Babymetal - Full Sonisphere 2014 performance - The Western Breakout Concert (+ SuMetal interview)

- Babymetal played Sonisphere, UK in July 2014, when MoaMetal and YuiMetal were just 15 and SuMetal was 16. It was their first Metal festival outside Japan but by the time they'd finished their 5 song set, they had won over a new fanbase and were set to conquer the UK, Europe, the USA and the rest of the world. This is that performance, which I've put together from a number of fan cams and videos. The interview with Su at the start is from NHK Tokyo TV in Dec 2020 and the thumbnail for this video is a shot of Su, Moa and Yui looking out at the crowd of 60,000 they are about to perform in front of. Nervous? Who wouldn't be? Did they smash the performance? Take a look and see...
When 3 young teenage girls backed up by heavy hitter metal musicians can make hard-nosed headbangers get excited, and mosh around to songs about chocolate, a game of hide & seek, ending bullying amongst other, you know you've got something special. 😁
where did u get this GREAT QUALITY ????!!!!
🙂
These videos are all posted separately by different people on RUclips. He took them and pieced them together
@@yuzupooh4153 That is the BEST Give me chocolate video and audio I ever heard !
@@AlizeeDefan here’s an great version of give me chocolate ruclips.net/video/XlMBtxBln6U/видео.html
This never gets old. The sheer balls to go out there, to a potentially hostile crowd, with both confidence and persistence... the way Su keeps milking it during the GC break, insistent they sing the ridiculous lyrics, but yet GETTING HER WAY, and then the moment the crowd turns fully in their favor, during Catch me if you can, is just pure magic. By the time their 30 minutes is over, BABYMETAL changed the western metal scene forever, and about 50,000 metalheads joined The One. Watching the various fancams, you can hear the crowd slowly getting louder, and louder, and more frantic. Its one of the coolest damn moments in metal history, seriously. They wanted MORE, they were calling for encores. Thats power. "See you!" LOL. Three high school kids holding one of the biggest metal festivals in the world hostage for a half hour, transfixed. The look on Su's face during basically all of Megitsune tells the entire story, they had them, and they KNEW it. Usually shes pretty stone faced, but that very real smile the entire time, she was loving the moment. IDZ is a masterclass in having a crowd eating out of your hand. Pure joy coming from all three girls, no nerves anymore, no reservations, just cutting loose and drinking it in. The wide shot of the ENTIRE crowd with their arms raised during the "We are" call and response, is THE coolest thing I have ever seen. I love this so much.
As Su says in that 2021 interview, it was her favourite concert moment from her career. Yui and Moa had to go back to school a few weeks after this and I've often wondered whether they had to write one of those essays on the first day back that had the title What I Did On My Summer Holidays! That final song, IDZ, has been one of my favourite performances of theirs for many years and always makes me feel proud of them and their guts in facing 60,000 metalheads...and absolutely killing it. They sold more merch than any other band that weekend.
@@tonygriffin_ Aye. Theres another interview out there too, a text based magazine article, long form in japanese, where she gives a similar answer in 2017/2018 or so, more detailed since its a text article. She mentions how the crowd was going so hard near the end it made her step it up, and you can see it, by IDZ she is performing at 110 percent and cannot... stop... smiling. I prefer those interviews, they say so much more off camera than on. I couldnt tell you what it was called tho, as it was translated from a japanese magazine.
It's a Beck moment
I love this too. I was very reluctant to even listen to them for a long whole, but when I finally did I feel like my life changed.
We metalheads will accept any type of metal. Whether hard core to what BABYMETAL is.
I can't imagine the absolute guts and nerves of steel they must have to perform in front of all these people. These 3 14-16 year olds facing 60,000 metalheads in a foreign country but they still gave 100% and beyond, performing professionally and passionately. Babymetal truly is legendary, they had everyone by the throat with the whole performance. The whole band must've been so elated to be received so well.
Up til this day I still rewatch their IDZ performance and get teary eyed. They're awesome.
Kami band make it easier. They are world classic musitians.
@@krisztiankoblos1948 no doubt about that, they are a part of Babymetal as much as the girls. They must've been really happy to perform there and they really are amazing.
Yes, I watched some reactors (The Thamesmen) see IDZ for the first time just yesterday and it was great to see their response and, of course, to watch the performance again - it still moves me every time to see them killing it. Su's happy grin at the end is so nice to see (Moa's happy grin is always there and Yui-chan was probably thinking about whether about where she could get some tomatoes). 🦊🤘🤘🦊
That's the part that gets me when I watch this. Seeing the girls just win the crowd over and cause the Kami Band to loosen up and stop worrying about whether it's going to go over, it's amazing.
You can literally see them super uptight for the first song and change, especially BOH. But they see that the crowd is just fucking feeling it, and by the end they tear the place down.
The crowd chanting for one more song is the highest praise they could get.
This set should be required viewing at music schools like Full Sail or Berklee.
Kobametal is a genius.
@@actuallynotsteve i love watching this, you can just see them breaking the crowd and they did it quickly
You see how the appreciation is growing. The crowd is getting louder every song. They're fucking amazing!!!!!
I was there. I’d never heard of them. I have travelled to Japan to see them been all over Europe to see them. There is nothing like them. This show will always have a special place in my heart but they’ve only gotten better & better over the years. Truly unique.
Yes! Truly unique.
I was there that weekend, it was an amazing show.
The crowd were unsure at first but quickly warmed up due to their tireless energy, smashing riffs and Su-Metals heavenly vocals, one of the highlights of the weekend.
I got some of their band mech whilst there :D
I heard that they sold more merch than any othrr band there that weekend so you bought a bit of history and helped give them the support they needed back then! The Fox God will be happy! 🦊🤟🦊🤟
The entrance song was really perfect, some good ol' heavy metal can heal any minds
Praise the Kami Band to be SOOOOOO much awesome !
5:18 Look at moa´s subtle smile, like she wants to say "oh, you gonna love this.."
What gets me every time I watch this set is that the girls were so much more composed than the Kami Band. They had that look of "dude did we actually agree to do this? What if people hate it?" but by the time they get into Catch Me If You Can, they're sure the crowd fucking loves it, and it melts my heart every time.
EDIT - also, RIP Mikio, I feel like he was the only one to just know that this shit fucking ruled from the start, and I was blessed enough to see him the first time I caught Babymetal unaware. He really got this audience amped up, and was a special talent. He's Starlight in the sky now, but I'm thankful to have seen him play.
Totally agree with all you say, about the girls and Mikio, may he RIP. I love that moment when Su smiles and waves so happily at the ned of the show. And the look on her face when they walk off the stage - she knew she was the queen and her many new subjects had donated their souls to her already vast collection! 🦊🤘🤘🦊
Catch me if you can broke all shit..
Yeah that's the song where the Kami Band realized the crowd was on board for this, and they just fucking starting melting faces. I love this set, it's one of the greatest musical accomplishments I've ever seen.
They're SO timid at first, unsure of whether they're bombing, but within 2 songs they realize the crowd is eating it up, and just go on an absolute tear, and this crowd did the entire world a favor by embracing and encouraging Babymetal
The girls were like 15. I can't even imagine being in a touring band, let alone "hey, go play this really risky gimmick in front of 60000 people" at that age. Su-Metal and the gals are absolute legends.
The audience didn't know what the f they just witnessed!
Maybe they did, as Babymetal sold more merchandise that weekend than any other band at the festival.
@@tonygriffin_ To be fair even if you never heard of them, if you saw them for the first time you would 100% by their merch since they were so damn unique.
audiance is the magic.
They were supposed to do theire gig at a smaller stage but due to some changes they did it at the main scene. And they completely drowe over some 60000 metalheads!! And they were 17 and 15 years old!!!!!!!
Where tf was I that day?
I didn't discover Babymetal until 2020 its 2023 now and I'm for ever Babymetal fan for life
If you where there you where truly part of babymetal history
BABYMETAL 💕💕🤘
I'm very excited because the official babymetal website announced they have a new project for babymetal called the other one
I've never had the chance to see them perform live
If they do I won't miss it for the world
How’s 2023 looking, what’re my prospects of shit getting better?
That festival was the first time I'd ever heard of them, I was right down the front. A phenominal performance. I've seen them live 6 times since then, and will be seeing them again on December 3rd in the Netherlands.
People who never heard of them, at the end of performance of the band, kept asking "One more song !! " - That`s is the proof. The mass is never wrong.🤘 WE WANT THE BABYMETAL EMOTICON WITH THE FOX GOD FINGER POSITION !!!!
🦊🤘🤘🦊
This was a magic. If you see this it never leave you alone.
This popped up so I thought I'd watch it again, but probably give IDZ a miss. I didn't, of course, and enjoyed it just as much as the first 150 times
It's one of my favourite performances and Su's smile and wave after shouting the last "We are..." and hearing and seeing the crowd respond always makes me smile. That's why I put the interview with Su at the start, because she explains how that was the moment they knew they'd made it outside of Japan. The fancams I found weren't as good as that official clip so I used that...though that means the video can be viewed worldwide, except for in Japan due to copyright. 🦊🤘🤘🦊
If I could go back in time, I go to this day!
Thank you for your time and effort to put this together! The little interview snippet put it all into perspective and I like your editing. Well done!
Thanks for your comment. Much appreciated. It was a labour of love!
This is PURE GOLD!!!! 🥇🥇🥇👑👑👑
Thank you for sharing 🔥🔥🔥🤘🦊🤘
I made the video when I realised years ago that there was no record of this very iconic and important gig. Glad you enjoyed it! 🦊🤟🤟🦊
5:53 R.I.P.
... 😅a lot of them well known the lyrics and the symbol (the fox). the girls were not alone with the beasts... 😍😍🥰
I was there - and I would do anything to go back to that day it was pure bliss to be part of that
I bet it was - an iconic moment! 🦊🤘🤘🦊
@@tonygriffin_ Thanks for posting the video my good man - just spent an emotional 30 minutes watching it!
Wow amazing and superb. Beautiful effort and stunned me a lot.😍😍😍. Stay blessed my new friend❤❤❤
Thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated. Your site is very interesting and I've subscribed for the wonderful Indian/Pakistani recipes on there.
Wow thanks for both of y'all's channels
Thanks so much for making it possible for me to witness this legendary performance. Great job on the compilation here, really incredible.
Thank you very much. Your reaction was the sort of reaction that inspired me to make it.
@@tonygriffin_ You really did a great job. All those different videos yet mixing it to a comprehensible whole. Sweet.
Awesome video! Going to see them next week, can't wait!
i'm seeing them in 5 days for the last show of the 2023 u.s. tour. i'm immersing myself in their past live performances until then, and this was a must see. especially hearing su-metal reminisce about what it was like for them that day. they have come such a long way, and been through so much heartbreak over the loss of mikio and yui. today they have proven their longevity, and the legend continues.
I'd say "Hope you enjoy them live" but there's no hope required as you will love every second! 🦊🤟🤟🦊
@@tonygriffin_ i have no doubt that you're absolutely right.
13:52 - 14:00 I love this part 👌🏻
If I would've been there, I would have fallen in love that day, fortunately I found them 2 years later and have been a hardcore kitsune for seven years now, better late than never, long live the BABYMETAL.
Maybe the most epic metal performance ever. How they won that crowd over, in stunning fashion, is still a wonder to behold.
Im in the fox hole.. and i cant get out..
@@oxama010 It's a great place to get stuck in!
This sum real-life Madoka Magica shiet
dude im in love with the eastern kami band like they r all so cool

22:49 siempre me encanta esta parte la cara de felicidad de Mikio! 😁 sabe que lograron el milagro! Descanza en paz my little god! 👑👏❤
omfg, where has this been for 6 years my dude, come on. :
I remember seeing this during 2014 I was probably like 12 during that time but someone was live recording the concert and I was watching the live I was happy that they performed there
holy. This is a documentary.
Oh ... I saw Pikachu!
Thank you
Wtf happened there? Is here any metalhead who was there?
you can’t fail to like them, they’re all so talented
se extraña a yuimetal!!!!!!
La extrañamos pero se fue hace 6 años. Momoko encaja bien con Su y Moa
Their close protection guy standing at stage right looks stone faced the whole time, all business 😁
Always wondered who that guy was!
Save it, cos the real ip ovners doesnt have it. And it is history. the only show 1 song.
this is still here :)
Thanks bro 🙌🏻
Вы бы лучше показали интервью их ужевзрослых, а здесь им по 12 лет
Fantastic!!!
I mean yeah, I guess you could call this a breakout concert... but fans fail to mention that a significant portion of this crowd was already familiar with BM's material, and they were hyping the rest of the crowd up. BM had been viral on YT, you can literally hear people singing along to Megitsune. Japanese pop culture was catching fire in the western world long before BM emerged, and a lot of people had been paying close attention to anything and everything coming out of Japan.
The most remarkable thing is that this is one of the earliest examples of the power of viral online marketing/promotion, and it's even more impressive considering that western audiences weren't even the target demographic, at least initially.
I know it's fun to pretend like this was one of the most surprising moments in metal history, but with the gimmick they had and the band to back it up, there was no way western metal fans weren't going to love BM. Koba wouldn't have put those girls on that stage in front of that audience if he didn't already know EXACTLY how those people were going to react, make no mistake!
I called it a 'breakout' gig because it was their first Metal gig outside of Japan. Kobametal didn't put them on stage, Metallica pushed for them to appear. I had been a Metal fan since seeing Sabbath in 1976 and was here but hadn't heard of them. There were about a 1000 people near the front who knew of them but the other 60,000 hadn't. Not sure what your list of negative comments is all about but hope you get to find more positivity in life.
The girls themselves consider this a big turning point in their career in interviews.
First big metal festival outside of Japan, they had fans but unlike solo shows people are there for many different bands. So to go out in front of a massive crowd and one that's notorious for showing their feelings, I think if you can win them over you're prepared for anything.
