I'm 93 and I have had this same type of flattop since I was 15. The best one I had was a former barber at the Marine Base Camp Pendelton in California next to San Clemente, CA. He worked there for many years. He retired from Camp P job and opened his own place in San Clemente. He could cut a perfect flattop in 3 1/2 minutes. He always had a lot of Marines getting flattops in his shop.
I'm the only one in my Barber shop that can do a flat top.....it's nice to pick new techniques from skilled barbers like you here on youtube! I've been a barber for over 12 years and I'm still learning new things. Keep up the good work!
There is definitely an art to the flat top. I do enjoy your videos that just teach class is barbering. I have had the pleasure of working in the shop with my father for the past 20 years. He just recently had his 50th barber anniversary and he can cut a mean flat top.
Excellent video! My husband likes to have his hair cut every 2 weeks and resources for professionals who execute a great flat top are few and far between, I have cut my daddy's hair in the past, but have never done a flat top. Your video (which I will watch many times) will be very helpful!
Hello Bob!! As a fellow barber of 20+ years I tip my hat to you sir!!! I do a lot of flattops at my shop and I thought I gave a great one until I saw yours!!! Very nice work my friend!!! Nothing but admiration for you!!!👍👍💈💈
I have only 4 years in this beautiful art, and I hope one day I can be as good as you Sir. This video helped me more than you can imagine. Thanks for sharing your talent! :)
I watched 4 videos and yours was by far the best from a barber who hasn't cut since the late 70's. It was fast, efficient and by far the most perfect I have seen. You are a master with few out there left. Thank you.
Bob taught me how to cut a flat-top back in 1997! Hey Bob, glad to see you're still clippin' along! I still use your techniques today! Except I'm no longer in the frozen North. I bought "Downtown Naples Barber Shop" in Naples, FL. Be well and say hi to your wife and Kristin! And remember... "BLOW UP YOUR TV"!!
+Matt Shuey Hi Matt, I enjoyed working with you and passing along my "tricks". If I ever get down to your neck of the woods, I'll for sure look you up. I didn't blow up my TV, but I'm very good at avoiding commercials which is the next best thing. Bob
Hi Bob, Just ran across your video. Outstanding flattop! Ive worn a flattop for about 20 years and the lady who currently cuts my hair does it nearly the same as you 000 on the sides but she free hands a 00000 down the middle. A very short flattop with the tapered corners as you demonstrate. It will last about 2 1/2 weeks. Tried other barbers early on but with little success. Its nice to see someone else out there with a steady hand and a perfectionist attitude. Great job sir.
I have been getting this type flat top for 30 years. This is the best ever " Real " Flat Top. Some barbers like to give a Hi-Top. I dont like those. I like it tight with a runway on top. Now it more like a horse shoe since I balding. Regards from Ody Slim
I wish you were here where I live! I can't find anybody that cuts a flattop like you do. I really like the way you cut this man's hair. This is how I want to get a flattop and can't get anybody to cut it this way.
Find a barber who is willing to learn how to cut an excellent flattop--the learning would happen by purchasing my video on the subject (a small investment that would pay for itself hundreds of times over). The video can be bought at my website: www.howtocuthair.com
I wish I had picture of this haircut so I could go where I go. I wish I could lived there where you were to cut it. I love the looks of this haircut you did for this customer.
Oh Bob, that' exactly the flat-top I've tried to get the last four barbers to do for me !! But, they all ended up cutting it "military flat-top" style...and on me it looked like " a narrow brick sitting on top of a bowling ball." I just could not make them understand about blending and rounding the corners like you just did . Thanks for this video. I'll keep looking for the right barber. But I'm about ready to give up my flat-top.... because I can't find anyone to do it like you do ! The customer in your chair is very lucky....when it comes to A GOOD FLAT-TOP ...NO, A GREAT FLAT-TOP !!
Thanks! I've been a barber for a month and have been trying to get this haircut down after never seeing it in barber school lol. A lot of people say they want it shorter up front when I show them the finished product because I line the front up with the crown, so where the crown might be an eighth inch the bangs might be a quarter or so inch, but it is flat. When I fix it and shorten the bangs , the flattop slopes down from a profile view and that messes me up mentally because I conceptualize a flattop as flat from head on, the side, the back and any angle probably because of the nomenclature. This video was a great help and I hope me expressing my difficulties can help other barbers in the same boat work through some stuff. Thank you again, wonderful tutorial.
Thanks for your kind words. Learning haircutting from this format has limitations to keep in mind. The popularity of haircutting postings on RUclips is largely due to no cost, but cost shouldn’t be your primary consideration. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting down RUclips-it gave me much needed help on several projects, but haircutting is a subject that doesn’t work so good in the RUclips format, Here are some of the problem areas: 1) Many of those postings don’t teach much at all, instead they’re just a good show, but without needed explanations. 2) Successful barbers have important skills besides haircutting, such as knowing about the various hair factors that determine what kind of haircuts can (and can’t) be given, and the questions you need to ask so people get what they want. 3) Learning how to cut hair from different experts is a sure path to confusion. Different ways of cutting may be good to learn if you’re experienced, but it’s just too much for most beginners. The different haircuts I’ve posted on RUclips gives a good picture of how I teach the subject. If you like my way of showing and explaining, you should get your hands on my DVDs and book because I won’t do any more posting on RUclips. I still have a large inventory of how-to that shows how to give always-popular barber shop haircuts. They are affordably priced and are absolutely guaranteed to make you HAPPY with your purchase. Check out my website, www.traditionalhaircutting.com ,and while you’re at it, see what my customers have to say in the testimonial section and check out Bob’s Tips-good stuff there.
daniel ainsworth Receded hairlines are not a problem, even top hair that's thinned out can get a good flattop. All that's needed is hair that grows up and out from the scalp--lay down hair and extra fine hair are the only hair-types that should consider other kinds of haircuts
Nice haircut :) I only wish I learned how to cut flat tops using clippers.. For me it's clippers back and sides and free hand scissor work only on the top. guess it's never to late to learn.
Been a barber myself for almost 50 years with the exception of a brief stint in the Marines its the only job i have ever had. Funny thing is that in the Marines i wore a horseshoe flattop with white walls that i cut myself
That's a great looking landing strip but I wondered if you ever gave a military horseshoe flattop? If so do you shave the sides and top with a razor? Thank you for you time.
I haven't cut a horseshoe flattop but if I had I would leave lots of skin a.k.a. straight razor up the sides and back and take the straight razor over the landing strip just like me barber did for me in the photos. Are you capable and such a strange yet beautiful horseshoe? If of when do want to show me your skill sets? Provide me with a volunteer and I will replicate my haircut. robertsoldier@me.com
+Ligia Escaleras Thank you for your reply, but I regret to say I can't speak Spanish. I spend winter in Arizona where it would be a real plus to know the language--I will make the effort.
I wet his hair with a spray bottle and add a small amount of Crew Comb, a water soluble product similar to butch wax, but better. He does have good hair for a flattop.
the modern school of hairdressing doesn't teach this classic technique of cutting hair unfortunately and that;s why it's really a privilege to see the traditional way of cutting hair .
Check out my website, www.traditionalhaircutting.com. It's all about classic haircuts, the ones that have kept their popularity because they make possible wash-and-wear haircare.
Through the years flattops have been a haircut for men an boys, but in the last decade or two ladies are getting them too. The only difference is ladies, with some exceptions, like them on the longer side--a half-inch on the sides with the top cut to an inch or more. The longer flattops need coarse, straight hair, but again, there are some exceptions.

Except that the corners should not be rounded, they should be square. I like other places very much. I especially like your downward-sloping flat top, like a trapezoid, which makes people see the step surface. This is the essence of why the flat top has a masculine look
Thanks a lot for your kind words. My DVD “Precision Scissor Cuts” is a two-hour video showing most all scissor haircuts, from short to the long. I believe it will meet your needs. The popularity of haircutting postings on RUclips is largely due to the zero cost, but cost shouldn’t be the only consideration. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting down RUclips-it gave me much needed help on several projects, but haircutting is a subject that doesn’t work well , Here are some problem areas: 1) Many of those postings don’t teach much at all, instead they are just a good show without needed explanations. 2) Successful barbers have important skills besides cutting skills-success depends on different things that can’t get covered on RUclips. 3) Learning how to cut hair from a number of experts is a sure way to get confused when your customer is in the chair trying to explain what they want-that’s no time to try to recall who showed what, when and how. The different haircuts I’ve posted on RUclips gives a good picture of how I teach the subject. If you like my way of showing and explaining, you should get your hands on my DVDs and book because I won’t do any more posting on RUclips. I still have a garage-full of how-to that shows how to give always popular barber shop haircuts-they are affordably priced and are absolutely guaranteed to make you HAPPY with your purchase. Check out my website, www.traditionalhaircutting.com ,and while you’re at it, see what my customers have to say in the testimonial section and check out Bob’s Tips-good stuff there.
I am currently in barber school. They don't teach us much. They just through us out there and tell us that's how we will learn. I am very nervous when a client walks into the school for a hair cut. I really don't where to start on a hair cut. Any advice?
The first thing is to ask is "How do you like your hair cut?" Listen carefully, then a close look at their hair will tell you if you'll just be trimming their hair (cutting off the hair that has grown out since their last haircut) or will their haircut wishes have you making a big change from what they've had in the past. This second possibility requires you to analyze their hair as to hair texture (how thick or thin the hair is), hair type (straight or wavy or curly or kinky), and also hair grain problems that may impact what length or overall shaping you will be able to do with your cutting efforts. Sometimes your hair analysis doesn't "fit" with the haircut your customer has in mind, which means you will need to explain the limitations their hair has and how that influences what can be done. Yes, there are times when a barber has to educate their customer as to what can and can't be done. Exactly how the hair qualities impact your hair length and shaping possibilities are questions that can't be covered in this small space--my book and/or my "Precision Clipper Cutting" videos cover this subject in depth. Take the time to get good at this business of "Hair Communication"; it's a crucial aspect of being a successful barber.
+Jim Shorts Hi Jim, I'm absolutely positive that 55 is a great age to take up barbering. Because you can work at the profession part-time, full-time, leave it and come back to it as long as you're physically and mentally able, you'll never be sorry you took up this (truly) enjoyable way to make a living. How long to learn depends on you, but a rough guess is two to three years to get a well-rounded "bag" of skills, but you'll continue to pick up additions to that bag for years. If you're motivated you'll make it through barber school without a problem (they range from six months to a year). When you're into the apprenticeship phase you'll need some patience as your real learning takes place and you're in the process of building up a bunch of happy customers. It doesn't take long to understand why barbers rank near the top of job satisfaction studies.

I had a flattop fo 20 years and I know a good flattop barber when I see one and sir you cut a great flattop Well done. M
Many thanks.
you're awesome man, us young barbers appreciate these cuts, I'm going to order your dvds so I can get these cuts I don't do often down packed, thanks
Nothing makes me happier than sharing my knowledge with beginners.
Never doubt a barber with 50+ years experience!

I have only 4 years in this beautiful art, and I hope one day I can be as good as you Sir. This video helped me more than you can imagine. Thanks for sharing your talent! :)
Thank you. I'm glad I cut add to your skills.
Perfect shaped head, hair color for this tribute to the barber who perfectly cut it. Masculine, statement with elements of being a good man.
Hey Petr, do you think this flattop style would suit me? thanks!
I watched 4 videos and yours was by far the best from a barber who hasn't cut since the late 70's. It was fast, efficient and by far the most perfect I have seen. You are a master with few out there left. Thank you.
Your dvds have been a lifesaver for me. I didn't learn much in barber school and I worked at a shop that had barbers who didn't want to help.
Thanks Mike. That my how-to had that kind of impact for you is worth more than any income the videos may have given me.
Mike Hopper Thanks Mike. I'm glad I could give you what you needed.
Thanks Mike. I'm very glad I could help you.

we love to see classic hairdressers like you ! You are among the goldens ! thank you and im glad I found a hairdresser like you !
He is a barber not a hairdresser.
He's a BARBER 🙄
Pffft hairdresser wth
Great haircut, shame most barbers today don't know how to cut a flattop.
It's a shame, but there's help: the video I sell is almost two-hours teaches/shows how.it's done.
They don’t really teach us in school lol I had to learn on the job
Pensam que sabem. Como eu também pensava, até ver esse vídeo. They think they know. How I tought too, until I see this video.
Thanks Greg, I'm glad you liked it. Anyone who gets my Precision Clipper Cutting #3 will know how to do it.
The best flattop on RUclips .no rounded crown , excellent !!!!
I love those seniors. Also I lost your dvd. I had the book and dvd. It helped me with the long hair. I wish I still had it
Hi Bob,

Superb! This barber is a MASTER
Thanks for your kind words!
Bob shows how to give and extra short FLATTOP--haircutting is fun when you know how!
Bob Ohnstad hi bob. Ur haircuts r amazing.
I'm gonna get on the program as well
I have been getting this type flat top for 30 years. This is the best ever " Real " Flat Top. Some barbers
like to give a Hi-Top. I dont like those. I like it tight with a runway on top. Now it more like a horse shoe
since I balding. Regards from Ody Slim
Gotta respect ur elders. They give out good ol fashion haircuts. This is a very nice haircut.
Awesome! I work in a barbershop now and I have to learn how to do this, great video
Go to my website, www.howtocuthair.com and check out my video on cutting flattops and crewcuts--it shows/teaches the subject
I wish you were here where I live! I can't find anybody that cuts a flattop like you do. I really like the way you cut this man's hair. This is how I want to get a flattop and can't get anybody to cut it this way.

Bob Ohnstad I even like the rounded corners.
***** Rounding the corners is a big help in keeping that hair from lying down.
I wish I had picture of this haircut so I could go where I go. I wish I could lived there where you were to cut it. I love the looks of this haircut you did for this customer.
What # clipper did you use on the sides?
Hermoso corte
Fantastic flattop. Love how short it is. Perfectly flat by a real master barber.
Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you liked it and it was able to teach you a thing or two.
Great flat top. I love learning from veteran barbers. I tried to check out your DVDs on your website but it wasn't up.
Give it another try--I have two web addresses, both with the same info: howtocuthair.com and
traditionalhaircutting.com Thanks for your heads-up.
If you can find a willing barber, have he/she watch this video. If they don't use a computer, bring yours with you when it's time for a haircut.
Thanks a lot--I'm glad you found it helpful.
It's amazing how many barber can't give a good flattop!
+Adam Winklemam Agreed. I live in an area where all the barbers think a flat top is the same as a buzz cut. Unreal.
A Wink here where I'm from barbers don't know how to do a flat top.
I want to say this is a very clean flat top very impress thanks for the tip barber ken
mackenzie lao My pleasure!
Best flattop on RUclips
Thanks a lot for your kind words!
Very nice, well executed
Great old style barber basics. Perfect flattop
Thanks Laura--I'm glad you liked it.
Hey man i just really think its cool that your still perusing your dream evan at an old age
The pleasure I get from giving different kinds of "wash-and-wear" haircuts keeps me young!
I really like the overall look of this cut with the rounded corners.
Thank you. Those rounded corners are what will keep it in good shape for over a month.
I wish I lived close by and have you give me a flattop like you gave this guy. That's exactly how I would want it. It looks really nice!
Thanks for your kind words. Learning haircutting from this format has limitations to keep in mind.

Amazing video
Many thanks!
Your mannn!! best flattop on RUclips
***** Thanks so much--I appreciate your kind words
I hope it showed you some worthwhile tips.
You are excellent Bob! Thank you!
Thank you!
Your a legend sir
man that looks sharp, do you think i can get a cut like with a receding hair line?
daniel ainsworth Receded hairlines are not a problem, even top hair that's thinned out can get a good flattop. All that's needed is hair that grows up and out from the scalp--lay down hair and extra fine hair are the only hair-types that should consider other kinds of haircuts

Nice haircut :)
I only wish I learned how to cut flat tops using clippers.. For me it's clippers back and sides and free hand scissor work only on the top. guess it's never to late to learn.

Nice sir . You are legend
THANKS, SR. BEAUTIFUL WORK
Thank you.
Been a barber myself for almost 50 years with the exception of a brief stint in the Marines its the only job i have ever had. Funny thing is that in the Marines i wore a horseshoe flattop with white walls that i cut myself
Nice tutorial Bob! Do you think this flattop would suit me?
When you send a comment it's accompanied by the tiniest photo--too tiny to see your hair. Email me a couple of photos: Bob@howtocuthair.com
Hey Bob, OK will do thanks! Also have my own channel where I've got tonnes of barbershop videos where you get some good views of my hair, thanks!
very smart cut
Smart too because it's a wash-and-wear haircut that keeps a good shape for a month to six weeks.
Mil respetos gran señor saludos desde MEXICO
That's a great looking landing strip but I wondered if you ever gave a military horseshoe flattop? If so do you shave the sides and top with a razor?
Thank you for you time.
I've never given the "horseshoe flattop", but "never" is a long time so maybe...

Exelente trabajo
Help! I think I know what "exelente" means, but I don't know what "trabajo" means.
Great video sir. 👍
Thanks for your feedback!
amazing , and i have a question ,do you put gel ore someting in hiss hair ?
I wet his hair with a spray bottle and add a small amount of Crew Comb, a water soluble product similar to butch wax, but better. He does have good hair for a flattop.

IAM A MEXICAN HAIRSTYLEST, BUT NEVE I SEE YOUR TECHNIC, HUGHES FROM GUADALAJARA!
Thanks--I'm glad the video taught you a trick or two.
Bob, did you do a video on how to cut a ladies flat top cut? Have you cut many ladies flat tops? Thanks you do amazing work!
Through the years flattops have been a haircut for men an boys, but in the last decade or two ladies are getting them too. The longer flattops need coarse, straight hair, but again, there are some exceptions.
Bob Ohnstad Do you still actively work as a barber? Will you be posting any new video's.
I work one day a week at my former shop, now owned by my daughter. It's still very enjoyable. I will be posting more videos.
Yes, I've cut a ladies flattop, but not many. Thanks for your compliment.
Awesome
I love it ! Thank you sir 😘❤️

Bob
A flat topping beast!
Craig Orr I love to do them. They are a challenging haircut, but if they were all easy it would get kinda boring.
Artist!
Thank you (I've always viewed haircutting as being quite similar to sculpture and flattop/crewcut cutting even more so).
amazing work. a master
Thanks a lot!
Bob Ohnstad your The Best at cutting hair
I'm glad you think so, but I know some barbers who are better.
Beautiful work

Gracias to you--I'm glad you liked it.
I need more help with shears if you have a DVD on that, get back to me, thanks Bob
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting down RUclips-it gave me much needed help on several projects, but haircutting is a subject that doesn’t work well , Here are some problem areas:
1) Many of those postings don’t teach much at all, instead they are just a good show without needed explanations.
I sell a two-hour DVD on shear-cut haircuts, it covers shear-cuts of all kinds See my website, www.how-tocuthair. com.
Go to my website, traditionalhaircutting.com and then to "Bob's Tips" for "Advice for a common problem". That's what you need.
I worked for a great master of barbering Jim noe flat rock minthats the best next to his I’ve ever saw🤩
Very nice! Do you think 55 years old is too old to become a good Barber? How long to learn? Thanks.
+Jim Shorts
Hi Jim,
I'm absolutely positive that 55 is a great age to take up barbering.
Bob, Thanks so much for the feedback!
