Hi! I'm in the process of editing Deicide and a Metal Unboxing right now. Just haven't had time to finish them yet, so those should be out early next week!
What do we think of Baby Metal? Overrated or Underrated?
    Love you! ❤❤

      not overrated, for sure.
But to be able to form your opinion, please listen to some other songs like Road of resistance live, Akatsuki live, Rondo of Nightmare (with intro by Mischiefs of God), BxMxC, Megitsune. Enjoy!

Not underrated or overrated. They get plenty of acclaim and rightly so. This song is not really typical and is also from when they were much younger than they are now. As they've got older (mid-20s) the music style has matured although they do still play some older hits at their shows.

    • @10Shun

Neither. All I can say is that Babymetal is legit heavy metal. But they are not what Westerners often think of as a traditional band. They are more like heavy metal theater production. And they may go down as the only heavy metal act to perfect this kind of mashing up of idol vocals and choreography with the heaviest and most technical metal genres we can conceive. What Babymetal has accomplished is truly immense and historic.

You haven't seen Babymetal until you have seen their lead singer, Su-metal. Due to the high energy set they do, they have moments where Su has a break, and Yui and Moa dance. This is one of a few songs without Su. This is not their normal sound. Check out the video Mirror Mirror to see what they sound like today

If you want to get technical about it, this is actually Black Babymetal. The performers are Yui-Metal and Moa-Metal who are the backup singers/dancers. Black Babymetal had 4 songs that they would perform while Su-Metal, the primary vocalist, took a break during the concert. This being your first Babymetal review, you've missed the main reason most people listen to Babymetal... Su-Metal.

Good first reaction, but an unusual first song to hear from them - not a bad one, just unusual since it is one of only 4 songs that does not feature the lead vocalist Su-metal ... and unlike all those JPop and KPop groups you may be familiar with where they were formed following some sort of format with a pre-identified audience, BABYMETAL was the passion project of one Metalhead producer, Kei Kobayashi, who saw the potential of that lead vocalist to front a band doing a fusion of the sort of music and Metal that he liked, but with the JPop aesthetics and choreographed dance that might attract a new and younger audience that might have never heard or been exposed to metal at all.
The JPop and KPop groups with their formulas will have auditioned for people who maybe looked right or sounded right or moved the right way. Do not believe the gatekeepers and elitists who never give BABYMETAL a chance because they think they were formed that way. They are wrong.
BABYMETAL was formed around the vocal talents and stage presence of the lead vocalist and Kobayashi thought that adding her two young, but also very talented, young friends to provide the dance element along with backing vocals would add something different that had not been done in metal before.
BABYMETAL's choreo is not like the choreographed dancing you will have seen with other acts and pop groups etc. They are not there just to fill the stage or to give you something to watch to take your mind off bland music. Their choreo is bespoke for each song, it serves a real purpose of helping to interpret the meaning of the song or a lyric (helpful for those of us who speak no Japanese), but even more importantly it is designed to involve the audience, to get everybody joining in and becoming part of the performance - they give cues to and lead the crowd letting them know when to jump, pump their fists, chant or shout or sing along etc.
I never had any interest in dance, I still don't - it all seems pointless and if anything it just annoys me and I never wanted it when I was watching my old favourite metal and rock bands ... but BABYMETAL's choreo is just different somehow. Now when I watch my old favourite bands all doing the same things as each other, there is that element that is just missing. I never expected that to happen.
This was a compilation video with clips from the Tokyo Dome in 2016 (they sold it out 2 nights running, 55,000 people each night), that was the huge stage with the fire and moving platforms and from I think their Fox Festival concerts in more modest, but still substantial and sold out, venues in 2017.
BABYMETAL have about 60 songs, each one different to the last. They have songs in virtually every metal genre (thrash, djent, power/speed, Prog, folk, Nu-metal, death, black etc ... you name it they've probably done it), but they will mix and blend in so many other musical styles and genres with the metal.
Some songs are good hard metal, some lean towards their pop roots and they do everything in between ... so yes there may be songs you won't like for whatever reason, but that isn't a problem. If you don't like a song just be honest and say why not and maybe say what you do like so we can point you towards a song that may appeal more to you.
Jake Muller has already made some good suggestions for what to try next ... you have about 13 years of BABYMETAL to catch up on and you may regret avoiding them for so long once you get what they are about ... they are definitely one of the very best live bands on the planet right now - their headline shows are amazing. I saw some of the recognised great live bands of all time in their prime, a couple of the BABYMETAL concerts I went to were more entertaining than those all time greats.

Welcome to the Foxhole and BabyMetal journey.🦊🤘🔥
Another unusual song to meet BabyMetal, this one is considered one of the heaviest track but this belongs to a subgroup called Black Babymetal, they got only 4 songs just like SuMetal the lead singer got 4 solo songs.
In March they released a new concept album called "The Other One", they've been on tour since April joining with Sabaton's Europe Tour and later with the Asian and Australian Tour, right they're taking a break but more shows are coming next month, including festivals in Japan and the US such Summer Sonic, Rising Sun Rock, Aftershock, Louder Than Life and Blue Ridge along with the Babyklok Tour joining with Dethklok in the US Tour, they will come back to Europe for another headlining shows in November, so don't miss the chance to see them live if you got the chance.
BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "baby-metal".
    They are:
    *SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 25.
*MoaMetal* scream and dance, now 24.
*YuiMetal* scream and dance, former member since 2018.
*MomoMetal* scream and dance, she's 20 and is the new official member since April 1st recently.
    None of them are related.
After 2018 you'll see backup dancers performing along with them but none of them are official members, they don't sing, only dance, but that status change recently like i said.
Black Babymetal is making very clear with the message that we better not mess up with them.
I mean they even started this song with a quote from the book of Revelations, is that a blasphemy? Idk i just know I don't want to mess up with the girls with this level of anger.
They're kinda talking rude while still being kawaii and playing behind one of the heaviest BM song.
MikikoMetal, is the choreographer behind this group and she's behind another famous J-pop group called Perfume, and several other projects including the disbanded Sakura Gakuin group where all of them comes from, nice you noticed this being a different type of dance choreo.
This is a live compilation with footages from live at Tokyo Dome 2016 (that was the only time they performed in this gig) and Five Fox Festival 2017.
Black Babymetal songs after 2018 were performed as a solo by MoaMetal, but this is the only song without a MoaMetal solo version, we would love to see MomoMetal performing BBM songs but Only The Fox God Knows (OTFGK).
My suggestions to meet the full group with the power of SuMetal vocals are:
    - Headbanger!! live at Legend 1997, Gans Tomas got this clip safe to react under Head Bangya title.
    - Road Of Resistance live in Japan official.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this and hope to see you next time 🦊🤘🔥

It is pretty hard to see Babymetal for the first time and not need some time to process what you saw. There is a lot going on. I think you should check another one from their younger days like 'Road of Resistance' or 'Ijime Dame Zettai.' Then go to their more recent stuff where they are older. Maybe 'Mirror Mirror' or 'Metal Kingdom'. Always watch their live performances though. Babymetal needs to be seen live!

Not the easiest introduction to BABYMETAL, lol. This is actually Black Babymetal, which is a kind of sub-band consisting of two of the three girls. They do these so the main singer can get a break.
May I suggest 'Road of Resistance, live in Japan' as a more typical (and epic) track?
The backing band, known as The Kami Band are amazing musicians. two 7 or 8 string guitars, a 6-string bass and one of the best drummers around.

  • @BasicModelling
    @BasicModelling Год назад +9

Odd choice for a first BABYMETAL reaction, considering it is a Black Babymetal song, without the lead singer. You should listen to Karate, preferably the video, not a concert version.. Or better still 'Road of Resistance', Rondo of Nightmare (with the Mischief intro).. there are so many songs, it is hard to chose. Monochrome is another great song, either live or the First Take Piano Version. BABYMETAL is one of those bands that is taking a bit of getting used to, depending what song you chose first. They have been going for well over 10 years now, starting VERY young but are still going strong, having reached their mid-twenties. Because of one of the original members leaving in 2018, they were a duo for a while (with a group of girls taking turns to fill the space of the third member), but since a few months ago they are now back as a trio proper. As for the musicians supporting them, i.e the KAMI BAND, they are among the best guitar, bass and drum players in the world. Depending on where they have the concerts, BABYMETAL is eather supported by the EAST KAMI BAND, or the WEST KAMI BAND, but either band are excellent.. so give them a few more goes. Please.. :) Anyway, others have explained the band far better than I can do, so I'll stop.

Best live performing band I have ever seen, they range from excellent to jaw-dropping epic. The audience is a member of the band start to finish, just nothing like them. Oddly enough I never particularly cared for the set of songs done without Su-Metal (their lead singer) but I had never seen this particular performance and I really enjoyed it, glad you chose this even though I was super worried before it started.
Suggestions to see them live (earlier work)
Babymetal - Road of Resistance - Live in Japan
Final performance of a 90 minute show, representative of what the band is. Su-Metal screams "bring them on" in Japanese towards the end, likely in response to a small persistent group of writers/reviewers who kept publishing hit pieces saying they were a fake band / not really metal.
Babymetal - Akatsuki「紅月 -アカツキ-」| LIVE at Budokan Black Night
Su-Metal solo performance, showcases the band solo talents and Su-Metal solo talent
BabyMetal - Death Legend 1997 Apocalypse Live
I'd suggest setting this aside to get to once you watch a few, it's theater more than lyrical, and it's a bit crazy.

    Rule number one: Don't gatekeep.
Rule number 2: Have an open mind
Rule number 3: Don't think. Feel.
Babymetal is not a band. It is a heavy metal performance group. Babymetal is ONLY the three girls. The backing band, called the Kami band or god band are only hired session musicians. The best of the Japanese industry. The songs are written by ghost writers with cryptic metal names. There is a convoluted lore storyline. Foxes are prevalent in their symbolism. They mix every genre of music you can think of with metal. Everything from Indian, Celtic, Latin, Reggae, Ska, Thrash, Power, Death, Djent, Progressive, even Rap.
Remember... They are NOT a band. They are a Heavy Metal performance group, complete with mysterious lore, choreography, theatrical stages, and merch, merch, merch, and more merch.

Thanks for this reaction. Babymetal fans know Babymetal isn't a usual metal band.
Yes, they were the first to introduce dance to metal. And they started super young, younger than probably even those groups you mentioned.
Babymetal has an unusual origin. Imagine a guy working for a company with bands, doing all kinds of things, producing, tour manager, etc.
Now, imagine Japanese pop groups taking over all the charts and rock/metal/harder electronic music being completely wiped out to be niche genres.
So (I assume the then current band stopped or the contract ended) and the company instead asked him to work in the kids division.
He noticed a talented girl and thinks she is to good for just doing pop, maybe metal would work ? He told his superiors and they were: of course we can't do this, this makes no sense.
He made sure he could stay close to her so he could work with her. A bit over a year later he was allowed to do so without any funding as part of a bigger project.
That's the origin story of Babymetal. When he first saw her perform live, she was 10 or 11 and when Babymetal got started the girls were 11 and 12.

This kind of reactors are what I admire. She is honest in her critique without being dismissive or disrespectful. I do not expect everyone to like every single Babymetal song. I don't and I am a big Babymetal fan. Just like how much I love Iron Maiden, Rammstein or Sepultura, not all their songs will make my play list.
Sis Anger is definitely in my play list of Babymetal songs. Ironically, it does not even feature their powerhouse vocalist Su-metal but just the two "cheerleaders" for the group. So I'm glad you reacted to it first. But it is true that the vocals of the two sidekicks Moa and Yui, were a bit high-pitched - they were teenagers after all - and can be a bit too unusual for many people who only expects growls to come along with the heavy death or black metal music. Plus the cute choregraphy makes people think this is just weird. Which is exactly why I like Babymetal. They are quirky, weird, experimental and adorable all at the same time WHILE singing and dancing (to) legit heavy metal music. There is simply nothing like them. AND this reactor is right, the choreographed performance takes a great deal of talent to pull off. Whether one likes Babymetal or not becomes immaterial. Truth is, these ladies have solid street cred as metal performers. And they have been reaping their accolades for good reason - they are as humble and professional about their success as grizzled old school metal frontsmen. That they are this great at live performances as teenagers is nothing short of mindblowing .

BABYMETAL is about contrasts. They pioneered the "kawaii-metal" genre blending the j-pop idol style with metal instrumentation. For first timers it is still the embodiment of "...and now for something completely different." I get that it's not for everyone, but it does take most people at least three songs to start getting the hype. It's a new genre of metal; it's weird and they know it. Also, they have evolved over the more than 10 years that they've been doing this. They rock hard. You can imagine the kind of stamina they must have to pull of an entire concert of dance metal. Most people have the, "That is about the weirdest thing I've ever seen." reaction for the first time.

Among The ONE (Babymetal's fan-base) there is really no bad song among the 60+ songs/4 studio albums released as they will not release a song until it has been absolutely perfected. One of the songs "Monochrome" off their most recent album was recorded 5 years ago and could have easily gone on their 3rd album. Point is, they have no fillers or throw-aways on their albums.
Seeing how they started when they were 11-12 years old, many fans have gotten to see them grow and mature along with their music. "Sis. Anger" was off of their second album.

I first discovered Babymetal in late 2014 and it's literally been a life-changing experience with all the other music I've discovered through them from so many music groups from Japan I have seen them twice and will be them on September 12th in Philadelphia the appeal of Babymetal it's not one thing there's a lot that goes into Babymetal so they never get boring everything they do is different from what anybody else in the world of music is doing The way they promote themselves or should I see the way Koba promotes them and the things they do leading up to new music or a new album like this past year The new music started with Three or four second long teaser clips for each song it was called the Babymetal Restoration project and every few days they would add to these little clips and they would add three or four seconds of a new song and then build on that until finally all the songs reach 99% and the final 1% to complete all of it was us the fans ever since I first discovered them a 2014 they've had this way of drawing their fans in and making them part of what they are doing 😊 🦊

This is Black Babymetal featuring Yuimetal and Moametal who are the backup singers taking the lead in this one. Su-metal is the lead singer of this band and when you get around to seeing the complete lineup you'll understand why she sings lead. Babymetal has been one of the top metal bands for more than a decade now. Those of us who are fans are waiting in anticipation for their tour of the US which will begin at the end of August . BTW, this song is more or less about shitty boyfriends😂.🦊🤘

Unlike most metal bands. BABYMETAL was never afraid of stepping outside the box. Also how many female fronted bands do you know that have toured with the big names in metal? Some bands they have done support tours with. Metalica, RHCP, Judas Preist. Sabaton, and many others they have done at least four U.S. tours. and will be doing their fifth U.S. tour with DEATHKLOK starting in September 2023.

It’s a pity that you reacted to a compilation video. You are not reacting to BABYMETAL, you are reacting to a highlight reel of BABYMETAL . . . or, in this case, Black BABYMETAL. However, I must admit that I have yet to find an actual concert video of this song, so I call this one "the exception to the rule". But, hey, it's a pretty good song for your first at-bat with BABYMETAL! Keep in mind that BABYMETAL has done what no other metal band has - they make metal music fun! How many metal bands can you headbang to with a shit-eating grin on your face?
Should you consider continuing your journey down the foxhole, I've compiled what I consider to be BABYMETAL's top twenty songs/videos here on RUclips; it contains both live performances and the above mentioned music videos. I sincerely hope that you consider reacting to them all (except "Sis. Anger" - one down, nineteen to go) ruclips.net/p/PLdhz2aj0pt4zPl0BZLevPUR9uHKQA27uj
I recommend that you start at the top of the list and work your way down: it starts with the very first MV they did (2012) and moves forward to 2019. I should mention that I cannot guarantee that reacting to these videos won't be blocked but with some creative editing that shouldn't be a problem.
BABYMETAL recently released their fourth album “The Other One”. I would strongly recommend that you react to their earlier work before delving into this last album: in my opinion, the contrast is striking.
Finally, I suggest that you avoid compilation and fancam videos like the plague: compilation videos are, in my opinion, an insult to both the viewer and the band; the music is certainly overdubbed, and the changes in venue and costumes (sometimes even personnel) can be confusing if not completely annoying, and most (meaning all) fancam videos are just a waste of time.
Enjoy your trip down the foxhole! (You're in for a wild ride!!!)
    KITSUNE UP!!! 🤘🦊🤘

Nice first reaction and welcome to BABYMETAL. A very unusual way to get into them... but an awesome one!
This is actually a Black BABYMETAL song which means that they are (or more properly were) a subunit of BABYMETAL formed by YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL. Their lead singer, SU-METAL was taking a break while these two were performing. She also has her solo songs. She's the leader and the whole thing was formed around her.
"Sis. Anger" has been performed only 11 times and the last one was in 2017 right before Yui stopped performing with BABYMETAL due to health issues and finally left. It's, arguably, their heaviest song instrumentally.
So, more BABYMETAL? Here: "Headbanger" (Live at legend 1997), "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" (Live at Sonisphere 2014), "Road of Resistance" (Live in Japan)...
    Until next time!
    🤘🦊

BABYMETAL's catalogue covers a wide range of Metal subgenres, most of the time fused with other genres outside Metal. So while it's difficult to call a song "typical" BABYMETAL, I still would call this one very atypical. It's the heaviest one by far (maybe along with BABYMETAL DEATH), it's pretty much pure Metal, and it doesn't feature the main singer. For me personally, it ranks rather low among their catalogue (which doesn't say too much, since on a scale from 1 to 10, I'd give their "worst" song something like a 7).
Most of their catalogue is more playful than this, and that's one of the things I love so much about them. It's not just good music, it's incredible musicianship, great vocals, cool stages, intense stage presence, entertaining choreography (which I also never dreamed of liking before I encountered BABYMETAL), great crowd interaction... but there are also less tangible elements like the positive aura. The smiling cute girls and the uplifting messages just put you in a good mood.
I have been a metalhead all my life (I'm almost 50 now), but I have never enjoyed any band as much as BABYMETAL.
You seem like you tend towards the heavier side of Metal, so it would be interesting to see what you think of the less heavy, but more playful songs. My recommendation would be "Headbanger", the version from the "Legend 1997" show is very good.

Babymetal really invented their own subgenre. Basically 'cute metal'.
I didn't recognize the song title for this one, nor do I see it listed. If you want to see how much they have grown and changed, their 2023 album 'The Other One' is full of great bangers. 'Metal Kingdom', 'Mirror Mirror', 'METALIZM', 'Light and Darkness'.
Other bands from Japan you may try include LoveBites, with a mostly Power Metal sound, and the best double guitar solos I've heard anywhere. And also Nemophila, whose sound is a bit harder to pigeonhole. The style seems to range from Joan Jett to Kittie to Electric Callboy.

Great first reaction! 🤘🦊🤘Thank you for giving BABYMETAL a chance!!! BABYMETAL started back in 2010 (the girls were 11-12 years old) and since then have performed with, toured with, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), to name a few of many. They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, etc), US, and Asia. They are the first Japanese band to perform at Wembley arena in the UK. Also, 20+ awards have been given to them. They have 60+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too. They recently released a new album that has a more mature sound and is really heavy. I think you would like it, so I hope you react to some of the new songs.🤘🦊🤘

To me all the metal talent is overseas. This band, I discovered by accident and now it was a happy accident! These young ladies are so talented, so music driven that they have opened for a lot of metal, hard rock bands and they are blown away with them. Not just the singers but the band itself (kami-band) is a force to be recognized with! Su- metal has such a voice it's crazy beautiful as well as the other's.Two song for me are Megesuni ( might have spelled it wrong) and The One are my favorites. Out of all the songs you could've picked, you picked the one without the lead singer!
This is actually Black Babymetal, a sub-unit featuring Yui and Moa, otherwise known as scream and dance!
I'm not into Metal, and I'm not into J-pop. But I love babymetal!
    Recommendations:
    1. Karate - classic rock anthem about overcoming adversity. Watch both the MV and live version. I like the Download Festival live version best so far.
    2. Migetsune - This one is cool cuz incorporates Japanese intruments and an old Japanese style melody for the intro and bridge. The MV is good so worth the watch, but live is always better with babymetal
    3. Catch Me If You Can - Super heavy verses with pop punk choruses. The girls are playing hide and seek with a demon or an ONI in Japanese. The growling you hear in the song is the Oni asking them if they are ready to start the game! Go for the live version.
    4. Road of Resistance -Speed metal that reminds you of DragonForce becuase they helped write the song. Live version is the way to go
5..Rondo of Nightmare - a super heavy and beautiful ballad featuring Su only. Definitely the live version with intro is the one to watch.

BabyMetal is definitely different. But that is what makes them so good. First you reacted to a Black Baby Metal song. Which is without the lead singer Su Metal. What is amazing about BabyMetal is they mix almost every genre of music to heavy metal music. Since you are more into the heavier side of metal I recommend doing “Death” as your next reaction. Whatever you do, do not do “Give me Chocolate” until you go a little bit deeper into the BabyMetal rabbit hole. This is an odd place to start, I've always thought of this as a bridge in their old concerts for Su to rest her voice. Even the dancing is not as energetic as most of their performances so everyone just slows down and catches their breath before ramping it up again. Considering they seem to be dripping with sweat at the close of the concerts they need a break.
