    • @garrondumont7891
      @garrondumont7891 5 лет назад +39

      @@newaccount90356 It's important to note the difference in their methods though. Destin was at the dame place doing 5 minutes a day according to him. Mike was doing 15 in the start. After two days Mike devoted the time Destin would in 6. And, keep in mind that although it takes more patience, if you don't normalise something foe your brain it's going to take longer to learn. So Mike was not only cramming his time together more, he was spending it more efficiently because he forced his brain to work in a different way than Destin did. With Destin he probably only made a tiny bit of progress each day that vanished after his brain rested for the night. For Mike, he made mire progress each day, and with the same amount vanishing each night he should learn it significantly faster than Destin without affecting other pathways, unlike Destin who tried to rewire the old ones. That's exactly what we see in the video.

    • @grayskindablue
      @grayskindablue 5 лет назад +12

      To be fair, Destin was only doing it a few minutes a day, while using his brain power for lots of other things (I assume work, cooking, cleaning up, family.) Mike could cram all those months of daily, few minute sessions into several hours over a few consecutive days, with his brain problem-solving fairly consistently. It’s cool, but also apples and oranges.

    • @waynelin6238
      @waynelin6238 4 года назад +90

      I would actually think that would be easier. It's learning how to make a continuous movement, as opposed to learning how to make micro-adjustments.

    • @Ivan_Imperator
      @Ivan_Imperator 4 года назад +11

      Wayne Lin people have different opinions I see how it would be easier because of our mindset but honestly it would be more complex because you have too focus on more than one thing at a time, like say riding a bike normally for example do you focus on pedaling or steering? Most people focus on steering while on the backwards bike they still have to focus on steering. If you replace the pedal movement you have more than one thing to focus on which can be harder on your brain.

      Another idea to add to this would be to add the reverse brake to the gear system so if you try to pedal forwards it engages the brakes. That would make it really difficult to ride because any accidental forwards pedal would stop the bike making you have to restart.

    This is how us motorcycle people feel when we try to explain counter steering.
    Push the left bar forward, the bike leans left. Very counterintuitive. People never understand it. It's only something you understand when you actually ride a motorcycle or a bicycle fast.

    I think that if you visualise it as the handle bar as an arrow pointing to the side you're turning to, the concept sounds easier:
    When you turn the handlebar to the right, the handle bar would be pointing left, left hand forward. And vive versa.
    Just a thought, dont know if it could help

  • @voxlvalyx
    @voxlvalyx 7 лет назад +70

    Some people seem to think he had an easier time because he didn't have to turn, but I think actual turns would be easier. Turning is a big deal, so you divert your full attention to it. All you have to do is stop and think that's it's backwards and you can turn just fine. It's most likely all the tiny steering corrections to keep going straight that are harder because you do those almost entirely by reflex, and it's really hard to retrain your reflexes.
    If you've ever tied your shoelaces together, then momentarily forgot about it and tried to walk normally and tripped, it's probably a lot like that.

    • @andymcl92
      @andymcl92 5 лет назад +5

      Next time you're out on your bike, rest your hands behind the handlebars so you can only push each side forward, not pull back. Then try and turn the bike. You might be surprised to find your brain thinks a lot more about turning than you realise!
      (I.e. you actually make tiny corrections before you start a turn.)

    I’ve seen a lot of people commenting wondering if someone who doesn’t know how to bike would fine it easier to learn this and switch. I believe that this bike would still be FAR harder for them to learn than a normal one. We has humans are basically programmed with the right-right left-left mindset. Just because they can’t ride a normal bike wouldn’t take that away. Perhaps if they had spent years riding one of these, maybe then the switch would be hard. But I think they’d get the hang of it quickly and find it much easier either way, that’s just my opinion though.

    I haven’t finished the video but the best method of this would be to do wide angles with slow transitioning turns. For example, start going left (bars pointed right) and keep it steady, after a few meters slowly start turning your handle bars to the left in order to transition to the right. This is about like learning to back a vehicle trailer into a space (just a reverse method). The biggest step is to recognize the change of direction and apply it as a new skill rather than relying on what you previously thought was the proper way to drive a bicycle.

    The problem is that this isn’t a simple case if turn right to go left. Because of the angle of the fork of a bike, you really don’t need your hands to steer, and that’s actually how I ride. Because of that angle, the bike steers itself based of how you lean, rather them how you turn the handle bars. With this bike, you can never steer the bike normally, but just reversed. You actually have to completely re think how you steer. Very impressive

    I bet you any amount of money that I could do this the very first time I attempted it ;) I attempted to ride one of these bikes once at a fairground for £20 through a long slalom of cones turning around the last cone and then riding back slaloming the cones again. I did it first attempt.

    Guy who made this learnt that in 8 months and this guy learned it in a week
    That guy tried to proved it, if you learnt it in 7 days
    Tells you that how active his brain is because of learning skills
    Loved it

    At a summer camp I was as a really young kid they at they had a backwards bike I tried riding it every day. They had a challenge that if you could ride it 100 feet you win $20 for the cantine (the most expensive items were only 75 cents so $20 was a ton).
    I worked every day to learn it and I really didn’t get anywhere the first couple days. After being stubborn and every gave up because they all were tired I got the bike to myself and then I was able to learn how to ride it. It really suprised the guy who had made it as a joke because he thought it would be impossible to ride.
    This was before Smarter Every Day got the bike so I think I could have been one of the first people to learn how to ride one. They guy who made the bike I rode was also close with they guy who made the bike for smarter every day later so I feel proud to know I proved maybe that it was possible to ride one.
    Btw this was like 2013 and I can’t find anything on backwards bikes being made that early. If I’m wrong pls correct me.
