I've been dabbling in microcrochet because it's so much cheaper to by thread than yarn. 😂 I like the process of crocheting, just the material prices hurt me sometimes. My first few micro projects, I used a regular crochet pattern, using the micro hook and thread, but the size was all off and I had to improvise with the pattern halfway through, so I always wondered if all micro crochet patterns are exclusive to micro and not interchangeable with regular sized crochet.
Short answer: yes, you can use regular patterns, BUT... Long answer: if you want to work in a certain scale, you will probably have to adjust either the patterns or the thread/hook combination you are using, crochet swatches + do some math. It's much easier for things like blankets or amigurumi, but harder when you start making things like clothing where fit is important. I use a 0.4 mm hook and work in 1:12 scale, so theoretically patterns that call for a 4.5 or 5 mm hook should work without major adjustments (0.4 mm x12 = 4.8 mm) - but don't quote me on that! The other way around is much trickier - if I wanted to follow a pattern that called for a 2.5mm hook, I'd have to go with a 0.2mm hook (the smallest I've seen is 0.35mm). That means I'd have to do a lot of adjustments and math to make the pattern work for the 1:12 scale and a larger hook. However, I often take inspiration from regular patterns and use them as a loose guide.
Always wondered if it was harder on the hands, good to know it isn't! I also go by the rule if it hurts to crochet stop. I love all of your tiny creations they are so unique 🧶
Your work is absolutely stunning. I am totally in love with your blankets. You inspire me! Keep making them and showing them to us.❤ Chantal from France
Your mini work is beautiful! Great video. First time I watch one of your videos. Thanks for all the tips. I was watching your video as I was crocheting with a 5mm hook and reg yarn! I will watch more of your videos. Is there a video tutorial on beginning an easy microcrochet project? Thanks!
I'm just starting with 0.5 mm Tulip hook and it feel so sharp that a wrong tug can tear the (cheap) cotton/embroidery thread that I use. Almost all of your preferred threads are so expensive here in Indonesia. It doesn't really that hard on my hand but I got callous on the tip of my middle finger from the way I use it to hold the project and insert the hook to the stitches 😅 Also in my experience from mostly made amigurumi, it's easier to micro crochet flat stuff than on the round bcs we have a lot more room to maneuver the hook. There's less chance your hook hooks the opposite stitch from the one you're working on 😅
I love doing miniature/ micro crochet amigurumi but seem to still struggle to do the first few rows as it's so hard to keep a hold of, do you have any tips for this? I normally use a DMC Perle 8 thread, anything smaller I cant really get a good grip on at all.
I buy mine online - Amazon, eBay or Etsy are my go-to places for the smallest hooks, Tulip and Clover are the brands I use the most (I have a link to all my tools & materials in the video description). If you are lucky, you can also find tiny hooks at thrift stores.

The urge to sit down and make this type of stuff is consuming me. Must finish human size blanket before i make fairy size blanket

Should you use a larger hook and thread if your goal is to make 1/6 scale fabric instead of 1/12 scale?
i cant even find 0.5mm here, where can i find these hooks?
Mine is from second hand or inherited from my great grandmother. The downside with this is that they do not have the size printed on them.
