That is PRECISELY how it hit when I was 15 and stuck in a VERY abusive home, surrounded by boys at school who were scared of me but wanted to play with me at the same time. This walking implosion. Constantly cracking, never actually breaking.
My middle school teacher would give us listening assignments and he would play a song for us and he played a tv on the radio song for us and I fell in love. Thanks Mr Cowan. You’re the fucking man.
Even though I've listened to this song since 2005, I still expect a beat drop or break down of some sort halfway through. Tension. It's very near to a perfect song.
Hard to believe this is 12 years old. Feels like yesterday, in 07 hearing this for the first time. Can't find music like this anymore. I'm getting old and starting to feel the "lock in" of my gen of music.

I actually watched this on MTV once. It was late at night on some indie music block. Maybe one of the last times I ever watched an actual interesting music video on MTV. I also remember seeing Arcade Fire on that program for the first time.
I think that the reason people wonder why someone could possibly 'dislike' this (though a song like this only deserves to inspire hate) is because it's so fucking otherworldly brilliant.
Never seen em live but it’s so nastagic for me any of thier songs takes me back middle school my brother blairring this cleaning on a Sunday morning with the family wish I could go back

If anyone didn’t know this song is inspired by the Rumi poem No Room For Form... NO ROOM FOR FORM On the night when you cross the street From your shop and your house To the cemetery You’ll hear me hailing you from inside The open grave, and you’ll realize How we’ve always been together. I am the clear consciousness-core Of your being, the same in Ecstasy as in self-hating fatigue. That night, when you escape your fear of snakebite And all irritations with the ants, you’ll hear My familiar voice, see the candle being lit, Smell the incense, the surprise meal fixed By the lover inside all your other lovers. This heart tumult is my signal to you igniting in the tomb. So don’t fuss with the shroud And the graveyard dust. Those get ripped open and washed away In the music of our final meeting. And don’t look for me in human shape, I am inside your looking. No room For form with love this strong. Beat the drum and let the poets speak. This is the day of purification for those who Are already mature and initiated into what love is. No need to wait until we die! There’s more to want here than money And being famous and bites of roasted meat. Now, what shall we call this new sort of gazing house That has opened in our town where people sit Quietly and pour out their glancing Like light, like answering?
Took me years to find this song. I had one line "across the street from something cemetery" it drove me mad So glad I found it, the memory this song holds. Getting high on my own, in bed at my mom and dad's house feeling so content young and free 😆 I look back and think where did all that time go.
Saw these guys at pitchfork in 2012 i think it was. they rocked and they did a nice version of Keep Your Heart which i feel the sadness in the air pouring from their souls. Also they did a nice of version of A Method with Shabazz Palaces making an appearance on stage with them, and towards the end they did a badass cover of Fugazi's waiting room and of course Wolf Like Me was mind blowing, if you get a chance to see these guys perform especially outside at night then take it.
2008, post prom. Me and four of my closest friends watched the sunrise over a farm with this song blaring from a parked car after a rager prom party. I’ll never forget that night.
Masterclass songwriting and one of the most underrated bands ever. I saw them live early in clubs and later in big venues - one of the few bands that translated even better live. Come back please #tvotr
Saw em open for nine inch nails like 5 years after hearing this song for the first time time and never knowing who it was. Always come back for a listen
Back when I first heard this song, I think I remember it taking a while for me to like it. But now that I do, I can't stop liking it more and more... It's such a comforting song, despite the somewhat depressing lyrics. The sound is fuzzy and warm and enveloping--like a blanket, like a universe. And I love the funky sine-wavy video :) Feel kind of sorry for people who think it's like a fart.

this song can be about like whatever u want if u think about it. this song brings back sooo many memories and even if some of them arent good i just HAVE to listen to it. Its genius! and ooh i just love it soo much!
This song makes my facial EXPRESSION and body language change so much that it looks like I need a sedative , or to be wormed.. BUT trust me, I'm totally into the groove and everything about THIS
+ryan wilson Maybe it's about doing something you know is bad for you in a desperate search for the profound, for meaning? It's about a loneliness that can lead you on destructive search for connections with the world, the universe, and other people. Or I dunno, maybe it's just pretty nonsense, a musical Rorschach test
+Ian Robertson I think you've found a pretty valid hypothesis there! If you're right. It's probably why I feel like it's relatable to me. Orrrr, as you said, it all could just be nonsense haha
+ryan wilson It's undoubtedly about dying. It's just a well written poem about experiencing your own death. He's "staring at the sun" because he's on his back dying "Your bodies over me" is his loved ones trying to help or being with him as he passes. "All the tumults done" (tumult meaning "noise and confusion" because death brings peace which is also why "His concious is clear" and he can't tell if what he's feeling is "pain or ecstasy" He knows his body is in pain from what ever is killing him but it's bringing him to peace. Then the final verse is "letting loose lips kiss him" (his loved ones saying good bye) while his soul trancends "pouring out like light, like answering to the sun", which people with near death experiences recall seeing. Also after explaining about the pain and ecstacy he's feeling, he says "And we were all weaned my dearUpon the same fatigue". He wants you to not feel sad that he died, but happy that he lived.
+ryan wilson I felt a similar thing - physically! It would be interesting to run a spectral analysis of this song and see what else gets picked up on top of the audio we're hearing
edstorlie The band revealed the meaning of the song in an interview, I was literally quoting their lead singer. You should feel REALLY embarassed haha. The lyrics are plain as day wtf, hahaha.
Saw these guys on tour when they opened for the faint years back. While waiting for the faint’s Merch booth to clear(or open, I don’t remember anymore but it’s irrelevant), these guys started. They were good. Eh, they were great. But when they played this. It was harder. It fucking rocked. That faint shirt that thought it was coming home with me already knew what was up. They rocked. And it was awesome. Just for the record, the faint also rocked too. They were double fucking awesome and it was banging. But tv just caught me by surprise in the best of ways that night. I miss la zone rosa...
I don’t think people actually realize just how futuristic this song really was. Way ahead of its time. Nobody was using 808 in 2003 unless it was for house music. Hip-hop producers weren’t even using 808 Beats like that.
Wishing you all well from 2021! Finally found this song after looking for it for a couple weeks, and it's just as good as I remember. Here's hoping someone will find this in about 5 years or so.
I love the restrained tension in that song, and the fact that it never breaks out and remains unresolved. That's beautiful.
That is PRECISELY how it hit when I was 15 and stuck in a VERY abusive home, surrounded by boys at school who were scared of me but wanted to play with me at the same time. This walking implosion. Constantly cracking, never actually breaking.
Like a lot of us sadly, it portrays that pretty well.
Took me nine years to reply to this and I don't know why.
Perfect commentary.
Yes. You initially might want the drop, the crashing drums, the transition to the "next level." It never comes and you come to appreciate that.
My middle school teacher would give us listening assignments and he would play a song for us and he played a tv on the radio song for us and I fell in love. Thanks Mr Cowan. You’re the fucking man.
