WOW great tip coach Mauro! I've been struggling with this serve for years and was wondering why it wasnt penetrating. This is a gem of a tip! and you're so right, the previous instructions from the dozens of videos I've seen are vague
I like this tip, so vital to get the toss right. I thought I was tossing up in front, but when I tested this out by seeing where the ball dropped, it was dropping right on the baseline, not inside. Perception and reality mismatched! This is often the case with tennis, you're not doing what you think you're doing, and vice versa too. That's where a coach or video clip of your shots is so handy.
I recently came back to tennis after 20 years, and I couldn't figure out why I was getting only spin and no power on my serve. Apparently I do suffer from this, and the video makes it crystal clear to me. Thanks coach!
That's a very good tip. Thanks! Every other you tube video on the kick had it wrong. They always said to toss over or behind your head witch as coach Mauro explained gives you no power or spin.
this is excellent advice. when i first went to see the pros play live, it's one of the first revelations i had: "....ohhhh they are tossing the ball INTO the court and making contact in a sort of forward-lean!" and when i say 'they' i mean EVERY pro i have seen. this is not easily seen on TV but is very obvious when you watch the pros play live. another thing not obvious on TV: how much margin the pros hit the ball OVER the net. even flat hitters like Stepanek clear the net by a nice margin.
Thank-you for taking the time to do this. This is the visual demonstration that I needed to understand the idea of "For the second serve, throw the ball more behind you." Okay, but where exactly is "behind you"?! Now, I can see it. It's very confusing until you see it demonstrated!
Disgruntled Elf i agree with u 100% . now i understand it too . after going through so many video lessons , this is the one which explains it the right way ,( as if otherr instructors are quite reluctant to tell tthe truth unless u pay them )
best kick serve lesson here . how hv i been so wrong to toss outside the court . explained why i felt very heavy in my swing to generate the swing, but result is a spin with no power n many times it didnt quite cross the net .
very good! normally trainers teach only the part of puting the ball more to the way of the body without including the body going through the ball teachers make the instructions of first an second serves as opposites
I have right shoulder issues...especially in the chest area where the chest muscles connect to the shoulder...I am wondering if my toss is too far back (in relation to the court) causing me to over stretch my chest and shoulder. Thanks for the tip...
I always watch coach Mauro and he seems to always find whats wrong wih me and I pay a lot of coaches and they are not as good as Mauro! Thx I practice the kick serve since three months and I don't have progress. All the coaches didn't find what went wrong and coach Mauro found it in 4 minutes. My ball toss was outside the court and not inside!!! Thx :) :) :)
inkhaven - it's actually the opposite, as you want to move toward an eastern backhand grip for kick serves, to force overpronation, which will speed up the racket head and give your more spin. Just watch almost tour pro and you will see them using a grip biased toward the eastern backhand side on their second serve :-)
Hi, I watch and hear your videos very carefully. Now I can hit kick serve though very low percentage. But whenever goes in, it is either Ace, unplayable or I get very weak return. Though I generate lot of top spin but my main problem is, most of the time it is going long. How can I fix this issue? Please share your expertise. Thanks.
Put more shoulder rotation to exaggerate spin. It will increase the topspin so the ball will be sharper and likely, more powerful. This will expand your margin of error.
wow, you continue to prove why you're the best coach on the net. Thanks Coach Mauro!
Listen to Coach Mauro! He knows what he's talking bout. Thanks for the tip coach!
Very good tip. As mentioned by other comments, you show and explain very clearly the correct kick serve.

Thanks! The toss position for learning a kick serve was something I was really wanting to work on so this video was very helpful.
This is a really good tip. i never thought about the toss being infront. Thanks so much!!

Great video! I had no idea how to get the toss behind my head, yet inside the court before this.

Thank you very much, very helpful. May God bless.
OHHH toss inside the court as well...that looks much better than what i was doing
when you do the kick/topspin serve are you still using the continental grip or do you change your grip to your forehand topspin?
