Yeah, I'm mexican and the reasons why Emilia Pérez was so poorly received here include 1. The Spanish is terrible, not just the accents, but the words themselves are words no one uses ever and it feels like they were just throwing random words without understanding what they meant or how to use them. The english subtitles do a LOT of polishing very poor dialogue. Then, the whole narco trying to help people is insulting to many because it's a real problem, and things like finding dead bodies don't go the way the movie portrays it. Many people say that shouldn't matter because it's just a movie, but it's foreign people coming in and it feels irresponsible for them to portray this subject as if it was a Breaking Bad parody. Personally, I think the movie is simply bad. I've seen My fair share of weird foreign movies that are deep and 'people just don't get' and Emilia Pérez is easily the worst. The dialogue is dumb, the songs are dumb because the lyrics are dumb and had they used the words in the english subtitles it would have been much better. The story is cluncky and the whole 'let's help missing people' mission is extremely shallow, even if accuracy doesn't matter. Imagine Borat acting out the cave scene in Dune saying "Ah, chesss, I am de Lisan Al ga eeb!" And people clap...that's what it feels like when you can actually understand what they're saying in Spanish. Sorry for the Emilia Pérez hate...but come on, Dune deserves more love.
You know what? I was so annoyed when they gave Jaime Lee Curtis the Oscar for EEAAO. But everyone was like, “they gave it to her because they thought about the scope of her whole career and the fact that she didn’t have one yet. So they gave it to her.” I hated that. But if they are going to do that, fine, give Demi Moore her Oscar for not just The Substance but everything else in her career.
The funny thing about Fernanda Torres winning the Golden Globe is that she is one of the most famous Brazilian comedic actress. She. is. hilarious! Like almost pissing my pants hilarious. However, she is classically trained, what brings a whole new dimension.
Horror fans: Man, they never give awards to actresses in horror film. Globe: *goes to Demi Moore* Horror fans: Man, this is not right. They don't give awards to actresses in horror films.
I think there should be a clear criteria that is met in order to win these awards. I’ve seen a lot of people upset that Astro bot won GOTY and they have all these reasons, but in reality it’s because their favorite didn’t win. So many award shows feel like this ceremonious vibe check rather than an objective measure of “the best” and that seems so weird to me.
thank god demi won💀💀 it's always the average film bros dismissing movies that push boundaries and don't fit with their average taste and actors that do something different demi winning is a huge deserved thing and hopefully she sweeps everything straight to the oscars
These award shows still serve a purpose. Parasite only really blew up in popularity after it won the Oscar’s. So if nothing else it brings attention to foreign and smaller films. Also if a film gets award buzz it’ll go back in theaters. I wanted to see Drive My Car but it only showed for one weekend in my city. Once it got nominated it got more showings so I was able to see it
I'm so glad Challengers won Best Score. The score is what really takes the movie over the top for me. Although my favorite moment of the night was when they were announcing the nominees for Best Actor in a Drama and they cut to Sebastian Stan who made a face like "seriously? this is ridiculous, I just won five minutes ago."
I'm trying so hard to be more positive in general but I have been seething over Emilia Perez winning best comedy/musical for over 24 hours at this point
For those who haven't seen it yet, please watch I'm Still Here, one of the best films of the year, Fernanda Torres gives the perfomance of her life. It's about a mother having to deal with the disappeareance of her husband in the context of the military dictorship in Brazil. Incredible script, perfomances and cinematography.
Usually Golden Globes are the foreshadowing of the Oscars and I’m kinda excited about the Oscar winners… but now I’m just worried. Nobody who I thought was gonna win or clean house did not. Somehow Emilia Perez ran away with four awards. I don’t know one person who loved that movie lmao
Hello Kursten! I love your content and I'm a Mexican film lover. I live in Ciudad de México where the main story of Emilia Pérez takes place. This could help bring some context on how this film has been received in our country. A lot of film enthusiasts and critics with good intentions think that the movie represents both México and France (It is just France) or at least as filmmaker Xavier Dolan wrote in an IG post: "Created a lot of opportunities for Mexican artists" when in reality the cast of the film is compressed of mostly U.S actors, or elsewhere like Gascon who is from Spain. Most of them can't speak Spanish, and it shows. And the ones who can speak Spanish didn't research the accents. Ciudad de México has its own particular set of accents, if people from the city visit other states we are pretty easy to spot, this is a crucial element that the film omits, not only the accents, but the dialogue is completely horrendous, no one here, and I do mean no one, talks like that. Actually, Mexico is the last country where this movie is premiering. After a horrible screening at the FICM (Mexico's most prestigious film festival), they completely ignored Mexican audiences and criticisms, realizing that the entire theatre was laughing at the performances. Many scenes from the movie have become memes and actually managed to go viral despite the film not being released here. The director admitted to not doing any research about the country his movie takes place in, this shows in scenes like Rita cracking a case on a Mercado, and drinking wine while doing so. First of all, it's illegal to drink on the streets in Mexico City, mercados are ambulant shops in the middle of the streets, and no lawyer works on them, in fact, no one outside of the vendors does, these are really popular and noisy places, also no Mercado I have ever been to in my 28 years since I was born here has ever sold wine. However, these are just nitpicks, bad directing, horrible, disgustingly bad research (or lack of it). Emilia Pérez's greatest sin comes from the fact that the hero of the story is dealing with a very delicate subject matter, I can't possibly describe on a RUclips comment, it will get me banned. This is completely disrespectful to the thousands and thousands of families who have lost their loved ones. I've seen plenty talk about how no foreigner should talk about this subject matter... But Dennis Villanueva did it, despite receiving some hate for doing Sicario, no one called it unprofessional (personally I think is amazing) because the team did the research. Teodora Mihai who is from Romania did it again with: "La Civil" a fantastic movie about a mother looking to find her missing daughter and risking her life in the process, it was filmed in México with a Mexican team of consultants, the result depicts Mexico's harsh reality, so truly the audiences were shocked to find out she wasn't a Mexican herself. How can something so flawed be called masterful? What details are they awarding? Because there are also plenty of goofs inside the very filmmaking itself. I hope this helps, or at least wasn't a chore to read, as it was a chore to sit through that movie :)
I'm not very knowledgeable about the awards circuit. Can someone explain to me why a film like Dune Part Two gets such little recognition and has 0 chance at best director, picture etc. at the Oscars? Despite it being a massive cinematic event and getting rave reviews?
Because dune is a trilogy, they are waiting to see if they can stick the landing and then award it (which is kind of stupid, as dune and messiah are two different books and stories). It’s also the fact it came out so early so films that came out later in the year get recency bias, which is very common during awards season. It’s unfortunate because it was one of the best films of the year and villeneuve could get snubbed again
I think it's also because most award shows often feel like like an inside joke, if you're not in on it, then it might not make as much sense. Something like the oscars wants to appear a certain way, so the success of a film doesn't always corilate with it doing well. That's just my take.
They had Jo Koy do the golden globes and he had no prep on top of the fact that his comedy isn’t geared towards celebrity culture/hollywood, so it all fell horribly flat to say the least
I know you don’t watch much TV, but I can’t recommend Shōgun enough. Each episode is like a mini-movie. The acting, the writing, the production value, all some of the best I’ve ever seen on TV.
The AI announcer and the fact no one brought up Israel at all while in past shows they were very open against wars really were the big downsides of the show.
Happy shes finally getting the recognition shes long deserved but I do hate with as many great films that Zoe has been in, the one award she wins for is one of the most hated films in awards season history.

I feel like Karsten never actually watched The Substance LOL
A fellow Latvian person here - hearing Kursten speak about Flow is f amazing!
i’m glad that demi moore won.
"you don't walk away from that film thinking about her performance" kurst who you speaking for bro
As much as I love demi, it has to be mikey's oscar
@@Purv_soni951Mickey is very new.. be realistic..
its a never ending cycle of giving actors awards years later than they deserved to win
The funny thing about Fernanda Torres winning the Golden Globe is that she is one of the most famous Brazilian comedic actress. She. is. hilarious! Like almost pissing my pants hilarious. However, she is classically trained, what brings a whole new dimension.
Please watch I’m still here!!! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 we are so proud of Fernanda
Horror fans: Man, they never give awards to actresses in horror film.
Globe: *goes to Demi Moore*
Horror fans: Man, this is not right. They don't give awards to actresses in horror films.
This kind of negativity is really tiresome. I know it's a constant fight for clicks on yt but these rants are soooo damn boring.
I think there should be a clear criteria that is met in order to win these awards. I’ve seen a lot of people upset that Astro bot won GOTY and they have all these reasons, but in reality it’s because their favorite didn’t win. So many award shows feel like this ceremonious vibe check rather than an objective measure of “the best” and that seems so weird to me.
thank god demi won💀💀
it's always the average film bros dismissing movies that push boundaries and don't fit with their average taste and actors that do something different
demi winning is a huge deserved thing and hopefully she sweeps everything straight to the oscars
Anything is better than Jo koy 😭
Waiting for your "I'm Still Here" impressions!!! 🇧🇷
suspiciously bad takes in this
That mikey madison loss killed my whole vibe for this award season
She was never going to win. Too much of a newcomer.
Bro Karsten. What the hell are you talking about Demi Moore. It’s literally cinematic illiteracy.
Karsten, this is my favorite RUclips channel.
My dude, you need to watch The Substance again 😅
I don’t get what you mean by Margaret qualley and demi Moore “not doing a lot” in the substance… they were doing the most
I'm trying so hard to be more positive in general but I have been seething over Emilia Perez winning best comedy/musical for over 24 hours at this point
"Demi Moore didn't do much in The Substance"
Bro did you even watch the movie lol
FERNANDA TORRES, BRASIL CARALHOOO
I’m very glad Flow won best animated feature, hope it will do great things for Zilbalodis’s career and independent animation as a whole
emilia perez isn’t even available in mexico
@@jackdaniel2457 interesting, thank you for the thoughtful reply. I wish it was more of a meritocracy…
I think it's also because most award shows often feel like like an inside joke, if you're not in on it, then it might not make as much sense. Something like the oscars wants to appear a certain way, so the success of a film doesn't always corilate with it doing well. That's just my take.
@@CuriousCaleb Oppenheimer wasn’t much of an inside joke…
bc it came out in march and its a part of a trilogy
anora got snubbed like crazy
CHALLENGERS WON BEST SCORE? WOO 🥳 idc about anything else, I'm so glad it won
the substance being in the comedy category is crazy
Kursten has completed his substance treatment to transform into Ralphthemoviemaker
I’m so upset Steve Martin or Martin Short DIDNT win !
0:36 wait what happened at last years golden globes?
They had Jo Koy do the golden globes and he had no prep on top of the fact that his comedy isn’t geared towards celebrity culture/hollywood, so it all fell horribly flat to say the least
Been waiting for this since the tweets
if Dune doesn't sweep the Oscars, the industry is cooked
I’m afraid it won’t get properly recognised at all
Considering how the academy usually treats Sci-Fi films
Damn dune 2 was forgotten
Love the videos, man. Keep it up!!!
I was a little surprised Edward Norton did not win but I was also so happy for Kieran Culkin!
Demi would be a cool win. Natalie Portman won her Oscar for Black Swan
everyone PLEASE go watch I'm still here and understand the power of Fernanda Torres!!!!!!
I enjoyed Demi Moores speech it made me feel happy to see her talk about her experience
Demi Moore deserved it more than anyone. Her performance was amazing.
Are you going to review the Letterboxd Year in Review?
Nice Kallax, really ties the room together.
I know you don’t watch much TV, but I can’t recommend Shōgun enough. Each episode is like a mini-movie. The acting, the writing, the production value, all some of the best I’ve ever seen on TV.
I’m so sorry, the auto focus in this video hurt my eyes so much. Still listened tho cuz I love you man, just wow please stop😂
Idk why I haven’t seen more people talking about the sad irony that is Sebastian Stan winning and Adam Pearson not even being invited to the Golden Globes.
The same reason we have to sit in an office, make people feel "special"
