Hi, Becky! This was a great video to watch - there aren't many on w/c pencils, and they don't get a good press, basically, because most folk haven't the right technique. You managed to avoid most of the usual pitfalls!!! Did you hear me shout for joy when you switched to a soft, watercolour brush? When using w/c pencils, we need to make sure that we have enough pigment on the paper before activating - in the same way that we layer ordinary pencils before using liquid blenders. If we don't, the paint just disperses into a pale, streaky mess! A second big mistake is that so many insist on using a water-brush with these. The problem there, as you found with your first brush, is that the firmer bristles (especially those of water brushes!) just move the pigment around and lifts most of it off. Because they don't need a lot of water, a small 35mm film canister, or something of a similar size, along with a travel brush is plenty for taking out with W/C pencils. And the *best* *tip* *of* * all* (!!!!), I only learned a couple of years ago, and it has revolutionised my results! This magic potion is simply glycerin. A couple of drops of glycerin into that small container of water is enough to make a _huge_ difference to the dissolving and flow! And it's not expensive, either, and won't harm our work - glycerin's already used as a humectant in our paints. I buy mine in small 100ml bottles from my local pharmacy, for about a €1. Buying it on the cookery aisle in the supermarket tends to be expensive (if we can find it!) and buying it from a pharmacy, where it will usually be used medicinally is wiser than other sources. Museum aquarelles may seem expensive, but as with the Luminance, ultimately, the core size and pigment load makes it worth the price. You may find that the colours you feel you're missing in the Supracolors are there in the Museum set. Using them, I find they feel much the same as the Supracolor, and the colours mostly match across the two sets. As you may have guessed by now, I've been using w/c pencils for years - and they work just as well as any other coloured pencil when dry, having a great range of colours and the advantage of not having a waxy sheen. I've a mixed set of (I think 77 in total) of Albrecht Durer, Supracolor, Museum, Staedtler Karat, Stabilo, a few Derwent, and even some Derwent Signature from when they were first released, and a very few WH Smith (a UK stationer), which are from the first set that I ever used. I haven’t any of the FC Magnus (= CD Museum), because they are rather large! Except for the Derwent, I love them all, and colours that aren’t available in some are there in others (a particular red from Stabilo, for example!) I don’t like the current Derwent wc pencils, They just aren’t up to scratch - though scratch is a valid word for these! I’ve noticed that ArtTubers give them the go-by, too. Phew! This is looong!!!!! I’ve finished it in a Word document, in case my elderly laptop decides to crash. I hope it’s been useful! Now I'm off to bed!!! 🛌 (this tiny green thing is a bed! 😊
Haha I am laughing at that very last line! I have all sets including the Derwents so guess who's going to end up doing a big old showdown of all of these! I have to review the other sets first though, lol. So many videos it's ridiculous. And yes, I am glad to know that juicy brushes are better - I will try the glycerine out too, that sounds like a really handy tip!
Glycerine and a soft brush, these are handy tips. I struggle with streakiness and have been using more pigment and less water to avoid pushing lots of wet pigment around, but I’ll try this.
Thank you Becky for talking about the difficulties you had with this. It makes those of us who most of the time don't know what we are doing feel a lot better.
I went and looked at a 12 set of Supracolor II Soft Caran D'ache pencils that I got for Christmas from my parents when I was around 14. So about 32 years ago and clueless me apparently didn't realise they were watercolour pencils...... I may just have to try them out. They don't even have colour names on them. Really enjoyed watching your video.
Just wonderful Becky! Your mushrooms cheered me up on a cold day. I love the supracolours - even more than the Museum Aquarelles perhaps. Better colour range I think - maybe a bit softer and more versatile. It’ll be interesting to hear what you think! Thanks again for a great video
Thank you, I'm glad it cheered you up! I love using lots of colours, haha. I am definitely going to look at those Museum Aquarelles soon I think; I want to be reminded of what they're like too!
I think that Aqua Bronze is going to be used frequently in the future; I love it so much! The pencils are also lovely, and worked really well - definitely top tier watercolour pencils!
Thank you for this enthusiastic demo. I ❤ Caran d'Ache (and the Gold Aqua Bronze was dreamy) Yes, Caran d'Ache products are incrwdible quality -and priced accordingly. I'd rather save (or wait for a good sale) to enjoy good quality art supplies -instead of buying budget/cheap versions from unknown brands, who don't offer any info about themselves, their process or their products. Less stuff but more quality has been my motto lately. Thanks again, Becky, i look forward to see if you have used these again in other videos
Thank you! And that's a very good motto to have. Pay once for high quality products, not many times for lower quality and THEN higher quality once the others prove themselves useless, lol.
@@BeckyTregear You are right. I live in 🇩🇪. There are a couple of sayings along what you say: "I am too poor to buy crappy stuff" or "If you buy cheap, you buy twice". I am not sure if there are sayings like these in English.
What fun:) Would like to know how they compare with the FC Albrecht Durer pencils. I was saving my fly buys points for those and now they have taken them off, doh! Crossing my fingers they bring them back🤞
I agree on using a brush which holds more water. I find that it works better when you sharpen the pencils first. Finally, I think the real star of the vid is the gold paint. I'm putting that straight into my cart. Lol.
I'm a shocker for not sharpening pencils even though I know they work better when they are pointy! 🤣 That gold is a stunner, and now I must use it in all of my artworks, lol.
I like these pencils a lot, and yes....they have some gorgeous stuff! I'm hoping to have a video about the Museum Aquarelles out soon - October sometime!
You might want to check out Studio 56 for Creatives interview with Pat Southern Pearce. Interview heading, "Glorious Toned Paper interview with Pat Southern Pearce". Pat uses her watercolor pencils dry. She likes the ones you bought. Always enjoy your videos.
I've always loved Caran d' Ache pencils. I feel you with those pencils that seems to have been placed oddly, I would rearrange them if I were lucky enough to own this set, just have two smaller sets one of them ancient, but still performing well.
I will probably cave in and rearrange the pencils - I should have done it in the video but I was too impatient to swatch the colours, so I left them as is. Those two deep red colours are just so out of place though...aaaahhh!! 😱
Thanks for using them the way you did. Some people scribble them on a surface, then wet them and apply them. I always thought that was a counter productive method. I thought if I were to do that I might as well use my pan watercolors instead. It would make it simpler and save time. If I’m going to use pencils I am going to use as I would use a pencil. Just my thoughts. You did a very nice job. The gold was the perfect touch.
Fun painting Becky! The metalic looked like mercury in the dish. I just love some sparkle to play with. Would love to see comparisons with the museum pencils.
I imagine the silver version would look just like mercury! It was amazed at how beautiful the powder is when it comes into contact with water. Pure alchemy! ❤ I definitely need to get the Museums out now.
Getting them cheaper thanks to a new tin is awesome. That gold paint is beautiful and I like your art piece. I saw some cute mushroom art just yesterday and thought it would be fun to draw. I can never think what to draw.
It was an unexpected bargain at Officeworks Mentone! Coming up with ideas for artworks is usually the most difficult part, unless it is a picture which has inspired the whole video. This one I had to think of something after swatching the colours, lol.
Love your drawing, the colors are stunning. I use the museum aquarel and also love those. The white of the museum aquarel is said to be the best white when you want to use it over dark on pastelmat for example. Good to know these are great too! 👩🏼🎨🫶
Some of it is my studio lighting bleaching them out, and they also get stronger with more layers on top, as adding water does wash them out a bit. But maybe they're not as intense as other pencils - I'll do some comparisons down the line!
They are really great pencils; I often reach for this tin when I'm doing little artworks that call for watercolour pencils. I know some places sell them individually as open stock so maybe you can pick a few colours to make a little set? They're so incredibly expensive to buy as a full set - I got lucky in that this set was on mega clearance sale and was nearly 60% off RRP!
Congrats on your Caran d'ache bargain Becky! I love the colors of your shrooms, they're rich and vibrant looking. That gold looks freaking amazing too.
Great review and artwork! The mushrooms really came together after a few layers. That seems to be the trick with watercolor pencils-otherwise, the result is patchy. I love the color range and all the greens like you said rather than yellows. Those do seem like three unnecessarily close ochres though😅 I don’t have the Supracolors, but i have been tempted by them👀 I already have the museum aquarelles though, and I do like those. But I’ve wanted to try the supracolors too, maybe someday!
Thank you! I need to get the Museum Aquarelles out as it has been ages since I've used them, and I'm curious to know if they perform better than the Supracolors - hopefully I'll get all those comparison videos out this year, lol!
Who doesn't love a shroom or 4 :D lovely artwork and fantastic review, Caran d'Ache watercolour pencils have been on my amazon wish list since I started drawing in 2019 and every birthday and xmas I link the list to my family, not got them yet lol don't think I'll ever get them, maybe if I win the lotto :D great video! Thank you! :D
I saw the price of the full set.....eeeeeek! But I am happy to report that the pencils are great quality, so at least they justify the price, haha! Hopefully you'll get some soon! 😊
Thank you so much, and i absolutely love how the picture turned out! Looks stunning and so vibrant! May i ask, do they layer and draw really nicely as dry pencils too? I think the pablos layer pretty well and are quite firm ( i only have about 10 atm)... wondering if could save and get just the spurs or perhaps both (in my dreams lol) would be best if they feel quite different and would have different uses! Seems a shame to use these dry but getting both the spurs and pablos is so much.... I have a feeling both would be ideal tho! lol
I haven't used the Pablos, but in my experience dry pencils do seem to layer differently to watercolour ones - it's like the texture of the pencil is different when laying them down on paper and dry ones feel smoother to use. I mean, I am sure the Supras could be used dry....I just have to always wet things which are aquarelle - I can't help myself! 😂
I paid $125 for the pencil set but they're usually somewhere in the $200-$300 range, depending on where one buys them. I had to snap up the deal when I saw them! 🤣 I popped some links in the description so you can see the details for the Aqua Bronze...I bought mine locally at The Art Shop but I think Amazon is slightly cheaper at the moment. Jackson's Art stocks them too - they seem fairly easy to find, which is great! 🙂
I love how this artwork turned out! And l was amazed how bright that yellow was, even after only one layer. Good tip with the brush change. I have to try that. Do you have the Faber Castell Albrecht Duerer as well? (Can't remember) I would love to see a comparison with these ones, the Museum Aquarelle and the Albrecht Duerer. I probably don't need the Supracolor but they look so beautiful. May I ask how much you paid? The 80 set is currently on sale for a bit over AUD 200 on cultpens.
Thank you! Yes, I have the wooden box of FC and am trying to work up the courage to use them, lol. And the Museums....I have a lot of videos to make! 😂 I think the set was around $125? Being Officeworks they'll be more expensive than Cult Pens when on at full price and it's only due to being "half price" that they were reasonable.
@@BeckyTregear oh wow, what an amazing price. I looked everywhere and cultpens were the cheapest but having a lot of the Albrecht Duerer and all of the Museum Aquarelle I am telling myself that I don't need these ones. But there is this little voice in my head, lol...
I honestly have some issues with the colours of that palette and it's one of the reasons I wouldn't buy it even knowing those pencils are great... There's a few colours too similar... I love using colour pencils and the streakiness is tricky but I tend to use layers and it helps, the last one is always a pencil one so it adds character...
That's fair enough! I imagine the 120 set is a lot more padded out with extra colours, hence why I like to go for the biggest set, haha! But half price for these was too good to resist. 😂
I think a comparison between FC Poly's and Pablo's and FC Albrect Dürer's and these Supracolor could be a good video to do as they're all "artist quality" and all use blue wool scale, but the Poly's are oil and the rest are wax.
Lovely video and painting Becky a couple of questions please. Are they soft pencils to use. Could you use them dry with a good effect on ordinary paper. Are they wax pencils thankyou
Thanks for your questions! Yes, these Supracolors are nice soft pencils. I guess they could be used dry, but honestly I pretty much only use Aquarelles when I'm intending to add water to them. I think maybe if you want to have pencils for solely dry purposes, maybe the Pablo range would be a better fit? I think these are the Supracolor equivalents, as they come in the same tin. Top of Caran d'Ache's pencil line are the Museum Aquarelles and Luminance pencils. I am not sure of Supracolors are wax or oil; I couldn't find that information with a quick search on their page. I'm pretty sure Pablo are oil based though? And Luminance are wax.
Great Mushrooms Becky. I just watched your CD Museum Aquarelle's review and I think these colours are not as vibrant as Museum's, but again, it could be the lighting/monitor's fault. I have a question regarding this gold powder you have used here, which I love. Do you need to use it all in one go or can it be reactivated later once it dries? 💜💙💚💛🧡
The Museums are more saturated I think, but the Supracolors do a very nice job as well so I like them too. 😊 The gold will reactivate in water - I mixed up some on the plate, then left it for ages and it dried; by wetting it again and mixing, it came back to life. ❤
They can! But I've really only used them with water, or to layer over the top of watercolour, so if anyone else some feedback that would be great to hear from you!
I'm pretty sure it was Fabriano Artistico Hot Press in Bright White. 100% cotton 300gsm. That's what I generally use with watercolour pencils if not putting them in a sketchbook. 🙂
I haven't used FC AD pencils for a while, but I do have the wooden box set on my desk awaiting review - I'm trying to muster up the courage to use the pencils and break the symmetry of the box, lol! But those are great from what I remember!
Hi girl. A little help here please. Everything I buy I HAVE TO BUY ONLINE, cause there's not even one decent art supply store in my island. So, I have been watching some of your videos to help me decide what to buy.... but colors are tricky on screen.... sooooo that been said, IF you have the Neocolor II (which are also from Caran D'ache) could you tell me if the color Aubergine on this pencils the same as in the Neocolor II? I would love to have that color in pencil form! Thanks if u can help me... if not, well thanks anyway! 😅
They're pretty close! The pencil looks more like the dry version of Neocolor II. When it is wet, it goes a little more purple, and the pencil has a slightly more reddish tone. So hard to judge with the naked eye, but that's what I'm seeing if it helps!
I wouldn't dare to use any 1 star rating on my favorite artwork, that's ridiculous. I'd rather look for an alternative color. It is best to use those kinds of pencils for warm up.
Fair enough! I keep my originals in folder books, so they don't really see the light of day much anyway. If it's something I intend to frame, then I'd be steering clear of the one stars.
The biggest problem with the cheaper *cough* Caran D'Ache pencils is the barrel thickness, they are too thin imo. I assume these are the same size as the Pablo's.
Yes, they are slimmer than Museum Aquarelle, which are a much chunckier pencil. I haven't used Pablo's but I think those are the same or similar size. Normally I don't much like skinny pencils either but I actually enjoyed the Supracolors more than expected, yay!
so great and inspirational, thanks

I was thinking of getting these the 120 set as I dont like dewent and I think I wont like the inktence thanks for sharing xxxxxx
That circle just reminds me of the moon. Moon mushrooms, anyone? 😂
I like it! Definitely the moon. 😉
I think a comparison between FC Poly's and Pablo's and FC Albrect Dürer's and these Supracolor could be a good video to do as they're all "artist quality" and all use blue wool scale, but the Poly's are oil and the rest are wax.
I definitely want to compare pencils with each other. Supracolor vs Albrect Durer would be a good one!
@@BeckyTregear As you have all 4, I meant do all 4 in one go, Polychromos/Pablo and Albrecht/Supra.
@@BeckyTregear Thank you so much, Becky.
Unfortunately, I saw that when you dilute Schmincke Aqua Bronze with just water, you can wipe the pigment off the paper ☹️ you need to use a binder ☹️
Someone else said there is binder already in it? I have still yet to figure it out! Seems to be working ok so far, but time will tell. 🙂
i really want to try those, but def not in the budget lol
very colourful toadstools, nd the gold is an nice touch 😀
Thank you! 😊 Only just in my budget because they were half price, lol.
Can you compare with museum aquarelle?
I definitely plan to do this!
Amazing!❤
Can these also be used as regular pencils? Has anyone actually colored dry with them, if so were you satisfied with the result?
They can! But I've really only used them with water, or to layer over the top of watercolour, so if anyone else some feedback that would be great to hear from you!
What paper did you use for swatching. Just curious. I’m seeing a lot of variance in how things dissolve with various brushes and paper.
I'm pretty sure it was Fabriano Artistico Hot Press in Bright White. 100% cotton 300gsm. That's what I generally use with watercolour pencils if not putting them in a sketchbook. 🙂
What do you think of them next the the faber castell A/D watercolour pencils?
I haven't used FC AD pencils for a while, but I do have the wooden box set on my desk awaiting review - I'm trying to muster up the courage to use the pencils and break the symmetry of the box, lol! But those are great from what I remember!
Love it
@@BeckyTregear THANK U SOOOO MUCH!!! That explanation does help! Your're the best! 🥰
If Supracolor is already an artist grade, then Museum Aquarelle is for higher Elo artists.

Gold prospector in a former life 😂
Yee-hah! GOLD!!!
@@BeckyTregear 😂😂
The biggest problem with the cheaper *cough* Caran D'Ache pencils is the barrel thickness, they are too thin imo. I assume these are the same size as the Pablo's.
Yes, they are slimmer than Museum Aquarelle, which are a much chunckier pencil. I haven't used Pablo's but I think those are the same or similar size. Normally I don't much like skinny pencils either but I actually enjoyed the Supracolors more than expected, yay!
@@BeckyTregear Oh, I thought you had the Pablo's too. Ok. Ignore my other message :)
