    As an Aussie, I am quite pleased to see Cynthia getting choked up by Cold Chisel's performance. Just nice to see that us Aussies are not inherently destined to be alone with an appreciation for Barnsey and the boys. As for me, I think I'm going to give a tick to John Farnham.

      The reason John’s voice resonates with me and it really means something is because John was the age all his mates were being sent off to the Vietnamese war, which is what it’s about. He puts in all the raw emotion of what it meant for his peers to be sent off to war by force. Jimmy has emotion but not the personal emotion John has. John sings the song the way the song deserves to be sung.

    • @7977nobby
      @7977nobby 8 месяцев назад

      The song is about a relationship breakup, not about the Vietnam war. Still I can see how people interpret the song that way. You can take many meanings from many songs. Steve Prestwich wrote the song and did a fantastic job.

    The history of the song is very interesting. Cold Chisel drummer Steve Prestwich wrote the song not long before Cold Chisel broke up. He then joined John Farnham in The Little River Band and the song was included as a regular in their concert set lists and also on the first album that both Johm and Steve were involved with, which is how John also had access to the song. In Australia there is no competition between Chisel, Barnes, Moss or Farnham they all are equally loved and all perfect in different ways. I love Ian's smooth intimate vocal tone, it's not my favourite vocal from Jimmy but the mix of Jimmy and Ian togther somehow ends up being perfect.
    John's version is vocal mastery, and he slides through the higher and lower registers like butter. Interestingly, people often think John has been classically trained, but he has never actually ever had any vocal training...it's a natural gift. He just loves and lives to sing as much as he can all day every day. Although i beleive like most great singers both John and Jimmy have used vocal coaches over the years.
    In Australia, we wholehearted love both versions. I agree the intimacy of the Chisel version can bring the emotions out, but the passion in Farnhams voice also does the same.
    John and Jimmy are also great freinds and they have even performed this song togther as well.
    Thankyou for your reaction I'm glad you found the Chisel performance so emotional. Just goes to show what a great song it is.❤

My musical Oz memories ended with Ronnie Burns on Countdown, Johnny Farnham with Sadie, Normie Row before Vietnam and, of course, the legendary Bee Gees and ONJ on Bandstand. What an era. • @Saan42
    @Saan42 10 месяцев назад +8

    John is not a "beautifully trained" singer. Whilst he's probably had some singing lessons in his life (as I'm sure has every singer who's serious about it), John is not "trained" in the sense that people would usually use the word. You can listen to him at the age of 22 and hear how beautiful his voice is and how naturally he sings. He doesn't hit a note wrong even then, and had that beautiful tone right from the beginning.
    Since you love Cold Chisel, may I recommend a duet with John and Jimmy Barnes? Do a RUclips search for "hey hey it's saturday when something is wrong with my baby". The song is called When Something Is Wrong With My Baby, and that search will give you the best version which is a live performance on a TV show.

Will always be a Chisel song for me and live is the best - saw them in a huge old ballroom [Cloudland] in Brisbane and they, like John just have so much more feeling in a live. John is good but it will always be Cold Chisel for me. The song had meaning for Steve Prestwich [Cold Chisel drummer] who wrote it, and it has a different meaning for each person who hears it. Usually very personal. Better left not explained and have your own take whether it is a returned soldier, the aftermath of domestic arguments, or so many other life altering incidents. It comes down to the fact that is a heartfelt beautifully written song.

    Realistically John’s version isn’t really a full on cover it’s kind rerecording but not a cover .
    Because
    When The War Is Over was written by late drummer Steve Prestwich originally from Cold Chisel .
    But after Cold Chisel originally broke up in 1983 Steve Prestwich joined once hugely successful in America , Australia band the Little River Band while John Farnham was the lead singer from 1982 to 1986 . Steve stayed with LRB for 2 underrated albums Playing To Win 1984 and No Reins 1986 . Steve was in the same financial predicament as John Farnham while in LRB only songwriters was getting paid through the royalties all the money the band made went towards paying off their debts from touring America .
    So Steve agreed to let LRB add When The War Is Over the their Playing To Win tour 1985 .
    Well John fell in love with the song and LRB founding member Graham Goble agreed to LRB to re-record it on their No Reins album . By the time No Reins was released both Steve and John had left LRB . LRB’s record company Capital Records only released LRB’s version as a single to capitalise on John’s solo success with You’re The Voice being number 1 on the Australian charts in December 1986 .
    Sadly LRB’s version didn’t chart because the lack of promotion behind it . John tried he’s best adding the song to solo set lists .
    In 1988 John solo record company BMG requested John to record When The War Is Over again to used a B side bonus track , apparently John was very reluctant to re record it again . He was happy to leave the song with LRB but he wasn’t happy with recording process he was put through with the producer on the LRB version . So John going back into studio on he’s own term with song with his own producer he was more content with .
    Little River Band version the vocal harmonies can’t get any better .

    The only liking I have for ''When the War Is over'' is the memories I have when I heard it on the radio many moons ago. Hearing with fresh ears, I feel it's a bit of a bummer of a song and no matter who sings it, it's energy draining. Cold Chisel sound like a band that's been on a long winding road for too long, and John Farnham sounds like he's just about to sing ''Oh Lordy, Lordy''.
    I can't go for either. No can do.

    I got onto Chisel as early as 1977 because I lived in Potts Point in Sydney and would see the Chisel boys in Kings Cross. I got in when they were very raw, and ''When The War Is Over'' was to me what ''Losing My Religion'' would be to very early REM fans. It's just a radio song. So, my opinion of who did a better performance swings to neither.

    There's no real competition. John's heart and soul wins every time. Cold Chisel is awesome, but the song just lags and gets...boring until Jimmy comes in and refreshes it a little. I'm sorry, but Ian who sings most of it really doesn't have a lot of emotion there, particularly compared to John. Ian Moss was never a great lead singer - that's why he didn't have the big solo singing career like John and Jimmy did (he had minimal success solo for this reason)... Songs have to have emotion for me, and I just didn't feel it until Jimmy joined. John does it better. And this wasn't one of his better performances. He did this song much better when he was younger.
    Also John Farnham is NOT a trained singer. He had a couple lessons when he was a young teen and that's it. He learned on the road. He's a complete natural.

    I think it’s quite obvious to the unbiased that John Farnhams version was far superior, and I’m saying that from a position of being totally unfamiliar with both acts ( ok I know your the voice but apart from that , zero ) .
    The song itself is pretty standard stuff and it’s ok , if the guy on the guitar in the 1st vid had continued on his own maybe my experience would’ve been different , but their whole song was ruined by the other singer coming in at halfway and his voice was shocking , strained and in places off key .
    For sheer professionalism and nailing it on the night it’s gotta be John Farnham imho

    Great song. Lots of reactions out there on it. I don’t know why it’s always on the live version.
    Jimmy blew out his vocals around the Circus Animals album. He could still belt out a song after that, but the real soul is most evident around the East and Circus Animals era.
    The mastery in the studio version of the arrangement and the vocal change from Mossy to Jimmy and Ian’s beautiful solo, the BVs. It’s all there in the studio version, and I know I’ll get hated on for saying it, but Jimmy’s voice here isn’t anywhere near as good as it was on the studio version.

The only thing that could make this worse would be to bring Celine Dion on stage to duet with him.
