatibility and slowdown, but I don't have a real Jaguar or a dual-RAM setup to test that. I tried it with a dozen or so games, including Rayman, Alien vs Predator, and Raiden. They all seemed to work. Only issues I encountered were graphical corruption in Attack of the Mutant Penguins which I have no idea if it's also present on the dual-RAM core, and slowdown on Raiden but I am not sure if that's also in the dual-RAM or even on the original hardware. Overall though the single RAM core was running surprisingly well from what I was able to test o fit.
I must have just forgotten when I did VO
Can you review the new version of open MSX emulator?
Perhaps in the future
Can you test DOOM? The attract/demo mode speed indicates if the core is cycle accurate or not. BigPemu is not cycle accurate (yet) so it needs a per-game config to run this particular game at the actual correct speed for now. Does the FPGA core run it at the correct speed? It should be around 20fps.
I can check next tests
On the positive side: This will hopefully help make real Jaguars cheaper to pick up.
On the negative: More systems capable of playing Jag games means that more people will want to grab the few solid Jag games, making them more expensive.
Haha yep. Two sides of the same coin
@VideoGameEsoterica I'm just glad the Game Drive works well enough (on a real Jag) save for issues with the Jag CD games.
and with the Reflex Adapt, you can use a real Jaguar controller, yes, with...overlays lol
Haha the overlays make all the diff
That dual RAM though 🙄
Single now too
I still have a Jag with Raiden and without side by side comparison, I don't notice a difference.. One of the best games for Jag is Tempest 2000 with Spinner Controller. That's the gold standard.
Tempest is a classic and one of the reasons to own a Jaguar
@@VideoGameEsoterica As awful as the Jaguar was and as much as I like to mock it, Tempest 2000 was (and is) excellent.
So is AvP imo
Erm? It has a single ram version too now, though. Might not play Raiden in single if that's what you meant?
Just was testing dual
I’d like to believe rich whitehouse’s contributions (and a little help from Atari themselves) made jag emulation a little more viable than previously
On the software side yes Rich basically made it all possible
Rich Whitehouse's emulator is closed-source: it had ZERO impact on making jag emulation more viable. Exactly ZERO. He did the emulator and has kept it's internal workings closed, so there's no knowledge to be gotten from his work.
What we see here is derived from the fact that the Jaguar hardware was opensouced by Hasbro. That's where the netlists that made this core possible came from.
That, and the excelent work from talented individuals like ElectronAsh and Greyrogue, who made the core open and publicly available. That's how things get to advance, not thanks to some closed-source emulator that gives back zero knowledge to the community.
Yes FPGA is a diff branch than software emulation. Rich made the software side work well
@@VideoGameEsoterica What Rich did has zero importance: he made HIS emulator work well, NOT emulation in general work well.
Since his emulator is CLOSED SOURCE, there's ZERO valuable information on it.
@manuelalfayatecorchete1806 but it’s still of valuable use
We need more arcade cores. CPS3 and Midway stuff will invalidate any future PCB purchases imo.
I’m sure more will be coming in 2025
@VideoGameEsoterica better be. I bought Mister for the arcade stuff, and while I love CPS2 amd Irem/Cave hardware, I want the PCBs that even Mame has problems with
4:48 I can’t help but assuming this Raiden track is essential influence to the game track of an iOS/Switch game called “infestor”
Love the game.. great track, but the tune is unmistakably Raiden 😂
Ooh not sure on that one. Will have to listen
Very cool. Do you think that running that core on single 128mb ram will be possible on the future?
It’s possible now :)
@VideoGameEsoterica Amazing! I thought you said that it only would work on dual ram. Regards my friend
Things changed since then :)
@VideoGameEsoterica Oh! Its great that the cores devs work so fast
@@VideoGameEsoterica I have to admit your 'dual memory' remark made me wonder when this video was made ;) Maybe you could a line of text somewhere telling 'us' that single core has come a long way as well?
Could you make a video for the Single ram one too
I will in the future
Hmm, so the Taki Super Station won't run this? I haven't yet owned a Mister so the Super Station will be my first one, and IIRC it doesn't have dual RAM. Is it possible to upgrade the Super Station with dual RAM?
It runs on single now too
@@VideoGameEsoterica Awesome, thank you.
👍
Someone needs to get Jotego on this one. That team can probably get that going pretty quickly.
Core already has devs
Alien vs Predator?
Works well
CPS3 when?
2069 🤷🏻♂️
The Atari Jaguar was a hideous system with terrible games. Typical American/British garbage.
lol what do you like 🤣 always hate stuff
@@VideoGameEsoterica A good question. I like the PC-Engine, and the Sega Saturn, as far as consoles go. It was a great time in gaming...until it suddenly wasn't.
The death of these systems lead to Diablo 2 and Starcraft, which saved the day as far as gaming was concerned. It's a shame that company went to crap just like all the others, though.
Typical Jack Tramiel garbage. Some of the Western developed stuff was actually pretty good.
